Stanley Harrison

Stanley A. Harrison of Pickford, Michigan, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2002 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility in Caro, Michigan. He was 87 years old.

Born in Pickford on April 30, 1915 to Charles "Alec" and Carrie (Wise) Harrison, Stanley was a lifelong resident of his community, graduating from Pickford High School in 1935. During his early working years, he was employed at Fisher Body in Pontiac before returning to Pickford and the family dairy farm. He was also a carpenter and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 0202. Stanley helped build several notable projects, including the Soo Locks and the "Big Mac" Mackinac Bridge Project.

Mr. Harrison was an active member of the Pickford community. He was an elder in the Pickford Presbyterian Church, and held membership in the Pickford Lions Club, Pickford Grange and later, the Pickford Area Senior Citizens. He served as Marquette Township Supervisor for several years, and played guitar and harmonica with local groups. Stanley enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid outdoorsman.

Stanley Harrison married Marion Evelyn Hughes on December 26, 1936 in Pickford. She predeceased him on August 9, 1997. They are survived by two daughters; Willa Jean (Dean) Rye of Harbor Springs, and Judith Ann (Ted) Jarvie of Middleville; one son, Alex (Penny) Harrison of Unionville; six grandchildren, Kari (Steve) Tippet; Lisa (Terry) Ernst; Jennifer (Scott) Clancy; Lee (Amy) Jarvie; Marion (Brian) Beachy; and Bonnie Harrison; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, Elizabeth Hill of Sault Ste. Marie; and two sisters-in-law, Edna Harrison of Pickford, and Merle (Harrison) Wilson of Pickford.

Other family members who predeceased Stanley include two sisters, Rita (Russel) Cottle and Isabell (John) Rye; three brothers, Kenneth, Edwin, and (infant) Roy Charles Harrison; and one (infant) grandson, Samuel Alexander Harrison.

The Harrison family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m., on Monday, December 2, 2002 at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford. Funeral services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 3, 2002, also at Reamer Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Clawson will officiate and burial will be in Cottle cemetery, Marquette Township. Memorials may be donated to Pickford Historical Society or the Pickford Presbyterian Church.

Shirley Dempsey

Shirley M. Dempsey passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on November 26, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie, born on January 1, 1916.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Robert A. Dempsey, and son James C. Dempsey.

Mrs. Dempsey worked for many years at War Memorial Hospital as a nurses' aide in the emergency room. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Shirley Dempsey is survived by her son Charles Dempsey of Slidell, Louisiana; and grandsons, Rev. Bryan S. Dauphin of Shreveport, Louisiana; Rev. Ron D. Dauphin of Eleyria, Ohio; Mr. Gary E. Dauphin of Luling, Louisiana; Mr. John R. Dempsey of Findlay, Ohio; and granddaughter, Ms. Tammy Jo Dempsey of Slidell, Louisiana. Shirley is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren; and nephews, Mr. Pat Dempsey and Mr. Mike Dempsey of Port Huron, Michigan.

Shirley was affectionately known as Grandma "D" to the Leroy and Nancy Bumstead, John and Darla Campbell, and Larry and Myrna Campbell families, who graciously shared their love with her.

Visitation for Mrs. Dempsey will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Saturday, November 30, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with funeral services commencing at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Sidney Reed and assisted by Rev. Bryan Dauphin and the Rev. Ron Dauphin will be officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be left to the Calvary Baptist Church.

Louis Marra

Louis Marra, 78, of Houghton Lake, died of cancer on Memorial Day, May 26, 2003 in Port Charlotte, Florida. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie to Leonard and Nunciata Marra.

Louis served in WWII in active combat with the American Division in the Philippines and received several service bars and the bronze star. He also served in the Korean War as a sergeant and bridge foreman.

He worked for many years for the state liquor control commission in Sault Ste. Marie and Birmingham and moved to Lake City where he owned a variety of stores and served on the fire department. After retirement, he moved to Houghton Lake and employed by Hunt's Drug Store.

Louis was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Elks and Christopher Columbus Italian-American Society.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Mary (Cook) Marra; daughter, Mary Lou (Alex) Cazers; and grandchildren Paul and Mara. He is also survived by brothers Pat of Houghton Lake, John of Jacksonville, Florida, George of Sault Ste. Marie, Mike of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; cousin Americo Metro of Sault Ste. Marie; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Houghton Lake at a later date.

George Young

George A. Young passed away at War Memorial Hospital on June 3, 2003. He was born in Bruce Township on October 6, 1924.

George was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He was a loving husband and father. He was loving husband and father. He was involved with the construction of the Poe Lock as well as many road construction projects through Michigan with I.L. Whitehead Company.

He enjoyed camping in Florida for nine winters and also in many other areas of the country. George loved the outdoors, woodworking and always had a big garden, and was very involved with hockey.

As a father, George attended as many activities as he could in which his children and grandchildren were involved. He will also be greatly missed by the members of the Antique Equipment Association. George Young also served his country during the Korean Conflict.

