Donald "Don" McMullen, 79, of Comfrey, died March 28, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Services were held Monday, April 2, 2001, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey, with interment in St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery.
Don McMullen, son of Patrick and Teresa (Lodes) McMullen, was born June 1, 1921, in Madelia. He grew up in the Madelia area, attended Madelia School and graduated from St. James High School in 1940. On Sept. 1, 1942, Don joined the U.S. Navy and served in WWII, aboard the USS Sampson and the USS Burdo. On July 16, 1944, he married Anna Mae McMorrow at St. James Catholic Church. Following his honorable discharge on Feb. 4, 1946, he returned to Madelia and farmed. The couple moved to Comfrey in 1957, and farmed in Selma Township. Don attended Canby Vo-Tech and in conjunction with farming, he worked with the John Deere Company in sales, and later by Ludewig Brothers - Oliver Dealership in Comfrey. In 1972 he started working for NaChurs Fertilizers as a District Sales Manager and in 1987, became a distributor. Don continued working for NaChurs until the present time and was the owner and operator of the Springfield Division of All Crop Fertilizers. He was Secretary for Cottonwood County Corn Growers, belonged to the Albin Johnson American Legion Post No. 244 in Comfrey, and the Sleepy Eye VFW. Don enjoyed his family and friends, working with crops and plants, golfing, farm shows and plot tours. He looked forward to reunions with the crew of the U.S.S. Sampson.
Donald is survived by his wife, Anna Mae McMullen of Comfrey; daughters, Donna and husband Tom Turbes of Lamberton, Barbara and husband Eugene Bertrand of Sleepy Eye, and Joann McMullen of Comfrey; sons, Joe and wife Jeanette McMullen of Plummer, Richard and wife Susan McMullen of Comfrey, and James and wife Pamela McMullen of Sleepy Eye; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia and husband Wilbert Zastrow of Amboy; sisters-in-law, Teresa McMullen of Lewisville and Margaret and husband Ervin Sturm of Fairmont; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert McMullen; sister, Phyllis Starkweather; and two grandchildren, Michael Turbes and Amanda McMullen.
Military honors by: Albin-Johnson American Legion Post 244 of Comfrey and the Sleepy Eye VFW. Casket bearers were Wayne Turbes, Brian Turbes, Dan Sackett, Alan McMullen, Scott McMullen, and Steven McMullen. Honorary casket bearers were Connie Turbes, Sharon Corbett, Jennifer McMullen, Tara Roettger, Melissa McMullen and Charlotte McMullen.

Byron C. Horton, II, 54, of Glencoe, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 4, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe, with interment in the Glencoe Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
Byron Clinton Horton, II was born June 25, 1946, in Glencoe, the son of Byron C. and Rose E. (Voelker) Horton. He was baptized on Sept. 29, 1946 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe by Rev. E. Streufert. Byron attended Glencoe High School. In his high school years he began operating his own salvage business in Glencoe Township. On May 21, 1966, Byron was united in marriage with Doreen Bentz at the Church of Peace in Norwood. The couple had two children, Pam and Wade. The family has made their home on Byron's family farm in Glencoe Township. Along with the salvage business, Byron had also operated a gravel business. He loved to spend his time attending auctions and sales, operating heavy equipment, and reading about automobiles.
Byron is survived by his wife, Doreen Horton of Glencoe; daughter, Pam Horton and fiance' Ted Grego of Glencoe; son, Wade Horton of Glencoe; grandchildren, Ben Lohse, Angie Lohse, and Teddi Grego; mother, Rose Horton of Sleepy Eye; sister, Barbara Jean Horton Dickson and husband Charles William of Redmond, Wash.; mother-in-law, Hildegard Bentz of Norwood Young America; sister-in-law, Eleanor and husband Tom Kottke of Chanhassen; brothers-in-law, Stanley Bentz and fiance' Dinah Kunst of Waconia, Ronald Bentz of Norwood Young America and Steven and wife Wanda Bentz of Watertown; as well as many other relatives and friends.
Casket bearers were Keith Horton, Rodney Horton, Bob Kunkel, Kraig Kunkel, Wayne Schultz and Travis Stradtmann.

