Leona Woody

Leona E. Woody of Engadine helped her husband operate their dairy farm, and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine. Mrs. Woody died at age 90 Saturday evening, September 15, 2007, at the Luce County Annex long term care facility in Newberry.

She was born in Detroit November 5, 1916, the eldest daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (nee Brockman) Feigel. She moved to Engadine as a young child.

She married Burgess "Eugene" Woody, and they operated the dairy farm while he worked as a woodsman for Hiawatha Sportsman's Club on the west end of Mackinac County.

After he was injured and could no longer work on the farm, they sold the farm and Mrs. Woody became a full-time homemaker and caregiver for her husband.

Mrs. Woody enjoyed crocheting, vegetable gardening, and flower gardening.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sue Woody of Goldsboro, North Carolina; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her youngest brother and his family, Robert and Shirley Feigel of Engadine, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers, and five sisters.

Friends may call at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine Thursday, September 20, from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

A funeral at Bethlehem Lutheran Church will follow visitation at 10 a.m.

Pastor Art Bode will officiate.

Interment will follow at the Engadine cemetery.

Beaulieu Funeral Home of Newberry assisted the family with arrangements.

Mildred Klepack

Mildred Klepack, 91, of St. Ignace, formerly of Royal Oak, passed away Thursday, September 13, 2007.

She married her childhood sweetheart, John Klepack. They were married 53 years.

She is survived by a daughter and her family, Kathryn Mizzi; grandchildren and their families, Lisa and Kent Olson, Anthony Mizzi, Angela Mizzi-Smith, Sarah and Cody Mackity, and Matthew Klepack, and her great-grandchildren, Tarya and Thomas Olson, Damien and Jacob Mackity, and Raphaella Rose Klepack.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Lawrence Klepack.

A memorial service was held Monday, September 17, at Pine Hill Congregational Church in West Bloomfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mackinac Straits Hospital Building Fund.

Elton Black and Son Funeral Home of White Lake assisted the family with arrangements.

Arthur Hopperstead

Arthur Bensen Hopperstead, 82, of the Verona/Pittsburgh area in Pennsylvania, died August 30, 2007.

He was born in St. Ignace November 1, 1924, to Arnold M. Hopperstead and Bertha (nee Bensen) Hopperstead, with his birth announced on the front page of the St. Ignace newspaper, before he was named.

He lived on Portage Street before the family moved to Crystal Falls, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and then Alpena.

He was a World War II veteran.

Mr. Hopperstead was a retired vice president of Trumbull Corporation, a member of Plum Creek Masonic Lodge 799 F&AM, Syria Shrine, the Elks, and the American Legion.

Mr. Hopperstead was president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers and Past Elder and Trustee of the Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek.

He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy E. Hopperstead, his children and their families, Diane and Paul Slimick, and Andrea, Alan, and Eric Hopperstead.

He was a grandfather of four grandsons and one granddaughter.

Mr. Hopperstead is survived by two sisters and their families, Helen Wynns of Exeter, Missouri, and Carilon and James Carr of Grand Rapids.

Burial was in Plum Creek cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek, 550 Center-New Texas Road, Plum, Pennsylvania 15239.

Vernon Michalke

Vernon P. Michalke, 85, of Clinton Township, died Thursday, September 6, 2007.

Mr. Michalke was born in 1922 on Mackinac Island. He moved to Detroit and was graduated from Annunciation High School.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Michalke attended University of Detroit.

He enjoyed many hobbies, including golf, photography, literature, his cottage in Lexington, and mastering the challenge of flying airplanes. He served as an usher for many years at St. Thecla Catholic Church in Clinton Township. He also served with the Civil Air Patrol at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. His devotion to family and church meant a great deal to him, relatives said, and his most endearing qualities included his intelligence and droll sense of humor.

Mr. Michalke is survived by his wife, Doris (nee Wiseman) of 60 years; his children and their families, Eric Michalke, Anne and Greg Cazara, Carol and David Neirynck, John and Toni Michalke, Janice and Kurt Scherer, and Mary and John Maranzano; 16 grandchildren and their families; three great-grandchildren, and a nephew and his family, Paul and Jo-Ann Michalke.

He was predeceased by his brother, Francis Michalke.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, September 17, at St. Thecla Catholic Church in Clinton Township.

Interment will be in Clinton Grove cemetery.

Grant Simmons

Grant Simmons, 76, of St. Ignace, a retired Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force, died Friday, September 14, 2007, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care in St. Ignace.

Mr. Simmons was born in St. Ignace June 3, 1931 to Grant and Stella (nee Spaulding) Simmons.

He was graduated from LaSalle High School in 1950, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1971, with service in Kincheloe, Thailand, Puerto Rico, Paris, France, Vanderburg, California, and he retired in Alabama. He was a Vietnam Veteran, and a life member of the St. Ignace VFW.

He married Jane Horn in St. Ignace February 12, 1955.

Mr. Simmons worked at the Correctional Facility in Kinross, and retired in 1993.

Mr. Simmons loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hunting was his passion, friends said, at his cabin, "Nine Oaks," named after the nine members of the family. He attended many St. Ignace football and basketball games. Mr. and Mrs. Simmons spent several winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife, six children and their families, Janet Gamble, Rebecca and Mario Calcaterra III, Grant Jr. and Kelly Simmons, all of St. Ignace, Allison Simmons of Kincheloe, Tyling and Matt Mokanyk of Traverse City, Charlie and Bonnie Gamble of Ashville, North Carolina; 18 grandchildren and their families, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Kimberlain "Dee Dee" Simmons.

Services were held Monday, September 17, at Dodson Funeral Home with Fr. Jim Williams officiating. Burial will be on Mackinac Island with military honors.

