June Brady

June Elizabeth (Bliss) Brady, 83, of Ludington and formerly of Sault Ste. Marie passed away Friday May 30, 2003 at Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington.

June E. Bliss was born June 17, 1919 in Sault Ste. Marie, the daughter of Henry and Florence Bliss. She grew up in the Sault and graduated from Sault High School with the class of 1938 moving to Ludington in 1997.

She was married June 20, 1939 to Russell N. Brady and he preceded her in death on September 23, 1977.

June and her husband volunteered many hours with the Elks Club in the Sault and she continued with this work after his death. She also loved the time she spent decorating for various organizations and class reunions.

June is survived by her two daughters, Susan (Ron) Smith of Ludington and Ann ( Jack) Haydon of Esco, Minnesota; three sons, Russell (Berneta) Brady of the Sault, John of Esco, Minnesota and George of Detroit; two sisters, Dorothy Guererro of the Sault and Mildred French of Vermont. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, four brothers, three sisters and a son, Michael in 1978.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday with Father Ted Brodeur officiating at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home and burial will follow at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens cemetery.

Helen Long

Helen (McBride) Long died on Friday, May 30, 2003 at Riverside Methodist Hospital.

Helen was born on October 1, 1926 in Sault Ste. Marie. She was married to Lawrence Long on May 7, 1946 and had four children. Lawrence, Helen and family lived in Sault Ste. Marie Until August, 1963 after the Carbide factory closed. Helen retired from Nationwide Insurance in 1981. She did a lot of volunteer work at St. James the Less Church.

She was preceded in death by her father Thomas McBride; her mother, Viola Trombley McBride; brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Grace McBride; and brother-in-law Robert Beatty.

She is survived by her loving husband Lawrence Long of 57 years; sons James, Rick and Ronald all of Columbus and Steven (Debbie) of Delaware, Ohio; a daughter, Linda (John) Long, Stanton, Whitehall, Ohio; grandchildren, Jeffery (Doreen) Long, Kendra (Cullen) Starkey, Steffany (Mark) Redfern, Brittany Long; great-grandchildren Tyler, Tea and Taylor; brothers, James (Shirley) McBride and Delaney McBride; and sisters, Rita (Robert) Morrison, Marie Beatty and Lyndell (Frank) Sweeney.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. James the Less Catholic Church in Columbus, Ohio with Father Pat Patterson officiating.

Entombment will be in Northlawn Memory Gardens in Westerville, Ohio.

Family and friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Schoedinger North Chapel in Columbus, Ohio.

Friends if they wish may contribute to the American Heart Associations in her memory.

IZZARD, BERNICE L.

IZZARD, BERNICE L., 75, a lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie died Saturday May 31, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital. She was born November 23, 1927. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Deborah Bohrn

Deborah Elaine Bohrn, 49, of Williamsburg, died unexpectedly at Munson Medical Center on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003.

Formerly of Dafter and Sault Ste. Marie, she had been a resident of the Traverse City area for the past 10 years. Deborah was a 1972 graduate of Rudyard High School and a former member of Dafter Presbyterian Church. For 10 years, she was the co-owner and operator of Front Row Center Video in Sault Ste. Marie, and most recently was the caregiver of her close friend and employer, Barbara Lossman. Deborah enjoyed cooking, weaving, gardening and especially loved rescuing homeless dogs.

Born Dec. 13, 1953, on Edwards Air Force Base in California, she was the daughter of William E. and Mary U. (Valora) Bohrn, who survive.

Also surviving are three sisters, Cynthia (John) Brogan of Jackson, Miss., Kimberly (Rick) Barnes of Pelahatchie, Miss., Tammie (Mark) Brown of Hinesville, GA.; one brother, Bradford W. Bohrn of Dafter; five nieces; four nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Monday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society.

Geraldine Hogan

Mrs. Geraldine M. Hogan, 84, of Gaylord passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2003 at her home.

Mrs. Hogan was born in Escanaba on February 27, 1919, the daughter of Klas and Bertha (Blanchette) Wicklund. She attended Gregg Business College in Chicago.

On November 29, 1941, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., she married Oliver H. Hogan. In 1958, the couple moved to Gaylord from Wyandotte and purchased the Bozek Jewelry Store. Five years later, the business -- renamed Hogan's Jewelers -- relocated to its current location on Main St.

Mrs. Hogan was co-owner and a very integral part of the jewelry store.

She was a member of the Zonta Club, the Gaylord Book Club, and the Otsego County Democratic party. She loved traveling, reading and crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Hogan was preceded in death by her husband Oliver in 1994, and her son Michael in 1997.

