SMITH, THELMA I., Of Detroit. passed away March 30, 1998. Retired from Mt. Carmel Hospital in Detroit as a Social Worker. She was very active in her church Central United Methodist Church in Detroit. Dear sister of K. Harry Smith of Holly, MI, Norma Wirgau of Apache Junction, AZ and Dorothy Chinn of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 4 nieces, 10 nephews and their families. Predeceased by her parents Fred and Ethel Smith, sister Marian Hines and her brother Elwin Smith. She was honored as Social Worker of the Year in 1985 by the Detroit Chapter of National Assoc. of Social Workers. She previously worked for Burroughs and Caregivers, when it was known as Homemakers. She was active in the following organizations WILPF, UNICEF, Swords & Plowshares Peace Gallery and Center, Commission of Church and Society, Phi Beta Kappa; Past President of the Greater Detroit Memorial Society, the Senior Center, Alumni of Wayne State Univ. School Social Work and she was her churches representative for Bread for The World. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned at Central United Methodist Church, 23 Adams (corner of Woodward) in Detroit on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Central United Methodist Church or Women s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF).

FREDRICK, DANIEL H., Age 89. Lt. Col, USAF (retired), Chaplain. Died March 31, 1999. Rev. Fredrick was born in Luckey, OH. He graduated Capital University Seminary in 1937 and served churches in Ohio before going into the military. In World War II, he served as an Army Chaplain in the South Pacific. After the war he returned to Ohio and in 1951 he was recalled to active duty with the Air Force and served for 15 years in Korea, France, Germany and Ethiopia. Upon retirement, he was called by the Ethiopian government to become pastor of the International Lutheran Church in Addis Ababa. Rev. Fredrick then served as pastor of the Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church on the coast of North Carolina. He went on to become the first Chaplain of the Seamen s Center the State Port in Morehead City, NC. Being fluent in several languages from his military days, he was able to communicate with sailors from many countries who docked there. Funeral Monday 7 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, ELCA, Wilson, NC. Interment Arlington National cemetery at a later date. Survivors include a sister, Lillian Zemmin of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. Memorials are suggested to Ascension Lutheran Church, 2512 W. Nash St., Wilson, NC 27896.
