Mrs. Thelma Hopkins
Mrs. Thelma L. Hopkins, 76 of Johannesburg died Thursday, November 21, 2002. Mrs. Hopkins was born in Boyne Falls on July 19, 1926. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Gaylord and enjoyed crafts. Mrs. Hopkins is survived by her husband, James; her children, Joann Carper of Pontiac, Rosilee (Chuck) Toth of Gaylord, Keith (Sharon) Hopkins of Florida; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son James; 2 sisters, Phyllis Carson & Arlene Woodward; 1 brother Lloyd Martin. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, November 25, 2002 at 12:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5-8 PM and on Monday from 11 AM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Betty King
Betty King, Age 86 of Gaylord, died Tuesday, Nov. 12th at Tendercare of Gaylord. Mrs. King was born on Sept. 15, 1916 in McComb, Ohio. She had lived in the Gaylord area for over 45 years, and had owned Kings Cottages at Otsego Lake with her husband from the late 1950’s until 1993. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and doing crossword puzzles. She is survived by her 3 children: Robert (Katie) of North Carolina, Barbara, and Kenneth, both of Gaylord. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, Susan (Tony) Cope, and Steven King, both of North Carolina; one great-granddaughter McLain Cope. She was preceded in death by her husband Cloyce in 1993. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16th, at Otsego Lake Twp. cemetery in Gaylord, Rev. John Naile officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice through the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc.

Mr. Edwin Paul Mikolon
Mr. Edwin Paul Mikolon, 89 of Wilmot Township in Cheboygan County died Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Tendercare of Gaylord, Michigan. Edwin was born June 11, 1913 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the son of Andrew and Susan Mikolon. As a young man, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp for four years. With further urge to travel, he covered the states. Then he decided to venture to Alaska where he spent close to a year. After all the pleasure and varied experiences he lived trough while there, it certainly provided him with a great deal of conservation and story telling for his remaining years! With his wonderful memory, he never seemed to forget a single incident. Leaving Alaska, he arrived in Detroit to visit relatives. He then settled sown, found work, and eventually married the former Lillian Erat. They resided in Detroit for seven years. The urge to follow his heart’s desire, which was the love of hunting and the great outdoors; the decision was made to move north in 1948. After being employed in Vanderbilt for a period of time, he then found employment at Standard Products in Gaylord where he remained for twenty-six years until retirement. Edwin was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Erat Mikolon, and James Paul Mikolon in 1996, his great-grandson, Nathan Ray Theaker, and also his parents and seven brothers and one sister. Mr. Mikolon is survived by his wife, Lillian Ann; daughter, Beverly Ann (Rev. Orville) Theaker of Wolverine; son, Fred of Gagetown, MI; brother-in-law, Arthur (Violet) Erat, sister-in-law, Emma Erat; 9 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at 11:00 AM from Trinity Lutheran Church in Gaylord, Rev. Todd Brunworth and Rev. James Haenftling officiating. Burial will be in Silver Lake cemetery in Wolverine. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Monday from 3-8 PM. Visitation at the church will be on Tuesday beginning at 10 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church’s Debt Fund; or to the charity of your choice; through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Mr. Jeffrey Lee Northey
Mr. Jeffrey Lee Northey, 36 of Gaylord died Sunday, November 3, 2002. Jeff was born in Gaylord on January 23, 1966 and was raised in the Gaylord area. He later moved to Arizona where he graduated from high school. After returning to Gaylord he had worked at McDonalds for many years and was currently working for Big Buck Brewery & Steakhouse where he took special pride in his job. He enjoyed sports and traveling and especially loved family vacations. Jeff is survived by his father, Larry (Shirley) Northey of Owosso; his mother, Kay Northey of Glendale, Arizona; 3 brothers, Don of Alameda, CA, Keith (Candee) of Herndon, VA, Chris of Mount Vernon, IL; nephew, Eric Northey; aunts & uncles, James & Holly Donavan, Hugh Campbell, Ron & Verda Northey, Betty & Bob Hilliker; special family friend, Judy Doyen. MEMORIAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 1:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Rev. Gerald Rehagen, officiating. Interment will be at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Memorial Garden on Thursday November 14, 2002. Contributions in memory of Jeff Northey may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church for the beautification of the Memorial Garden, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilda M. Pruitt
Mrs. Wilda M. Pruitt, 83 of Vanderbilt died Friday, November 15, 2002 at McReynolds Hall. Mrs. Pruitt was born in Michigan on February 25, 1919 and had been a longtime resident of Otsego County. Mrs. Pruitt was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1984 and was also preceded in death by 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by her children, David Pruitt of Escanaba, Ronald (Charlene) Pruitt of Vanderbilt, Nancy (Gene) Gere of Gaylord, Barbara Damer of Gaylord; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Shirley Dvorak of Charlevoix. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday November 18, 2002 at 11 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Pastor Lou DiFilippantonio, officiating. Burial will be in Hayes Township cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Sunday from 5-8 PM and on Monday from 10 AM until the time of services.