George Young is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 15 years. His children are Darrel (Jill) Young of Wichita, Kansas, Lowell Young of Sault Ste. Marie, Ron (Phyllis) Barkley of Warren, Dennis Barkley of Sault Ste. Marie, John (Gina) Barkley of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, Sharon (Floyd) Freamon of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Wanda (Steve) MacLeod of Spring Lake, Deborah Young of Wichita, Kansas, and Bonnie (Bud) Weber of Sault Ste. Marie. Also surviving are his brother, Raymond (Donna) Young of Sault Ste. Marie. He has 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Mr. Young in death are his first wife, Isabel, his parents Ira J. Young and Myrtle O. Sanderson, his brothers Arvet and Orvet Young, and his sisters, May Atkins and Marie Preslan.

Visitation will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Thursday, June 5, 2003 from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Friday morning, June 6, 2003 at 10 a.m. with Reverend Sid Reed officiating. Pallbearers will be George's grandson and nephews. Interment will take place at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Memorials may be left to Long Term Care at War Memorial Hospital or the Take Five Community Action Program.

SWANSON, GLORIA M.

SWANSON, GLORIA M., passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on June 4, 2003. She was a resident of Sault Ste. Marie, born February 4, 1935. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

JOHNSON, H. CLIFFORD

JOHNSON, H. CLIFFORD, 78, of St. Ignace died early Wednesday morning at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care. Arrangements are incomplete and handled by Dodson Funeral Home, St. Ignace.

John Bishop

John C. Bishop, age 76, of M-48 in Pickford passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, October 10, 2003. He was born July 20, 1927 in St. Johns to Ephner Dale and Adeline (Thompson) Bishop.

John was a farmer his entire life. Before moving to Pickford in 1977, he lived in the St. John's area where in addition to farming, he worked as a bridge welder for Clinton County and as a journeyman plumber.

John was a former member of Michigan Trail Riders. He loved horses and farming. He truly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving John are one son, David J. (Jane) Bishop of Pickford and one daughter, Carol (Tom) Komperda of St. Louis; seven grandchildren: John "J.D." Bishop, Amanda (Luke) Munger, Ashley Bishop, Jesse Bishop, Judy Bishop, Jonathon Komperda and Jessica Komperda.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine "Gerry," on March 20, 1991.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 12 and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, October 13 at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 13 at 2 p.m. at Reamer Funeral Home with Reverend LeRoy Sutfin officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Pickford Township.

Gerald Keenan

Gerald Joseph Keenan of Brimley passed away quietly at his home on Saturday, October 11, 2003 after a long battle with illness. He was born September 27, 1936 in Saginaw.

Jerry's family was very important to him as were his career endeavors. He served in the United States Army as a young man, returning to begin a very personally satisfying work experience with the Chippewa County Department of Social Services, now known as Family Independence Agency. He retired from F.I.A. in 1993 after 31 years of services as a social worker for the department.

He was well known for his efforts to develop the volunteer services program for Chippewa County. In the 1980s, Jerry received two consecutive statewide annual awards for providing leadership to the "Best Volunteer Program in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan."

Jerry worked alongside his volunteers, personally delivering Christmas baskets and toys for children through impassable winter roads to those in need throughout the county area. He helped found the programs for Veterans Services, Toys for Tots, Domestic Violence Prevention, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Parade of Dolls, and Christmas Trees with mittens and hats located in financial institutions and correctional facilities volunteer programming. Last, but not least, he founded the statewide program known as the "Indian Outreach Program" housed in selected counties throughout the state.

In retirement, he was an avid hunter, gardener and an excellent cook. Jerry's most famous personal project was the building of his beloved log cabin on the Tahquamenon River, floating the log, log by log, downstream to construct the cabin. Once finished he loved going there to his God's country. May he rest peacefully.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 14 from noon until 2 p.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Mission Hill cemetery. Memorials to the Big Brothers-Big Sisters would be appreciated.

RUDD, JACOLYN E.

RUDD, JACOLYN E., of West 28th Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie passed away at her home on Saturday, October 11, 2003. She was born on June 21, 1936. Arrangements will be announced at a later date by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

BUCK, WILLIAM "BILL"

BUCK, WILLIAM "BILL," 74, of Kincheloe passed away at his home on Saturday morning, October 11, 2003. Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Robert Van Alstine

Robert N. Van Alstine, age 55, of Sault Ste. Marie passed away unexpectedly November 17, 2003 at his home. He was born October 14, 1948 in Sault Ste. Marie to Henry W. and Loretta (Bernard) Van Alstine.

Robert grew up in DeTour graduating from DeTour Area Schools in May 1966. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1969-1970. In 1974, he graduated cum laude from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education-Political Science and History. He continued his education taking several graduate courses over the years. Robert worked as Acting Education Programs Administrator for the Bureau of Indian Affairs-Minneapolis Area, as education programs officer and career development officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs-Michigan Agency, as a teacher, a counselor and as Coordinator-Title IV-A Indian Education Programs at Sault Ste. Marie Area Public Schools, and as Adjunct Instructor at Lake Superior State University and Bay Mills Community College.

