CARTER, BRIAN Sr., Memorial service for Brian Carter Sr. will be held on Monday, February 25th at the Athenium Suite Hotel in Greektown, 1000 Brush, Detroit at 6 p.m. in the Aphrodite Room. Brian Carter Sr., formerly of Detroit, Michigan, retired in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Died February 6, 2002 at the age of 66. Born in Washington D.C. in 1935, he was a son of the late Ernest and Mildred Carter. He retired with the rank of Sergeant from the Detroit Police Department serving at the 12th Precinct, 1st Precinct (Legal Advisor's Unit), and 3rd Precinct. He was a Korean War veteran and served in the U.S. Army, 187th regimental combat team. Mr. Carter received a Master's Degree with Suma Cum Laude honors from the University of Detroit and attended Wayne State Law School. He was the adored father of Brian (Yaritza) Carter Jr., Erika (Calvin) Freeman, Penelope Zeidan, Justin Carter, Desmond Carter, and Jeremy Carter. Dearest grandfather of Olivia R. Carter, Brian M. Carter, Belinda Carter, Calvin B. Freeman Jr., and Erik M. Freeman and great-grandfather of Cedric and Christopher Carter. DEFORD, CHARLOTTE ANTOINETTE Age 84, of Brighton. Died February 23, 2002. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, September 4, 1917 to Marie and Christian Hanneman. She was married to Victor Thomas Deford on July 1, 1939 in Detroit. She was preceded in death by her husband and by her brother, Christian A. Hanneman, II. She is survived by two sons, Terrence M. Deford (Glynis LaDonna) of Westerville, Ohio and Kurt M. Deford (Cheryl) of Brighton, Michigan; grandchildren, Amy Zastrow (Wes), Michael, Brandon and Nicole; one brother, Ralph Hanneman of Florida; one niece and nephew. GREIDER, ROBERT C., Age 76, Long time resident of the City of Grosse Pointe, Robert C. Greider, died of respiratory failure at St. John Riverview Hospital in Detroit on February 2, 2002, as a result of complications of a stroke he suffered last year. He was born in Detroit on 17 August 1925 to Luther W. Greider and Marion Lorena Lanbdin and grew up on Mark Twain St. He graduated from Cooley High School before joining the Army in 1943. After further training as a Combat Engineer in England, he experienced German V-1 attacks in London before landing in France through Omaha Beach shortly after D-Day. He worked in Supply throughout the European Theater including working in Rotterdam and then Antwerp where he again experienced V-1 and V-2 attacks. He then went through the Rhineland Campaign as a Combat Engineer. After the end of the war he served in the occupation of Germany in Wiesbaden where coincidentally both of his daughters, Linda and Sue, were stationed in the 1980's with the U.S. Army. His son Robert worked as a federal civilian employee for the Air Force in Wiesbaden for ten years. His grandchildren Joseph and Rachel (Sue) and David (Linda) were all born at the Air Force hospital in Wiesbaden. Before returning home to the states he attended Biarritz American University in France before being honorably discharged in 1946. Using his benefits under the GI Bill he attended Grinnel Collage in Iowa graduating in 1950 with a degree in English and Business with a minor in Art, and having made many lifelong friends. After returning to Detroit he attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art, left Detroit to explore the Country and took courses at the Art Center School in Los Angeles. After again returning to Detroit he took courses at Wayne State University in writing and photography, and at the Sales Analysis Institute Before starting work in the Automotive Industry. His first job was working for his father at L.W. Greider Interior Decorations during the Depression and later during the early 1950's. After starting in the Auto Industry he worked for the Jam Handy Organization in the 1950's, for Mopar and Chrysler through the 1960's, and for Wilding Inc. which became Maritz Inc. through the 1970's and 1980's. He enjoyed his work as Writer and Editor writing dealers facts books, driving all makes of cars for vehicle comparisons, and even doing his own artwork and freelance projects putting all of his experience and education to good use. After retiring in the 1990's he kept himself busy with a variety of activities including spending more time on his painting which he started in France after the war. He enjoyed mall walking, biking and brunching daily with his friends. He was active for many years as the 1950 Class Representative for Grinnell College. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 24 years and was active in helping to organize AA meetings in the Grosse Pointe area. He is survived by his brother Luther and his sister Virginia, his daughters Susan and Linda, his son Robert, and his grandchildren Rachel, Joseph and David. His wife of 39 years Joan Kraszewski passed away in 1998.