Mr. Frank J. Skowronski
Mr. Frank J. Skowronski, age 84 of Gaylord died Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord. Mr. Skowronski was born in Gaylord on September 25, 1918, the son of Joseph and Bernice (Wysocki) Skowronski. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Heavy Equipment Operator. After the service he moved to Albany, California and worked in a grocery warehouse. He was also a Knights of Columbus member in California, and attended St. Augustine Church. He moved back to Gaylord three and a half years ago. He enjoyed fishing and traveling. He is survived by his niece and nephews, Richard Skowronski of Gaylord, Stanley Skowronski of Gaylord, Thaddeus “Ted” (Joan) Skowronski of Cadillac, Judy (John) Alaperet of Gaylord, Phyllis Forreider of Gaylord, Bernie Ryan of California, Jean Pokorski of California; sister-in-law, Agnes Skowronski of Gaylord. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Bernice Skowronski, his sisters Mary Ollic and Josephine Russell and his brothers Stanley Skowronski and Thomas Skowronski. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at 11:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 6-8 PM and on Saturday at the church beginning at 10 AM. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be offered Friday evening at 7 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Cathedral, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Elsie A. Wizinsky
Elsie A. Wizinsky, age 85 of Gaylord, formerly of Clawson, died Friday, November 15, 2002 at McReynolds Hall in Gaylord. She was born on July 18, 1917 in Detroit, MI., and lived most of her life in the Detroit area. On May 18, 1935, she married Jerome Weiss, and they began raising a family. After the death of her husband Elsie married Robert Wizinsky on June 1, 1951 and they continued raising their family. She had been a resident of Gaylord for the past 6 ½ years, and was an avid gardener, a homemaker, she enjoyed reading, and loved her family very much. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 18, 2002 at 11:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, the Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Sunday from 2-8 pm and on Monday at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. There will be a parish wake service on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm. Mrs. Wizinsky is survived by 4 children: Jim (Ann)Weiss of Troy, Mary Ellen (Ray) Dennis of Carmel, Indiana, Ann (Michael) Zipser of Northport, and Rob Wizinsky of Gaylord. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her husband Jerome Weiss, her husband Robert Wizinsky in 1997, her daughter Susan Weiss, her son Dennis Weiss and her sister Clara Swejkoski. Memorial contributions may be made to McReynolds Hall through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Mrs. Marie Bradley
Marie Bradley, 78 of Gaylord died Sunday, January 26, 2003 at Benson House in Johannesburg. Mrs. Bradley was born in Alberta, Canada on September 19, 1924 and had lived in Mesa, Arizona for 40+ years before moving to Gaylord in 1997. Mrs. Bradley was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Mesa. She enjoyed traveling and was a wonderful seamstress and floral designer. Mrs. Bradley was preceded in death by her husband George E. Bradley on February 4, 1977. She was also preceded in death by her mother Annie Komer in 1996, her daughter Judy Lynn Davis in 1998 and her brother Alex in 1983. She is survived by 2 grandchildren, Shane & Brandon Davison of Mesa, Arizona; 3 sisters, Nellie Legato of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Darlene Barnes of Hamilton, Ontario, and Pearl Peurach of Gaylord; 1 brother, Peter Gryff of British Columbia, Canada. Memorials services will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Gaylord, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Benson House, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. K. Leone Brown
K. Leone Brown, 76 of Gaylord died Wednesday, January 29, 2003 in Texas. Mrs. Brown was born March 13, 1926, the daughter of Harold C. & Irene M. (Milbocker) Bailey. She was a Registered Nurse and worked at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord as well as other health care facilities. She was active in the former Hospice of the North and the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed caring for senior citizens. Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, Rolland “Rod”; her children, Dennis (Christine) Alexander of Gaylord, Patrick (Shirley) Alexander of Gaylord, Michael (Helen) Alexander of Swartz Creek, Cheryl Brown of Flemington, MO, Bob (Cyndi) Brown of Webb City, MO, Barb (Kip) Granger of Gaylord, Dan (Elizabeth) Brown of Walker; 18 Grandchildren; 10 Great grandchildren; brothers & sisters, Thelma Holland of Grayling, Richard (Dorothy) Bailey of Farmington Hills, Rosemary (Carl) Gohm of Saginaw and Carol (Frank) Wilkinson of Gaylord; mother in law, Alice Brown of Gaylord. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 2:00 PM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 6-9 PM and on Saturday from 10 AM until prayers at 1:30 PM. A rosary will be offered Friday evening at 6:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Otsego Co. Commission on Aging.

