Charles Pemble

Charles Bruce "Burley" Pemble, 51, of St. Ignace died early Wednesday morning, July 31, 2002 at his apartment on N. State Street.

He was born March 17, 1951 in St. Ignace to Blair Sr. and Rita (Furlott) Pemble. He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1969. He worked for Pemble Brothers Wholesale for many years in sales and delivery, and also was a Commercial Fisherman. He is a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Life Member. Burley was an excellent and avid golfer, and a fisherman. He lived in St. Ignace all his life, and loved his family. He was also a member of the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church.

He is survived by a son, Christopher Pemble of Petoskey; one brother, Blair "Uzz" Pemble Jr. of St. Ignace; five sisters: Bonnie Ryerse of Lansing; Sue (Donald) Hakola of Rudyard; Jeanne Gabres of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Glenda Pemble of Denver, Colo.; and Barbara (Paul) Edgren of Traverse City. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Blair and Rita Pemble, in 1969 and a brother, David Pemble, in 1976.

Friends may call at Dodson Funeral Home on Sunday, August 4 from 5-7 p.m. Services will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Father Norbert B. Landreville officiating. Cremation will follow and his remains will be buried in St. Ignatius cemetery with his parents and brother.

COWAN, EDNA "ALEYN"

COWAN, EDNA "ALEYN," age 99, of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. passed away Thursday morning, August 1, 2002 at Tendercare Nursing Home. Arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Maria "Nancy" Capriccioso

Maria "Nancy" Capriccioso, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on Saturday, September 7, 2002 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. She was born on September 8, 1915 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

A Sault Michigan resident for over 60 years, she was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, a former President of the St. Joseph Catholic School Parent Teacher Association, and worked as a cook in the Sault public school system. Nancy was very family oriented, deeply loving her children and her grandchildren.

Mrs. Capriccioso is survived by two sons, John M. Capriccioso of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; Richard P. (Sharon) Capriccioso of West Bloomfield, Michigan; three daughters-in-law, Marcella Capriccioso of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Linda Clos of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Sharon Capriccioso of Midland, Michigan; one brother, Anthony Provenzano of Yonkers, New York; one sister, Grace Burns of O'Fallon, Illinois; and grandchildren, Caryn Capriccioso of Boulder, Colorado; Gina Capriccioso of Louisville, Colorado; John K. Capriccioso of Chicago, Illinois; Robert Capriccioso II of Washington, D.C.; David Capriccioso of East Lansing, Michigan; Jena Capriccioso of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Christina Capriccioso of West Bloomfield, Michigan; and Richard Capriccioso II of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

She is predeceased by her husband, John Capriccioso; and two sons, David James Capriccioso and Robert Joseph Capriccioso.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Prayers will be at 8:00 p.m.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Final resting place will be the Riverside cemetery.

Memorial contributions to St. Joseph's Catholic Church or Our Lady Refuge Catholic Church would be appreciated.

Mary Finnerty

Mary Patricia "Pat" Finnerty (Melling, Keyser) of Lansing, Michigan, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie and Eaton Rapids, Michigan, age 82, died on September 8, 2002, at a hospice house in Lansing, Michigan. She was born in Jackson, Michigan, on December 1, 1919. Pat was predeceased by her husbands, Raynor Keyser and Harold Finnerty; her parents, John and Theresa Melling; brothers, Theo, Francis, Philip, and James; and sisters, Angela Hopkins and Winifred Faulkner. She is survived by her sons, Donald (Bonnie) Keyser, Wesley (Ruth) Keyser, Joseph (Trish) Finnerty, Tom (Ann) Finnerty, and Dan (Jan) Finnerty; daughters, Colleen (Ed) Evert, Jeanne (Larry) Cadotte, Mary Ellen Boyd, Sharon (Mike) Makulski, and Therese (Andy) Curtis; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several special nieces and nephews.

Pat co-owned and managed the Grand Motel in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan from 1964-1976. When she retired to Eaton Rapids, Michigan, she was active in numerous community organizations throughout the years, including: The Third Order of St. Dominic, Child Study Club, Sault Ste. Marie League of Women Voters, Sault Ste. Marie Mental Health Board, and the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital Auxiliary. While raising a blended family of ten, Pat handled life's ups and downs with poise and faith. Becoming a businesswoman at the age of 44, she turned the Grand Motel into a successful year-round business. She loved music, singing, and entertaining and will be remembered for her grace, style, and sense of humor.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 12, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1611 W. Oakland, Lansing, with Father Timothy Byrnes officiating. The Rite of Committal will be held in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery, Lansing.

The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman. Co. East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand Ave., East Lansing, on Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with the Rosary being prayed at 4 p.m. The family requests that donations be made to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, P.O. Box 30480, Lansing, Michigan, 48909-9986, or to Masses in her honor.

