Lucille Payment

Lucille Agnes "Polly" Payment, age 75, a lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away at 9:20 a.m., Friday, September 26, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie after a short illness. She was born October 21, 1927 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Orville and Violet (Ellis) Gregg.

Polly was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed fishing, flower gardening, traveling and senior day at the casino.

Polly is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, William H. Payment, who she married September 13, 1946 in Sault Ste. Marie; six sons, William G. (Laurie) Payment of Sault Ste. Marie, Orville (Donna) Payment of Sault Ste. Marie, James (Janice) Payment of Kinross, Michigan, Richard (Penny) Payment of Hessel, Michigan, Leo (Crystal) Payment of Atlanta, Georgia and Gerald (Janet) Payment of Highland, Michigan; twenty-two grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; three brothers, Norman (Edith) Gregg of Marquette, Michigan, Harold Gregg and Donald (Karen) Gregg of Sault Ste. Marie; and two sisters, Norma (Warren) McRorie of Sault Ste. Marie and Diane (George) Watton of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Nancy Gregg, Beulah Colby and Dorothy Gregg and by her parents.

At her request no services will be held. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be left to the American Cancer Society, Chippewa County Unit, P.O. Box 233, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.

Arrangements were handled by Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan.

William Houghton

William V. Houghton, 44, of Kincheloe, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2003.

Born July 26, 1959 in Manistique, son of the late Vern D. & Elizabeth (Johnson) Houghton, William was raised in the Engadine area and a graduate of Engadine High School.

William was a resident and active community volunteer in Kincheloe for the past 17 years and was employed as a correction officer at the Hiawatha Correctional Facility for 10 years, until his retirement due to his declining health. William was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the U.S. Amateur Boxing Inc., and former member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Engadine and the Knights of Columbus Council in Grayling. His hobbies included boxing, and he was a fan of all sports.

Survivors include his children, Bradly of Sault Ste. Marie, Ashly of Kincheloe and Jordan of Sault Ste. Marie; former wife Sharon Houghton of Sugar Island; siblings Daryl Houghton, Kim (Cathy) Houghton, Marianne Houghton, Michael (Sally) Houghton and Patricia (Terry) Teeples all of Engadine; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, William is preceded in death by his brother, Keith Houghton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, September 30 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Engadine with Fr. Tim Hruska officiating. Rite of Committal and Native American rites will follow at the Naubinway cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday, September 29 from 4-7 p.m. with prayers for the deceased recited at 6 p.m.

Those who wish may contribute to the American Diabetes Association in memory of William V. Houghton.

Sylvia Johnston

Sylvia Johnston, age 52, of Kincheloe, Michigan passed away Saturday, August 31, 2002 at Marquette General Hospital.

Sylvia was born in Marion, Indiana on November 15, 1949, the daughter of the late Robert and Jean Elizabeth Cloud. For many years, she worked grooming pets. Within the last year, she was becoming more active with the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, watching movies, and working with animals. She loved living in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

She is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Don) Johnston-Bilger of Traverse City, Michigan and Michelle (Robert) Duran of Kincheloe, Michigan; a son, Michiel W. (Lindsey) Johnston of Kincheloe, Michigan; seven grandchildren, Tia, Deanna, Ashton Lynn, Robert, Ricky, Makayla, and Mya; and her husband, Michiel D. Johnston.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 6, 2002 at Hovie Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2002 at the Funeral Home with Deacon Bill Piche officiating. Burial will be at the Kinross Lakeside cemetery.

Eva Southall

Eva Jean Southall, of E. 24th Ave., Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at War Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 29, 1928 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She enjoyed her grandchildren, family and friends, the most to whom she shared her heart.

She is survived by a son, William P. (Josefina) Southall of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; a daughter, Patti Pacheco of Germany; three brothers, Patrick H. Griffin of Illinois; Paul (Marlene) Griffin Sr. of Cedarville, Michigan; Richard Griffin of Lansing, Michigan; two sisters, Anna (Bill) St. Onge of Cedarville and Pauline (Ronald) Nordquist of Cedarville, Michigan; sister-in-law Maxine Griffin of Alpena, Michigan; three grandchildren, Roseanna Pacheco, Bobby Southall, and Andrew Burnett, all of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; two very dear friends, Jim and Gloria Callon of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and one great-nephew also survive.

She is predeceased by her brother, Robert Wayne Griffin and parents, Patrick H. and Mildred B. (Moore) Griffin.

