Mary Kitchen

Mary Fairchild Kitchen was born in Charlotte on Nov. 16, 1948 and died on June 9, 2003 in Sault Ste. Marie. Mary moved to Goetzville with her husband in December 1996.

She was employed at Walmart. She was a life member of Post 79 Raber Amvets Auxiliary of which she was the immediate past president. The amount of friends she has accumulated over the years is evident of her kind heart, thoughtfulness and unselfish ways. She was always willing to help others. She loved her job and many neighbors. She had many special friends too numerous to mention.

Her family was her most prized possession and she took it upon herself to have bragging rights over each one of us. Mary was survived by her husband, Ron; sister, Lynn Fairchild of Harrison; son, Brent (Rosemin) Earls of San Diego, Calif., United States Navy; daughter, Shannon M. Earls of Lansing; stepson, Scott (Jill) Fletcher; stepdaughters Kelli (Joe) Cicinelli and Rhonda (Johnny) Gaedert; two granddaughters, Rachel Fletcher and Jersey Gaedert; four grandsons: Vito Cicinelli and Joseph, Zachery and Jacob Fletcher; and her special, loyal friend, Chris-Me-Pooper.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy (Brown) Fairchild, father, James E. Fairchild and brother, Chucky Fairchild.

When possible she would attend the Stalwart Presbyterian Church. Life will never be the same without Mary.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 12th from 7-9 p.m. at the Ross Funeral Home in Pickford. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 13th at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Clawson officiating.

Her final resting place will be at North Raber cemetery in Raber Township. Ross Funeral Home of Pickford assisted Mary's family with final arrangements.

Ida Richwine

Ida M. "Myrt" Richwine, age 85, of Drummond Island passed away at 9:54 p.m., Monday, June 9, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Sault Ste. Marie.

Myrt was born in DeTour Village on May 16, 1918. She moved to Detroit as a young child where she lived for several years always returning to Drummond Island for the summers. She became a permanent resident of Drummond Island in 1945. She retired as the Drummond Island Township Treasurer where she served the township for more than 20 years. She also cooked at the Drummond Island Elementary School in the 50s and 60s and was a housekeeper for the Drummond Island Yacht Haven during the summer months.

She was a volunteer for many activities at the township hall, was a den mother for the Cub Scouts, and a member of the Drummond Island Homemakers. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and watching the Great Lakes freighters.

Myrt is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Marvin) Kurkierewicz of Charlevoix; two sons, Leslie (Karen) Richwine and William (Carol) Richwine, both of Drummond Island; six grandchildren: Karlene, Billie, and Kim Kurkierewicz, Janet (Jon) Hyatt, and Celia and Benjamin Richwine; and eight great-grandchildren: Ryan LaPeer, Melissa and Adam Thorp, twins Shelbee and Morgan Thorp, Baylei Houtz, Brendon Hyatt, and William Alexander Richwine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl A. Richwine, on April 21,1979; one sister, Melissa Seaman; one brother, Leslie Irish; and her parents, Earl and Emma (Watson) Irish.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 11:00 a.m. at the Drummond Island cemetery with Deacon Charles Krahnke officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be left to the Drummond Island Township Hall in memory of Myrt.

Arrangements are being handled by Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford.

Marjorie Piippo

Marjorie D. Piippo, age 70, of Rudyard passed away at 2:58 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. She was born on August 27, 1932 in St. Ignace Township.

Marjorie lived most of her life in Chippewa and Mackinac counties. She retired in 1994 from the Rudyard Co-op Store where she worked as a cashier for 11 years. She also worked for JFB Manufacturing in St. Ignace as a press operator/assembly person for several years and as a cosmetologist in the Detroit area for a short time.

Marjorie was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Messer-McGahey-Routhier VFW Post #9023 in Brimley and was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary English-Wallis VFW Post #4905 in Rudyard. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, hairdressing and spending time outdoors.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin "Mike" Piippo of Rudyard; a son, Mike John (Terry) Piippo of Rudyard; a daughter, Amy (Matt) Gordon of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, Jeramie (Lacey) and Sarah Piippo, and Kasey and Carol Gordon; one great-grandson, Spencer John Piippo; and a brother, Harold (Pat) Pope of Bradenton, Florida.

Preceding her in death were her father, Raymond Pope, in October 1985; her mother, Anna (Warren) Pope in June 2002, and her first husband, Edwin Kemp in 1986.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford with Reverend Gene Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.

Margaret Wright

Margaret L. Wright, 80, of Sault Ste. Marie entered eternal life on Saturday morning, July 12, 2003 at Tendercare Nursing Home in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born on August 2, 1922 in Sault Ste. Marie and was a lifetime resident of the Sault.

Margaret joined hands in marriage to Everett Wright on October 10, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Her beloved husband, Everett, has preceded her in death on July 20, 1974.

