Minnie Sperl, 88, of rural Comfrey died Jan. 23, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Services were held Friday, Jan. 26 at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye with Chaplain Mary Pauluk officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Minnie was born on Aug. 8, 1912, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the daughter of Harry F. and Mary (Nowak) Cook. She grew up and attended District 42 country school in Brown County. Minnie married Bernard "Ben" F. Sperl on Nov. 2, 1931, at the St. Mary's Church rectory in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Mulligan Township, where they lived and farmed for many years. Minnie also worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye for a few years. Her husband Ben preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1974. Minnie continued to live on the farm with her sister until moving to St. John Home in Feb. of 2000. Minnie enjoyed farming, working outdoors, gardening, making hay and working with livestock. She also enjoyed fishing with her husband, Western Minnie baseball games, car racing and going to Fairs.
Minnie is survived by her sister, Arlene Cook of rural Comfrey; sisters-in-law, Lillian Strate and Rose Gulbrandson, both of Sleepy Eye; cousins, Donald "Duke" Cook, and Mel and wife Marie Cook, all of rural Comfrey, Ivona Helget of New Ulm, Leon Schwartz of Summit, S.D., and Bertha Green of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Casket bearers were Leon Tauer, Linus Tauer, Howard Tauer, Donald Cook, Paul Schroepfer and Jerome Trebesch. Honorary casket bearers were Florence Metzen, Jim Gulbrandson, Roberta Radtke, Jerome Huiras, Carol Fischer, Mary Jane Williams and Mel Cook.
Agnes Katherine Weber, 90, of Springfield, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Springfield Medical Center in Springfield. Services were held Saturday, Feb. 3, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with interment in St. Raphael's Cemetery, Springfield.
Agnes was born August 16, 1910, in Bashaw Township near Comfrey, to Andrew and Margaret (Kreitinger) Lang. She married Joseph August Weber on May 31, 1949, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. They farmed in Brookville Township, north of Springfield, where Agnes resided until her death. Agnes was active in a garden study club and St. Anne's Altar Society (C.C.W.). For many years she arranged wonderful bouquets of flowers from her garden for occasions in the church. She was also an avid seamstress and made her own wedding dress, as well as everything from curtains for her home to Barbie doll clothes for her grandchildren. Agnes also helped to make quilts in her church basement and continued to crochet beautiful afghans until late in life when her vision deteriorated.
Agnes is survived by her son, David Weber of rural Springfield; daughter, Diane Jacobsen of White City, Oregon; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters, Leona Meidl and Cleopha Weiss both of Sleepy Eye, and Margaret Zenk of Olivia; sisters-in-law, Beatrice (Steffensmeier) Weber, Delores (Weiss) Ebnet and Kathleen (Roeser) Lang, all of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; an infant son; sisters, Rose and Lydia; and brothers, Andrew, Edwin, Art, and Roman.
Casket bearers were Gerald Weber, Cletus Utz, Bob Weiss, Karen Weber, Ralph Weber and Mary Jo Veenstra.
Matthew Fromm, son of Dennis and Sharon Fromm, was stillborn on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at the New Ulm Medical Center. Private family funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Sturm Funeral Home, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Matthew is survived by his parents, Dennis and Sharon (Mathiowetz) Fromm of Sleepy Eye; grandparents, Denis Mathiowetz, Rosemary Mathiowetz, and Ed and Kathy Fromm, all of Sleepy Eye; great--grandparents, Tom and Mary Mathiowetz and Agnes Fromm of Sleepy Eye, and Margaret Fischer of Mankato. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Elsa "Lisa" Lim King, 38, of Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, near Morgan, as a result of a traffic accident. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the Divine Providence Community Home chapel with interment in Ozamiz City, Phillipines. Arrangements were handled by the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.
Elsa was born on Dec. 30, 1962, in Ozamiz City, Phillipines, the daughter of Kiang Lian Kee and Germana Lim Kiang. She grew up in Ozamiz City where she graduated from high school. She attended the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, where she graduated in 1983 with a bachelor of science degree in commerce, majoring in accounting. She later attended Misamis University in Ozamiz City where she graduated in 1991 with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Elsa worked as a clinical instructor at Misamis University for several years until moving to Sleepy Eye in July of 1995. She worked as a registered nurse at Divine Providence Community Home until her death. Elsa enjoyed babysitting her niece and nephew, shopping, traveling, going to movies and dining out.