Willus Strate
Willus Strate, 83, New Ulm, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery with full military honors.
Willus Fred Strate, son of William and Minnie (Wagner) Strate, was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Milford Township, Brown County. He attended New Ulm Public Schools, graduating in 1936. He worked for Eibner's and the New Ulm Laundry before entering the United States Army in April, 1942. Willus served in Guadalcanal and the Philippines during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to New Ulm. He was united in marriage to Lillian Fenske on March 9, 1948, in Iowa. The couple made their home in New Ulm, where Willus worked for Ahren's Sheet Metal and then spent the next 29 years with the New Ulm Post Office, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, holding various positions over the years. Willus was a member of the VFW Post #1548 and the American Legion Post #132 of New Ulm. During his lifetime, he was an avid sportsman, playing softball, hunting and fishing.
Willus is survived by his wife, Lillian Strate of New Ulm; sons, Chuck Strate of Elkhorn, Wis., and James Strate of Pekin, Ill.; daughter, Joanne Strate of Minnetonka; grandsons, Michael Strate of Minnetonka and Josef Strate of Nantucket, Maine; sister, Lois Berg of Park Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Emerson Strate and Glenn Strate; and brother-in-law, Carroll Berg.

Magnus James "Mag" Hittesdorf
Magnus James Hittesdorf, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center, New Ulm. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery.
Mag was born Dec. 29, 1915, in Mitchell, S.D., the son of Peter and Josephine (List) Hittesdorf. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and attended St. Mary's School. He married Ruby Marie Clasen on April 9, 1938, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Mag worked with his father as a care taker at St. Mary's Church and later the two operated the Sleepy Eye Mattress Company, which also included a shoe repair business. He worked part-time as a truck and bus driver and as an employee at Stimpert Enterprises. Mag later became a full-time employee at Del Monte in the mechanic shop. He retired from the company in 1980 after 20 years of dedicated service. Mag, an avid sports fan, enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He also volunteered his time as a member of the Sleepy Eye Fire Department. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
Mag is survived by his sons, Thomas and wife Angie Hittesdorf of Garden Grove, Calif., James and wife Marlene Hittesdorf of Waco, Tex., Patrick "P.J." and wife Shari Hittesdorf of Sleepy Eye, and Leslie and wife Gail Hittesdorf of Little Falls; daughters, Patricia and husband Jerome Weicherding of Sleepy Eye, Carol Hittesdorf of Mankato, Rosalie Hoeft of Eagan, Claire and husband David McDowell of Sleepy Eye, Marilyn and husband Gary Vait of Sleepy Eye and JoAnne and husband Gary Johnson of Sleepy Eye; 29 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Hittesdorf of Calif.; sisters, Theresa VonBrethorst of Long Beach, Calif., and Marie Bogle of Windom; brothers-in-law, Robert Clasen of Spillville, Iowa, Donald and wife Arlene Clasen of Pine City, Mahlon Clasen of St. Paul, James and wife Georgene Clasen of New York City, N.Y., and David and wife Lenive Clasen of Lawson, Mo.; sisters-in-law, DeEtta Hauge of Big Fork, Mont., Ina and husband Gerald Maxwell of Pharr, Tex., Hazel and husband Roman Koll of Morgan, Marlene and husband Ray Prohaska of Clear Lake, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruby; and daughter and grandson, both in infancy.

Ruth S. Klingseisen
Ruth S. Klingseisen, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Monday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements
Ruth was born Dec. 27, 1917, in Cobden, the daughter of Gustav and Amanda (Grundmeyer) Gulke. She grew up and attended country school near Cobden. Ruth married Frank Klingseisen on July 9, 1937, in Springfield. The couple made their home in Springfield, later moving to Sleepy Eye. Ruth worked at Snow's Hatchery for a short time and then as a bookkeeper for Hose Ace Hardware for many years. She also worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye. Ruth was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.
Ruth is survived by her son, Robert and wife Diane of Shoreview; grandchildren, Jettye Rae and husband Ken Wallberg and their children, Jessica, Adam and Cassie; Todd Klingseisen and his children, Kristine, Josh, Wade and Anna; Matthew Klingseisen and Mark Klingseisen; brother-in-law, Claus Evers of Sleepy Eye; and several nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank in 1970; brother, Vernon; and sisters, Mildred Evers, Leona Zellmer and Lorraine Christensen.

Joseph M. Huberty
Joseph Michael Huberty, 95, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery.
Joe was born April 29, 1906, in Watkins, and graduated from high school in 1918. After attending St. Cloud Business College for one year, he began his business career in 1925, at Zapp State Bank in St. Cloud, and moved to the Tracy Produce Company in 1931, where he worked in the areas of accounting, procurement and marketing management. Later, he was employed by the A.J. Pietrus Company, in a similar capacity, and as vice-president from 1952 until 1974 when he retired. Joe served as director and officer of the Minnesota State Poultry Association for 10 years and attended many national poultry conventions and conferences. He was elected Tracy city councilman and Mayor in the 1940s and early 1950s.
Joe is survived by his wife, Marie; four children; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers were Michael Huberty, Patricia Prokosch, John Huberty, Sara Beggs, Sean Huberty, David Huberty, Kathryn Huberty and Laura Huberty.

