Aili Ireena Kemp

There will be a Memorial Service for Aili Ireena Kemp, who passed away on February 10th in Richmond, Virginia. Service will be held at noon on Sunday, July 27th at the North Rudyard cemetery with Rev. Gene Harrison officiating.

Laura Godin

Laura Alice Godin of Sault Ste. Marie, died at War Memorial Hospital on October 7, 2003. She was born on July 8, 1922 in Dafter and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Before retiring, she worked 20 years at Lake Superior State University. In her younger years, she loved to bowl and play cards. In the most recent few years, she spent a few days a week with her extended family at Take 5.

Laura is survived by four daughters: Chris Godin, Kay (Jim) Makela, Edith Godin, and Lori (Joe) Krzykwa all of Sault Ste. Marie; two sons, Pat (Thelma) Godin of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin and John (Maria) Godin of Berkley, California. Laura is also survived by one step-son, Levi (Lucy) Godin of Pickford; five grandchildren: Isaac and Paul Godin, Laura and Teresa Makela, and Levi Godin; two step-grandchildren, Charles (April) Godin and Suzette (George) Klukowski; two great-grandchildren, Maija and Micah; and six step-great-grandchildren, DeLynn, Ruby, Kristine, Ky, Harley, and Carmella. She had one step-great-great-grandchild, Alyssa. She is also survived by one brother, William Hill of Brimley, and one sister, Alvera Horn of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Levi Godin, in 1977; two sisters, Lillian and Mary, and a brother, Alec.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Chippewa County Community Action Agency Take 5 program.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 10, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. LaVon Stephenson officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Arrangements are being handled by Hovie Funeral Home.

Ida Kinsella

Ida Belle Kinsella passed away in her home in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on October 7, 2003. She was born in Newberry, Michigan on June 26, 1925. Ida attended the Free Methodist Church, was a member of Queen of the North, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Brimley VFW Auxiliary.

Surviving Mrs. Kinsella are her son Robert E. Kinsella of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and daughter Jane K. Noe of Gwinn, Michigan, and her sisters June Martinchek of Newberry, Michigan, and Leona Williams of Escanaba, Michigan. Ida's grandchildren are Sarah (Chad) Green of Marquette, Michigan, Robert Noe of Houghton, Michigan, Benjamin Noe of Gwinn, Michigan, and Aaron Kinsella of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Preceding Mrs. Kinsella in death are her husband Francis (1980), her parents Samuel and Laurena Huntley, and her three brothers Augustus, Robert, and Clifford Huntley.

Graveside services are planned for Friday, October 10, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest cemetery located in Raco, Michigan, with Revered Dan Waite and Pastor Terri Branstrom officiating. Memorials may be left in lieu of flowers to Hospice of Chippewa County, or the First Free Methodist Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Arrangements are being handled by Hovie Funeral Home.

Lloyd "Bill" Arnott

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 10 at Riverside cemetery for Lloyd "Bill" Arnott who passed away at his home on September 27, 2003. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on December 25, 1926. Arrangements are being handled by Hovie Funeral Home.

Dorothy Wilson

Dorothy Mae (Curtis) Wilson, age 66, of Brimley, Michigan, went to be with her Savior on Saturday, September 28, 2002 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan after a courageous battle with liver disease. Dorothy was born on November 13, 1935 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the daughter of the late Wilbur and Ethel (Pearce) Curtis. She was the loving wife of Clayton A. Wilson for the past 47 years (October 1, 1955).

She enjoyed being a homemaker and was a loving mother and grandma. She was a member of the Dafter Presbyterian Church and the Dafter Presbyterian Ladies' Aid. She served as the Dafter Township Clerk for 18 years before retiring in 2000.

Survivors include her husband, Clayton A. Wilson; three sons, Steve (Gayle) Wilson of Brimley, Michigan; Ken (Vicki) Wilson of Duluth, Georgia; and Tim (Tricia) Wilson of Brimley, Michigan; and seven grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle, Sydney, Cortney, Dana, Tyffanie, and Taylor. She is also survived by two sisters, Margie (Andy) Lampiris and Coralie (Keith) Jacobson; a brother, Harold (Linda) Curtis; and 27 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Lorne Curtis.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Hovie Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2002 at the funeral home with Reverend Rod Case officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

SUNDSTROM, REBECCA P.

SUNDSTROM, REBECCA P., age 80 of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Newberry, Michigan, died on September 16, 2002 in Norman, Oklahoma. A memorial service was held on September 19, 2002 at her church, St. John's Lutheran Church, in Moore, Oklahoma.

Edith Teets

Edith Gilda Teets, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on December 3, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 26, 1919 in Sault Ste. Marie. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, and the Christopher Columbus Hall.

Mrs. Teets is survived by a son, David and (Ann Mitchell) Teets of Fairbanks, Alaska; two daughters, Dorothy Cook of Sault Ste. Marie, and Debra (Terry) Menard of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; two sisters, Clara Lessard of Watertown, Wisconsin; and Lillian Schaere of Florida; grandchildren Bob Cook, Heather (Cook) Weber, Shawn Menard, Ann Menard, and John Teets; and a niece, Mary Gentile.