She is survived by her father, Kiang Lian Kee of Ozamiz City, Phillipines; brothers and sisters, Susan and husband Leon Treml of rural Springfield, Marilyn and husband Manuelito Vasquez, Angelito and wife Joan Kiang, Helen Lim, Edgar Kiang and Jane Lim, all of Ozamiz City; nieces and nephews, Samantha and Lee Treml, Mel Joseph Vasquez, Miles Keith Vasquez, Liana Francis Kiang and Anthea Kiang. Elsa is also survived by aunts and uncles; and friend Gene Swede of Redwood Falls. She was preceded in death by her mother, Germana Lim Kiang; maternal grandmother, Cornelia Betinol Lim; and paternal grandparents, Kiang Sip Sr. and Lo Siok Eng.
Elmer Henry Moeller, 80, of Hastings, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Regina Hospital in Hastings. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Our Saviors Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hastings with interment in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Thomas Ellis Funeral Home of Hastings handled the arrangements.
Elmer was born June 12, 1920, in Cobden to Olga and Hans Moeller. He served in World War II and served under George C. Patton in the Majave Desert and the Battle of the Bulge.
Elmer is survived by Verna of Hastings, his loving wife of 55 years; son Robert and wife Sharon, of Omaha, Neb.; daughters, Linda of Chicago, Ill., Pamela and husband Richard Esse of Northfield, and Rebecca and husband Randy Cordes of Hastings; many grandchildren; sisters, Sal Trebesch and Lois and her husband Byron of Cobden, and Syvilla Fromm of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Vincent and Willmer Moeller.
Allen E. Schwint, 80, of Long Prairie, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at his home. Services were held Monday, Feb. 12, at United Methodist Church in Long Prairie, with interment in Evergreen cemetery in Long Prairie.
Allen was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Eden Township, Brown County, Minn., to George and Katherine (Day) Schwint. He grew up in the Sleepy Eye-Morgan area, attending country school in Evan. He married Adeline Dobberstein on March 13, 1944 in Evan. Allen worked hauling milk for the Evan Creamery until 1948 and then farmed north of Browerville, and worked at the Staples Creamery. He has lived in Long Prairie since 1958. He worked at the Standard Oil Station and at Hart Trailer Sales for 25 years, retiring in 1982. His hobby was collecting Tonka Trucks, having over 100 at one time. He also enjoyed fishing.
Allen is survived by his wife, Adeline of Long Prairie; brother, Lawrence Schwint of Long Prairie; and sister, Kathryn Pitzl of Hendricks. He was preceded in death by brothers, Louis, Maurice and Maynard Schwint; twin sister, Alice Wegner; and his parents.
Abigale Rose Peterson, 5, of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the New Ulm Medical Center. Services will be Friday, Feb. 23, 11 a.m., at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan, with interment at a later date. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, and continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
She is survived by her parents, DuWayne and Shannon (Duffy) Peterson of Sleepy Eye; brother, Samuel, at home; paternal grandparents, Jim and Melva (Young) Peterson of Sleepy Eye; maternal grandparents, Larry and Shari (Rangel) Duffy of Duluth; great-grandparents, Ralph and Ruth Rangel of McAllen, Texas; uncles and aunts, Shawn and Debbie Duffy of Andover, Lisa and Frank Hoag of Andover, Darren and Beth Duffy of Zimmerman, Kevin and Tammy Duffy of Fort Pole, Iowa, Susan and Leon Hoffmann of Sleepy Eye, Nancy and Gordy Ericson of Inver Grove Heights, Linda and Dwight Sorenson of South St. Paul, Joel and Julie Young of Chatfield, Terry and Dayna Young of Inver Grove Heights, Jon Young of Minneapolis; and many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Norma Peterson; great-grandparents, Adelaide and Jack Duffy; and uncles, Dennis Peterson and Tom Duffy.
Abigale was born March 4, 1995, during a snowstorm at New Ulm Medical Clinic, the daughter of DuWayne and Shannon (Duffy) Peterson. She brought joy to our lives for five short years of which we were blessed. Abby attended kindergarten at Springfield Public School in Mrs. Hoek's KA class. She will miss her very dear friends. She rode bus #4 and was very proud of that independence. Abby attended dance at Anita Runck's Conservatory of Dance in Lamberton, was a baptized member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan and attended Sunday School there with her brother, Samuel. She leaves behind a brother who loved her dearly and will miss his best playmate at home. She enjoyed reading, writing, her library card, Barbies and babies, especially Tigger--her stuffed puppet, pets and walking in the woods. God bless you baby, we will miss you always. We know you are safe in grandma's, grandpa's and your uncles' arms.

