Stella Mary Pyan
Stella Mary Pyan, 96, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Stella was born Nov. 15, 1905, in Edgar, Wisc., the daughter of Peter and Mary (Gretchen) Wagner. She grew up in Edgar, Wisc., where she graduated from high school. Stella married Fred Pyan on Oct. 10, 1924, in Edgar. The couple moved to Sleepy Eye in 1942, where Stella worked for St. Mary's School as a cook with the hot lunch program for over 20 years. Fred preceded her in death in 1988. Stella was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Christian Mothers and the Sleepy Eye Study Club. She enjoyed playing cards and crocheting.
Stella is survived by her son, Douglas and wife Marian Pyan of St. Peter; daughter, Sally Ann and husband Thomas Forstner of Austin; daughter-in-law, Karen Pyan of Sleepy Eye; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; son, Rolland; four sisters and two brothers.
Casket bearers were Jeffrey Pyan, Steven Pyan, Daniel Pyan, Sanford Forstner, Blaine Pyan, Brad Pyan, Boyd Pyan and Michael Pyan.
Mary Lou Rogers
Mary Lou Rogers, 40, Hanska, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at her home in rural Hanska. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Clements, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
Mary Lou was born Jan. 22, 1962, in Sleepy Eye, to Jerome and Arlene (Stock) Landkammer. She attended and graduated from Wabasso High School in 1980, after which she earned an associate degree in graphic arts at Willmar Vocational Technical College. Mary Lou began her career at Advertising Unlimited, now Norwood Promotional Products, in Sleepy Eye, where she worked for the past 17 years. On Dec. 7, 1996, Mary Lou married Ron Rogers at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clements. Mary Lou's hobbies included making and tailoring clothing, sewing, and especially family gatherings during the holidays.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Ron Rogers of Hanska; parents, Jerome and Arlene Landkammer of Clements; brother, Ken and wife Virginia Landkammer of Clements; sisters, Kathleen and husband Roger Wall of Clements, and Susanne and husband Dave Elinerson of Cottonwood. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and a nephew, Chad Landkammer.
Casket bearers were Jeff Wall, Scott Wall, Scott Ness, Paul Landkammer, Chad Schwartz and Eric Wahlborg.
Norbert R. Soukup
Norbert R. Soukup, 80, of Roseville, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died of A.L.S. at Roseville on March 26, 2002. Funeral services were held April 2 at the Catholic church of St. Rose in St. Paul, with interment in Roselawn Cemetery. Roseville Memorial Chapel Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Norbert was a 1939 graduate of St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. He was the former owner of B & S Crane Service of the Twin Cities, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4021.
Norbert is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Esther "Sis" Wagner Dey; Norbert and the late Harriet's children, Linda Miller of Wash., Beth and husband Mike Granger of White Bear, Rich and wife Pam Soukup of Stacy, Bill and wife Terri Soukup of Stillwater, and Bernie Soukup of White Bear; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; Sis's children, Dr. James and wife Cathy Dey of Waseca, Monica Fahrner (Fulton) of Melrose, Carol Dey and Jeffrey Dey both of St. Paul, Lou Harvey (John) of Omaha Nebr.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; brother of Leonard and wife Katie of Lino Lakes; Robert and wife Rosemary of Columbia Heights, and Rosemary Charboneau (Jean) of Minneapolis.
Ethel Mae Elrichs
Ethel Mae Elrichs, 90, of El Dorado, Kans., died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kans. Services were held Monday at the Assembly of God Church in El Dorado, Kans., with interment in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.
Ethel was born July 26, 1911, at Bowden, S.D., the daughter of John and Mabel Cuenat Ersfeld. She married H. Harry Elrichs on Sept. 16, 1931, at Shaller, Iowa. Henry preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1993. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Ethel is survived by her son, James Elrichs, El Dorado, Kans.; daughters, Gloria Bielen of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Helen Patterson, Apache Junction, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Charles; sisters, Myrtle Otteson and Dorothy Severin; brothers, Eugene, Lawrence and Harold Ersfeld; grandson, Brad Bielen and great-grandson, Rick Ballach.