She is survived by her loving children, Carl (Barb) Wright of Crystal, Linda (Roy) Clow of Sugar Island and Charles (Karen) Wright of Sault Ste. Marie; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Annie McMann of Toledo, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Ross Funeral Home, 260 East Main Street, Pickford with Pastor David Letscher officiating. Her family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Her Final Resting Place will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens cemetery beside her loving husband, Everett.

"May They Both Rest in God's Peace."

Margaret Krizman

Margaret J. Krizman, age 82, of South Toledo, Ohio passed away on June 26, 2003. She was born on March 12, 1921 in Raber, Michigan to Robert and Katie (Spence) Kelly. She was a homemaker for all of her married life.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 62 years, John T. Krizman; a daughter, Janet Krizman; sons Thomas (Diane) Krizman and Robert (Pamela) Krizman; a sister, Violet Jones; five grandchildren: Jennifer, Gregory, Brian, Kaitlyn and Courtney; and her great-grandchild, Sadie Jane.

Services were held on Sunday, June 29, 2003 at the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home in Toledo, Ohio. Interment was in Riverside cemetery, Maumee, Ohio. The family suggests memorials be sent to the NWO Hospice, 30,000 East River Road, Perrysburg, OH 43551.

Lionel Anderson

Lionel Robert Anderson, age 89 of Grand Meadow, died Monday, September 9, 2002 at Meadow Manor Nursing Home.

Lionel was born June 24, 1913 at Rudyard, Michigan, the son of John and Margaret (McClarty) Anderson. He graduated from high school and served as a medic in the US Army during WWII and was the recipient of the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Lionel was married to Eva Nettleton on October 15, 1941 at St. Agnes, Michigan. He was an employee of the US Postal Services, living in Michigan and St. Paul, Minnesota. Following his retirement they moved back to the Pickford and Rudyard Michigan area where they resided until moving to Austin in 1998 to be near their family. Earlier this year they moved to the Grand Meadow Healthcare Center.

Lionel was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, making maple syrup, and picking blueberries. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader. In 1940 he accepted the gospel and remained true to it all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Leslie, Cecil, and Stanley, and sisters, May and Easter Lily.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel, with the Reverend Craig Winquist officiating. Interment will be in the Dexter cemetery in Dexter with Austin Post #91 American Legion in charge of military rites. Friends may call for one hour before the services.

Casket bearers will be Hugh Anderson, Jim Irvine, Scott Irvine, Dean Smith, Ray Schwardt, and Tim Irvine.

Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Eva Anderson of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Jim Irvine of Dexter, Minnesota; Laura Jean and Ray Schwardt of Delaven, Minnesota; Heather and Dean Smith of Inner Grove Heights, Minnesota; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Kathleen McGill

Kathleen Z. McGill, age 54, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away on Monday afternoon, September 9, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital.

Kathleen was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan on May 31, 1948. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sault Ste. Marie. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and children.

She is survived by her husband; Daryl McGill; her mother, Esther (Ed) Belleau; a daughter, Deborah (Dan) Maleport of Sault Ste. Marie; two step-daughters, Caryl (Dan) Densmore of Sault Ste. Marie and Sharyl (Wally) Sauenkoff of Cheboygan, Michigan; three step-sons, James (Shannon) McGill and Darin McGill, both of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and Roger McGill of Fairbanks, Alaska; four grandchildren, Kyle Maleport; Jessica Maleport; Mandy McGill; and Erin McGill. She is also survived by a brother, Alan Barr of Cedarville, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Wilkerson, (Alice), and a brother, Charles VanBuren.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2002 at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens, with Kent Kramer officiating. Memorials may be left to the American Cancer Society, Upper Peninsula Area.

Hovie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

STEARNS, FRED

STEARNS, FRED, 55, former Superintendent of the St. Ignace School System, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 11 at Northern Michigan Hospital following a massive stroke while hunting near Rudyard on Tuesday. Funeral services are planned for Saturday, September 14, and a complete obituary will be in Friday's Evening News. Dodson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

JACKSON, BURL

JACKSON, BURL, age 96 of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away September 10, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Unit. No services are being planned. Arrangements were handled by Hovie Funeral Home.

Phyllis Tuck

Phyllis Ann Tuck, age 79, a previous resident of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away at 2:54 a.m. on Sunday morning, November 17th at the Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace, Michigan after a lengthy illness.

Phyllis was born in Toledo, Ohio on April 12, 1923 and spent here early years there, graduating from Scott High School in 1941. She continued her education at Maumee Valley Nursing School, receiving her Registered Nursing Degree in 1946. In 1952, she and her husband moved to Cedarville where they built their home on Hill Island.

