BOSLEY, CHARLES W.

BOSLEY, CHARLES W. "CHUCK," age 66 of DeTour Village, Michigan passed away early this morning, January 28th at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan.

Bernadine Quick

Longtime Newberry resident, Bernadine F. Quick, 83, died Saturday evening March 22, 2003 at the Luce County Annex in Newberry.

Born September 10, 1919 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, daughter of the late Hector and Cecilia (Ranger) McGilvary, Bernadine had been a resident of Newberry since the mid-1940's. On February 10, 1947, she married Manley E. Quick in Newberry and was a loving and devoted homemaker, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Bernadine was a longtime member of the Newberry Pentecostal Tabernacle Church and her hobbies included cooking, gardening, fishing, and was also an avid Detroit Tigers baseball fan.

Besides her parents, Bernadine is preceded in death by her husband Manley on October 14, 2002; also siblings Althea, Necia, Theresa, Daniel, and Eldora. Survivors include her children Thomas (Shelly) of Clare, Mark (Cathy) of Newberry, Sandra (Victor) Freed of Engadine, Cecile (Robert) Whiekin of McMillan, Ila (Donald) Hyvarinen of Durand, and Ellen (Larry) Selke of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 22 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; sisters Laurinda Miller of Pontiac and Sharon (George) Fox of Newberry.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Newberry Pentecostal Tabernacle Church with Pastor Ronald Oberle officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home cemetery. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Monday, March 24, 2003 from 4-7 p.m. and also at the church on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 from noon until the time of services.

Those who wish may contribute to the Newberry Pentecostal Tabernacle Church in memory of Bernadine F. Quick.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Vera Mae McKie

Vera Mae (Lockhart) McKie, 72, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Sunset Manor in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Vera was born March 27, 1930 in Kinross, Michigan to Clifford and Lena (Kibble) Lockhart and was a lifelong resident of Chippewa County. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed listening to country music, dancing, and camping.

Vera is survived by two brothers, Walter Lockhart and Harold (May) Lockhart, both of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; one sister, Margaret McKerchie of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband James C. McKie on April 20, 2001.

Funeral services will be held on March 25, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Reamer Funeral Home, Pickford, Michigan with Reverend Bill Lockhart officiating. Friends may call at the Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and noon until the time of service on Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be left to the Community Baptist Church of Sault Ste. Marie or to the Hospice of Michigan.

Arrangements are being handled by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan.

Janet Franklin

Janet Mary "Girlie" Franklin of Cedar St. in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. passed away on Friday, March 21, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital.

She was born on February 5, 1935 on Sugar Island, Mich. and was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Cherished mother of six children: Ronald Franklin of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Randy Franklin of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Rick Franklin of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Raymond Franklin of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Ross Franklin of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and Jan Aube of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; one sister, Ida LaFrenier of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; one brother, Louis "Bud" LaFrenier of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons: Robert "Skimpers" Franklin and Rodney Allen Franklin; and her parents, Luke and Ida May (Gurnoe) LaFrenier.

Visitation began at 3 p.m. on Saturday, and continues until the time of the funeral service with a Pipe Ceremony on Sunday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Neeganageezhic Ceremonial Building.

Funeral and Traditional Services will be held on Monday, March 24, with a traditional service prior to the funeral service. Funeral services begin at 10 a.m. at the Neeganageezhic Ceremonial Building with Father John Hascall officiating.

Her final resting place will be Wilwalk cemetery on Sugar Island in the Spring.

Margaret Rhoades

Margaret M. Rhoades, 93 of Hessel, died Saturday evening, March 22, 2003 at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care where she had been a patient for 3 weeks. She was born May 3, 1909 in Hessel. Her parents were Patrick and Marie (St. Louis) Mertaugh. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in St. Ignace and was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church and St. Anns Altar Society. Her first husband, Lyle William McLeod, died in 1972. She married Charles "Pat" Rhoades in January, 1974, and he survives her. They lived in the St. Ignace area since 1974, and she returned to Hessel after her husband entered the long term care unit because of ill health.

Also surviving are her family, 3 sons, Lyle Francis McLeod of Hessel; Thomas McLeod of Cedarville; Mike and Marilyn McLeod of Hessel; daughters Adrienne and William J. Smith of Pickford; MaryAnn Carr of Cedarville; Jane Marie Hobbs of California; Angela and Jack Porco of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; a brother, Adrian and Margie Mertaugh of Kalamazoo; a sister, Mary McKee of Sault Ste. Marie; step-son Fr. C. Michael Rhoades of St. Ignace; step-daughter Mary Margaret Rhoades of Madison, Wisconsin; 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, and 6 step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, and a son, William Patrick McLeod.

Friends may call at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace on Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. with parish prayers at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church with Fr. C. Michael Rhoades officiating.