She is survived by her children: Nancy (William) Schmiedicke of Comstock Park, Mich., Betsy (Gene) Sanders of Gaylord, Carol (James Magnuson) Hogan of Warren; grandchildren: Dana (Joel) Levanduski, Marc & Erin Schmiedicke, Tyler, Abby, & Colin Sanders, Cynthia (David) Graves, Sandra Hogan; great-grandchildren Collin & Peyton Graves; brother, Raymond (Barbara Young) Wicklund of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; and sister-in-law, Margaret Riske of Trenton.

Visitation will be at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday and on Monday from 10 a.m. until prayers at 10:30 a.m. A wake service will be held Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 11, at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary cemetery in Gaylord.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County Commission on Aging, Hospice of Michigan, or the charity of your choice, through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Janus Storey

Janus R. Storey of Rapids Drive, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. passed away on Friday, August 8, 2003 at her home. She was born on March 13, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

She served on the Board for the Historical Society and the Hiawatha Library Co-operative, and was also a member of the Genealogy Society. She earned her Master's Degree at Western Michigan University.

She is survived by her mother, Frieda R. Storey of Pickford, Mich.; one sister, Kathy (John) Hughes of Noblesville, Ind.; three brothers: Robert (Sandy) Storey of Pickford, Mich., Franklin (Karen) Storey of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and Steven (Leanne) Storey of Pickford, Mich.; 10 nieces and nephews: Brian (Krista) Hughes, Brad Hughes, Joe and Tom Storey, Dan and Holly Storey, Nikki and Will Storey, and David and Leslie Slater; a great-niece, Mackenzie LaPorta; and a great-nephew, Christopher Vagts.

Janus was predeceased by her father, William Otto Storey.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 12, at 11 a.m. at the Pickford United Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Gruenberg officiating. Final resting place will be Fairview cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Janus' memory to the Bayliss Public Library.

Michael Cooper

Michael J. Cooper passed away at his home in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. on August 6, 2003. He was born on November 21, 1951.

Mike worked for the Sault Area Public Schools for more than 20 years. He loved to golf, read, fix things, and he was also an avid photographer. He especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Surviving Mr. Cooper are his wife of 31 years, Jan Cooper and her parents, Robert E. and Audrey V. Burtt; his sons, Morgan T. Cooper and Shane R. (Leigh) Cooper of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; his brother, Thomas J. Cooper of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; three sisters: Pat Lawless of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Kim Cooper of Rudyard, Mich., and Kelly Dalton of Spring Hope, North Carolina. He is also survived by his special Aunt Nola Cooper of Kinross, Mich. Mike has four grandchildren: Hallee, Jodi, Robert and Brandon. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding Michael Cooper in death are his parents, Raymond J. Cooper and Shirley (Pembroke) Cooper, and three grandsons: Arthur, Michael, and Christopher.

Visitation for the Cooper family will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Monday, August 11 from 6-8 p.m. Private family graveside services will be held at Pine Grove cemetery on Wednesday, August 13, at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be left to the Scott Brazil Memorial Fund at the Sault Area Public Schools.

Dolores Mayer

Dolores D. Mayer, 75, a lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie went home to our Lord on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 following an illness of several months.

Dolores was born in Sault Ste. Marie on June 13, 1928 to George and Rose Thorne. She was the eldest of five children. She attended Sault High School and was an elder and lifetime member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

On October 8, 1946, she wed Orel J. Mayer of Rudyard. They made their home in Sault Ste. Marie where they raised their five children and where Mr. Mayer owned and operated Mayer Plumbing and Heating. Mr. Mayer preceded his wife in death in 1996, just weeks before they would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Floyd Thorne; one sister, Clara Kovacs; and two grandchildren, Ryan Mayer and Corel Komarnizki.

Mrs. Mayer is survived by two sons, Raymond (Lee) Mayer and Cory (Denise) Mayer, both of Sault Ste. Marie; and three daughters: Diane (Mike) Ancil of Lafayette, Indiana, Sandra (Walter) Komarnizki of Sault Ste. Marie, and Lorel (Ron) Neal of Naperville, Illinois. She is also survived by one brother, Clyde "Jewell" Thorne of Titusville, Florida; one sister, Althea Nitzel of Orlando, Florida; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call on Friday, December 19, 2003 from 3-5 p.m. or 7-9 p.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie. A Prayer Service will be conducted at 8 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church on Saturday, December 20 at 10 a.m. with Brother John Hascall officiating. Internment will be in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Helmi Hilton

Helmi E. Hilton of West 24th in Sault Ste. Marie passed away on Monday, December 15, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 9, 1920 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Helmi was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and War Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She married her husband, Herb, on March 18, 1943 in Sault Ste. Marie. Helmi enjoyed reading and making crafts for family and friends. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to walk and swim.

