Jack Allen

Jack Edward Allen, infant son of Senator Jason E. and Suzanne K. (Miller) Allen, was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus and his great-grandparents in Heaven on Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

Along with his parents, he is also survived by his sister, Meredith, at home; paternal grandparents, Maurie and Betsy Allen of Traverse City; maternal grandparents, Dale and Claire Miller of Farmington Hills; paternal great-grandmothers; Dorothy Engelman of Acme and Marguerite Allen of Strongsville, OH; maternal great-grandfather, Harry Bishop of Northville; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Baby Jack was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandfathers, Merle Engelman and Neil Allen; maternal great-grandmothers, Blanche Bishop and Leota Miller; and maternal great-grandfather, Harold Miller.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass Street, Traverse City, MI 49684. The Reverends John Ellinger and Tamara Williams will officiate.

Interment will be in the church columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jack's name may be made to the Jason and Suzanne Allen Regional Giving Fund, 250 E. Front Street, Ste. 310, Traverse City, MI 49684 or online at www.gtrcf.org.

Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

PELTIER, FRANCES JOYCE (SPLAN)

PELTIER, FRANCES JOYCE (SPLAN), of Petoskey, originally of Marquette, died on October 24, 2003 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. She was 78 years old. Arrangements by Stone Funeral Home of Petoskey.

Donna Ewing

Donna H. Ewing passed away at War Memorial Hospital on November 23, 2002. She was born on November 1, 1928 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Donna was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Ruth Circle and Business and Professional Women. Mrs. Ewing retired from her work as clerk from Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in 1986.

Surviving Mrs. Donna Ewing are her daughter, Jeannie Smith of Sault Ste. Marie, and her sisters Mary Cowell of Taylor, Michigan and Lois Farnsworth of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Donna Ewing will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Monday, November 25, 2002 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Eastern Star funeral rites at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at Hovie Funeral Home with Reverend John Hamilton officiating. Internment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be left to the Central United Methodist Church.

George Freeborn

George L. Freeborn passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on November 23, 2002. He was born in Donaldson, Michigan on April 2, 1913.

Mr. Freeborn worked in construction taking part in the building of the Mackinac Bridge, the Poe Lock, and the Norris Center complex. George loved to trap, he was an avid hunter, and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Freeborn is survived by his wife Bertha; two sons, George (Delores) Freeborn of Brimley, and Keith (Polly) Freeborn of Brampton, Michigan; and one daughter, Darlene (William) Thompson of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. George is preceded in death by his son Edward, daughter Shirley, his brothers Herb, Glen, Carl, Rundle and Lyle, and his sisters Lucille Beamish, Emma Gress, Mary Nelson and Margaret Freeborn.

Mr. Freeborn's grandchildren are Billy, Lisa, Teena, Bethann, Junior and Ryan, and great-grandchildren Danny, Angel and Bree.

Private family services will be held graveside at Hillcrest cemetery. Hovie Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Vicki Pertle

Vickie Lee (Johnston) Pertle passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2003 in Harvard, Illinois after a lengthy battle with Lupus.

Vicki was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on August 13, 1946 and lived her life between the Sault and Chicago areas.

Vicki leaves behind her husband, Roger; two daughters, Paula (Jayme) Knapp of Cheboygan, Michigan and Leah (Mike) Ward of Harvard, Illinois; and four grandchildren. Also surviving is Vicki's mother, Florence E. Johnston; sister, Paula A. Massolin; a brother, Michael A. (Louri) Johnston; and five nieces, all of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Her father Paul M. Johnston predeceased Vicky in February 1999.

Memorial services were held in Harvard, Illinois with burial taking place at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in the Sault.

Duwaine Bennett

H. Duwaine Bennett, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., passed away on January 17, 2003 at Williamson County Medical Center in Franklin, Tenn. He was born on July 17, 1935 in Sault Ste. Marie.

After graduating from Sault High in 1955, he joined the United States Air Force. He retired from McDonald Ford in Northville, Mich. in 1997.