Robert was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, a long time member of the National Indian Education Association, the Sault Alternative High School Advisory Board, the Planning Committee for the Michigan Education Association Critical Issues in Indian Education Annual Conference, Elks Lodge #552, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3676, ex-officio member of the Bay Mills College Board of Regents, member of Lake Superior State University Critical Planning Committee for Native American Programs, served as External Evaluator-Sault School USDOE Title V-C Project, as well as serving on and/or chairing many other committees and boards. Robert was listed in Who's Who Among American College and University Students and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society for History Students. He was the recipient of Northern Michigan University's 1st Distinguished Native American Alumni Award and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe's Distinguished Tribal Member/Educator-Resolution of Appreciation. Robert was an accomplished singer and enjoyed Community Theatre where he helped produce plays.

Robert is survived by five brothers, Norman (Carol) Van Alstine of Holt, Michigan, Harold Van Alstine of Sault Ste. Marie, Gerald (Denise) Van Alstine of Lansing, Gary Van Alstine of DeTour Village and Timothy (Lynn) Van Alstine of Drummond Island; one sister, Shirley Van Alstine of Green Bay, Wisconsin; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Norman, Michelle, Kimberly, Robert, Nicholas, Nichole, Jason, Gary, Joshua and Nathaniel; and 10 great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 20 from 3-5 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. at Reamer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129, Pickford.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 21 at 11 a.m. at Reamer Funeral Home with Father John Hascall officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in DeTour Township.

Memorials may be made to the Native American Scholarship Fund to be established at DeTour Schools.

Carl Coleman

Carl Coleman, of Kinross, Michigan, died on Friday, September 20, 2002 at his home. He was born on May 9, 1923 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by his sister, Essie McKinnon of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and his cousin, Eva Hassett of Kinross, Michigan.

Mr. Coleman was predeceased by his parents, William and Lillian (Stonehouse) Coleman.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Services will follow immediately at the funeral home, and will be officiated by Pastor Ray Wolfe. Final resting place will be at the Lakeside cemetery in Kinross, Michigan. Arrangements will be by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

MCNEELY, MELISSA

MCNEELY, MELISSA, age 17, of St. Ignace, died at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor on Saturday, September 21, 2002. Arrangements are incomplete at this time, and will be handled by Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace.

Glenn Carr

Glenn Daniels Carr, 72, passed away May 31, 2003, a native of Rudyard where he was born on May 31, 1931 to Earl and Hazel Carr. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Korean Service Medal.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters, also two brothers, Clifford of Rudyard and Earl of DeTour. He was a member of the VFW, First Methodist Church of Inverness, Florida.

Interment will be in the National cemetery of Michigan.

FOUNTAIN, GRACE M.

FOUNTAIN, GRACE M., age 94 of Pickford passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2003 at 8 p.m. at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care in St. Ignace. She was born on November 30, 1908 in Pickford. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford.

Philip Cole

Mr. Philip Cole of Comstock passed away on July 23, 2003. He was born on August 27, 1927.

He graduated 1946 from Soo High in Sault Ste. Marie. Philip joined the United States Army in September 1946, serving in Italy as a military policeman. He was also in the National Guard and served in Korea in 1950. He loved hunting, fishing and flying. He was a pilot, owned his own airplane and prospected in Canada for uranium and gold. He sailed on the Great Lakes for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for three seasons as an oiler/fireman. In 1954, he moved to Kalamazoo and worked at Hercules Powder Company for 38 1/2 years until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Dena Cole, of Comstock; two step-sons, Chuck (Ann) Midgett and Jim Midgett; and three step-grandchildren: Brad, Alex and Emily Midgett.

Funeral services for Mr. Cole will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Avenue, with Rev. James Dyke officiating. Private interment will be in Oak Ridge cemetery in Marshall. Friends may visit with Mr. Cole's family from 6-8 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Online memorialization is available at .

Pearl Brown

Pearl E. Brown passed away at War Memorial Hospital on July 22, 2003. She was born in Sault Ste. Marie on April 1, 1916. Pearl worked for the Sault Area Schools as well as the Pittsburgh Steamship Company. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.

Surviving Pearl are her sons, Robert (Sarah) Brown of Clarkston, Gary (Ann) Brown of Sault Ste. Marie and Bruce Brown of Gaylord. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Derek (Dorie) Brown of Tempe, Arizona, Zachary Brown of Charlevoix, Julie (Greg) Camp of St. Peters, Missouri, Lance (Angela) Brown of Sault Ste. Marie, Eric (Michelle) Brown of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Rebecca (Kevin) Mills of Sault Ste. Marie and Nicholas Brown, also of Sault Ste. Marie. She is survived by her brothers Roy and Paul Wandler and her sisters Bettie Baskomb, Shirley Brawley and Nancy Nielson.

Pearl was predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 1977; two brothers, Adolph and Charles Wandler; and two sisters, Alice Fraser and Ragnhild Barker.

Visitation will be held at Hovie Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday, July 24, 2003 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend David Henderson officiating. Interment will take place at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be left to the First United Presbyterian Rebuilding Fund or War Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Unit.