A memorial mass will be held on Monday, September 29, 2003 at noon at St. Mary's ProCathedral Church. Clergy is Father Ted Brodeur.

Final resting place will be Cedar cemetery in Cedarville, Michigan in the springtime.

Blanche Deuman

Blanche E. Deuman of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on September 23, 2003. She was born on Neebish Island, a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Blanche also worked at War Memorial Hospital for 26 years.

Blanche is survived by two brothers; John (Teressa) Lawrence of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Thomas (Karen) Lawrence of Wisconsin, and two sisters; Georgina (Robert) Miller of Barbeau, Michigan, and Pauline (Joseph) Sauro of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Andrew Lawrence and Ethel May (Cruickshank), as well as two sisters, Thelma Valk and Ruth Lawrence and a brother, James Lawrence.

Visitation for Blanche Deuman will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Friday, September 26, 2003 from noon to 2:00 p.m. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., also at Hovie Funeral Home on Friday, September 26, 2003 with Don Myers officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be left to the First Presbyterian Church Re-building Fund.

KALBELEISCH, SELDEN H.

KALBELEISCH, SELDEN H., 91 of St. Ignace, died Wednesday morning, September 24, 2003 at his home. Arrangements are being handled by Dodson Funeral Home, St. Ignace.

FREELAND, GEORGIA L.

FREELAND, GEORGIA L., of Sugar Island, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at her home. Arrangements will be announced at a later date by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

Alex Kay

Alex Kay, age 89 of Cedarville, Michigan, entered into Eternal Peace with his Lord on Saturday morning, July 27, 2002 at his home after a long illness. He was born to the late John and Elizabeth Kay on October 1, 1912 in Stalwart, Michigan. He was a lifetime resident of Mackinac County. He attended the Pickford School through the 8th grade. He joined hands in marriage to Anna Gustafson on March 12, 1932 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, celebrating over 70 years of marriage. At the age of 33, he served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Michigan Limestone, retiring in 1975. Was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Cedarville, Michigan. He was a volunteer for Mackinac County Straits Hospice for many years. He loved fishing, hunting, boxing, sport activities of the children and grandchildren and enjoyed Tiger baseball.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anna of Cedarville; two daughters, Marjorie Izzard of Cedarville and Janet (Joe) Plaunt of North Muskegon, Michigan; one son, Robert A. (Sue Ann) Kay of Golden, Colorado; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Bobier of Bradenton, Florida and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Kay.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at the Ross Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church with Pastor David Letscher officiating.

His Final Resting Place will take place at Cedar cemetery in Cedarville.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church or Clark Township Ambulance Corp.

Wendell Maupin

Wendell William "Wendy" Maupin, age 74 of Kokomo, Indiana, went to be with the Lord at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital & Health Care Center in Kokomo, Indiana following a brief illness.

Wendell was born to Sallie Veta (Connor) Orr and Senica Orr in Albany, Kentucky, and at 3 months he was adopted by Wendell Carl and Bertha (Hoppe) Maupin. He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Jo (Wiebers) Maupin on August 28, 1948. She died on January 10, 1982. They had two sons, Mark William Maupin, and his wife Lori of Walton, Indiana and Michael Wendell Maupin and his wife Julie Maupin of Kokomo, Indiana. Wendell later married Reita (Turner) Heavilin Maupin of December 18, 1982 who is surviving. Her children are Lisa (Heavilin) Bell and husband Eddie Bell of Kokomo and Kent Heavilin and wife Traci of Kokomo, Indiana.

Also surviving are grandchildren Tressie and Maci Maupin; Joshua, Chelsea and David Maupin. Paul and Brant Byrd. One Aunt Freda (Hoppe) Smith of Kokomo, Indiana and special cousin Robert Orr and his wife Phyllis of Windfall, Indiana. Sisters and brothers-in-law Marjorie and Gene Fitch of Kokomo, Indiana; and Marvin and Becky Turner of Logansport, Indiana, and numerous other cousins are surviving.

Wendell graduated from Kokomo High School in 1946 where he excelled in basketball, football, and track. He went on to Manchester College where he graduated in 1950. He played basketball and football for Manchester receiving Most Valuable Player for football his senior year, Wendell was a member of the 1944 State Basketball Runner Up Team that lost to Evansville.

Wendell hitch hiked home on week ends from college to work at Continental Steel to help him pay for college. He didn't have enough money for books his freshman year so he borrowed from friends, and used the library. He later received his Master's degree from I.U. Bloomington in Driver Education in 1957.