Burial will be in Cedar cemetery in May. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Memorials may be directed to St. Ignatius Church in honor of Margaret Rhoades. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

ADAM, MYRTLE BEACOM

ADAM, MYRTLE BEACOM, age 82, of Pickford, Michigan passed away on March 21, 2003 in Avon Park, Florida. She was born January 14, 1921 in Pickford, Michigan. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan.

Shirley Gardner

Shirley M. Gardner of Saultuer Drive in Sault Ste. Marie passed away on Friday, July 25, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 15, 1927 in Bruce Mines, Ontario.

Shirley was a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the Blue Star Mothers and an avid bingo player. She worked at Sunset Manor for five years.

She is survived by a son, Ben (Carol) Lewis of Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters, Bonnie (Milton) Eubanks of Sault Ste. Marie and Mary (Jerry) Hancock of Lansing; a sister, Audrey (David) Postelwait of Bradley, Arkansas; three brothers: Robert Fischer of Bradley, Arkansas, Ronald (Helen) Fischer of Sault Ste. Marie and Rodney (Jeanette) Fischer of Traverse City. She is also survived by 10 grand children and 16 great-grandchildren.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband, James Gardner; her parents, Andrew and Henrietta Fischer; and three sisters: Ona Barrett, Wilda Morrison and Betty Clark.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home, followed by services at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Father Ted Brodeur officiating.

Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Donald Ladd

Donald J. Ladd passed away at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie on July 25, 2003. He was born in Brimley on September 11, 1932.

Donald graduated from Brimley High School in 1951. He worked for Sanderson Trucking in the 1950s and later he was a commercial fisherman.

Surviving Donald Ladd are his brother, Forrest Ladd and his nephew, David (Marsha) Ladd, all of Brimley. Preceding Donald in death are his parents, Leroy and Jessie Ladd.

Visitation for Mr. Ladd will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Hovie Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Roy Case officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest cemetery. Memorials may be left to the American Diabetes Association.

ZWOLINSKI, JEANETTE V.

ZWOLINSKI, JEANETTE V., age 76 of Raber passed away unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, July 27, 2003. She was born on October 2, 1926. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford.

James Schneider Sr.

James J. Schneider Sr. of 310 Dillon St. in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away at War Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care Unit on Wednesday, September 10, 2003. Jim was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Donna M. Schneider on May 22, 2003. Jim is lovingly remembered by his five children, James J. Schneider Jr. of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Gretchen E. Beck of Sparks, Nevada; Martha A. Schneider of Sparks, Nevada; David G. Schneider of Flower Mound, Texas; and Mary Kathryn Richardson of Richmond, Michigan. Also surviving are five grandsons, three granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter.

Jim was born on July 8, 1921 in Saginaw, Michigan to George and Grace Schneider, attended Central Michigan University and served his country during the Second World War as a member of the Army Air Corps. Mr. Schneider was employed for 34 years with Michigan Bell Telephone Company, retiring as Commercial Manager in Sault Ste. Marie in 1979.

Jim gave freely of his time and was active in many civic organizations in the Sault including The Michigan Bell Pioneers, Kiwanis International, The Chamber of Commerce, and The Salvation Army. Jim was also a Life Member of the Elks Club.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on September 29, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Father Donald Shiroda officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Eva Southall

Eva Jean Southall, of E. 24th Ave., Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 29, 1928 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She enjoyed her grandchildren, family and friends, the most to whom she shared her heart.

She is survived by a son, William P. (Josefina) Southall of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; a daughter, Patti Pacheco of Germany; three brothers, Patrick H. Griffin of Illinois; Paul (Marlene) Griffin Sr. of Cedarville, Michigan; Richard Griffin of Lansing, Michigan; two sisters, Anna (Bill) St. Onge of Cedarville and Pauline (Ronald) Nordquist of Cedarville, Michigan; sister-in-law Maxine Griffin of Alpena, Michigan; three grandchildren, Roseanna Pacheco, Bobby Southall, and Andrew Burnett, all of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; two very dear friends, Jim and Gloria Callon of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and one great-nephew also survive.

She is predeceased by her brother, Robert Wayne Griffin and parents, Patrick H. and Mildred B. (Moore) Griffin.

A memorial mass will be held on Monday, September 29, 2003 at noon at St. Mary's ProCathedral Church. Clergy is Father Ted Brodeur.

Final resting place will be Cedar cemetery in Cedarville, Michigan in the springtime.

Blanche Deuman

Blanche E. Deuman of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on September 23, 2003. She was born on Neebish Island, a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Blanche also worked at War Memorial Hospital for 26 years.

Blanche is survived by two brothers; John (Teressa) Lawrence of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Thomas (Karen) Lawrence of Wisconsin, and two sisters; Georgina (Robert) Miller of Barbeau, Michigan, and Pauline (Joseph) Sauro of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Andrew Lawrence and Ethel May (Cruickshank), as well as two sisters, Thelma Valk and Ruth Lawrence and a brother, James Lawrence.

