Alva Toretta

Alva Cella Toretta, 90, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie and Iron Mountain, Mich. passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003 at Mackinac County Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace, Mich. She was born February 17, 1913 in Norway, Mich. to Gustav F. and Olga A. (Blomgren) Bostrom.

Alva graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. in 1934 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music. She married Humbert "Smiley" Toretta on September 14, 1940 in Chicago, Ill. She was a vocal teacher in Kingsford, Mich. and an elementary school teacher in Sault Ste. Marie.

Alva loved music. She often performed as a soloist and was with the Musicale Club in both Sault Ste. Marie and Iron Mountain. She played the organ, piano, violin and viola and gave voice lessons. She was the choir director at the Trinity Methodist Church in Iron Mountain and the Episcopal and Presbyterian Churches in Sault Ste. Marie. She was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Country Club and the Bridge Club. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Her children will remember her as "the best Mom in the world."

Alva is survived by two sons, Robert Toretta of Norway, Mich. and Bud F. (Sharon) Toretta of Chelsea, Ala.; two daughters, Sally (Bob) Gallimore of Advance, N.C. and Carolyn Beacom of Cedarville, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Chrys Bostrom; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind two very special friends, Coralie Gustafson of Fargo, N.D. and Marge Woods of Baltimore, Md.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Smiley, on March 23, 2001; son-in-law, David C. Beacom, Jr. on June 22, 2000; and two brothers, Fred and Robert Bostrom.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 31, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford, Mich. with Reverend Lynn Chappell officiating. Interment will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain, Mich.

Memorials may be left to the Stained Glass Window Fund, Pickford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 128, Pickford, MI 49774.

Arrangements were handled by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Mich.

COOK, MARGARET E.

COOK, MARGARET E., passed away at War Memorial Hospital on March 30, 2003. She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on December 5, 1913. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

BECKER, DANIEL

BECKER, DANIEL, 34, of St. Ignace died at 6:10 p.m. Sunday evening at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care following a 2 1/2 year illness. Arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace.

Kenneth Atkinson

Kenneth Victor Atkinson of Santa Paula, California passed away on Friday, May 23, 2003. He was born on September 22, 1918 in Sault Ste. Marie.

During World War II he joined the Navy. After his discharge, he signed on with McWilliam's & Helmers, Inc. to build military bases in Greenland during the rest of the war. After his return to California, he became a newspaper distributor for the Los Angeles Times and held that position until his retirement. Kenneth enjoyed fishing and golf with his friends in the Santa Paula area and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Santa Paula.

He is survived by his wife, Inez L. (Sartain) Atkinson; his son, Bryce Atkinson; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Georgina M. (Graham) Atkinson; his brothers, Albert, Carl and Chester Atkinson; and his sisters Doris Brueckner (George), Eva Brawley (Leonard) and Eleanor Modine (Carl).

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and the cremated remains will be buried in Donaldson cemetery, Chippewa County alongside his parents, brothers and sister.

Elaine DeWitte

Elaine (Soczek) DeWitte, age 77, of Troy passed away at 3:10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at Troy Beaumont Hospital following a short illness.

She was born May 28, 1926 in Goetzville where she attended school and graduated from DeTour High School. She worked at the Kresge store in Sault Ste. Marie for a short time before moving to Royal Oak. Elaine was a Michigan Bell telephone operator in Royal Oak and Detroit, retiring as a supervisor after 36 years of employment.

She was member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Goetzville. She loved to travel and enjoyed hunting, fishing, flower gardening, and going to the casinos.

Elaine is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, H. Frank DeWitte, whom she married on June 16, 1956 in Hazel Park. Also surviving are one brother, Joseph (Caroline) Soczek of Goetzville; two sisters, Helen (Donald) Simanskey of Midland and Veronica Olmstead of St. Ignace; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Soczek, of Goetzville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Edward Soczek; two sisters, Lenore Soczek and Mary Lee; and her parents, Frank and Clara Soczek.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 13 at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford with parish prayers at 8:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 14 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Goetzville with Father Sebastian Chacko celebrant. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Kostka cemetery.

Memorials may be left to the St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church Memorial Fund.

GRIFFITH, MARY VAIL

GRIFFITH, MARY VAIL, age 71, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie died on May 6, 2003. A memorial service was held on June 3rd in Bloomfield Hills. Arrangements were handled by Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors.

Janice A. Samson

A memorial celebrating the life of Janice A. Samson will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2003 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crow's Nest of the Cisler Center on the campus of LSSU.

Charlene Heuer

Charlene M. Heuer of Barbeau, formerly a resident of Farmington Hills, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 29, 2003 after a brief illness. She was 76 years old.

Charlene was born in Ypsilanti on July 2, 1927 to Truman and Alice Collins. She was a graduate of Ypsilanti High School, class of 1945 and attended classes at Eastern Michigan University.

Charlene married August F. (Gus) Heuer in 1950 and moved to Farmington Hills where they raised their three daughters. Their home was always filled with friends and family. However, her greatest role was of Grandma to six grandchildren who will forever be enriched by her grace.

