Charlotte Kabe

Charlotte Kabe, 80, of Windom died Oct. 24, 2001, at Good Samaritan Home in Mt. Lake.
Services were held Friday at American Lutheran Church in Windom with Rev. Stephen Norby officiating.
Special music was provided by Rev. Norby, soloist; and Carol Vought, organist.

Pallbearers were Paul Voth Jr., Thomas Voth, David Voth, Aaron Voth, Kevin Treanor and Alan Lindell.
Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Blue Earth with Rev. Steve Bohling of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.
Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Charlotte Marie Williams was born Sept. 4, 1921, to John and Elizabeth (Martin) Williams in Blue Earth. She received her education in Blue Earth schools.
In 1938, she married Paul Stenberg and they became the parents of a son, Paul Jr. Just six years after their marriage, Paul Sr., died.

In 1944, Charlotte married Henry Voth and became the parents of two sons, James and Richard. Henry died in 1968.
In 1970, she married Albert Kabe in Windom. The couple made their home in Blue Earth. For 27 years, Charlotte was an employee of the J.C. Penny store in Blue Earth, where she worked as a clerk until the store closed in 1987.

After Albert died in 1991, Charlotte moved to Windom. She became a resident at Good Samaritan Home in Mt. Lake just a few days before her death.
Charlotte loved many types of animals and cared for a dog and cat in her home. She also enjoyed cooking and watching TV.

In addition to her husbands, Charlotte was preceded in death by a brother, Elroy Oelke, and two sisters, Madeline Grapevine and Betty Porter.

Survivors include her three sons, Paul (Deanna) Voth of Windom, James (Barbara) Voth of New Ulm, and Richard Voth of Louisville, Ky.; step-children, Gloria (Alan) Lindell of Ceylon, Jerry (Evelyn) Kabe of Blue Earth, and Greg (Kathy) Kabe of Bloomington, Ind.; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Mildred Roesner

Mildred “Millie” Roesner, 85, of Jackson, died Oct. 14, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in Jackson.
Services were held Oct. 18 at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson with Rev. Michael McCallum officiating.
Special music was provided by Eleanor Hutchinson, organist; and LeRoy Peterson, organist.

Pallbearers were Jim Aden, Bob Schmoll, David Roesner, Roger Voss, Arlo Bretzman and LeWellyn Ahrens.
Special honorary pallbearer was George Chergosky. Honorary pallbearers also included Millie’s nieces and nephews.
Interment was at Sioux Valley Cemetery in Sioux Valley Township of Jackson County.
Sathe-Osterberg Funeral Home of Jackson was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mildred Schmoll was born April 13, 1916, to August and Theresia (Sangl) Schmoll in Round Lake Township of Jackson County. She attended Round Lake country school and Sioux Valley School before graduating from Lakefield High School in 1933.

In 1936, she married Rudolph Roesner at the Lakefield Methodist Manse. They lived south of Jackson in Des Moines Township for 11 years before moving near the Des Moines River for the next 26 years.
In 1973, they moved near Clear Lake.

Millie was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, where she was involved in its Ladies Aid.
Millie also enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, often sharing her flowers with the Jackson Good Samaritan Center.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Schmoll and Leonard Schmoll.

Survivors include her husband, Rudolph “Speed” Roesner of Jackson; and two sisters-in-law, Grace Schmoll of Hutchinson and Gladys Schmoll of Windom.

Lowell Pankonin

Lowell Pankonin, 76, of Brook Park, formerly of the Jeffers, Windom and Heron Lake areas, died Oct. 28, 2001, at his home in Brook Park.
Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m., at Hansen’s North Pine Funeral Home in Sandstone with Rev. Tom Aubrey officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kermit Pankonin, Harold Pankonin, Willard Pankonin, Roger Fitzhenry, Richard Oltman, Charles Steigen.
Hansen’s North Pine Funeral Home of Sandstone is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Lowell Luverne Pankonin was born April 8, 1925, to Frederick and Ida (Bell) Pankonin in Jeffers. He grew up and attended school in the Jeffers and Windom area.
In 1947, Lowell married Madonna Balling in Heron Lake. Lowell worked in the auto salvage business and farmed near Heron Lake for about 10 years. He also served as the community’s chief of police during that time.

