Mr. Fred A. Charboneau
Mr. Fred A. Charboneau, 60, loving husband and devoted father, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2000 at his home in Gaylord. Fred was born December 8, 1939 in Cheboygan. He was a prominent local businessman, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and past president of the Gaylord Booster Club. He is survived by his wife, Teresa, three sons; Randy (Rena) Charboneau of New York, Ryan (Margie) Charboneau of Gaylord, Rance (Julie) Charboneau of Macomb, five grandchildren; Ryan, Stephanie and Joel all of Gaylord, Randy and Helen of New York. He is also survived by his brothers; Jerry (Ruth) Charboneau of Farmington, Norman Charboneau of Cheboygan, Paul Charboneau of Cheboygan, his sister, Kay (Art) Laurance of Florida, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold & Ursula Charboneau and his brothers Leroy and Elden Charboneau. MEMORIAL SERVICES were held on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at 10:00 AM from the First United Methodist Church, Rev. John Naile, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hattie Mae Johnson
Mrs. Hattie Mae Johnson, 87 of Gaylord, died Friday, November 10, 2000 at Mercy Manor in Grayling. Mrs. Johnson was born to Roy & Nettie Small on August 13, 1913 in Mio and moved to Frederic in 1932. She soon met her husband-to-be, Carl Johnson, and the couple wed in 1940. Together, they owned AuSable Souvenir Works until 1958. In 1957 Carl and Hattie started the Underground Forest, which was later moved to Gaylord and renamed Call of the Wild. Mrs. Johnson is survived by 3 children; Bill (Bev) Johnson of Gaylord, Judy (Bruce) Fleet of Mancelona, Janis (Don) Vollmer of Gaylord, 11 grandchildren; Kellie (John) Puroll of Gaylord, Pam (Todd) Morgridge of Gaylord, Julie (Tom) Charbonneau of Gaylord, Diane (Terry) Bentgson of Cedar Springs, Bill (Joanie) Fleet of Mancelona, Kathy Morris of Sturgis, Tim (Pat) Fleet of Memphis, TN, Lori (Peter) Angel of Metamora, Morgan, Nick and Alex Vollmer all of Gaylord, 19 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 1 brother, Don Small of Gaylord, 2 sisters; Bessie Pratt of Flushing, and Edna Galbraith of Gaylord, 2 sisters-in-law; Eva (Roy) Papenfus of Grayling, Elida Bearss of Grayling, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Carl, in 1973. She was also preceded in death by 1 brother and 4 sisters. FUNERAL SERVICES were held on Monday, November 13, at 10:00 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Jerry Batterbee, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Frederic. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eden Alternative at Mercy Manor in Grayling, through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Mrs. Violet Ann Wolf
Mrs. Violet Ann Wolf, 96, formerly of Sparr (Gaylord), died Sunday, January 28, 2001, at the Hillman Nursing Center. Mrs. Wolf was born in Courtland, Ontario, Canada on October 15, 1904, and moved to Sparr (Gaylord) in the spring of 1923 from Canada. On December 3, 1923, at the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, she married William Wolf, Sr. Mrs. Wolf and her husband had owned the General Store in Sparr from 1925 until 1941. They had also owned a potato warehouse. Mrs. Wolf was a 35-year member of the Rebekah Lodge, O.E.S. Mrs. Wolf was preceded in death by her husband William Sr. on June 30, 1981. She was also preceded in death by 2 sons; William Jr. on September 5, 1984, and Lloyd on November 2, 1992; and 5 brothers and 4 sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Thomas of Alpena; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers; 4 sisters; and many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES were held on Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at 11:00 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Rev. John Naile, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Louise E. Estlund
Mrs. Louise E. Estlund, 73 of Gaylord died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Estlund was born in Marathon, Wisconsin on February 3, 1927, and moved to Gaylord in 1985 from Livonia. She received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Eastern Michigan University. Mrs. Estlund was a Home Economics teacher for 15 years at Southfield - Lathrup High School. She was a volunteer for RSVP. Mrs. Estlund is survived by her husband of 53 years, Douglas; her son Christopher (Linda) of Zion, Illinois; 2 grandsons, David & Michael; 1 brother, Harris (Mildred) Kuklinski of Appleton, WI; 1 sister, Viola (Merlin) of Fries Fremont, WI and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Dr. Ronald W. Kelly, DO
Dr. Ronald W. Kelley, DO, 55, of Gaylord died Thursday, January 18, 2001, at his home. Dr. Kelley was born in Flint on February 25, 1945, the son of William and Beulah Kelley. He was a 1963 graduate of St. John Vianney High School and a 1967 graduate of the University of Michigan. He received a Maters Degree in Microbiology from Michigan State University and went on to become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Kelley devoted his life to his practice in Gaylord for 25 years. He was a caring wonderful physician. Dr. Kelley is survived by his children: Mary "Molly" currently attending CMU in Mt. Pleasant; Cynthia Kelley - Jett (Charles) of Cheboygan currently attending NCMC in Petoskey; William of Cheboygan pursuing a technical degree, and 1 grandson, Alexander William Jett. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Mary Kelley, of Cheboygan; his mother, Beulah Kelley of Flint; 1 brother, Richard (Pat) of Castle Rock, WA; 3 sisters, Judy (John) Cragg of Flint, Sharon (Jaime) Irving - Infuentes of Fairfax, VA, Patti (Dan) Duby of Fenton, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William M. Kelley, in 1987. MEMORIAL SERVICES were held privately. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald Kelley Memorial Fund, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Joy Dee Mankowski