For most of her life, Phyllis worked as a private-duty registered nurse. She had worked as an on-call nurse during the construction of the Mackinac Bridge and also worked for War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She retired after working for several years for Dr. Leonard DeLooff at his practice in Cedarville, Michigan. She and Dr. DeLooff devoted much of their time to the organization and training of several area ambulance corps in the EUP.

She was a member of the American Red Cross for 40 years, was a member of the Les Cheneaux Senior Citizen's Club, attended the First Union Church in Cedarville, and was a charter member of the Star of the North Chapter #526 Order of the Eastern Star of Cedarville until her transfer to the Innes Chapter #130 in St. Ignace. In 1977, she was the first woman to receive the Les Cheneaux Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award.

Phyllis enjoyed flowers and was especially fond of Lady Slippers. She also collected Hummel figurines and loved fishing with her husband in the Les Cheneaux Islands.

Phyllis is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Ronald, whom she married in Toledo, Ohio on March 9, 1947; one sister, Betty (Harold) Vernier of Toledo, Ohio; three nieces, Joyce Trudeau, Carol (John) Miller and Susan (Mark) Lottie; one nephew, Jim (Gail) Vernier; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald Charles Tuck, Jr.; two sisters, June Huebner and Kathryn Johnson; and her parents, Ralph and Emily Littlefield.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Reamer Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Foote officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until the time of services. Burial will be in Cedar cemetery in Cedarville, Michigan. Memorials may be left to the Clark Township Ambulance Corps or the Mackinac Straits Long-Term Care Facility.

Richard Haslett

Richard A. (Rick) Haslett passed away at his home in Garden Grove, California on January 12. He was born in Fort Benning, Georgia on August 14, 1946.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, one daughter, Denise (Chris) Kapele, and two grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Jean Haslett of Sault Ste. Marie, and a brother, Perry (Diane) Cushman, also of Sault Ste. Marie. He was predeceased by his father, Joe Haslett in 1999.

A memorial service will be held at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove on January 18.

KINSMAN, JANET

KINSMAN, JANET, 56, formerly of Kinross, Michigan, passed away on January 15, 2003 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was born on November 23, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan.

TENEYCK, PAULA J.

TENEYCK, PAULA J., of Oxford, Michigan, passed away at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Michigan on January 14, 2003. She was born on February 9, 1948. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

WARD III, ROBERT DENTON

WARD III, ROBERT DENTON, of Pickford, Michigan, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at his home. He was born on September 6, 1946 in Petoskey, Michigan.

Arrangements will be announced at a later date by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Homes.

Marie Freeborn

Marie M. Freeborn passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on Sunday, March 30, 2003. She was born in Rosedale Township on April 27, 1925. Marie was a cashier and bookkeeper at Woolworth's Department Store for over 30 years. Marie will be greatly missed by her family, friends, nieces and nephews, and many card playing pals.

Surviving Marie are her sons, Donald (Bonnie) Freeborn of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and John (Brenda) Freeborn of Longmont, Colo.; daughters Connie (Newt) Cook, Cynthia (Abe) Zain of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and DeeDee (Mark) Howard of Kingman, Ariz. Marie's grandchildren are Ann Marie and Amy Cook, Johnathon Freeborn, Michael (Cameron) Freeborn, Donald, Robert and Christopher Freeborn, and Eric, Tiffany and Brenden Howard. Her great-grandchild is Dalton Cook. Marie is also survived by her sisters Hazel Mulligan and Lillian Rye of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and Wonieta Freeborn of Canon City, Colo.

Preceding Marie in death are her husband, Herbert, in 1969, and her brother, Lyle Bumstead, and her sister, Alberta Casper.

Visitation will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at 3 p.m. with Pastor Lou Bergman officiating. Memorials may be left to The Living Word Church or to one's choice.

Alford Trombley

Alford P. Trombley, 71, of Menominee passed away March 26, 2003 at home. He was born October 9, 1931 to Helena (McGuire) and the late Orville Trombley in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Alford married the former Florence Martin September 1950. She preceded him in death January 1985. He was an electrician at Empire Mine for 25 years retiring in 1994.

Alford is survived by his mother, Helena Trombley of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; two daughters, Paulette (Greg) Lamere of Marquette, Mich. and Theresa (Mark) Fowler of Interlochen, Mich.; three sons, William (Mary) of Norway, Mich., John (Tammie) of Carney, Mich. and Albert (Sue) of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Delores (Larry) Wolfgang of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and Phyllis (Louis) Black of Saginaw, Mich.; and one brother, Bernard (Augustine) of Indiana.

Visitation was held Saturday, March 29, 2003 from 1 p.m. until funeral service time at 3 p.m. CST at the Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson, with Reverend Gary Page officiating. Burial will be in the Forsyth Township cemetery, Gwinn.