Helmi is survived by her husband, Herbert L. Hilton of Sault Ste. Marie; three sons: Galen (Kathy) Hilton of Shelby Township, Terry (Kay) Hilton of Pinckney and Dale (Jodi) Hilton of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Sharon (Evan) Plemmons of Pullman, Washington and Valerie Jordan of Grand Rapids; two sisters, Aili Manchester of Sault Ste. Marie and Ellen Thibault of Spring Lake; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by four brothers: Reino, Neil, George and William Mannesto; one sister, Fanny Back; and her parents, George and Lempi (Maki) Mannesto.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 19 at 11 a.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie with Pastor Paul Raappana officiating. Final resting place will be in Pine Grove cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.

IRENE IZZARD

Irene Izzard, 95, a resident of Cedarville, Michigan for many years passed away at 3:55 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, February 3, 2002 at the Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace.

Irene was born in DeTour Village, Michigan on April 14, 1906 to Albert and Martha Hughes. She married Russell C. Izzard in 1931 in Sault Ste. Marie and spent many years on their farm near Pickford and worked for many suppers as a seamstress for the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

She was a member of the Pickford Presbyterian Church, the Sunshine Homemakers and the Cedarville Mothers Club.

Irene is survived by two daughters, Velma Roberts of Traverse City, Michigan and Colia (Keith) Sims of Georgetown, Texas; one son, Terry (Judeen) Izzard of Woodenville, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Gerry Izzard of Cedarville and Nancy Izzard of Milford; four sisters, Gertrude Chambers of Menominee, Marie Harrison and Theora (Gerald) Harrison both of Pickford, and Jean Carnes of Lakeview, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell in February of 1981; two sons, Darrell in November of 1996 and James in October of 2000; son-in-law, Philip Roberts in November of 1993; and sisters, Cora Mae Hughes, Marion Harrison, Minerva Wise and Thelma Hewer.

Funeral services will be held in the spring at the Pickford Presbyterian Church in Pickford with times to be announced followed by burial in Cedar cemetery in Cedarville.

Memorials may be left to the Pickford Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are being handled by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford.

HECTOR McKAY

Hector McKay, 82, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away at War Memorial Hospital on February 3, 2002.

Mr. McKay was born in Sault Ste. Marie on January 27, 1920. He worked at the 753rd Radar Squadron in Sault Ste. Marie until 1980. He also sailed the Great Lakes and worked at the Tannery. He had draft horses all his life and was a very talented harness maker.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice (Bammert/Sager) McKay; a son, Dennis (Mary) McKay of Saginaw; a step-son, Steven (Patricia) Sager of Syracuse, Kan.; a step-daughter, Susan (Randy) Ramage of Moorpark, Calif.; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, George (Shirley) McKay of Sault Ste. Marie and Robert (Eleanor) McKay of Parkersburg, W.Va.; his close friends, Mike and Karen Whitney of Sault Ste. Marie; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Leila (Green) McKay; and a brother, Stewart McKay.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. and then from 7 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5 at Hovie Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6 at the funeral home with Pastor Mike Kenney officiating. Burial will be at Eagle Harbor cemetery in the spring.

Memorials may be left to the Shriners of St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

OLIVE PEROW

Olive A. Perow passed away January 29, 2002 at 11 p.m. at the Presbyterian Home, Inc. Nursing Home in Lakeland, Fla., just four days short of her 100th birthday. She was born in Michigamme, Mich. to Leon and Melvina Greenleaf on February 3, 1902.

She was loved for her gentle manner and optimism. Olive was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, St. Mary's ProCathedral Church and was a devout Catholic.

Olive is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Harry (Eileen) Johnston; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Darlene Perow; five grandchildren, Mrs. Eric (Coleen) Beckel, Mrs. Brian (Pamela) Burchart, Mark Perow, Darin (Laurie) Perow and Mrs. Jeff (Teresa) Seidel; four step-grandchildren, Mrs. Russell (Nancy) Miller, Michael Johnston, Mrs. William (Cindy) McKee and Mrs. Jeff (Janis) Saari. Also 14 great-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter, Cassidy Conner survive her.

Husband, Albert Perow; son, Daniel Perow; grandson, Robert W. Conner III; and her parents, precede Olive in death.

Services and burial will be in the spring and will be announced at that time.

Arrangements are being handled by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.
