RADKA, ELMER L., Age 81 of 355 West Woodward Avenue in Rogers City, passed away Friday (May 17, 2002) at his home. The son of Elmer G. and Anna (Trapp) Radka, he was born on October 13, 1920 in Rogers City and was a graduate of Rogers City High School in 1938. He then attended the University of Michigan where he received a bachelors degree in 1941, and continued on with post graduate courses in the business field. In 1942 he entered the U.S. Navy and trained at specialized naval schools at Columbia and Harvard Universities. He was commissioned as an Operations Officer for LCIs (Landing Craft Infantry) and gunboats and then served in both Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during World War II. He participated in many island invasions, including Pelilu, Anguar, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Ieshima. He was discharged in 1946 as Lt. Commander SG. He then entered the University of Michigan Law School where he received his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1949 and was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan on June 29, 1950. On June 18, 1949 he married Margaret Krueger at St. John Lutheran Church and they made their home in Rogers City. He helped manage his father s Hudson-Rambler-American Motors Dealership while setting up his law practice. He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 31, 1996, his mother on Feb. 19, 1990, his father on May 31, 1968 and a brother Burton in 1972. In 1952 he was elected Prosecuting Attorney for Presque Isle County and served in that office for 24 years until Dec. 31, 1976. He served on the Board of Directors for the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan for many years, and its President in 1968-69. In 1971, he was appointed Friend of the Court by Judge Philip J. Glennie and served in that position until 1987. He was also a member of the Grand Jury for Emmet County, and licensed real estate broker. In 1961, he was selected as the delegate from his district for Constitutional Convention to rewrite Michigan s Constitution and spent 7 1/2 months in Lansing. A member of the Rogers City Lions Club, he served as its president in 1956, and was elected Governor of District 11-E in 1959-60. During those years he traveled 50, 000 miles, visiting all of the numerous Lions Clubs in the large district. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 3209 (now Post 607) and the Rogers City Servicemens Club, where he portrayed Santa Claus at their annual Kid s Christmas Party for 35 years. He also served on the Presque Isle County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Commission for many years. He was a member of the Presidents Club of the University of Michigan and an avid fan of its football team and currently serving as an alumni recruiter for the U of M Admissions Office. In accordance with Mr. Radka s wishes, no services will be held and the Bill Brietzke Funeral Home has laid him to rest with his family in Memorial Park cemetery in Rogers City. Expressions of sympathy can be made to a charity of friend s choice, including Hospice of the Sunrise Shore from which he received care in his final days or Westminster Presbyterian Church of Rogers City where he was a member.

RUGGIROLI, JOSEPHINE MARY Age 86. Beloved wife of the late Louis (1966). Loving mother of Robert (Sharon) Ruggiroli. Loving sister of the late Nettie Valente and sister-in-law of Tony. Dearest aunt of Debra Caron and great-aunt of Melissa and Deana and great-great aunt of Jenna. Lifetime member of Lombardi Ladies Society and the San Francesco Altar Society. SUTAR, CATHERINE, Died early Saturday morning, May 18, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac. She was born in Litmanova, Czechoslovakia, January 10, 1905. Until her death at age 97, she was the oldest living person in that town. She came to live in America at age 15, and a few years later married John Sutar, who preceded her in death. She studied to become a dressmaker and they moved to Detroit to raise three children, Alex and William Sutar and Olga Meyer. Catherine worked in a factory during WWII and alongside her builder and electrican husband. Together they moved a house from the Lodge expressway demolition area to Hazel Park where they re-bricked and rebuilt themselves a home. Here, she had a wonderful rose garden while her husband, John, kept garden and fruit trees. They led hardworking and exemplary lives and were great examples for their children as each of them worked their way through college. Her two sons became engineers and her daughter, a teacher. Catherine is survived by her three children, a grandson, Jonathon and a granddaughter, Kathy. Following tradition, Jonathon is an environmental engineer (Master s in Engineering from Michigan State); he lives and works in Chicago. Kathleen, (BBA from University of Michigan) is presently working for Accenture in the Ukraine.