Terrance "Terry" W. Krambeer
Terrance "Terry" W. Krambeer, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Terry was born Feb. 10, 1917, in Sigel Township, Brown County, the son of Fred and Lena (Schaverstick) Krambeer. He grew up and attended country school and St. Mary's Catholic School in Sleepy Eye. Terry married Ordell Soukup on Oct. 7, 1939, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Terry worked at Stark Creamery and Sleepy Eye Creamery. He later went to work for the City of Sleepy Eye, with the Street Department, for many years. Terry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus and he enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Terry is survived by his wife, Ordell Krambeer of Sleepy Eye; sons, Jack Krambeer of Minneapolis, and Bob and wife Mary Krambeer of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Joseph; brothers, Fred and Jean Krambeer and Francis and Verna Krambeer all of New Ulm; and sister-in-law, Arlene Krambeer of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Tom; brother, Gervase Krambeer; and sister, Delores Bruckbauer.

Alex Sellner
Alex Sellner, 75, of Rosemount, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Burnsville.
Funeral services were held Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rosemount, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye, with full military rites.
Alex is survived by his daughters, Linda Klamm, and Marlene Murray; sons, Mike Sellner, David Sellner and Robert Sellner; nine grandchildren; sisters, Marcella Suess, Bernice Kirchner, Patricia Soukup and Barbara Mielke; and brother, Floyd Sellner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; and parents, Wenzel and Barbara (Zangel) Sellner of Sleepy Eye.

Blanch M. Witucki
Blanche M. Witucki, 90, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Friday at the Divine Providence Community Home chapel, with interment in New Ulm Catholic Cemetery, New Ulm. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Blanche was born June 8, 1911, in Silver Lake, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Sobeslavsky) Andrews. She grew up and graduated from high school in Silver Lake. Blanche married Daniel Witucki on Sept. 25, 1930, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Silver Lake. The couple made their home in Silver Lake until 1942, when they moved to Minneapolis. They later lived in Frontenac, and then New Ulm, until retiring in 1973, at which time they moved to Lafayette. Blanche moved to Divine Providence Community Home in May of 1998. She was a member of the Third Order of Lay Franciscans, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Lafayette, Christian Mothers and Catholic Aid.
Blanche is survived by her daughters, Juanita and Gene Carlson of Klamath Falls, Ore., Mary Seetaram of Houston, Tex., Martha Witucki of Sleepy Eye, and Margaret Kaldon of Jackson, Miss.; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Daniel in 1987; sons, Daniel, Jr. in 1957, and Fred in 1991; and sisters, Martha Andrews and Mary Riley.

Myron "Mike" D. Berkner
Myron "Mike" Donald Berkner, 78, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, while traveling in Texas. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Mike was born April 6, 1923, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Harold and Katherine (Huiras) Berkner. He grew up and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. He married Pearl Guldager on May 17, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The couple farmed near Sleepy Eye for many years, until retiring in 1983. Mike and Pearl lived at the lake near Park Rapids in the summers, and in Mesa, Ariz., in the winters. Due to Mike's health, they had lived in Sleepy Eye full time the last two years. Mike was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. His favorite past times were fishing at the lake, lawn bowling in Arizona and being with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his wife, Pearl of Sleepy Eye; son, Bill and wife Karen Berkner of St. Michael; daughter, Julie and husband Bill Hughes of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Amber, Joey, Ryan, Jessica, Elizabeth and Alex; brothers, Randy Berkner of Sleepy Eye; Richard and wife Barbra Berkner of Mankato, Dave and wife Sandy Runing of White Bear Lake, and Curt and wife Mary Runing of Casa Grande, Ariz., and sister, Ramona Rickie of Blue Earth. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Cecelia; sister, Barbara; infant sister, Rosemary; sister-in-law, Dolly Berkner; and brother-in-law, Bill Rickie.

