Arvid "Sammy" Trebesch
Arvid "Sammy" Trebesch, 68, Sleepy Eye, died July 1, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were held Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, New Ulm.
Sammy was born July 26, 1933, in Willmar, to Sam and Rose (Fiemeyer) Trebesch, and grew up in Sleepy Eye, where he attended St. John's Lutheran School. Sammy farmed near Sleepy Eye for a few years, and later worked at Farmers Elevator in Sleepy Eye. He also worked at Miller Sellner Implement, Sleepy Eye, for 17 years as a truck driver. Sammy continued to make his home on his farm near Sleepy Eye. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, mowing lawn, being outdoors, having coffee with friends and spending time with friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews.
Sammy is survived by his brothers, Carroll Trebesch of Sleepy Eye, Leo and wife Barbara Lindig of St. Paul, and Donald and wife Barbara Lindig of St. Paul; sister, Jean and husband Lowell Swenson of Isle; birth mother, Aileen Wigton of Redfeld, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Casket bearers were Carolyn Trebesch, Cindy Trebesch, Crystal Trebesch, Harold Trebesch and Carissa Trebesch.

LuVerne P. Duscher
LuVerne P. Duscher, 77, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 12, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place Thursday, July 11, 4-7 p.m., and Friday, July 12, 7:30-9:30 a.m., at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a parish prayer service at 4 p.m. and a Christian Mother's rosary at 6 p.m., both at the funeral home on Thursday.
LuVerne Duscher was born July 3, 1925, to Hugo and Elsie Otto, at Three Lakes Township. She grew up on a farm and attended school in Wabasso. After her junior year, LuVerne transferred to Morgan, where she finished her high school education. On April 24, 1946, LuVerne married James Duscher at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. The couple began their life together in Redwood Falls before moving to several different places, including Sleepy Eye. They moved back to Sleepy Eye in 1989, where they spent their retirement years. LuVerne worked as a housewife and waitress the majority of her life, including the four years she spent at the Orchid Inn in Sleepy Eye. LuVerne was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church as well as being a Christian Mother. She enjoyed being a homemaker and was an excellent baker and cook. She also loved to camp with her family and friends.
LuVerne is survived by her husband, James Duscher of Sleepy Eye; children, Patty and husband Doyle Sellner of Sleepy Eye, Sr. Marya Duscher of Jonesboro, Ark., Barb Mariner and husband Roger Holmes of Rosemount, Joleen and husband Rick Krueger of Hutchinson, and Ron and wife Vicki Duscher of Faribault; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Eunice Martinsen of Hector, Lois and Don Zimmermann of Lamberton, and Leon and Maxine Otto of Redwood Falls; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Otto of St. James. LuVerne was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Lori Duscher and Linda Reineke; brother, Norman Otto and brother-in-law, Leonard Martensen.
Casket bearers were Steve Otto, Merland Otto, Mike Otto, Kevin Zimmermann, Harold Heller and Marlin Berg.

Jane Wendt
Jane Wendt, 84, Mankato, formerly of the New Ulm and Sleepy Eye area, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at the Oaklawn Nursing Home in Mankato. Funeral services were held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with interment in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Springfield.
Jane was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Athens Township, Isanti County, to Harry and Alma (Norelius) Warneke. On Aug. 18, 1939, she married Clarence Wendt in Anoka. After marriage, they lived and farmed Clarence's family farm until 1943, when they moved to a farm near Sleepy Eye. In 1983, the couple retired and moved to New Ulm. Jane was a volunteer for the Treasure Haus in New Ulm, and the past auxiliary president for DMLC. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm and a past member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.
Jane is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Susan Manoogian of Tacoma, Wash., Linda and Robert Travis of Prairie Du Chein, Wis., and Sara Moldenhauer of Milwaukee, Wis.; sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Sandy Wendt of Stillwater, Roger and Dianne Wendt of Phoenix, Ariz., and Peter and Pamela Wendt of Mankato; 14 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Marvin Olson of Isanti; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Lucille Warneke of Elk River, Tom and Doris Warneke of Harris, and Owen Warneke of Plymouth; and brother-in-law, Harold Wendt of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence Wendt on May 13, 1999; sons-in-law, David Manoogian and Glen Moldenhauer; granddaughter, Anne Moldenhauer; sister, Mary Dale; brother, Roger Warneke; and sister-in-law, Lee Warneke.

Selina Peterson
Selina Jane Myra Peterson, 74, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 25, at 10 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will take place at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Selina was born April 21, 1928, in Kinloss Township, Walsh County, N.D., to George and Anna (Nygard) Myra. She grew up and attended school in Fairdale, N.D., where she graduated in 1946. She attended Interstate Business College in Fargo and worked at various jobs. On Nov. 14, 1948, Selina married Leslie John Peterson. Their ceremony was held at Aadalen Lutheran Church near Fairdale, where she had also been baptized and confirmed by the same pastor. Both continued to work in Fargo until they moved to Fairdale in 1954, to work the Myra farm. In 1959, Selina and Leslie moved to the Peterson homestead where they continue to farm. Selina was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, serving with her circle, greeting and cheerfully serving wherever needed. She was also involved as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of Norway-Fargo, the Brown County Fair Board and served as a 4-H adult leader. Selina enjoyed sewing, gardening, needlework, trips to Norway and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed helping others in her job as a County Home Health Aid. She will long be remembered by many for the 21 years she spent as a Title I Aide in the Sleepy Eye Public Elementary School.
Selina is survived by her husband, Leslie of Sleepy Eye; children, David and wife Cheryl Peterson of St. Peter, Scott and wife Linda Peterson of Sleepy Eye, Dean and wife Karen Peterson of Fargo, and Jane and husband Tom Osowski of Brookings, S.D.; sisters, Leola Olson of Fargo, N.D., Geneve Schultz of Redmond, Wash., and Eva and husband Charles Hawk of Strongsville, Ohio; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, four-year-old Mark Steven in 1962; her parents; and an infant brother, Edsel.
Casket bearers were Mark Rasmussen, Gerald Lux, Clayton Peterson, James Peterson, Hans DuBois and Dennis Dittbenner. Honorary casket bearers were Elizabeth Peterson, Michael Peterson, Daniel Peterson, Gavin Osowski, Jenna Peterson, Jared Peterson and Hannah Osowski.

