Kayla Marie Lough
Kristen Jo Lough
Kayla Marie Lough and Kristen Jo Lough, infant twin daughters of Steven and Christine Lough of New Ulm, were stillborn May 8, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center. Private family graveside services were held Saturday at New Ulm City Cemetery. Firle Funeral Home of New Ulm handled the arrangements.
In addition to their parents, survivors include their sister, Natalie Lough at home; paternal grandmother, Nadeen Lough of New Ulm; paternal grandfather, LeRoy Lough of Houston, Tex.; great-grandmothers, Georgianna Swantz of Brainerd and Ruth Lough of Minneapolis; aunts; uncles; and cousins. They were preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Edward and Shirley Meidl.

John E. Maxson
John E. Maxson, 93, Pine Island, formerly of Kasson, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Pine Haven Care Center, Pine Island. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 23, 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kasson, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Dibble Funeral Home of Kasson handled the arrangements.
John was born and grew up in the Phillipine Islands and later in Whittier, Calif. He graduated from high school in Whittier in 1928 and received a BA degree from Whittier College in 1932, and later a general secondary teaching credential from the University of Southern California. John married Bessie M. Niswander Rasmussen in Osseo on Dec. 28, 1957. He served in the U.S. Army in North Africa 1942-1945 as a radio operator and mechanic, and served in the Army band. After discharge, John worked for Southern California Edison Company in the utility division, from 1945-1973 until his retirement. John and Bessie lived in Whittier, Calif. until moving to Kasson in 1975. Bessie died in 1995. John loved music, playing trombone, playing in the Rio Ronda Symphony Orchestra in California, and serving on it's board of directors, La Mirada Symphony Orchestra and also playing in the community band and singing in chorus.
John is survived by his step-sons, Lyle and wife Colleen Rasmussen of Kasson and Boyd Rasmussen of Oakdale; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Scott Dennis Schroeder
Scott Dennis Schroeder, 18, Hancock, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Hancock. Funeral services were held Friday at Hancock High School, with interment in Lakeside Cemetery, rural Hancock. Pedersen Funeral Home, Morris, handled the arrangements.
Scott, the son of Dennis and Karen (Evers) Schroeder, was born Jan. 19, 1984 in Sleepy Eye, and was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye. In 1990, he moved with his family to Hancock and was later confirmed at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morris. Scott received his education in Hancock and would have graduated with the Hancock High School class of 2002, on Friday, May 17. Scott enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling and slalom water skiing. He was also very mechanically inclined and could take apart and fix almost anything he touched. Most of all, Scott loved spending time with his family and friends.
Scott is survived by his parents, Dennis and Karen Schroeder of Hancock; brothers, Ryan Schroeder of Hancock, Dusty (Kim) Schroeder of Willmar, and Cory Schroeder of Hancock; grandparents, Claus Evers of Sleepy Eye and Marcella Schroeder of Fairfax; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mildred Evers and LeRoy Schroeder.
Serving as casket bearers were Matthew Evers, Steven Schroeder, Corey Bedel, Daniel Evers, Jeremy Brown and Wade Bemmels. Serving as honorary pallbearers for the service were the Hancock High School class of 2002 and the faculty and staff of the Hancock High School.

Joseph F. Schueller
Joseph F. Schueller, 55, Brainerd, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
Joe was born July 28, 1946, the son of E.A. "Tony" and Leona (Seidl) Schueller. He grew up in Sleepy Eye, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1964. He attended Mankato State University. After graduating, he worked in road construction for Minnesota Valley Construction in Granite Falls. He also worked at Arneson Distributing in Sleepy Eye for a couple of years. Joe married Carolyn Davis on July 6, 1974, in Deerwood. On August 27, 1976, Joe went to work for the Minnesota State Patrol. He served in the St. Paul, St. Cloud, Mankato, Virginia and Brainerd districts. He retired on July 31, 2001, after 25 years of service, the last 11 years as captain of the Brainerd district. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, auto racing, pontooning, snowmobiling, German music and spending time with family and friends.
Joe is survived by his wife, Carolyn Schueller of Brainerd; sisters, Marie and husband William R. Weber of Chanhassen, Elaine and husband Patrick Berdan of Burnsville; and Deb and husband Doug Brandl of Sleepy Eye; brother, John and wife Gwen Schueller of Sleepy Eye; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Robert in 1949.
Casket bearers were Al Arneson, Steve Hillesheim, Bill Ibberson, Bob Ibberson, Jerry Steffen and Jerome Kretzman.

