Gene M. Cary
Glenna Lee (Richard) Bennett of Proctor is mourning the death of her brother Gene 'Woodchuck' M. Cary. The Cloquet resident died Tues., July 13, 2004, in his home. He was 76.

Gene graduated from Cloquet High School in 1946. He was an Army Veteran serving during WW II with the 511th Parachute Regiment. After the war, he returned to Cloquet and worked at Northwest Paper Co. During the 1950s he worked for MP&L and also drove truck for Erickson Oil. He was a member of the VFW Post 3979 and a lifetime member of the Eagles where he was the president in 1978 and the secretary for many years.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Myrtle and son Glen.

He is also survived by a son Mike (Colleen Lawrence) Cary of Cloquet, four grandchildren, four nephews and his loving companion of 20 years Betty Ann and her four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service was held in Cloquet with Military Honors accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.

Glenn W. Schelin, Greg (Cherie) Schelin of Proctor is mourning the death of his father, Glenn 'Shorty' W. Schelin. The Cloquet resident died Mon., July 19, 2004, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. He was 94.

He was born Oct. 6, 1909, in Alborn and was united in marriage to Ethel M. 'Bobby' Wiles on July 3, 1936, in Culver. Shorty was a lifelong area resident and worked as a plumber most of his life. He was a 55-year member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local #11 and loved inventing things and building sawmills.

He is also survived by his wife Ethel M. 'Bobby', another son, one daughter, his brother Ross (Norma) Schelin of Duluth, his sister Irene Schelin of Duluth, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Memorial Service on Fri., July 23, 2004, in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, followed by a reception in the fellowship room. Inurnment will be at Sunrise Memorial Park in Duluth.

Will Mattson Mackinaw
Barbara Mackinaw is mourning the death of her grandson, Will Mattson Mackinaw. A resident of Fairbanks, Alaska, he died Wed., July 14, 2004, at The Children's Hospital in Denver, Colo., at the age of seven.

Will had just completed kindergarten and enjoyed drawing and creating stories, mushing dogs, fishing and playing with his brother.

He is survived by his loving parents Amy and Todd, a brother, paternal great-grandfather Harold Myers of Duluth, maternal grandparents Lois and Martin Mattson of Canyon, aunt and uncle Julie and Brad Mackinaw and cousins Seamus and Eamonn, all of Duluth, uncle Matthew Mattson of Santa Clara, Calif., Auntie Carol Serber of Chicago, Ill. and many friends and relatives from Alaska to Alabama.

A Celebration Of Will's Life will be held today at 1 p.m. Thurs., July 22, 2004, in Chester Park United Methodist Church, 819 N. 18th Ave. E. Father Kent Drotar of Denver, Colo., will officiate.

Gladys E. Kleiman
Karen (Tom) Vanneste of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Gladys E. Kleiman of Mikana, Wis. She died Mon., July 19, 2004, at the Renville Co. Hospital in Olivia, Minn. She was 86.

The former Gladys VanGilder was born Sept. 13, 1917 at Etna Green, Ind. The family moved to Yarnell, Wis. where she graduated from Birchwood High School. In 1939 she married Harold Kleiman. They moved to Proctor, where she worked in a retail grocery store for 20 years. They then moved to Milwaukee where she worked for the school district. They retired to Mikana in 1979.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Harold Kleiman in 1995.

She is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a sister and three brothers.

Ruth Lenore Barbo
Ruth Lenore Barbo, 85, of Diamond Willow Assisted Living, Proctor, died Wed., July 28, 2004 in her residence.

She was born in Wyndmere, N.D., the daughter of Rev. Johan and Gertrude Engerholm. Ruth graduated from Wyndmere High School and later graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Fargo, N.D. She married Edward I. Barbo on Dec. 5, 1942 in Two Harbors. Ruth was employed by Miller Dwan Hospital as a Registered Nurse, serving in many capacities, retiring in the 1970’s. She was a Charter Member of Faith Lutheran Church and a member of its Rebecca Circle. Ruth truly enjoyed her profession as a Registered Nurse.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edward I., brothers Nils, Peder, Joseph and Gordon and sisters Josephine, Borghild and Helen.

She is survived by her daughter JoAnn (Stanley) Rouse of Duluth and numerous nephews and nieces.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Superior.

Leonard P. Bemel
Leonard P. Bemel, who was born and raised in Proctor, died Mon., July 26, 2004 in Life Care Center, Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was 92.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and married Fern Hubbard on June 23, 1941 in Proctor. He was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Cheyenne, Buckle Club, Cheyenne Country Club and several Cheyenne community service organizations. He had been owner of a gas station, worked in real estate and then for the Wyoming Highway Department in Interstate Right-of-Way Procurement.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern on Feb. 6, 1998 and a sister, Dorothy Tyler.