Oyler Brudelie
Oyler Brudelie, 89, Hanska, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Luther Memorial Home in Madelia. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church, rural Hanska, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Firle Funeral Home, Hanska, and one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
Oyler Maynard Brudelie, the son of George and Nina (Ouren) Brudelie, was born Oct. 6, 1912, on his family farm in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County. As a child, he attended country school and later Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and Mankato Business College. He was united in marriage to Helen Leaf on June 27, 1940, in Austin. They continued to live on and operate the family farm in Lake Hanska Township. The couple retired from farming in 1980, and moved into Hanska in 1981. Helen died Dec. 9, 1986. Oyler married Marian (Goor) Olson on Oct. 31, 1987 at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church. They continued to make their home in Hanska. Oyler had just become a resident of Luther Memorial Home on March 11, 2002. He was an active member of Lake Hanska Church, having held many offices through the years. Oyler was a pilot and musician, and past president of Brown County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Sleepy Eye Drum and Bugle Corps, Over 60 Band, Lake Crystal Community Band, Hanska Harmony Band and the "Hanska University Band." Oyler enjoyed woodworking and travel, having visited 27 countries, including Norway several times.
Oyler is survived by his wife, Marian of Hanska; nephew, Wayne and his wife Jean Brudelie of Hanska; niece, Edith Dankert of Minneapolis; stepsons, Eugene and wife Cecelia Olson of Bloomington, Lynn and wife Helen Olson of New Ulm, Charles and wife Dorene Olson of Hanska; step-daughters, Judi Olson-Cooksey and husband Jerry of Solsberry, Ind., Linda and husband Royce Wempen of St. Peter; and many step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and other relatives. Oyler was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; sister, Edythe LaRue Brudelie; and brothers, George and Walter Brudelie.

Reynold "Chris" Christensen
Reynold "Chris" Christensen, 90, Roseville, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at St. Otto's Care Center in Little Falls. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 9, 10:30 a.m., at North Como Presbyterian Church, 965 Larpenteur Ave. W, Roseville.
Chris was born Sept. 27, 1911, the son of Albert and Martha (Simonsen) Christensen. He attended high school in Sleepy Eye, graduating with the class of 1930. After high school, Chris attended Moorhead State Teachers College in Moorhead, graduation with the class of 1934. He began his 43 year teaching career in Hanska in 1935. Chris was united in marriage to LaDonna Palmer, his high school sweetheart, in 1936. The couple then moved to Battle Lake. Chris' teaching took him to Farmington, Rushford, Red Wing and Cannon Falls. Upon his retirement, Chris and LaDonna moved to Roseville. Chris continued his music, by playing with the Golden Tones and the Roseville Community Band.
Chris is survived by his sister, Leona Baird of Roseville; sons, Dennis and wife Nancy Christensen of Little Falls and Dean of New Brighton; grandchildren, Eric Christensen of Bozeman, Mont., Stephanie Bonner of Austin, Tex., Shelly Kunzman of Brooklyn Park, Darin Christensen of Missoula Mont., and Nelson and wife Lisa Bonner of Buffalo; and two great-grandchildren. Chris was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 59 years, LaDonna; and sisters, Sylvia Ericksen, Lorraine Brady and Hazel Christensen.

Harold Fortwengler
Harold Fortwengler, 83, New Ulm, died March 24, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Ulm, interment in New Ulm City Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by New Ulm Veteran's organizations. Firle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Harold Charles Fortwengler, the son of Frank and Louise (Metzen) Fortwengler, was born July 23, 1918, in Cottonwood Township, Brown County. He attended country school and St. Mary's Parochial Grade School in New Ulm. He entered the United States Army in February 1941, serving in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. While in the military, he was united in marriage to Alyce K. Bauer of Sleepy Eye, on Aug. 20, 1944 in Belton, Tex. Following his honorable discharge in October of 1945, the couple made their home in New Ulm. Harold began working for International Multifoods in February of 1946. He also worked as a painter in his spare time, and also following his retirement from the rye mill in 1982. Harold was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, and had served as an usher for many years, and American Legion Post #132.
Harold is survived by his wife, Alyce; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Deb Fortwengler of Burnsville; granddaughters, Heather and husband Keith Berndt of Shakopee, and Jaime and husband Eric Cichon of Tucson, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Dalton and Paige Berndt of Shakopee; sister, Florinda Richter of New Ulm; brother, Joe and wife Anna Fortwengler of New Ulm; sister-in-law, Martha Sanders of Gaylord; brothers-in-law, Robert and wife Margaret Bauer of New Ulm; Stanley and wife Mary Katherine Bauer of Sleepy Eye; Larry and wife Maggie Bauer of New Ulm, and Donna and husband Don Schumacher of Wanda; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Art and wife Ernestine Fortwengler; brothers-in-law, Linus Bauer and James Bauer; and an infant twin brother and sister at birth.