Melvin "Curly" Steinhaus
Melvin "Curly" Steinhaus, 81, New Ulm, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with interment in the Lutheran cemetery in New Ulm with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veteran's Organizations. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Parish Center.
Melvin was born April 8, 1921, in New Ulm to Henry and Amelia (Zamzow) Steinhaus. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School in New Ulm. Curly was a veteran serving in the United States Army, spending time in both Alaska and the Philippines. On June 21, 1946, he married Dolores Knapp at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Curly worked for the City of New Ulm for 10 years, and then the New Ulm Telephone Company for 34 years, before retiring in 1983. After retirement, they moved to Pine River where Curly continued to enjoy hobby farming and raising beef cattle, as he did while living in New Ulm. In 1992, Curly and Dolores moved back to New Ulm. Curly was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church; a lifetime member of both the American Legion Post #132 and the Albert-Nagel Post, VFW #1648, both in New Ulm; and a member of the New Ulm Battery. Since November of 2001, he resided at Countryside Retirement Community in Sleepy Eye, and for the past two weeks, he was a resident of Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Curly is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene and Gary Krzmarzick of New Ulm, and Karla and Reverend Michael Dietz of O'Fallon, Mo.; grandchildren, Nicole and Ben Kellerstrauss of Madison, Wis., Matthew Dietz of Green Bay, Wis., Christopher Dietz of Appleton, Wis., and Zachary Krzmarzick of St. Paul; sister, Eleanor "Sis" Harmening of New Ulm; brother, Earl Steinhaus, a resident of Countryside Retirement Community in Sleepy Eye; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Imelda and Raymond Havemeier of New Ulm; and brother-in-law Percy Alfred of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dolores on Feb. 24, 1991; and brothers, Ervin and Harvey Steinhaus.
James Arley Rolloff
Jim Rolloff, 59, New Ulm, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were held Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with interment in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery. Full military honors were conducted by the New Ulm Veteran's Organizations. Firle Funeral Home of New Ulm handled the arrangements.
James Arley Rolloff, was born Dec. 15, 1942, in New Ulm, the son of Arley and Phyllis (Runck) Rolloff. He grew up on the family farm in Milford Township where he attended country schools and later New Ulm High School. After graduating from New Ulm High School in 1960, Jim attended the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, earning a bachelor of science degree in dairy industry/food science in 1964. He received National Guard training at Fort Jackson, S.C. and returned to New Ulm in 1965. Jim was united in marriage to Marion Zieske on May 28, 1966, at First Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye. They made their home in Waterloo, Iowa, where Jim worked for the Carnation Company for five years. In 1970, Jim took the position of corporate quality control director for AMPI in New Ulm. He continued with the company until disability caused his retirement in 1999. Jim was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm; Minnesota Sanitarians Association, serving as president for a term; 3A Sanitary Standards Group; Interstate Milk Shippers Association; and the National Milk Producer's Interstate Milk Committee; North Central Cheese Association board of directors; Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Program; and Jim also served on the District 88 School Board for six years, 1977-1983.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marion of New Ulm; daughter, Eva and husband Joel Carlson of Oakdale; son, Eric and wife Jennifer Rolloff of Big Lake; grandchildren, Emma and Andrew Carlson of Oakdale; parents, Arley and Phyllis Rolloff of New Ulm; brother, Carl and wife Lida Rolloff of New Ulm; mother-in-law, Jocelyn Zieske-Sasse of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Betty Trebesch of New Ulm; Janice and husband Fremont Buggert of Mesa, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Fred Zieske and step-father-in-law, Dan Sasse.
Aleseya Marie Wilhelmi
Aleseya Marie Wilhelmi, two months, 29 days, of Rochester, Ind., died at Woodlawn Emergency Room, on June 19, 2002, following a sudden unexpected illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at Foster & Good Funeral Home in Rochester, Ind., with interment in Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rochester.
Aleseya was born March 21, 2002, in Rochester, Ind., the daughter of Jessica Lynn Craft and Erich Wilhelmi.