An active member of the Pickford Methodist Church, she is now in the hands of her Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald, and survived by her husband, Gus; brother, Robert Collins; daughters: Pamela (Brian) Brown, Paulette (Steven) Loe, Patricia (Arthur) Hamilton; and grandchildren: Brandon (Regan) Brown, Allison Brown, Andy Anderson, Sarah (Mark) Piggott, Clint and Ben Loe.

Downstate Memorial Services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Commerce United Methodist Church located at 1155 N. Commerce Rd. in Commerce Township. Local Memorial Services will be held on Monday, October 6, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Pickford Methodist Church in Pickford.

Catherine Geniesse

Catherine A. Geniesse, of Sault Ste. Marie died on Friday September 26, 2003 at Brandon Hospital in Brandon, Florida. She recently relocated to Florida to be with her family. She was born March 17, 1927 in Tinley Park, Illinois, and lived in Menominee, Mich. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of the Sault, Women of the Moose Chapter 1484 St. Ignace, EUP Antique Equipment Association and Buckley Old Engine Club.

Catherine (Katie) is survived by five children: Bernard (Jane) Geniesse, Jr. of Jackson; David (Rayette) Geniesse of Jackson; Michael (Sandra) Geniesse of TeriCia Island, Florida; Susanne Smith of Valrico, Florida; and Robert (Katherine) Geniesse of Brandon, Florida; three sisters, Elaine Konyn of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, Mary Jessel of Oconto, Wisconsin, and Margaret Enos of Sault St. Marie; two brothers, Theodore Borst of Duluth, Minnesota; Richard Borst of Irons; seven grandchildren: Shawn, Jason, Megan, Seth, Catherine, Laura and Audra Geniesse; and a great-granddaughter, Mikayla.

Catherine is predeceased by her husband, Bernard Geniesse; a son, Francis; parents, Theodore and Mary Borst; brothers Lawrence, Cornelius, Adrian; and sister, Lorraine.

Memorial Services are being planned for late June of 2004.

Final resting place will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Lloyd Arnott

Lloyd "Bill" Arnott passed away at his home on September 27, 2003. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie on December 25, 1926. Bill served in the U.S. Armed Forces during W.W.II after which he entered into his career with the U.S. Corps of Engineers.

Bill Arnott is survived by his brothers Glen (Doris) Arnott of Sault Ste. Marie and Paul (Mona) Arnott of Great Falls, Montana. He is preceded in death by his sister, Gayle Mills, and his brother, Donald.

Visitation for Mr. Arnott will be at Hovie Funeral Home on Thursday, October 2 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow at Hovie Funeral Home at 1 p.m. with Reverend David Henderson officiating. Interment will take place at Riverside cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be left to the First United Presbyterian Church Rebuilding Fund.

DeLUCA, FRANK A.

DeLUCA, FRANK A., of Sault Ste. Marie passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 17, 1920. Arrangements are being handled by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home and will be announced at a later date.

June Pratt

June Frances (Lord) Pratt, age 82, of N6053 Percy Road, Shingleton died at 4:05 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2003 at her home with her family and hospice care around her.

June was born on January 28, 1921 in Munising, the daughter of the late Frank and Zelia (Rivard) Lord. She was a graduate of the William G. Mather High School with the Class of 1939 and was a lifelong resident of the Munising and Shingleton areas.

On December 23, 1949, the former June F. Lord married Donald R. Pratt.

June worked for the Kimberly Clark Paper Mill in Munising and worked in a factory in Detroit, making parts during the war. She was an avid 4-H leader and also active in the Farm Bureau. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to Canada, playing bingo, going to the casino, gardening, putting up canned goods, picking berries and being with her children and grandchildren. She especially loved having family and friends over to sit down to a great cooked meal.

June is survived by her husband of 53 years, Donald R. Pratt, of Shingleton; six daughters: Dona (Roger) Sager of Negaunee, Diane (Charlie) Parish of Brimley, Barbara (Dallas) Clute of Colon, June (Ren/) Bernier of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Mary (David) Simpson of Burton and Betty (Patrick) Briggs of Harrisburg, Oregon; son-in-law, Bud Bussineau of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; 26 grandchildren: Paul (Lynn) Milton, Vincent (Barb) Milton, Aaron Milton, Lloyd (Alicia) Milton, Becky (Luigi) Torreti, Mindy (James) Kolky, Kenneth (Amy) Heryman, D. Rob Heryman, Corrina (Blane) Adams, Lindsay (Michael) Vaughn, David (Julie) Bussineau Jr., James Bussineau, Tom Bernier, Billie Jo (Alberto), Rose and Amy Bronson, Matthew and Morgan Simpson, Zelia (Brian) Nieson, Katie, Sean and Sara Briggs, Phillip, Cheryl, Terry and Shane (Tracy) Bussineau; 29 great-grandchildren: Corey, Vincent Jr., Cindy, Summer, Raven, Kenneth III, Samantha, Megan, Catalina, Donald Jr., Zachery, Chene, Ocean, Michael, Trevor, Caleb, Chloe, Kaidence, Devin, Sierra, Michael, Jacob, Judson, Alex, Brandy, Christina, Johnny, Christopher and Gary; one great-great-grandson, Robert; a sister, Marvel (Wayne) McNally of Munising; a sister-in-law, Nelda Miller of Gowen; and an aunt, Marguerite Rivard of Munising.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon; a sister, Ruby; her children Jean, Gary and Frances; and a grandson, Kenneth Swajanen Jr.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 7 at the Sacred Heart Church in Munising.