Mrs. Joy Dee Mankowski, 56 of Gaylord died Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mankowski was born in Almont, Michigan on June 9, 1944, and moved to Gaylord in 1951 from Oden. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Ralph Sr.; her children, Ralph Jr. (Trina) Mankowski of Gaylord, Sheyanne (Greg) Palmer of California, Fawn (Jody) Black of Vienna, MI, Kevin Mankowski of Gaylord, Cashena (Eric) House of Elmira, Brent (Deaneen) Mankowski of Gaylord, Kayne (Heather) Mankowski of Gaylord, Chantell Mankowski of Gaylord, Leon Mankowski of Gaylord; and 13 grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Verta Sutherland of Wisconsin; 2 brothers, Jerry Sutherland of Wisconsin and Cash (Amy) Sutherland of Gaylord; 1 sister, Frieda (Jim) Dowker of Wisconsin and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Cash Sutherland. FUNERAL SERVICES were held on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at 11:00 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Pastor David Hugger, officiating.

Raymond J. Winter
Raymone J. Winter, age 73 of Gaylord died Monday, January 15, 2001, at his home. Mr. Winter was born on January 7, 1928, in Detroit, MI. In 1961 he retired from the Udylite Corporation as an automation engineer. Upon his retirement he moved to his farm in Gaylord. He has been farming in Gaylord for 39 years. He married the former Theresa Matusik on Jan.26, 1952, in Richmond, Michigan. They would have been married 49 years. He was a member of the Parks and Recreation Board, the County Board of Commissioners, the Otsego County Ambulance Corp., the Soil Conservation Board, RC&D, and St. Mary's Cathedral Parish where he was an usher. Mr. Winter is survived by his wife Theresa, 2 nephews, Eric (Rosanna) of Texas and Gary (Barb) of Wyoming; 1 niece, Valerie (Will) of Wyoming; 2 great-nephews, Wilmer and Troy; and a sister-in-law Virginia. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dianne Elizabeth, on April 3, 1971, and his brother, Norbert on April 26, 1999. FUNERAL SERVICES were Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral, Fr. John McCracken officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Mary School, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mr. Wondell G. Smith
Mr. Wondell G. Smith, 82 of Gaylord died Saturday, January 13, 2001, at his home. Mr. Smith was born in Prichard, West Virginia on November 9, 1918, and moved to Michaywe' in 1975 from Romulus. He had served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of AmVets. Mr. Smith enjoyed woodworking. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen; 2 children, Charlotte (Bruce) Osborne of Canton and James Smith of Las Vegas, NV; 2 grandchildren, Shelly and Bruce Jr.; 5 great-grandchildren, Mark, Zachary, Jacob, Brianna, and Delaney; and 2 sisters, Geraldine Mallory of Livonia and Ouida Pontak of Southfield. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at 11:00 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Pastor Lou DiFilippantonio, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery in Johannesburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rosella Lee
Mrs. Rosella Lee, 88, of Gaylord peacefully passed away, Wednesday, January 10, 2001, at Tendercare. Mrs. Lee was born on Beaver Island, Michigan on November 28, 1912 and moved to Gaylord in 1940 from Boyne City. She retired from Standard Products after 30+ years of service. She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish and St. Mary Altar Rosary Society. Mrs. Lee is survived by 2 children; Louanne (Larry) Burd of Harrison and Robert (Loretta) Lee of Gaylord; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Rayne and 2 sons, Richard Grant and Bruce Eugene. FUNERAL SERVICES were held on Saturday, January 13, 2001, at 11:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. Garth Hilmer officiating. Burial will take place at Maple Lawn cemetery in Boyne City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lee family, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mr. William Lee Secord