Duwaine is survived by daughters Jacki (Michael) Rosen and Susan Bennett; sons, Richard and Scott; grandchildren, Jessica, Marcus and Lauran; mother, Alma Lesniak; sisters, Maxine (Robert) McCrory, Lois Bennett (August Brown); brother, Randy (Sharon) Bennett; and uncle, Ed (Barbara) Wilson.

Duwaine was preceded in death by his father, Clayton T. Bennett.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, January 24th at Friendship United Methodist Church in Franklin, Tenn. with a full military burial at Middle Tennessee State Veterans cemetery at 2 p.m.

Edward Dorie

Edward Herry "Hank" Dorie, 80, of Sault Ste. Marie, loving father of eight and husband of Inez G. (Klein) Dorie, passed away suddenly on January 20, 2003. He was born on April 5, 1922 in Marquette to Fred and Philomena (King) Dorie.

Hank's life was full of accomplishments, including his World War II overseas stint in the Coast Guard, a forestry degree from Northern Michigan University, and a long career as a Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Officer for 32 years that included several locations in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

He thoroughly enjoyed his involvement with Boy Scout Troop #402 in Manistique, with one of his sons graduating as an Eagle Scout. He retired as the Assistant Director of Marine and Water Safety for the state in 1979.

Hank's retirement years allowed him to pursue his love and talent of renovating and refurbishing everything when he and Inez spent two years at Point Iroquois Lighthouse. Further evidence of his handiwork was the complete remodeling of the 100-year-old Dorie home in the Sault.

He often got involved in the matters of everyday living. Hank was a strong member of St. Mary's School Board, a charter member of the Trout Lake Lions Club and a past president of the Senior Citizens' Club, and a member of Brimley VFW Post #9023.

Hank passed as he loved to live, with a project in the making and tools in his hands.

He is survived by his wife, Inez, of Sault Ste. Marie; his sons and daughters-in-law, David (Elsie) of Niles, Wilfred "Fritz" (Deborah) of Eldorado, Texas, Charles (Kathleen) of Seattle, Wash., Raymond of Sturgeon Bay, Wisc., Thomas of San Angelo, Texas, and Daniel of Sault Ste. Marie; daughters and son-in-law Sandy (John) Bradlinski of Rome, N.Y. and Cynthia Dorie of Newberry. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Wallace, of Kenton, Mich.; and sisters, Marie Ryoti of Marquette and Pauline Bogus of Kalamazoo.

Hank was predeceased by his brothers, Randolph, Edmond, Francis and Wilfred; and two sisters, Irene Gustafson and Joyce Cottonham.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie on Monday, January 27th at 11 a.m. with Father Ted Brodeur celebrating. A military memorial service will held in the summer.

The family suggests that memorials may be given in Hank's name to the St. Mary's Cathedral Roof Replacement Fund.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Judith Lyons

Judith A. Lyons of Barbeau Street in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan. She was born on November 26, 1935 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Mrs. Lyons retired from War Memorial Hospital in 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Marion "Paul" Lyons of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, whom she married on June 24, 1953; two sisters, Dorothy Soeder of Niagara Falls, New York and Jean Hause of Redding, California; three brothers, Robert Gollinger of Petoskey, Michigan; George Gollinger of Marietta, Ohio; Harold Gollinger of Chicago, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lyons is predeceased by two sisters, Lucille Ojala and Bernice Ranson; one brother, John "Jack" Gollinger; and parents, Frank and Georgianna (Robare) Gollinger.

Visitation will be Monday, January 27, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

Services will be Monday, January 27, 2003 at 5:00 p.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Clergy is Father John Hascall.

INFANT, CONNOR JAMES GORSUCH

INFANT, CONNOR JAMES GORSUCH, son of Gary and Angela Gorsuch, was born January 21, 2003, and passed away January 22, 2003 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Arrangements being handled by Hovie Funeral Home.

NELSON, MARION G. CARR

NELSON, MARION G. CARR, age 89, of M-134 Cedarville, Michigan passed away at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22 at the Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace, Michigan. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan.