Aleseya is survived by her parents, Erich and Jessica; sister, Tori LeAnna Craft, at home; maternal grandparents, Dan and Debra Craft of Akron, Ind., and Rick and Theresa McConkay of Tulsa Okla.; paternal grandparents, Tom and Eileen Morris of Claypool, Ind., and Jeffrey Wilhelmi of Sleepy Eye; maternal great-grandparents, Carol Feltis of Rochester, Ind., and Barbara Mikesell of Rochester, Ind.; paternal great-grandparents, Paul and Lucy Wilhelmi of Sleepy Eye, and James and Sheila Fitzgerald of San Antonio, Tex.; several aunts; uncles; and cousins.
Herbert Portner
Herbert Portner, 97, of New Ulm, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Fairfax Community Home. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Herbert was born Oct. 24, 1904, in Sigel Township, Brown County, to Andrew and Barbara (Kral) Portner. He attended country school in Sigel Township, Brown County. On Sept. 9, 1930, Herbert married Verna Zander at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage, they farmed in Linden Township, Brown County for 31 years. The couple retired in 1961, and moved into New Ulm. Herbert then worked as a custodian for the DNR Regional Office in New Ulm. He had been a resident of the Fairfax Community Home since August of 1994. Herbert was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council, both of New Ulm.
Herbert is survived by his niece, Angie and husband Ralph Turbes of Cross Lake; nephew, Wendelin Sellner of New Ulm; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verna Portner on Dec. 9, 1983; 11 brothers and sisters, two of them in infancy; and a niece, Grace Sellner.
Olivia Ganske
Olivia Ganske, 93, Los Angeles, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at her home. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Olivia was born April 26, 1909, in Home Township, Brown County, to Peter and Rosa (Hengel) Krzmarzick. She attended country school in Home Township and later attended Mankato Business College in Mankato. On June 28, 1940, Olivia married Peter Ganske in Los Angele, Calif. After marriage, they continued to live in the Los Angeles area where she worked for Fox International Theatres for 10 years, and then for Farmers Insurance Company for 20 years. She was a member of the Cathedral Catholic Chapel in Los Angeles, and a past member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
Olivia is survived by her daughter, Sharon "Lee Ann" and her husband Fred Bower of Van Nuys, Calif.; grandchildren, Athena Bower of Seattle, Wash., and Dean and wife Maria Bower of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister, Rosella and husband James Schaefer of Worthington; and brother, Anthony Krzmarzick of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Peter Ganske on Dec. 5, 1999; and her brothers, Melvin, Roman and Father Leo Krzmarzick.
Frederick "Fritz" August Krueger
Frederick "Fritz" August Krueger, 88, of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 15, at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Fritz was born Sept. 2, 1913, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Emil and Katherine (Bleninger) Krueger. While growing up, he attended Sleepy Eye schools until the Great Depression forced him to leave school. On Oct. 26, 1938, he was united in marriage with Audrey Roesner in Lafayette. Following marriage, the couple resided in Sleepy Eye. Fritz began to learn the electrical trade as a home business in the late 1940s. His skills in refrigeration, wiring and plumbing resulted in the founding of Krueger Electric. Fritz served on the Sleepy Eye Fire Department and also served 16 years on the Sleepy Eye City Council. While on the City Council he helped in the design and supervision of the new City Hall and Ross Park Apartments.
Fritz is survived by his sons, Frederick, Jr. and wife Linda Krueger of Ellensburg, Wash., and Harold Krueger of Sleepy Eye; grandsons, Frederick Krueger II, and Bill and wife Lillian Krueger of Yakima, Wash.; great-grandsons, Zackery Krueger of Hood River, Ore., and Joshua and Austin Krueger of Yakima, Wash.; and sisters, Viola Berry of Minneapolis and Katherine Polesky of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Audrey on April 6, 2000; and 12 brothers and sisters of 15 family members.
Casket bearers were Richard Boettger, Robert Nelson, Jim LaHay, Charles Nelson, Gary Nelson and Joey Nelson.