She was predeceased by her husband, John W. Teets in 1973, and parents, Joseph and Angela Tavern.

Visitation will be on Saturday, December 7, 2002 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2003.

Final resting place will be in the Riverside cemetery.

Doris Sundstrom

Doris B. Sundstrom, of Sault Ste. Marie, died at War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care on December 3, 2002. She was born on April 17, 1915, and was predeceased by her husband, E.J. (Shine) Sundstrom, Marine Editor of the Sault Evening News, and Marine Historian.

She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, and was active in the War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; the Gazelles Auxiliary of the Soo, Elks Lodge, and board member of the Sault Historic Sites Committee, and was active in the Early Birds Swim group for many years. Among her many jobs throughout her life, besides rearing her children, were with Cowan's Department Store, Arbuckle Drug, U.S. Census, Soo Travel Agency, Old Murphy Old Insurance, and Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

Doris and Shine were married September 4, 1942. After both (semi)retired in the late 1970's, they traveled around Lake Superior, to Florida, Alaska, and all around Michigan. "To Doris, there were no strangers," said her daughter. "Wherever she was, she made friends. Her big smile remains in many hearts."

Survivors include three children, (Mary) Ingrid Sundstrom Lundegaard (and husband, Bob) of Minneapolis; Jeff (and wife, Christy) of Cambridge, Minnesota; and Marc (and wife, Cheryl), of Sault Ste. Marie; six grandchildren, Kessie Jennisson (and her husband, L.J.) of Breckenridge, Minnesota; Josh Sundstrom (and his wife, Fumika) of Anchorage, Alaska; Jenny Wilkinson (and her husband, Troy) of Cambridge, Minnesota; and Jonathan, Casey, and Cody Sundstrom of Sault Ste. Marie. She also leaves behind a wide circle of beloved friends.

Besides her husband, she was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Willow Sundstrom; her parents, Alex and Mary Babington; her brothers, John and George Babington; and sisters, Elisabeth Carpenter and Mary Eleanor Babington.

Service will be with a lunch following. Visitation will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Saturday, December 7, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held at Hovie Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2002. Memorials may be left to the First Presbyterian Church.

JOHNSON, EVELYN J.

JOHNSON, EVELYN J. (SHERLUND), of Cedarville/Pickford passed away Wednesday evening at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie with her children at her bedside. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan.

Kenneth Robbins

Kenneth Robbins, 74, passed away on September 28, 2003 at the East Houston Regional Medical Center in Houston, Texas.

Ken, born on March 19, 1929, is predeceased by his parents, Andrew and LaReta Robbins of Sault Ste. Marie. On April 11, 1951, he married Marilyn Lawrence. Ken was a veteran on WWII, a life member of VFW Post 9023, and also a member of Elks Lodge No. 552. For 20 years he served with the Soo Township Volunteer Fire Department and was also involved with starting Cub Scouts and Boy Scout Troop 111 in Soo Township. He dedicated 18 years of his career to the Soo Sheltered Workshop.

Ken is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, David, of Dayton, Texas; along with daughter-in-law, Melanie Robbins. Also remaining are his brother, Bill Robbins and his wife, Sandy, of Indianapolis, IN; sister, Eileen Grougan of Dearborn Heights; sister, Margaret Simpkins and her husband, Fred, of DeTour; sister, Loraynne Leahy and her husband, Jack, of Sault Ste. Marie; and sister, Roselyn Evans, and her husband, Bob, of Dollar Settlement. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service is planned for Sunday, October 19 at 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider The American Cancer Society.

Elviria Kellis

Elviria M. Kellis, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on Saturday, September 28, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. She was born on December 21, 1930 in Cimarron, New Mexico. She was a member of the Nativity Catholic Church, and had a day care in her home for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Paul) Sullivan of Fort Erie, Ontario; five brothers, Robert Fernandez of Cimarron, New Mexico; Albert Fernandez of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Julian Fernandez of California; Fred Fernandez of California; John Fernandez of California; three sisters, Delores Burdick of Mazeppa, Minnesota; Fabiola Gonzales of Cimarron, New Mexico; Rita Baca of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and two grandchildren, Brian and Kevin.

Mrs. Kellis is predeceased by her husband, Stephen Kellis, Jr. on May 6, 1999, and her parents, Albert and Charlotta Chavez.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home, officiated by Deacon Bill Piche. Final resting place will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Memorial contributions to the charity of one's choice would be appreciated.

WILSON, DOROTHY MAE

WILSON, DOROTHY MAE, age 66, of Brimley, Michigan, passed away on Saturday evening, September 28, 2002 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan. Arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Donald Crandell

Donald A. Crandell, 56 of Brevort Lake, died late Monday evening, December 2 at his home. He was born April 23, 1946 in Petoskey. His parents were Elmer and Kathryn (McVannel) Crandell. He graduated from Charlevoix High School, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to January 6, 1968, one year and six days in Viet Nam. He was a Rifle Sharpshooter, and was a LCpl, receiving a Purple Heart and Vietnam Commendation Medal. He loved to snowmobile, fish, and hunt, and enjoyed his children and 6 granddaughters. He worked for Harbor Springs Excavating for many years, and now owns and operates Beecks Foster Care Home on Brevort Lake the past three years with his wife.