Leonard A. Dietz
Leonard A. Dietz, 82, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery with military rites. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Leonard was born July 2, 1919, the son of Joseph and Agnes (Krzmarzick) Dietz. He grew up in Sleepy Eye, graduating from St. Mary's High School. Leonard served in the United States Army during WWII for four-and-a-half years, two-and-a-half of those years were spent serving overseas. On Aug. 12, 1946, Leonard married Agnes Macheledt in her home town of Fairfax, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. The couple owned King Koin Laundry Mat and Leonard worked for the Coca-Cola Company for over 40 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagles and the VFW. Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching western and police shows on TV. Leonard also loved food, especially dessert. He also loved to play with and spend time with his six grandchildren.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Agnes Dietz of Sleepy Eye; son, Robert Dietz of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Alice and husband Mike Chernich of Las Vegas, Nev., Diann and husband Brian Wiederich of Le Sueur, and Mary and husband Dennis Macho of Bloomington; grandchildren, Celena, Connor and KaSondra Wiederich, and Justin, Jennifer and Brandon Macho; brothers, Joseph Dietz of Sleepy Eye and Art Dietz of Markesan, Wisc.; and sister, Agnes Modaht of La Crosse, Wisc. He was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Agnes; baby sister, Mary; and brothers, Ray Dietz and Edward Dietz.
Casket bearers were Dennis Macho, Dick Ginn, Mike Chernich, Brian Wiederich, Mike Wiederich and Randy Wiederich.

Michael Ladd
Michael Ladd, 45 of Watertown, S.D., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, May 20, 2002 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Funeral services were held Friday at the American Reformed Church of Luverne, with interment in Luverne Memory Gardens Cemetery in Luverne.
Mike was born Oct. 31, 1956, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Watson and Mary (Remus) Ladd. He grew up in Sleepy Eye, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1976. His education continued at Wadena Vocational Technical College in Wadena, graduating in 1978. Mike was first employed in Marshall. In 1980, he began working for the Eagles Club in Worthington as manager. Mike married Gracia Shelton on July 10, 1981 in Worthington. The couple moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. in 1982, and returned to Minnesota in 1983. They then made Luverne their home. Mike worked for IBP of Luverne for the next 13 years. He then went to work for Christensen Family Farms by Garretson, S.D. until January of 2001, when Mike and Gracia moved to Watertown, S.D., where Mike worked for Econo Food. In his spare time, Mike umpired legion baseball. He enjoyed sports, his favorites were baseball, football and wrestling. Most of all, Mike loved his wife and family, especially his grandchildren.
Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Gracia Ladd of Watertown, S.D.; son, Dustin Ladd of Watertown, S.D.; daughters, Amber Shelton-Ladd and Angie Shelton-Ladd, both of Luverne; and Amanda Conklin of Hatfield; grandchildren, Donovan Conklin, Tessa Aning and Selena Wright; brothers, George and wife Bobbie Ladd of Buffalo, Nelson and wife Cindy Ladd of Belle Plaine, Pat Ladd of Watertown, S.D., Jim and wife Sheri Ladd of Luverne, and John and wife Barb Ladd of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Sister Shirley Ladd of Waukesha, Wisc., Mary and husband Kevin Aaker of Luverne, Jackie and husband Pat Krzmarzick of Sleepy Eye, and Vickie and husband Bob Simon of Sleepy Eye; also many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents.