His teaching career started at Sharpsville, teaching 5th grade and coaching high school basketball in 1951, then drafted the next year he taught from 1955 to 1963 at Central Junior High where he taught Health and Physical Education. Then Wendell taught at Lafayette Park School from 1961-1990, he also coached at both schools basketball, football, and track. He was one of the winningest coaches of Kokomo with a 70% wins and numerous city championships. Wendell said "It was those fine athletes that made him a winner." He also had worked at Haynes Stellite, Continental Steel and had caddied for the Kokomo Country Club.

Wendell was drafted in the 37th Army Corps of Engineers in September 1952-1954 getting his basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served in the Korean Conflict in Germany. He also played football and basketball for the Army while stationed in Germany.

He loved hunting and fishing at their cabin on Sugar Island near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He had owned there since 1964 almost as much as catching the "Big One" 53" sturgeon caught on Lake George. He loved retelling the fish stories and winning games. He loved it and lived it. He enjoyed watching all sports, either on TV or in person.

His memberships included First Presbyterian Church in Kokomo, Indiana, a 50 year member of Howard Masonic Lodge Member of the Loyal Order of Moose #179, Veteran of Foreign Wars #1152 and American Post 6 and Phi Delta Kappa.

Services are planned for Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 Alto Road, West Kokomo, Indiana, 46902 with Rev. Mark Deckinga.

Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Garden cemetery where military rites will be performed by VFW #1152 at the grave.

Calling will be from 3:00 p.m.--8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home.

Contributions can be made to Military Rites Squad of VFW Post #1152 (Envelopes available at the funeral home).

The services are under the direction of Jeff Stout of Stout & Son Funeral Home, a former student of Wendell Maupin.

Eleanor Donnelly Jacobs

Graveside services will be held for Eleanor Donnelly Jacobs at the Riverside cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2002. Father McWel will officiate.

Robert Saari

Robert William Saari, 81, of St. Ignace died on Monday morning, September 2 following a lingering illness.

He was born on January 5, 1921 in Laurium, Mich. His parents were John and Margaret (Saari) Sorenson. Bob served in the US Navy during WWII, aboard the USS Bullard, in the Asiatic Pacific battles, receiving six stars; and was a Gunners Mate and Electric Hydraulucs expert, First Class. He worked for the State of Michigan Highway Dept. as a bridge inspector many years, and after retirement, worked for Chippewa County as an inspector also. He retired in 1981 from the State and worked for Chippewa County for six years.

He is survived by two sons: Herbert James (Irena) Horner of Carson City, NV and Robert Thomas Horner of St. Ignace; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Donald) Hanna of Mesquite, NV; two sisters: Pauline Leppi of Detroit and Carol Lynch of Brighton; six grandchildren: Robert, Charles, Peggy, Edward, Aaron and Jonas; and one great-grandson, Tyler Charles.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Virginia Saari on January 8, 1974; two sisters, Kathy and Mildred; and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 9 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in St. Ignace, where he was a longtime member and usher. A Masonic service will be held before the memorial service, as Bob was a life member of The St. Ignace Lodge #369, F & A.M. Reverend James Balfour will officiate at the services. His cremains will be buried in Deepdale Memorial Park in Lansing, next to his wife, Beth.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace handled the arrangements.

Beverley Eberspacher

Beverley Eberspacher of Sugar Island passed away at War Memorial Hospital on Monday, November 11, 2002.

She was born in Flint, Mich. on February 16, 1936. Mrs. Eberspacher was a member of the Board of Directors of the Sugar Island Ambulance Association. She was also a member of the Blue Star Mothers. She loved being with her grandchildren and also loved Sugar Island as her home.

Preceding Mrs. Eberspacher in death is her daughter, Stacie K. Patten.

Beverley Eberspacher is survived by five sons: Rodney J. Riley of Kalkaska, Michael W. Patten of Sugar Island, Brian J. and Jack T. Patten of Kinross, and Daniel S. Coger of Gaylord. She is also survived by two daughters: Michelle R. Feigner of Rudyard, and Jackie Dunning of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Beverley has nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held.

Memorials may be left to the Sugar Island Ambulance Association.

Hovie Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

MARTIN, GERTRUDE E.

MARTIN, GERTRUDE E., 79, of Gwinn, Mich. and formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 in Gwinn, Mich. She was born on March 5, 1922. Arrangements will be announced at a later date by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.