Alice Levita Popken, 85, of Sleepy Eye died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 4-8 p.m., and Thursday from 7:30-11 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 22, 11:30 a.m. at the Divine Providence Community Home chapel with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Alice Levita Hayes was born Nov. 12, 1915, to Lawrence and Alice (Savage) Hayes in Bingham Lake. Levita grew up on the family farm near Comfrey and graduated from Comfrey High School. After graduation she attended Mankato State Teachers College and taught in Mapleton, Darfur and later near Sleepy Eye. She married Elmer Popken Aug. 21, 1940, in Comfrey. Levita and Elmer purchased a furniture store in Sleepy Eye and ran that until Elmer's death. She enjoyed many volunteer activities such as the hospital auxiliary and Meals on Wheels. Levita was part of Christian Women, Dancing Grandmothers and bowling. She was elected to the Sleepy Eye bowling hall of fame.
Levita is survived by her sons, Robert of Mendota Heights, James and wife Karen of Big Sky, Mont., and Thomas of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Marri and husband Thomas Whittet of New Ulm; grandchildren, Stephanie, Grady, Kylie Whittet, and Becky Stockman; great-grandchild, Devin Whittet; brothers, Richard of Glencoe and Ronald of Austin; sisters, Louella Roddy of Long Beach, Calif., Elaine Blackman of East Grand Forks, and Lois Ann Kovacovich of Danville, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; son, William; brother, Lawrence; and sisters, Loretta, JoAnn and Marcella.
Glenn Lloyd Gregg, 87, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital in Sleepy Eye. Services were held Monday, Feb. 19, at Faith United Methodist Church with interment in Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Glenn was born May 9, 1913, in Forest City, Iowa to Paul and Myrtle (England) Gregg. He attended country school in Iowa and moved to Sleepy Eye with his family. Glenn graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School. Following graduation, he attended Barber College in Minneapolis and returned to Sleepy Eye to work with his brother. Glenn also worked with his father on the farm. On June 11, 1941, Glenn married Leona Nelson. They lived northwest of Sleepy Eye, and farmed with Glenn's father. Glenn was a member of Faith United Methodist Church of Sleepy Eye. He enjoyed fishing and trips to Canada with friends and family, and watching football and baseball.
Glenn is survived by his wife Leona of Sleepy Eye; son, Randy Gregg of Chaska; grandchildren, Jennifer and Amy Gregg of Chaska; brother, Floyd and wife Gen Gregg of Sleepy Eye; and sister-in-law, Ida Gregg of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Aaron and Gerald Gregg; sister, Fern Remus; and a daughter-in-law, Sandra in 1999.
Memorial services for Milton Donavon Burghart, 71, were held Feb. 10, 2001, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Paul, with interment in Union Cemetery of Maplewood.
Milton, the son of Leslie and Bessie Burghart, was born in New Ulm on July 13, 1929. His early life was spent in Home Township, where he attended what was then "Pleasant Grove" school. He graduated from Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson in 1948. He served in the armed forces of the United States of America and as a veteran of the Korean Conflict, received a bronze star. On July 30, 1951, Milton married Blanche Anderson in Walnut Grove. The young couple moved to St. Paul where Milton worked for the railroad until retirement. He is survived by his wife, Blanche; daughter, Vicki and husband William Lunz of Maplewood, Jennet and husband Thomas Kratt; and two granddaughters, Hannah and Shae of Oakdale. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Orville and Lucille Burghart of Hutchinson; and well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Doris Current, Marvin and Lyle Burghart, Lavina Wolfe and Eileen Burghart.
Robert L. Pieper, 71, of rural Hanska, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 1 at the Lake Hanska Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Firle Funeral Home in Hanska, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Robert Louis Pieper, the son of Louis and Maybelle (Conlin) Pieper, was born June 2, 1929, in Fairmont. He grew up in Martin County and attended Trimont area schools, moving with his family to Oregon when he was a teenager. He entered the United States Army in 1951, serving in Korea, receiving his honorable discharge in 1953. He married Laura Asche on May 26, 1956, in St. Peter. They made their home in Estherville, Iowa where he worked as a policeman. In 1957, the family moved to Madelia, where he served as police chief. He later worked 30 years for Meyer and Sons of Mankato in sales, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Lake Hanska Lutheran Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
Robert is survived by his wife Laura of Hanska; sons, Scott Pieper, Bryce Pieper, Britt Pieper and his wife Jeri; grandson, Chance Pieper; all of Hanska; two sisters, Gwen Wolford of Estacada, Oregon, Rosamond Groth of Two Harbors; sister-in-law, Lois Lenz and husband Dale of Fairmont; brother-in-law, Harlan Asche of Mississippi; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Arthur, Rollie and Fred; and 2 sisters, Gertrude and Geraldine.