Mrs. Lucing I. "Lou" Flynn
Mrs. Lucinda I. “Lou” Flynn, 93 of Gaylord died Sunday, February 2, 2003 at her home. Lucinda was born July 3, 1909 in Marlette, Michigan to Joseph and Neva Davies Hudson. She moved with her family to Detroit as a young girl and graduated from Northern High School. She met her future husband in 1928 and she and Glenn S. Flynn were married December 20, 1930 at Detroit Metropolitan Methodist Church by Dr. Merton S. Rice. They settled in Detroit and Oak Park, Michigan. During WWII Lucinda was an active member of the American Red Cross and drove trucks to Selfridge Field as part of the war effort. In 1955, she moved to Gaylord with her family and joined the First United Methodist Church. She was an active member for nearly 50 years— a member of the Hope Circle. Lucinda was employed by Otsego County as Deputy County Treasurer and retired from that position. Lucinda and her husband, Glenn “Dick” spent their retirement years enjoying extensive traveling around the country and spending winters in Weslaco, Texas and Leesburg, Florida. She and her husband were married nearly 57 years at the time of his death on December 14, 1987. Following her husband’s death, Lucinda remained active doing volunteer work and service through her church group and as a volunteer through the American Red Cross in assisting in blood drives. She remained independent, interested and involved in life into her 90’s. Lucinda is survived by her son, Larry (Cindy) Flynn of Harbor Springs; her daughter, Patricia L. Straney of Saginaw; 5 grandchildren, Melissa “Lisa” Straney of Clinton Township, Colleen Straney of Denver, CO, Eric (Alicia) Flynn of Gainesville, TX, Sara (Mike) Rostar of Charlevoix, and Leah Flynn of Harbor Springs; 2 great-grandchildren, Gavin Rostar and Lauren Flynn. A brother, E.J. Hudson, of Dayton, OH, also survives her. Lucinda was predeceased in death by her beloved husband, Judge G.S. “Dick” Flynn, and her sister, Ruth (Carl) Samuelson of Detroit. Lucinda leaves to cherish her memory her family and many friends. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at 1 PM from the First United Methodist Church, Rev. John Naile, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home was held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM and will be held on Wednesday at the church beginning at 12 Noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mary Ann Gerdeman
Mary Ann Gerdeman, 58 of Gaylord died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Gerdeman was born in Lansing on November 26, 1944. She was raised in Lansing and was a 1962 graduate of Lansing Sexton High School. After traveling for several years, she settled in Gaylord in the late 1960’s. She had worked for the Gaylord Community Schools for 23 years. She enjoyed reading and gardening and especially loved playing with and “spoiling" her granddaughter. On June 15, 1984 in Gaylord, she married Ken Gerdeman, who survives. She is also survived by her children, Brett (Alicia) McVannel of Johannesburg, Brian McVannel of Alpena, Allison (Chris) Carter of Louisiana; her grandchildren, Haley, Jordan and Jace; her parents, Harry & Chris Hardenberg of Lansing; her sister, Judy Krchmar of Texas. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at 1:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Matt Kinsinger, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 11 AM – 1 PM & 4-8 PM and on Saturday from 12:00 PM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Ms. Julianne Y. Johnson