Pallbearers were Grant Simmons Jr., Charlie Gamble, Matt Mokanyk, Mario Calcaterra III, Larry Belonga, and Dick Czapek.

Lucy Bradley

Lucy Irene (nee Booth) Bradley of Hulbert Lake was a 20- year teacher at Tahquamenon Area Schools in Newberry, where she was employed from 1965 through 1985. Following her retirement, she continued to tutor students in Newberry and around the Hulbert Lake community, and briefly at a school in Jamaica until February 2007, when her health began to fail. Mrs. Bradley was 87 when she died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at her home, following an extended illness.

She was born in Gladwin July 28, 1920, to Susan (nee Ferrell) and Herbert Booth, and was one of three children, including the late James Booth and Jesse Elizabeth Becker of Gladwin.

She was graduated as the salutatorian from Gladwin High School in 1938. She earned an education degree from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant in 1942, and took a position at Reed City High School.

During World War II, she served the United States by working as a civilian code breaker in Washington, D.C.

Following her war time service, she married Dr. F.K. "Ken" Bradley June 11, 1946, and they had five children. They lived in Midland for nine years before relocating to the Upper Peninsula and Newberry in 1955. They continued to spend summers with their family at a cabin on Hulbert Lake.

Mrs. Bradley loved reading books, and frequently quoted what she read. She loved working in her "wilderness" garden as well, named for the sense of wild isolation she felt living in the Upper Peninsula. For a time after the 1981 construction of her new home near the family cabin in Hulbert, she was the only yeararound resident on Hulbert Lake.

Mrs. Bradley was a member of the executive board of the Hulbert Lake Club, a Village of Newberry trustee, a member of the Tahquamenon Area Teachers' Association, treasurer of the Tahquamenon Area Retired School Personnel Association, a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, and a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church Parish in Newberry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, in 1973; her parents; her brother, and a favorite aunt, Irene Elthorp of Gladwin.

In addition to her sister, Beth; she is survived by five children and their families, James and Karen Bradley of Ontonagon, Timothy and Ann Bradley of Rudyard, Beth and Larry Bennett of Mt. Pleasant, Dennis and Marilyn Bradley of Portage, Wisconsin, and B.G. and Debbie Bradley of Diorite; 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Friends can call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry Thursday, May 15, from noon to 2 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Father Paul Karottekunnel will officiate. Rite of Committal will follow at the Forest Home cemetery near Newberry.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to North Woods Hospice, Beacon House of Marquette, or one's favorite charity.

Veronica Massaway

Veronica Massaway of Simmons Road in St. Ignace Township was a former Mackinac Island resident who worked at the Lakeview Hotel and Island House on Mackinac Island, and at Kewadin Casino in St. Ignace. For 25 years, she was the executive housekeeper at the Lakeview, working for Harry Ryba and Ira Green. She was the supervisory housekeeper at Kewadin Casino. She was known as a gracious lady, friends said, who always had a smile, was kind, and loved her family. Mrs. Massaway died at age 72 Saturday, May 10, 2008, at her home, following a lingering illness.

She was born on Mackinac Island June 4, 1935, to Cecilia (nee Perault) and Frank Cadotte, and she attended school there. Her family lived on the island until July 1965.

Mrs. Massaway was a Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Elder.

She married John Massaway November 6, 1954, and he survives her.

She is also survived by six sons and their families, John Jr. and Linda of St. Ignace, Frank of St. Ignace, Paul and Marion of St. Ignace, Joe and Denise of Essexville, Robert and Petina of St. Ignace, and Nicholas of St. Ignace; a daughter, Theresa St. Andrew of St. Ignace; one brother and his family, Nicholas "Bing" and Delores of Caro; three sisters, Lucille Visnaw, Theresa Howell, and Frances Bazinaw, all of St. Ignace; 16 grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by three nieces she and Mr. Massaway helped rear, including Marie Hutchins, Rose Good, and Rose Kerr.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona Keyser and Mary Andress; a brother-in-law, Joseph Howell; a son-in-law, LeRoy St. Andrew, and a grandson, John Massaway III.

A Native American service, visitation, and a prayer service took place Monday, May 12, at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace. Deacon Don Olmstead officiated the service.

Kim Parish

Kim Aletha Parish, 46, of Brimley, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at her home.

She was born October 29, 1961, in Sault Ste. Marie to John and Lorraine (nee Keelean) Mills.

Mrs. Parish enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, and camping. She was always helping someone, friends said, and she especially enjoyed spending time with and caring for the elderly.

She was a wonderful hostess, family members said, and her famous fish fry will be missed.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis Parish; three children, Shawn Shuman, John Shuman, and Stephanie Shuman; Julie Timmer; Jenifer Parish; her parents; seven siblings and their families, Cynthia and Hugh Clarke, Karen and Justin Carrick, Lucy and Dan Pavlat, Melanie and Jack Hambidge, Greg and Stacey Mills, Brian and Sherry Mills, Kevin and Becky Mills; three sisters-in-law and their families, Louella and Gene Raymond, Shirley and Don Kincheloe, and Dawn Parish; four brothers-in-law, L. John Lufkins, Philip Parish, Clinton Parish, Gordon Parish; grandchildren, Logan and Audra; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, William and Lola Keelean, John, Mamie, and Leona Mills; niece Monica Clarke; fatherin law Clayton "Bud" Parish; mother-in-law Leila Parish; and brother-in-law Alan Parish.

Visitation was held Monday, May 5, at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Brimley.

The funeral was Tuesday, May 6, at 11 a.m., at the church with Father Ted Brodeur as celebrant.