The Messier-Broullire Funeral Home of Manistique assisted the family with the arrangements.

Thomas Rose

Thomas A. "Fred" Rose of W. Strawberry Lane in Rudyard passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at his home. He was born on December 28, 1925 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Mr. Rose was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rudyard and also a member of both the Kinross Township and Rudyard Township Volunteer Fire Departments.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline R. (Miller) Rose, of Rudyard; two sons, Michael F. (Sandy) Rose of Cheboygan and William E. (Nancy) Rose of Sault Ste. Marie; four daughters: Deborah K. (Frank) Formolo of Naubinway, Marianne E. Monroe of Rudyard, Susan P. (Charles) Dorsey of Sault Ste. Marie and Danette M. (Carl) Cameron of Brimley; a brother, James Daniel "Dan" Rose, of Dafter; a sister, Patricia Louise Rose, of Dafter; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas F. and Elizabeth (Aube) Rose; two half-brothers, George and Harry Graham; and two sisters, Laverne Longley of Livonia and Thomasine Cutler of Muskegon.

Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, November 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rudyard with Father Francis DeGroot officiating. His final resting place will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in memory of Mr. Rose to the Hospice of Chippewa County or to the St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Rudyard Building Fund.

Arrangements are being handled by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home of Sault Ste. Marie.

Mary Spence

Mary E. Spence, age 80, a resident of Seven Mile, Ohio went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 11:49 a.m. in Mercy Hospital, Fairfield. She was born on January 13, 1923 in Muncie, Indiana the daughter of Lee and Elizabeth (Fox) Rhoades.

She was a graduate of Bethesda School of Nursing in 1944 and started her nursing career at Fort Hamilton, then for 20 years at Mercy Hospital Hamilton becoming a charge nurse and spent 10 years as a Butler County Health Department nurse. She married Carl R. Spence on October 16, 1945 in New Miami, Ohio. She was a member of Seven Mile United Methodist, served on the Senior Citizen Fellowship Group at the church and was a member of VFW Auxiliary, Post 7670 and a lifetime member of the Bethesda Nursing Association. She was a good and faithful wife, devoted mother and loving grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Carl; two sons, Thomas C. Spence and wife, Darla, of Springboro, Ohio and Timothy C. Spence and wife, Sandy, of Brimley; three grandchildren: Jennifer Spence, Brian Spence and wife, Rebecca, and Randy Spence. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lewis Rhoades; and a sister, Jeanette Schwein.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5 at 10 a.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 980 N. W. Washington Blvd. in Hamilton, Ohio with Rev. Thomas Brunner officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Flat cemetery. Visitation was on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Seven Mile United Methodist Church, 211 Church Street, Seven Mile, Ohio 45062 or The American Arthritis Foundation, 7124 Miami Ave., Maderia, Ohio 45243.

Theodore Sieloff

Theodore W. Sieloff, age 84, of Mike's Landing Road in Raber passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at his home. He was born on July 9, 1919 in Taylor.

Ted retired in 1983 as a locomotive engineer from Great Lakes Steel in Ecorse where he had worked for 42 years. He was also a farmer while he lived in Taylor. In 1985, he moved to the U.P. Ted served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the European campaign.

Ted was a member of the American Legion Post 217 in Wyandotte and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Taylor. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and snowmobiling.

Ted is survived by his loving wife, Helen (Bender), whom he married on September 6, 1947 in Taylor; one son, Larry (Sharron) Sieloff of Aurora, Ohio; two daughters, Marilyn Kielbasa of Flint, and Patricia (Dan) Muscavitch of Rices Landing, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren: Laurea (Jim) Markov, Scott (Meridy) Sieloff, Bill Sieloff, Marti Kaye Kielbasa, Michael Kielbasa, Julie Muscavitch and Matthew Muscavitch; three great grandchildren: Marissa and Elisabeth Dentz and Arianna Sieloff; three brothers: Ernest (Doris) Sieloff of Bradenton, Florida, Herbert (Helen) Sieloff of Bradenton, Florida and Howard (Dee) Sieloff of Henderson, Nevada; and one sister, Lillian Caban of Wyandotte.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Gordon Sieloff; and by two sisters, Harriet Romanowski and June Grzegorczyk.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 6 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford with a prayer service at 7 p.m. by Reverend Milton Adams.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, November 7 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Taylor with Reverend Stephen Long officiating. Friends may call at the church from 2 p.m. until the time of service.

Burial will be at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock.

Memorials may be left to the Hospice of Chippewa County, 125 Arlington Street, Suite 16, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