Dolores E. Steinhaus, 75, of New Ulm, died Feb. 24, 2001, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Feb. 27 at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with interment in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm handled the arrangements.
Dolores was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Sleepy Eye to Albert and Ida (Grundmeyer) Knapp. She married Melvin "Curly" Steinhaus on June 21, 1946, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. After marriage, they lived in New Ulm, where she worked at Wearwell Garments, Windings and then 3M until she retired in 1983. After retiring, they moved to Pine River until returning to New Ulm in 1992. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the ladies and church choir, and the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post 132 Auxiliary in New Ulm.
Dolores is survived by her husband Melvin L. "Curly" Steinhaus, a resident of Countryside apartments in Sleepy Eye; daughters, Marlene and husband Gary Krzmarzick of New Ulm, and Karla and husband Reverend Michael Dietz of O Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren, Nicole, Matthew, Christopher and Zachary; sister, Imelda and husband Raymond Havemeier of New Ulm; and brother-in-law, Percy Alfred of New Ulm. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Irene Alfred.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials go to the St. Paul's Parish Center or the American Cancer Society.
Erna Thill Schugel, 81, New Ulm, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, with interment in the Catholic cemetery in New Ulm. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home of New Ulm handled the arrangements.
Erna was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Brighton Township, Nicollet County, to William D. and Marie (Ulrich) Gieseke. She attended and graduated from DMLC High School in New Ulm. On April 16, 1941, she married Sylvester Thill at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage, they lived in Courtland. Erna had worked at the Wearwell Garment Factory, Windings, and Tactronics, all of New Ulm. Later in life, she worked as a cook at the Lafayette Good Samaritan Center in Lafayette. On Jan. 11, 1980, she married Harold Schugel at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage, they continued to live in Courtland. In 1993, she moved to New Ulm and lived at Sunset Apartments. She moved to Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye on Feb. 19, 2001. Erna was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Nicollet, and the Senior Citizens in New Ulm. Erna loved flower gardening, watching the Twins baseball games, sewing, quilting, fishing, playing cards and bingo.
Erna is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Rita Kollmann of North Mankato, Ruth and Roger Voges of Courtland, and Betty and Tom Giefer of New Ulm; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Jean Thill of Courtland; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Alma Voges of Courtland, Leorda Marxhausen of Bloomington, Myrtle Fischer of New Ulm, and Marie and husband Allen Leinberger of Beverly Hills, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin and Leanora Gieseke, Bill and Betty Gieseke, Vernon and Myrtle Gieseke, Jim and Maureen Gieseke, all of New Ulm, and Gerald and Delores Gieseke of Mahnomen; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Gieseke of Henderson, June Gieseke of Fosston, Mildred Gieseke of New Ulm, and Helen Baier of New Ulm. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Sylvester Thill; her second husband, Harold Schugel; an infant son, Robert; and brothers, Lorenz, Marlin and Reinhold Gieseke.
Arnold Alton Meyer, 87, Springfield, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at Springfield Medical Center in Springfield. Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Springfield.
Arnold was born Oct. 15, 1913, in Brookville Township, Redwood County on the Meyer farm, the son of John and Adelina (Schultz) Meyer. He grew up and attended St. John Lutheran School in Sleepy Eye, graduating from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1931. After his schooling, he worked on this fathers farm and started a trucking business, which he operated for many years. He married Mildred Blocker on Jan. 5, 1940, at St. John Lutheran Church in Springfield. The couple made their home on the Meyer home farm in Brookville Township, where they lived and farmed for many years. Arnold also did custom corn shelling for over 50 years. He retired from farming at the age of 65, and sold the farm to his oldest son. Arnold and Mildred celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1990. Arnold enjoyed mowing, but his favorite pastime was rebuilding tractor and truck motors. Arnold was a long time member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.
Arnold is survived by his children, Carol Kruschke of Belle Plaine, Steven and wife Mickey Meyer of Springfield, and David and wife Carol Meyer of Granite Falls; eight grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene Fruehling of Tulsa, Okla.; and step-brother, Gilbert Utecht of Sleepy Eye. He is preceded in death by his sister in infancy in 1908, sister, Alice in 1927; mother, Adelina in 1930; father, John in 1957; step-mother, Ernestina Meyer in 1971; step-sister, Melinda Wersal; brother-in-law, Siegfried Fruehling; and wife, Mildred in 1999.