Philip Lux Lazatin
Philip Lux Lazatin, infant son of Alexander and Angela Lazatin of Saipan, MP, died on April 26, 2002, of congenital heart disease, at Commonwealth Health Center in Saipan. Twin of Philip, Querubin (Philippino for Little Angel) died during pregnancy. Philip was born at 5:16 a.m. and died at 7:20 a.m. A memorial service was held May 1 at Cabrera's Funeral Home in Saipan, with Father Don-Don Agribay officiating.
Philip is survived by his parents, Alexander and Angela; maternal grandparents, Clifford and JoAnn Lux of Sleepy Eye; maternal great-grandmothers, Nina Selke and Ellen Lux, both of Sleepy Eye; aunts and uncles, Jennifer and Jay Flaten of Lakeville, Lourdes and Isaias Quimbao, Aaron Lazatin and Ahmed Lazatin, all of Santa Ana, Philippines, Lorina and Abad Lazaro of Arayat, Philippines, Aida Lazatin, Arturo and Josenia Lazatin, and Leodigario and Editha Lazatin, all of Santa Anna Philippines, and Lilian Lazatin of Manila, Philippines; cousins, McKenzie and Caroline Flaten of Lakeville, Maria Isabel Ann and Louise Albert Quimbao of Santa Ana, Philippines, Joan and Jhonathan Lazaro of Arayat, Philippines, Emil Ly Lazatin, Cherry Mae and Christine Lazatin, all of Santa Anna, Philippines. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Atelano and Leonora Lazatin; maternal great-grandfathers, Norman Selke and LeRoy Lux; paternal great-grandparents, Ambrosio and Celestina Musngi and Fernando and Maria Lazatin; and aunt, Leodigaria Lazatin in infancy.
Rita M. Hirsch
Rita M. Hirsch, 55, White Bear Lake, died Thursday, May 9. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in White Bear Lake, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Mueller Lake Mortuary of White Bear Lake handled the arrangements.
Rita was born in Sleepy Eye Oct. 21, 1946, the daughter of Joseph and Marcella (Eischen) Hirsch. She graduated from St. Mary's High School, Sleepy Eye, in 1964, and attended St. Cloud School of Nursing, graduating in 1967. Rita also obtained a bachelor of arts degree in business from the College of St. Catherine in 1984. Rita worked as a registered nurse at St. Barnabus Hospital in Minneapolis, St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul, and two hospitals in Arizona. She joined Medtronic in 1973, working on the neurostimulator for pain, movement disorders, new methods of drug delivery and other early stage research programs. In the early 1980s, she joined the Drug Administration Systems group. Rita managed the clinical programs which culminated in the approval of intrathecal morphine for cancer pain and chronic pain, and baclofen for spinal disorders. She also directed clinical activities. In 1996, Rita moved to Europe to set up and oversee drug delivery research. She lived in the Netherlands and later Switzerland. Clinical studies using the pump for cancer pain, chronic pain, spasticity, heart failure, Parkinson's Disease, and Lou Gehrig's Disease were completed in Europe, under her direction. She also oversaw the trial of a new device which would enable pain patients to receive small additional amounts of medication from the pump at their time of need. In December, 2001, Rita was promoted to the position of Director of Clinical Research for the Neurological Division. In addition to her wonderful career, Rita had many interests. She enjoyed music, travel, art, reading, fine dining, sports and learning about other countries and cultures. She loved to have fun.
Rita is survived by her brothers, Thomas and wife Sharon Hirsch of Sleepy Eye, Michael and wife Jean Hirsch of Port Wing, Wisc., and John and wife Eileen Hirsch of Sleepy Eye; sister, Clare and husband Dennis Bowers of Kaukauna, Wisc.; nieces and nephews, Daniel and wife Nikki Hirsch, Charlotte Hirsch, Jacob Hirsch, Gabriel Hirsch, Aaron Hirsch, Michael Hirsch, Paul and wife Kathryn Hirsch, John Hirsch, Theresa and husband Greg Mooney, Joseph Hirsch and Lucy Hirsch. She was preceded in death by her parents.