Paul Alan Pascal

Paul Alan Pascal, of Bay Mills, Michigan, died on Monday, September 9, 2002, at his home. He was born on October 2, 1960, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He passed on after a long struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Hospice of Chippewa County and his mother, Wanda, was at Paul's side.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Wanda Everrette Waishkey of Bay Mills, Michigan; two sisters, Gail (Alton) Lamparter of Jackson, Michigan and Trista (Gary) Miller of Manchester, Michigan; four step-brothers, Alan Waishkey, Charles Waishkey, Gordon Waishkey, and Michael Waishkey; one step-sister, Helen Cruz; and one niece, Lilly Miller.

Mr. Pascal is predeceased by his father, Paul Pascal.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2002 at 7 p.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Dan Walters. Arrangements are by the Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

Steven Wood

Former Newberry resident, Steven A. Wood, 45, of Escanaba, died Friday evening, September 6, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. Mr. Wood had been a resident of Bridgewood Central in Escanaba for the past two years.

Born February 25, 1957 in Battle Creek, Michigan, son of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Davis) Wood, Steve had been a Newberry resident for a few years. He was involved with Pathways Behavior Health and as a child enjoyed visiting the Newberry area to visit his grandparents.

Besides his parents, Steven is preceded in death by his brother, Daniel. Survivors include his sisters Brenda Yockey of Coldwater and Linda Cross of Dafter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Aron Thomas presiding. Interment will follow at Forest Home cemetery in Newberry. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 11 from 1:00 p.m. until time of services.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

McGILL, KATHLEEN

McGILL, KATHLEEN, died September 9, 2002, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was born on May 31, 1948. Arrangements will be made by Hovie Funeral Home.

Carl Beamish

Carl Robert "Bob" Beamish, 73, died Nov. 11, 2002 in Seattle, Wash. He was born on June 29, 1929 in Donaldson, Mich. to the late William and Letitia Beamish.

Bob was the husband of Eunice. He retired as a custodian of the Seattle School System.

Bob is survived by his daughters Cindy and Letitia, a son, Ralph, and a step-son, Mickey McMillan, all of Seattle; three brothers: Wallace (Ruth) of St. Louis, Mo., John (Pearl) of Sault Ste. Marie, and Earl of Brimley; two sisters: Alma (Larry) Rubin of St. Louis, Mo. and Clara (Tom) Johndrow of Sault Ste. Marie.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Wilmer, Alvin and George; and three sisters: Ethele Cottle, Ida Cartwright and Freda Osborn.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 13 in Seattle.

Martha Shawhan

Martha "Marty" C. Shawhan of Minneapolis Street passed away on November 14, 2002 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Mich. She was born on June 26, 1939 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Marty was a member of St. Mary's ProCathedral Church and an active member in the St. Mary's Altar Society. She was a volunteer with the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Her memberships also included the Medjugorje Prayer Group and the Lake State Chorus.

Marty is survived by a son, Joseph (Laura) Shawhan of Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters: Sheri (Joseph) Newcomb of Dafter, and Karla (Richard) Shawhan-Bonnee of Walloon Lake; three sisters: Adele Goupille of Negaunee, Mary Wood of Sault Ste. Marie, and Sadie Atkinson of Sault Ste. Marie; seven grandchildren: Lee Newcomb, Jami Newcomb, Stacy Bonnee, Mia Shawhan, Jordan Shawhan and Rachel Shawhan; and two great-grandchildren: Trisha Clark and Elyce Newcomb.

She was predeceased by her parents, Elias and Marina Andary; a sister, Genevieve Schwartz; and two brothers: Anthony Andary and Paul C. Andary.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Celebrant will be Father Ted Brodeur. Rosary services will at 8:15 p.m.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 18, 2002 at St. Mary's ProCathedral Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul or St. Mary's Parish.

NIEMI, MOLLY C.

NIEMI, MOLLY C., of Sault Ste. Marie passed away this morning, November 15, 2002 at Tendercare Nursing Home. She was born on March 4, 1916 in Hastings, Minnesota. Arrangements will be announced later by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

McGILL, DARYL C.

McGILL, DARYL C., of Sault Ste. Marie passed away early this morning, November 15, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 10, 1937. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

JUDA, ROBERT

JUDA, ROBERT of Riverside Drive in Pickford, Michigan entered eternal peace with his Lord this morning, November 15, 2002 at his home with his family at his side after a battle with cancer. Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by the Ross Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan.

Ava Cameron

Ava Maria Cameron, age 73 of Travelers Rest, South Carolina died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. Ava was born in Vienna, Austria on February 13, 1929, where she studied art, music and fashion design.