On May 25, 1968 he married Diana Beeck in Boyne City, and she survives. Also three children and families, Donald and Kathleen Crandell, Charlevoix; David and Doreen Crandell, Charlevoix; Julie and Robert Worden, Brevort Lake; brothers, Dan and Staranne, and Robert and Pauline Crandell, all of Charlevoix; Gordon Crandell, Boyne City; a sister, Genevieve and Grant Furgeson, Charlevoix; and granddaughters, Kelly, Lisa, Melissa, Taylor, Erika, and Kaitlynne.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lester and Elmer Jr.

Friends may call at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace on Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Friday, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Tari Stage-Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Gros Cap cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

SUNDSTROM, DORIS L.

SUNDSTROM, DORIS L., resident of the Sault, born April 17, 1915, passed away at War Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care on December 3, 2002. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Frances A. La Londe

Frances A. La Londe, 98, formerly of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Door County Memorial Hospital SNF, Sturgeon Bay.

She was born March 30, 1904 at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Andrew and Mabel (Bowden) Agar.

Frances graduated from high school in 1922. After earning her teaching certificate from Northern State Teachers College at Marquette, MI, she taught on Neebish Island and Sugar Island, MI.

She married Clifford V. La Londe at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie, MI on September 3, 1924. Her husband's work with the Department of the Interior took them to Homer, MN and later to Sturgeon Bay, WI in 1950. He preceded her in death April 15, 1968.

She was a member of St. Joseph's and Corpus Christi Catholic Churches in Sturgeon Bay.

Family and friends benefited from her gentle caring nature and enjoyed her quick wit and sense of humor. Her love of sewing for others, cooking, entertaining and listening to baseball games will be fondly remembered.

Survivors include four daughters, Anita (Robert) Meyer, Santa Cruz, CA; Frances Ranson, Sturgeon Bay; Virginia Hutchins, Burbank, CA; Margery Merrill, Janesville, WI; six grandchildren, Carol Gleason, Santa Cruz, CA; Damon Meyer, Scotts Valley, CA; Emily Meyer, San Diego, CA; Mark Ranson, Seattle, WA; John Ranson, Milwaukee, WI; Donna Love, Milton, WI; nine great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Frances is preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; two sisters, Gladys Stark and Jean Rich and infant brother, James.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. on Monday (February 3, 2003) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Fr. Anthony Birdsall as celebrant.

Friends may call at the church Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Sault Ste. Marie, MI at a later date.

Memorials may be sent to St. Joseph's or Corpus Christi Catholic Schools in Sturgeon Bay.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Care For All Ages and the Skilled Nursing facility of Door County Memorial Hospital for their friendship and excellent care. A special thanks to Fr. Birdsall and the Corpus Christi Church community for their many visits and spiritual support.

RIEMERSMA, ELLA B.

RIEMERSMA, ELLA B., of Dafter, Michigan was born on December 8, 1924. She passed away at War Memorial Hospital on January 29, 2003. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Henry Teske

Henry J. Teske, 85, of Newberry, died Thursday evening June 5, 2003 at the Luce County Annex surrounded by his loving family.

Born on June 8, 1917 in Curtis, son of the late Fred & Emma (Fenske) Teske, Henry married the former Lillian Rapp on January 22, 1942 in Waukegon, Ill.

Henry was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army 1st armored division until his honorable discharge on June 25, 1945. Following his honorable discharge, Henry moved to Newberry where he started his automotive business -- Newberry Truck & Implement Co. Henry dealt in the sales and service of International trucks, Kaiser-Fraser care and later adding Pontiac, Buick, American Motors and Chrysler brands. In 1976, Henry built Teske Motors on South Newberry Ave. and continued in the sale and service of automotives until he sold his interests to Newberry Motors, where he continued as a sales representative until his retirement in 2001, following his 56 years of business service in the community.

Henry was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Newberry where he served as a greeter and usher for over 50 years. Henry was also a former member of the Newberry Water and Light Board, former president of the Newberry Chamber of Commerce, charter member and former president of the Newberry Kiwanis Club and founder and former member of the Newberry Ambassadors. Henry was also a longtime member of the American Legion Post #74 in Newberry and the V.F.W. Post #8372 of Engadine.

Besides his parents, Henry is preceded in death by his brother, Arthur, and sisters: Margaret Krueger and Elsie Singer.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 61 years, Lillian, of Newberry; his children: Lois (Roland) Schroeder of Newberry, Dana (Joseph) Striplin of Ann Arbor, Diane (Dr. Hilary) Newby of Newberry, Ray (Jeanne) Teske of Golden, CO, and Paul (Rosane) Teske of Ann Arbor; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Newberry with Pastor Daniel Clemons officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home cemetery in Newberry with military rites accorded by the members of the V.F.W. Post #8372 of Engadine. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Sunday, June 8, from 4-8 p.m. and also at the church on Monday, June 9 from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Those who wish may contribute to Trinity Lutheran Church in memory of Henry J. Teske.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.