VERT, ALEX "BUD,"

VERT, ALEX "BUD," passed away in Scandia, Michigan on January 22, 2003. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on December 19, 1926. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Robert D. "Bob" Ward III

There will be a Memorial Service for Robert D. "Bob" Ward III of Pickford, Mich. whom passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2003. Elks Service will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 24. The Memorial Service will follwo at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

Maude Kessler

Maude L. Kessler of New Hudson, age 94, passed away on April 3, 2003. She was born in Oxford, Michigan on September 11, 1908 to William and Mary Belle (Stoddard) Gladden.

In 1937, she moved to New Hudson and was a member of the New Hudson United Methodist Church, charter member of the New Hudson T.O.P.S. #81 programs.

Maude was the loving mother of Ann McCraner of Benzonia, Doris (Stanley) Clark of Commerce Township, and Peggy (Philip) Gage of Sault Ste. Marie. Seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews also survive her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Kessler in 1977, two brothers and one sister, and son-in-law Don McCraner.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 6, from 7-9 p.m. and Monday from 1-9 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, 122 West Lake Street, South Lyon, MI 48178. A private family graveside service will be held on Tuesday prior to the Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at New Hudson United Methodist Church.

Memorials in Maude's memory may be made to the New Hudson First United Methodist Church Camp Fund for Children, 56730 Grand River Ave., New Hudson, MI.

Arrangements were made by Phillips Funeral Home.

Harold Nye

Harold F. Nye, age 78, of Nye Road, Hessel, Michigan passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, April 5th at Cadillac Mercy Hospital in Cadillac, Michigan.

Harold was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 9, 1924 and lived most of his life in Hessel, Michigan. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Sergeant with the Communication Division in the Pacific Theater. He retired as a union carpenter having been a union member for over 50 years.

He was a member of Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters Union Local 202, served as a trustee on the Les Cheneaux School Board for several years and was an EMT on the Clark Township Ambulance Corps for 11 years. Harold loved his family and always looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting and loved nature and being outdoors.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma (MacDonald), whom he married on January 20, 1951 in Garden City, Michigan; three sons, George (Shari) Nye of Phoenix, Arizona, Roy (Bette) Nye of Hessel, Michigan and Tim (Carol) Nye of Pickford, Michigan; two daughters, Brenda (Gene) Hamel of Cadillac, Michigan and Julie Nye of Easley, South Carolina; nine grandchildren: Cedric, Justin, Michelle, Galadrial, Harmony, Chris, Corey, Brian and Amanda; four great-grandchildren: Bryanna, Denny, Lynnann and Lilith; two sisters, Dorothy (Barney) Thibert of Neebish Island, Michigan and Margaret Patrick of Clovis, California; and three brothers: Wilbur (Jan) Nye of Hessel, Michigan, Lou (Flo) Nye of Tustin, Michigan and Bob Nye of Lompoc, California.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Sr. and Florence Nye and one brother, Fred Nye Jr.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 10th at 4 p.m. at the Reamer Funeral Home with Mr. Randolph Dunn officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until time of services. Interment will be in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

LaPONSIE, WILLIAM

LaPONSIE, WILLIAM, passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on April 5, 2003. He was born in Brimley, Michigan on November 1, 1902. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

DOYLE, HELEN V.

DOYLE, HELEN V., passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on April 6, 2003. She was born in Brimley, Michigan on June 21, 1913. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Carl Ficker

Carl M. Ficker, 78, of Hulbert died early Saturday morning May 31, 2003 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 6, 1925 in Chalen, Washington, son of the late Herman and Matilda (Ludeman) Ficker, Carl served in the United States Navy during World War II until his honorable discharge on February 2, 1946. Carl was briefly employed as a commercial fisherman in Alaska and on July 5, 1952 married the former Jean Kabelman in Hulbert. Carl was a resident of Seattle, Washington for several years and was employed as a construction worker for the dairy association for 35 years until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement, Carl moved to Hulbert and was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, ATV riding and woodworking. Carl was a member of the International Laborers Union of North America Local #242 in Seattle, Wash.

Besides his parents, Carl is preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Survivors include his loving wife of over 50 years, Jean of Hulbert, several siblings and in-laws; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor Larry Gegner officiating. Interment will follow at the Hulbert Township cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. Monday.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.