Julianne Y. Johnson, 20 of Gaylord died Friday, January 17, 2003. Julie was born and raised in Gaylord. She graduated from Gaylord High School in 2001 and was pursuing a Cosmetology degree from Kirtland Community College. Julie was active in gymnastics and was proud of her gymnastic awards earned in the Silver Championship Category. She loved animals. While in school she was a cheerleader and played basketball. She also loved the water and enjoyed jet skiing and boating. Julie was employed by S&K and Mooneys in Gaylord as an Assistant Manager. She is survived by her parents, Steve and Debbie of Gaylord; brother, Joshua (Samantha) of Gaylord; nephew, Dakota Johnson of Gaylord; paternal grandparents, Dale and Beverly Johnson of Gaylord; maternal grandparents, Betty and Leo Liddy of Gaylord, and James Lynch of Gaylord; great grandfather, Hubert Pierce of Tawas City; aunts and uncles (all of Gaylord), Kevin (Darce) Johnson, Kris Neil, Michelle Lynch, Jamie Lynch; many cousins, great aunts and great uncles. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, January 20, 2003 at 1PM from the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church, Rev. James Mathis officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Sunday from 2-8 PM and at the church on Monday beginning at 12 noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Julianne Johnson Memorial Fund for Friends for Life, Boyne City Gymnastics or Spring Hill Camp, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mr. Anthony V. “Tony” Myszkier
Anthony V. “Tony” Myszkier, 86 of Gaylord died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at his home. Mr. Myszkier was born in Detroit on April 5, 1916 and moved to Gaylord in 1946 after purchasing a farm. He also worked at Standard Products in Gaylord. Mr. Myszkier was a member of the VFW Clyde Wilkes Post, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a devoted member of St. Mary Cathedral parish. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 11:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken and Rev. Garth Hilmer, concelebrating. Burial will take place in the spring at Hetherton cemetery near Johannesburg. Mr. Myszkier was preceded in death by his wife Johanna on March 9, 1999. He is survived by four children, Ruthann (Dan) Galbraith of DeWitt, MI, Roger (Cathy) Myszkier of Gaylord, Wanda (Gary) Averill of Sacramento, CA, Ranell (Dennis) Murphy of Houghton Lake; four grandchildren, General, Michelle, Tiffiany and Abigale; four great grandchildren, Madison, Justin, Andrew & Daniel; one brother, Arnold Myszkier, two sisters, Joan Lybeer & Janice Myszkier. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Thursday from 6-8 PM, Friday from 1-8 PM and on Saturday from 9:30 AM until prayers at 10:30 AM A parish rosary will be held Friday evening at 6 PM followed by a VFW & DAV memorial service at 6:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the school Sisters of Notre Dame, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Emma A. Pierce
Emma A. Pierce 96 of Tawas City died Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at her home. Mrs. Pierce was born in Detroit on October 2, 1906 and was raised in the Detroit area. During the war she worked for Chris Craft Boats. After her marriage to Harold Seibert the couple moved to Algonac where they raised their daughter, Beverly. In 1948 the family moved to Gaylord. While living in Gaylord the Seibert’s ran a fruit market located on Old 27 South near Emil’s Sausage Kitchen. Mr. Seibert preceded his wife in death on June 4, 1976. In 1978 Emma married Hubert Pierce and has lived in Tawas City since. Mrs. Pierce was very active in the Tawas City Seventh Day Adventist Church. She is survived by her husband, Hubert of Tawas City; daughters, Beverly (Dale) Johnson of Gaylord, Connie (Alfred) Day of Fairgrove; grandchildren, Steve (Debbie) Johnson and Kevin (Darce) Johnson all of Gaylord, Karen Hawthorn and Roland Day; great grandchildren, Joshua, Julie, Jada, and Madison Johnson, Katie and Jackson Day; 1 great great grandchild, Dakota Johnson; 1 sister, Edna Schanz of Chelsea. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Friday, January 10, 2003 at 12:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Pastor Richard Mendoza and Pastor James Danforth officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord will be held on Thursday from 2:30 - 8 PM and on Friday from 11 AM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tawas Seventh Day Adventist Church, through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.