In 1971, Lowell and his family moved to Brook Park. He operated Standard Oil stations in Brook Park and Mora and also operated the Braham Tap bar for 18 years.
After retiring in 1997, Lowell cared for his cattle and enjoyed flower gardening and yard work.

An avid hunter and ice fisherman, he especially enjoyed wearing wildly colorful clothing.
Lowell was preceded in death by a granddaughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Madonna of Brook Park; two sons, Roger (Phyllis) Pankonin of Brook Park and Dennis (Linda) Pankonin of Mora; two daughters, Eileen (Duane) Carolson of Cambridge and Peggy Lee Avila of Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kermit Pankonin of Windom, Harold Pankonin of Clarissa and Willard Pankonin of Gautier, Miss.; and two sisters, Donna Schultz of Minneapolis and Doris Bertzyk of St. Paul.

Mabel Knutson

Mabel Knutson, 87, of Aitkin, formerly of Windom, died Oct. 30, 2001, at Riverwood Extended Care Center in Aitkin.
A memorial service was held Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. Lance Issacson officiating.

Interment was at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery near Spicer.
Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Mabel Marie Peterson was born Dec. 3, 1913, to John and Ella (Chrillisen) Peterson near Spicer. She attended rural school, graduating from the eighth grade at Ringo Lake. She attended Red Wing High School before graduating from Willmar High School in 1931.

Mabel attended Willmar Teachers Training and St. Cloud Teachers Training, then taught in a rural school setting in Kandiyohi County for several years.
In 1941, she became the extension agent and a 4-H leader in Yellow Medicine County.

Also in 1941, Mabel married Lloyd Knutson at Bethany Lutheran Church on Long Lake near Spicer. The couple lived in Minnesota most of their married life, including the past 25 years in Aitkin.

While in Aitkin, Mabel was involved in the community and First Lutheran Church. She was a quilter at First Lutheran, involved in the circle and served as treasurer of Lutheran Church Women. She also served as a Sunday School teacher, Women’s Federation chair, and was a leader for both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Earlier in her married life, she was mother not only to her four children, but the four children of relatives, who were hospitalized with polio.

During that seven-month period from 1954 to 1955, the Literary Club of Windom named her Woman of the Year for 1955. WCCO and the Minneapolis Tribune also recognized her as Mother of the Year. While in Windom, she also led several UNICEF Halloween parties and fund drives.
Mabel also worked for the Kinney Shoe Store in Columbia Heights for 12 years.

Mabel was preceded in death by a sister, Lillie Holmgren; three brothers, Elmer, Walter and Raymond Peterson; a granddaughter and a nephew.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Knutson of Aitkin; four children, Lanny (LeeAnn) Knutson of Erickson, Manitoba, Canada; Ilona (Larry) Juergensen of Sun City, Ariz.; Galen (Donna Erickson) Knutson of Burnsville; and Twyla (Gary) Knutson of Olathe, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Miller of Minneapolis; and a brother, Melvin Peterson of Hillman.

Ruth Lillemoen

Ruth Lillemoen, 87, of Wendell, formerly of Windom, died Oct. 30, 2001, at Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls.
Services were held Saturday at Rock Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Elbow Lake, with Rev. Dan Cole officiating.
Interment was at the church cemetery.

The Glende-Johnson-Nelson & Nilson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Ruth VanGerpen was born June 24, 1914, to William and Jessie VanGerpen on a farm near Avon, S.D. As a youngster, Ruth and her family moved to the Windom area. She received her education in South Dakota and Minnesota schools.

In 1950, she moved to Oakland, Calif., where she worked for several years as a stock control clerk for the Glen Godman Co.

In 1954, she married Russell Lillemoen. The couple made their home in Burlingame, Calif., for the next 26 years.
After retiring, Ruth and Russell returned to Minnesota, making their home in Wendell.