Mr. William Lee Secord, 74 of Wolverine, died Monday, January 8, 2001, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Mr. Secord was born in Flint on June 24, 1926, and grew up in Wolverine. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served as Military Police in the South Philippines. After serving in the Army he moved from Wolverine to Southern Michigan. He was the owner of Lee Secord Heating & Cooling in Ann Arbor for 25 years. In 1987 he moved back to the Wolverine area. He took great pleasure in participating at the Senior Center in Wolverine. Mr. Secord is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elaine (Spencley) of Wolverine; 6 children, William Daniel Secord of Ypsilanti, Karen (Mike) Cooch of Ft. Myers, FL, Diane (Dan) Hamsher of Wolverine, Henry Lee Secord of Detroit, Teresa (Clyde) West of Taylor, Lisa (Tony) Secord - Gay of Dexter; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. He is also survived by 4 brothers, R.E. Secord of California, Dale Secord of Gladwin, Donald Secord of Flint, Eldon Secord of Wolverine; 4 sisters, Lorna Leslie of Charlevoix, Frieda Strow of Cheboygan, Joyce Mulville of Florida, Elda Lou Newkirk of Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Norvin Secord and his sister Weltha Jankoviak. MEMORIAL SERVICES were held Saturday, January 13, 2001, at 11:00 AM from the Wolverine Congregational United Church of Christ, Rev. LeRoy Sutfin, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wolverine Congregational Church or to the Wolverine Senior Center, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Helen M. Riegle
Mrs. Helen M. Riegle, 92, of Gaylord died Saturday, January 6, 2001. Mrs. Riegle was preceded in death by her husband Charles Riegle in 1981. She is survived by her son Tom (Robyn) Riegle and two grandchildren: Jason and Julie Riegle. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are appreciated to the American Lung Association through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ruth West
Mrs. Ruth West, 82, of Gaylord died Thursday, January 4, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Grayling. Mrs. West was born September 16, 1918, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a long time resident of Gaylord and a member of St. Mary Cathedral. She is survived by one sister, Martha Mittell of Clarkston, Michigan; one brother, Art (Madeline) Doyle of Ontario, Canada; step-children Bud (Linda) West of Creswell, Oregon and Sharon (Herb) Chelner of Chatsworth, California; and 3 step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband Henry Domber in 1961, and her second husband Howard West in 1986. Visitation was Monday 3-8 pm at the Nelson Funeral Home, Gaylord, MI. Committal prayers were Tuesday 1:00 pm at Holy Sepulchre cemetery, Southfield, MI.

Mr. Heinz R. Lackenbucher
Mr. Heinz R. Lackenbucher, 60, of Gaylord died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at his home. Mr. Lackenbucher was born in Vienna, Austria on August 12, 1940, and moved to Gaylord in 1984 from Arhus, Denmark. On July 31, 1967, in Gaylord he married the former Sandra Galbraith, who survives. Also surviving are his children Edgar and Christopher of Gaylord; 1 sister Lorli Andersen of Denmark; 2 nieces Ragnhild Eriksen of Denmark and Solvej Andersen of Denmark. FUNERAL SERVICES were held on Saturday, January 6, 2001, at 9:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Vanderbilt. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or to the Animal Tracks Building Fund through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Oralee M. Black
Mrs. Oralee M. Black 66, of Vanderbilt died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Black was born in Boyne Falls on March 16, 1934, and had lived most of her life in the Vanderbilt area. She loved taking care of her grandchildren and enjoyed bowling, crocheting and bingo. For many years she was a seamstress. In addition, she and her husband, Leroy, owned and operated Black's Gas Station. Mrs. Black is survived by her husband, Leroy; her children, Kenneth of Vanderbilt, Gayle (Dave Embree) Black of Vanderbilt, Lorena (Timothy) Lewis of Alpena, Don (Randi) of Vanderbilt; 4 grandchildren, DeVonna (Ernie) Lancaster, Nathan Embree, Haley Lewis and Logan Black; 4 brothers, Edward (Donna) Lick, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, Raymond (Sandra) Lick of Vanderbilt, Virgil (Beverly) Lick of Vanderbilt, Lindy (Dora, deceased) Lick of Fort Gay, West Virginia. She is also survived by 1 sister, Marj (Bill, deceased) Cunningham of Homosassa, FL; 1 aunt, Helen Lyons of Boyne Falls; 1 uncle, Karl "Cub" (Betty) Howard of Gaylord; many nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Ed Lick, Sr. & Beulah (Howard) Lick. FUNERAL SERVICES were held on Saturday, January 6, 2001, at 2:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Pastor Dave Hugger, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill cemetery in Vanderbilt. Mrs. Bertha Smith
Mrs. Bertha Smith, 79 of Gaylord died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at Crystal Manor in Grand Rapids. Mrs. Smith was born on August 25, 1921, in Gaylord and has been a life long resident. She attended St. Mary's School where she graduated. She married Alden Smith on Sept. 9, 1950. He had been the Bagley Twp. Clerk and she succeeded him for a short time. They together ran the Geigler Resort for many years. She was a mother, wife and grandmother. She enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and fishing. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Alden "AL" on March 23, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Sophia Borowiak, and brothers and sisters Edwin, Theodore, Judy and Louise. She is survived by 2 daughters, Susan (Michael) Long of Saline and Sally Smith (Jon Korb) of Cedar Springs; 5 grandchildren, Daniel, Lauren, Bill, Casey, and Kevin; 1 sister, Regina Milmine of Gaylord; and 1 brother, Alfred Borowiak of Gaylord. FUNERAL SERVICES were held on Thursday, January 4, 2001, at 11:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. Garth Hilmer, officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Vanderbilt.