Visitation for Blanche Deuman will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Friday, September 26, 2003 from noon to 2:00 p.m. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., also at Hovie Funeral Home on Friday, September 26, 2003 with Don Myers officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be left to the First Presbyterian Church Re-building Fund.

KALBELEISCH, SELDEN H.

KALBELEISCH, SELDEN H., 91 of St. Ignace, died Wednesday morning, September 24, 2003 at his home. Arrangements are being handled by Dodson Funeral Home, St. Ignace.

FREELAND, GEORGIA L.

FREELAND, GEORGIA L., of Sugar Island, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at her home. Arrangements will be announced at a later date by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

Benjamin Carrick

Benjamin D. Carrick of Bay Mills Pointe Road in Brimley, Michigan, died on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at his home. He was born on April 26, 1927 in Cedarville, Michigan.

Benjamin was a WWII Army veteran and belonged to the VFW Post #9023 in Brimley, Michigan. He worked at the Brimley State Park under the Green Thumb Program, and was a former member of the Christopher Columbus Society. He enjoyed sports, especially hunting and fishing and was an avid Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions fan. He will also be remembered for his favorite saying, "Whoopie Wow."

He is survived by his lovely bride of 54 years, Marie Vivian Carrick; eleven children (and their children), Ben (Katie), Emily and Benjamin; Gwen (Terry) Deuman, Shelly, Sheila, and Nicholas; Mike (Kathi), Brenda, Michelle, Carol, Michael, and Scott; William (Debra), Chris, Dustin, and Kelsi; David, Wendy, Melissa, and Holly; Laurie (Reg) Robbins, Darrell, Kurt, and Cody; Mary (Charles), Laura, Tracy, and Nathanial; Eileen (Norm) Cameron, Chad, Brad, and Ashtyn; Christopher (Carol) Christopher Jr., Travis, Lynette, and Aaron; and Suzanne, James, Jonathan, and Brandon; special brother-in-law, Arlo Hamel; special sister-in-law, Agnes Carrick; special neighbors, Steve and Deb Zabelka and family; 30 great-grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews also survive.

Benjamin is predeceased by his parents, Elsie and William Carrick; his step-father, Leo LeBlanc; brother, Bill Carrick; two sisters, June Parish and Fern Hamel; a grandson, Terry Deuman Jr.; a granddaughter, Vivian Renee Jones; and a great-grandson, Jesse Bjork.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, at the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church. Prayers will be at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29, at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church with Celebrant Father Peter Fosu. Final resting place will be at Mission Hill cemetery.

Memorial contributions would be appreciated, and may be made to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church of Hospice of Chippewa County.

John Clark

John B. Clark, 81, of Newberry, died on Sunday morning on October 26, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette. John was born in Elmira, Michigan on September 13, 1922.

John was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946 and continued through the civil service program from 1947 to 1949 as a power plant maintenance foreman on the Isle of Guam. A veteran of the timber industry, he founded the John B. Clark Sales and Service Company in 1963 following a successful logging career which started in 1950. In 1981, John was the recipient of the Timber Producers Association of Michigan and Wisconsin Merit Award in recognition of his outstanding service to the timber industry in the Lakes States region and for special achievement in furthering the conservation of the northern states forests and industries. Following a prosperous career, John retired in 1997.

John was a member of the VFW Post #8372 in Engadine, the Newberry Elks Lodge #1705 and the Newberry Country Club. John also served as a Board Trustee of the North County Bank and Trust and its holding company, First Manistique Corporation from 1980 to 1997.

John is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Wolf, son Richard and siblings Art, Ray, and Nora Ellen. Survivors include his loving wife, the former Katherine Mooney of Newberry, whom he married August 25, 1962 in Newberry; his children Barbara (Don) Grawey of Saline, Carol Ford of Manistique; Robert (Sally) and Mike (Lillian), all of Newberry and David (Penny) of Sault Ste. Marie; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; his brothers Robert (Gloria), Paul (Joyce), Joe (Emma), Harry (Pat), Ernie (Carol), Roy (Cleveann); his sisters Anna (Rudy), Laura (Bob), Emily, Martha (Gill), Illah (Bill), and Ruth (Jerry).

An Elks memorial service will be conducted by the members of the Newberry Elks Lodge on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow with Pastor LaVonne Stephenson officiating. A closing memorial service will be conducted by the members of the VFW Post #8372 of Engadine. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Thursday, October 30, 2003 from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Those who wish may contribute to the Tahquamenon Education Foundation in memory of John B. Clark to fund a natural resources scholarship or to the Tahquamenon Logging Museum in his memory.