Ava loved singing, gardening, cooking, camping, mushroom and herb gathering, reading, storytelling, knitting, painting and visiting with friends. For years she baked and sold bread from her home in Dollar Settlement. She sang soprano with the Mary Woods Choir in Sault Ste. Marie and later with the Gap Creek Singers in South Carolina.

She was predeceased by her husband, William "Doc Bill" Cameron, who was a member of the Bay Mills Indian Community and a well-known fiddler in the Eastern U.P.

Ava is survived by one brother, Peter Voit, and four children: John, Michael, Peter and Linda; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.

A memorial service was held at the Second Baptist Church in Travelers Rest, South Carolina.

A second memorial service is planned for spring 2003 in Dollar Settlement, when Ava's ashes will be scattered. A memorial announcement will be published.

Myrtle Adam

Myrtle Beacom Adam of Pickford, Michigan passed away Friday, March 21, 2003 in Avon Park, Florida. She was born January 14, 1921 in Pickford, Michigan to Delbert and Mary (Hoath) Huyck.

Myrtle was an insurance agent who owned and operated Beacom Insurance Agency in Pickford for many years. She was a member of the Pickford United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Gideon International Auxiliary, Women's Christian Temperance Union, Pickford Area Senior Citizens Club, and Prime Timers of Avon Park, Florida. Myrtle lived daily by Psalm 118:24, "This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it."

Myrtle is survived by her husband of 40 years, Arthur G. Adam; three sons, Richard (Sharon) Beacom of Pickford, Michigan; Ronald (Karen) Adam of Davison, Michigan; and Gary (Prudy) Adam of Fenton, Michigan; one daughter, Marilyn (Steve) Huyck of Highland, Indiana; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Beacom of Cedarville, Michigan; 14 grandchildren, Kristin (Phil) Shriner, Brent Beacom, Brooke Beacom, David C. (Cathy) Beacom III, Marc Beacom, Ashley (Steve) Robinson, Michael (Amy) Adam, Troy Adam, Suzanne Adam, David (Lori) Conroy, Lisa (Jon) Anderson, Kim (Tim) Harpst, Taliaha (Kurt) Koutz, and Steven D. Huyck; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband David C. Beacom on July 10, 1960; her son David C. Beacom II on June 22, 2000; three brothers, Orries, Darrell, and Ordell Huyck; and two sisters, Betty Curry and Karen Leach.

Visitation will be Friday, March 28, 2003 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held at the Pickford United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2003 with Reverend Lynn Chappell officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be left to the Pickford United Methodist Church, Gideons International, or Avon Park Camp Meeting Association.

Arrangements are being handled by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan.

Frank Stolpe

Frank Xavier Stolpe was born May 25, 1932 in Ishpeming, Mich. and passed away March 20, 2003 at his winter home in Tucson, Ariz.

He attended schools in Berkley and Royal Oak, Mich., and worked for the Ford Motor Company before he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He served as an engineer on several Coast Guard Cutters in Korea, Vietnam and Alaska and was base Engineer in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. He was a marine inspector in San Francisco, Calif. After 30 years of service to his country, he retired in 1980. Frank then worked for Sun Oil Company as an Engineer until Retirement in 1990. Frank and Mildred Nighswonger Ryan were married April 5, 1973 in the Chapel at Kincheloe AFB, Mich.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3676 and the Elks Post 552, both in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and a member of the American Legion in Tucson, Ariz. Frank enjoyed golfing, fishing, bocceball, bowling and spending time visiting with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Milli; daughter, Anne Morris; son-in-law, Mike; grandchildren, Amanda (Brent) and Kolby (Adrienne); and 4 nieces.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Northern Michigan Heart Foundation, 360 Connable Ave., Petoskey, MI 49770.

Diane McDaniel

Diane B. McDaniel, 52, of Rudyard, passed away on March 26, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie, following a six-month illness. She was born on July 5, 1950 in Fibre, Michigan to Victor and Edna (Steele) Sylvester.

She had been employed in the accounting department with the Sault Tribe, Chippewa Indians in Sault Ste. Marie. She had a special interest in crocheting and enjoyed time spent with her grandson, Jared.

She is survived by a son, Jason McDaniel; grandson, Jared of Traverse City; four sisters: Barbara (and Clem) DesRochers of Brimley, M. Eileen (and Leo) Kemp of Rudyard, Marjorie (and Lloyd) St. Louis of Rudyard, and Marjean Sanford also of Rudyard; two brothers, Roger Sylvester of Rudyard and Ronald Sylvester of Lakewood, New Jersey and her special friend, Mark.

The family will receive friends at the Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford on Saturday, March 29, 2003 from 10:30 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. with Rev. Rodney Case officiating. Interment will take place at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.

NESLON, DIANNE, 64, of Newberry, passed away this morning, March 28, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home of Sault Ste. Marie.