While in California, they were members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Burlingame, charter members of the Sons of Norway Lodge in San Mateo, Calif., and members of Guide Dogs of the Blind in San Rafael, Calif.
In Minnesota, Ruth was a member of Rock Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Elbow Lake, and its Ladies Aid Society.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Fred and William Jr.; and four sisters, Lillian Dikkers, Eleanor Junker, Leona Holt and Gladys Wulf.

Survivors include her husband, Russell of Wendell; her step-son, Roger (Ellen) Lillemoen; her adopted son, Kenneth Lillemoen; her foster son, Bruce (Donna) Balsan; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Dorothy Flaskegaard of Sheldon, Iowa and Mesa, Ariz.; Grace Hagerman of Bellingham, Wash.; and Esther Junker of Windom.

Silas Bartsch

Silas Bartsch, 75, of Reedley, Calif., formerly of Delft, died Oct. 18, 2001, at his home in Reedley.
A memorial service was held Oct. 23 at Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church.

Officiating at the service were Rev. Dennis Fast, Rev. Tyler Daniels, Rev. Bob Plett and Rev. Melvin Harrel.
Offering tributes were Russell York, a life-long friend; Dr. Peter Mehas, a friend and colleague at the Fresno County Office of Education; Dr. Dalton Reimer, friend and colleague at Fresno Pacific University; and Rev. G.L. Johnson, pastor at People’s Church of Fresno.

Special music was provided by Mary Jane Lepp, organist.
Silas Palmer Bartsch was born May 13, 1926, in Mt. Lake. He grew up on a farm in Delft before moving with his family to Reedley, Calif., where he worked with his father producing fruit, cotton, grain and cattle near Reedley.

After graduating from high school, “Si” enlisted inthe U.S. Army in 1945, serving two years, then returning to Reedley.
Si graduated from Reedley College in 1949, and attended Fresno State and San Jose State before graduating from Chapman College in Los Angeles in 1951, majoring in history and education. He also had one year of post-graduate study at Berkeley Baptist Divinity School.

He began his teaching career in 1952, teaching fourth grade at Washington School in Reedley.
In 1953, Si married Nadine Doyel. The couple made their home near Reedley.

Si began teaching at General Grant Junior High School in Reedley in 1955 and then served as principal of the school and superintendent of the Reedley Elementary School District. He also served as superintendent at Kings Canyon Unified School District.

In 1970, Si joined the faculty at Fresno Pacific College, serving in a variety of capacities, including sociology and education teacher. He also served one term as interim college president and helped develop the school’s graduate program.

From 1970 to 1994, he also served on the Fresno County Board of Education, including several terms as chairman.
In 1990, he retired from his role as Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Fresno Pacific.

In addition to his career in education, Si also was involved in helping establish the Fresno Christian Education System. He also served in a variety of church capacities with Reedley Full Gospel Tabernacle Church, of which he was a member for 61 years.

He also served on a number of community boards and organizations, many as their chairman.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine of Reedley; a son, Doug (Susie) Bartsch; a daughter, Kris (Tim) Lockwood; four grandchildren; brothers, Pete Bartsch and Abe Bartsch; and sisters, Pauline Duerksen, Sophie Bartsch, Susie Kornelson, Jenny Mitchell and Martha Romsdahl.

Lowell Neil

Lowell Neil, 65, of Brainerd died Oct. 28, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter with Rev. Darrell Pedersen officiating.

Interment was at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Nelson-Doran Funeral Home of Brainerd is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Lowell T. Neil was born July 21, 1936, to Ralph and Esther (Longshore) Neil in Milford, Iowa.
Lowell had been part-owner of North Country Real Estate and was sales manager for Sports Craft.

He was a member of Lord of Life Church in Baxter.
Survivors include his wife, Sara, of Brainerd; a son, Patrick (Judy) Neil of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Melanie (Tom) Rietveld of Bemidji and Michele Neil of Tulsa, Okla.; and two grandchildren.