Veronica Weicherding
Veronica Weicherding, 92, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center, New Ulm. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., and Thursday, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.
Veronica was born on Dec. 9, 1909, in rural Sleepy Eye, the daughter of John and Frances (Kuelbs) Steffl. She lived with her parents on a farm near Sleepy Eye and attended Rural School District #17, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1927. She attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. for two years where she majored in music. Veronica married Victor P. Weicherding on Jan. 30, 1929, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. She made Sleepy Eye her home all her life. She was employed for many years at the McKnight Store and the Davis Store. Veronica was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers and the CCW. Veronica was an avid reader, sewer and enjoyed growing flowers. She also had a great love of music, and enjoyed playing the organ and violin.
Veronica is survived by her children, LaDonna and Vernard Domeier of Sleepy Eye, Jerome and Patricia Weicherding of Sleepy Eye and Shirley Ann and Leonard Staupe of Morristown; 20 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Agnes Weicherding of Worthington, Elizabeth Haeney of Austin, Vi Steffl of Neligh, Neb., and Bess Schottenbauer of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor in 1991; sisters, Margaret Rusch, Agnes Soukup, and Frances Weicherding; and brothers, Sylvester, Matthew, Harold and Leo.
Casket bearers were Dean Domeier, Daniel Domeier, Scott Staupe, Lonnie Staupe, Tim Weicherding and Terry Weicherding.

Merlin "Bud" Burghart
Merlin "Bud" Ross Burghart, 81, Dodge Center, and formerly of Fairfax and rural Sleepy Eye, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center. Funeral services were held Monday, at Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax with interment in Ft. Ridgely Cemetery in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County.
Bud was born April 30, 1921, in Renville County, the son of Byron and Mamie (Cummings) Burghart. He attended school in rural Renville County and then public schools in Fairfax and also Billings, Mont. Bud graduated from Fairfax High School in 1939. He served in the Medical Corp of the U.S. Army for three years from 1942-1945, where he attained the rank of T4 sergeant. On May 9, 1946, Bud was united in marriage with Dorothy Kallemeyn. They made their home in Brown County. During his lifetime, Bud farmed and did construction work. When he retired from farming and construction, he was employed by Brown County, 1962-1972, working with mentally retarded people. Bud was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Morgan. He was also a member of the Fairfax V.F.W. Post #8459 and the Mayflower Country Club. He loved spending time with his family and he also enjoyed golf, trapping, hunting and fishing. In 1993, Bud was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. When he needed assistance with daily care, he entered the Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center, in March of 1994.
Bud is survived by his wife, Dorothy Burghart of Little Rock, Ark.; son, Mark Burghart and wife Debbie of Little Rock, Ark.; daughter, Marybeth and her husband Barry Mosier of Tanzania, East Africa; grandchildren, Laura (Mosier) Abbott of Lincoln, Nebr., Daniel Burghart of Lincoln, Nebr., Keith, Jared and April Mosier of Tanzania, East Africa and Becky Burghart of Little Rock, Ark.; sister, Evelyn Billing of Jordon, Mont.; and many nieces; nephews; in-laws; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Mamie Burghart; sons, Kenneth Burghart at age 12 and Bruce and Rodney Burghart in infancy; and a sister, Hazel Kerr.

Wallace "Wally" R. Pedersen
Wallace "Wally" Raynard Pedersen, 83, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Buffalo Hospital in Buffalo. Funeral services were held Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Veterans Memorial Garden Section, Sleepy Eye. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Wally was born March 4, 1919, in Hope, N.D., the son of Fred and Marie (Madsen) Pedersen. He was raised in Daisey, N.D., and later attended Valley City State Teachers College in Valley City, N.D. Wally served in the United States Navy for four years during WW II. Wally married Helen Weidenhoeft in 1951, at St. Peter. He worked for Minnegasco in Sleepy Eye as a serviceman for 33 years. Wally married Dorothy Olson on Oct. 5, 1973 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Wally was a gifted athlete, playing baseball for the St. Peter Saints in the Western Minnie League. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Sleepy Eye VFW and American Legion, and the Sleepy Eye Gold Club. Wally enjoyed reading western books, country music, bowling, shaking dice at Schultz's and especially spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Wally is survived by his wife, Dorothy Pedersen of Sleepy Eye; son, Wade and wife Susie Pedersen of Sleepy Eye; step-sons, Dillon and wife Josie Olson of Clear Lake, Iowa, Donnie and wife Connie Olson of Andover, and Dennis and wife Diane Olson of Maple Lake; sisters, Phyllis Undseth of Orlando Fla., and Marilyn and husband Lyle Dahl of Coon Rapids; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Gordon, James and Clifford.
Casket bearers were Matthew Pedersen, Lee Olson, Mike Olson, Ryan Olson, Bobby Olson, Jeremiah Olson and Steven Olson. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Horne, Bob Appel, Richard Callanan, Ivan Sandman, Herm Sellner and Bob Novotny.