Survivors include a nephew, John F. Burdoin of Dublin, Cal. and longtime friend and former employee, Budd Chapman.

Graveside services were held earlier in the week at Oneota Cemetery.

Sister Aelred (Doris Mae) Roehl
Sister Aelred (Doris Mae) Roehl, OSB, who began teaching elementary grades at St. Rose School in Proctor, died Mon., July 26, 2004. She was 78.

She was born in Eden Prairie, Minn. and took her vows in 1945. In 1975, she received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in Cincinnati. At the time of her death she was the St. Scholastica Monastery archivist.

Services were held last week. Interment was in Gethsemane Cemetery.

Gerald Francis Rood
Gerald Francis Rood, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1942 and retired as a locomotive engineer from D.M.&I.R. Railway Co. following 30 years of service, died peacefully in his Hermantown home on Aug. 3, 2004. He was 81.

He was born in Duluth on June 18, 1923 to Ole and Violet (Gaborieaux) Rood. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. He married his wife of 54 years, Lorraine A. Carlson on Oct. 1, 1949. He worked for nine years at Diamond Tool & Horseshoe Co., Duluth and served as a scoutmaster for troop 90 of Salem Lutheran Church for six years. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig. In addition to his work, he was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed gardening and country music. He often stated, “The twangier it is, the better.”

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Henry Rood of Mesa, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughter Cynthia (Mark) Scott of Princeton, Minn., son Kevin Rood of Robbinsdale, Minn., grandchildren Michael, Shannon, Jamie Rood and Nathan Benoit, step-grandchildren Michael and Daniel Scott, sister Patricia (John) Hussey of Twig, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Interment will be at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery.

John A. Malec
John A. Malec, who was born in Proctor on Nov. 22, 1919, passed away on Sat., Aug. 7, 2004, at Vista St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan. John, a resident of Beach Park, Ill., was 84.

He married his late wife, Mary (nee Zernich) in November of 1946. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served 21 years during World War II and the Korean War. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer (ADC). After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for Bob & Doug Koss Amoco in Waukegan. John was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was a 60-year member of the Waukegan Moose Lodge #706 where he was also Governor of Legion 169 and had a Pilgrim Degree. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve of Great Lakes, Ill.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1993, and brothers Joe, Walt and Frank Malec.

He is survived by his daughter Carol (John) Babnik of Beach Park, grandchildren John (Marielle) Babnik, Scott Babnik and Stacey (Chris) Clark, great-grandchildren Madeline and John Babnik III and a sister Betty (Gene) Backus of Edina, Minn.

Interment with full Military Honors at Highland Memorial Park in Libertyville, Ill.

Dennis Edward Kanke
Services were held earlier this week for Dennis Edward Kanke of Saginaw, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Van Horne, Iowa. He passed away Thurs., Aug. 5, 2004 at the age of 54.

He was born in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1967. Dennis was a Vietnam veteran having served in the Marine Corps from 1968-1972. He was active in the Vietnam P.O.W./M.I.A., VFW, North Vets Association. Dennis had many interests, including photography, boating, fishing and especially spoiling his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Irene Kanke.

Dennis is survived by his wife of six years Carol, children Chad Allen Kanke and Jennifer (Shai) Skalsky both of Iowa, Melissa (Roger) Pavlovec, Jessica and Patricia Kanke, all of Minn., stepchildren Donald (April) of S.D., Faye of Texas, brothers Gordon of Iowa, Richard of Fla., sisters Karen James of N.C., Jean Norton of Iowa, nine grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Kathy M. (McGovern) Fossum
Kathy M. (McGovern) Fossum, who was a lifelong Proctor and Esko resident and a 1965 PHS graduate, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, as the angels took her to heaven on Wed., Aug. 11, 2004, in St. Luke’s Hospice. She was 57.

She was born on July 16, 1947, in Duluth to Philip and Ethel (Stahl) McGovern. She married Steve Fossum on Feb. 27, 1990, in Duluth. Kathy had been an employee of the former Austin Proctor Hardware Store for 17 years, had worked at other hardware stores and was currently a pharmacy technician at Cloquet Wal-Mart. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Parish, Proctor and had served on the St. Rose School Board for many years. Kathy was a talented artist and crafter who enjoyed crocheting, woodworking, painting, flower gardening and donating her crafts to various churches.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Ryan and Philip McGovern.

Survivors include her husband Steve, daughters Amy (Jon) Presuhn of Superior, Beth (Eric) Padilla of Esko and Teri (Darien) Berg of Wrenshall, sisters Nancy (Earl) Anderson of Farmington and Susie (James) Heinz of Gwinn, Mich., sister-in-law Donna (Ryan) McGovern of Mounds View, grandchildren Eric and Nicole Presuhn and Osten Berg and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held last Friday in St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiated. Burial was in Hermantown Cemetery.