Richard Thomas Addy
Richard Thomas Addy, 80, Osceola, died June 19, 2002, at his home. A private ceremony will be held at a later date, with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Osceola, Wis. Memorials are preferred to University of Wisconsin, River Falls Foundation, in the name of Marian Addy Popov, 410 S. Third St., River Falls, WI 54022.
Richard was born Jan. 31, 1922, to Caroline (Herreman) and Percy Rowe Addy. He attended school in Chicago, Ill., and Sleepy Eye, and later the University of Minnesota. Richard earned a bachelor of science degree in political science. After completing the Army Specialized Training Program, Richard entered the United States Navy and served on both coasts in WWII. He completed his doctor of dentistry degree in 1948, and wed Mildred Priscilla Ouren on June 14, 1948. Dr. Addy's dental practice in Osceola, was interrupted in 1952, when he was recalled to serve at Kadena AFB in Okinawa during the Korean Conflict. Though he was the lone dentist in the Osceola area for many years, he continued to serve in the Wisconsin National Guard and Hospital Evacuation Unit. Richard was an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts, the U Methodist Church, Mt. Hope Cemetery president and Osceola Main Street Association. He enjoyed trout fishing, Canada lake fishing, golf and deer hunting. In the United States Army Reserve, he evaluated dental sites yearly, until retirement at the rank of Colonel after serving 38 years in the military.
Richard is survived by his wife, Millie; sons, Daniel and wife Michelle of Portland, Ore., and Michael and wife Nancy of Minneapolis; and grandchildren, Maren and Laura. He was preceded in death by his daughters, Louise in 1949, and Marian Addy Popov in 1981.

Alfred J. Brey
Alfred J. Brey, Hutchinson, formerly of New Ulm, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at the Burns Manor in Hutchinson. Funeral services were held Friday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Alfred was born Aug. 13, 1907, in Nicollet County, to Wolfgang and Frances (Gruber) Brey. He married Agnes Gleisner on Oct. 4, 1938, at St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County. After marriage, the couple farmed various farms in Nicollet County. They moved to a farm in Lafayette Township in 1951, and farmed there until retiring. Alfred became a resident of Burns Manor in 1996. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Alfred enjoyed playing cards and restoring antique furniture.
Alfred is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marian and Larry Krebs of Hutchinson; sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Dorothy Brey of Sleepy Eye and Hilarian and Diane Brey of New Ulm; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Savera Brey of New Ulm; and brother-in-law, Norbert Gleisner of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Agnes Brey on Dec. 29, 1997; brothers, Frank and Harold Brey; sisters, Annie Hoffman, Gisella Wendinger, Bertha Brey, Apolonia Beranek and Adelia Rueckert.

Cyrilla B. Hurley
Cyrilla B. (Cy) Hurley, age 64, of rural Sunburg, died Tuesday, July 2, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Willmar. Private internment will be held at a later date. Peterson Brothers Funeral Home of Willmar handled the arrangements.
Cy was born April 21, 1938, near Comfrey, the daughter of Mary T. (Mathiowetz) and Valentine R. Poss. She attended rural schools and graduated from St. James High School. On May 2, 1959, Cy married Darrell (Joe) Hurley at St. James Catholic Church. In February of 1969, the couple moved to Granite Falls, where for many years, she was employed by the local school. Following their retirement in 1994, Cy and Joe moved to a lake home on Norway Lake. Until her illness, Cy worked for Rambow, Inc. of New London.
Cy is survived by her husband, Joe; daughters, LaNaye and husband Keith Hennen of Clarkfield, Laurie and husband Steve Bednarek of Glencoe, and Lynn and husband Bruce Flaata of Granite Falls; son, Dan Hurley of Bismarck, N.D.; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; brother, Roger and wife Ann Poss of New Ulm; and sister Leola Poss of St. Louis Park. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