Wilbert Harry Quiram
Wilbert Harry Quiram, 80, Mountain Lake, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton. Funeral services were held Friday at New Life Assembly of God Church in Springfield, with interment in Springfield City Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Wilbert was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Cottonwood County, to Albert and Lilly Quiram. He attended country school in Cottonwood County and later helped on the family farm. Wilbert has worked near Jeffers as a farm hand, at Butterfield Foods in Butterfield, and at Sanborn Manufacturing in Springfield. He has lived in Springfield, Jeffers and most recently, in Mountain Lake, before entering Valley View Manor in Lamberton. Wilbert enjoyed John Deere tractors, dogs and cats, old cars, tinkering with vehicles, gardening, polka music, watching Band Wagon on TV, and spending time with his family.
Wilbert is survived by his sons, Jerry and wife Debbie Quiram of Nicollet, and Albert and wife Sherry Quiram of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Mary Ann and husband Cory Wagner of Mankato; grandchildren, A.J. Quiram and Jenny Quiram; sister-in-law, Renata and husband Lawrence Middleton of Springfield; brother-in-law, Gordon Hauth of Springfield; niece, Evelyn and husband Bob Ysker of Windom; and nephew, Wallace Trapp of Windom. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1987; granddaughter, Jennifer Quiram; brother, Edward Quiram; sister, Alma Trapp; brother-in-law, Royal Hauth; and sister-in-law, Irene Fromm.
Casket bearers were Allen Middleton, Roger Hauth, Jerry Hauth, Wallace Trapp, Bob Ysker, and Reynold Dittbenner. Honorary casket bearers were Dan Wagner and David Lindscheid.

Steven John Welter
Steven John Welter, 59, Morgan, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Gettysburg Medical Center in Gettysburg, S.D. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan, with interment in the church cemetery. Redwood Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Steven was born Sept. 8, 1942, on the family farm in Morgan Township, Redwood County, to Aloys and Phyllis (Pohl) Welter. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan, and attended St. Michael's Catholic School and Morgan High School, graduating in 1961. On Oct. 10, 1970, Steven was united in marriage to Virginia Krueger at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Steven worked for Welter Woodworking in Morgan, Hose Ace Hardware in Sleepy Eye, and with Russ Beert for a number of years before starting his own construction company. Steven served in the National Guard, and was a member of the Clements American Legion. He served on the Morgan City Council for many years. Steve was a life-long member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Aid. Fishing and hunting were among his favorite activities.
Seven is survived by his wife Virginia; son, Steven of Morgan; granddaughter, Kendra; brothers and sisters, Art of Thief River Falls, Joe and wife Jan of Maple Grove, Mary and Rick Krueger of Hutchinson, Dennis and Vicki of Shakopee, Ron of Cold Spring, Helen Reynolds of Hutchinson, Mark and wife Janet of Morgan, Pat and wife Louise Bestick of Hutchinson, John of Morgan, Mike of Cosmos, Dorothy and husband Stan Prahl of Hutchinson, and Sharon Welter of Shakopee; 24 nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Leo Krueger.
Honorary casket bearers were Rod Harmon, Jack Heiling, Joe Heiling, LeRoy Bloemke, Gary Klatz and Russ Beert. Casket bearers were Mark Welter, John Welter, Mike Welter, Dennis Welter, Art Welter, Joe Welter and Ron Welter.

Lorraine D. Klein
Lorraine D. Klein, 72, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield, where she had made her home for the last couple of years. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Lorraine was born May 24, 1930, in Clements, the daughter of Theodore and Ella (Schultz) Jacoby. She grew up and attended school in Clements. She later attended Good Council in Mankato, where she graduated from high school. Lorraine married Thomas "T.J." Klein on July 9, 1952, in Clements. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye. Lorraine was the local Avon representative and also worked for Roberts Brothers Ready Mix, First Security Bank and Hose Ace Hardware. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the Sleepy Eye Gold Club. Lorraine enjoyed going to northern Minnesota to the lake, traveling to Canada, gardening and embroidering.
Lorraine is survived by her sons, Gregory of Newton, Kans., Theodore and wife Lynn of Duluth, and Stephen of Plymouth; eight grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Pietig of Redwood Falls, and Arlien and husband Willard Miller of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas in 1999; and brother-in-law, Ralph Pietig.

Robert "Bob" Current
Robert Leslie "Bob" Current, 91, Redwood Falls, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Funeral services were held Friday at United Methodist Church in Redwood Falls, with interment in Current Cemetery, Home Township, Brown County.
Robert was born Dec. 27, 1910, in Home Township, Brown County, the son of Roy and Nellie (Case) Current. He married Isabel Marie Lasby on July 26, 1939. Robert attended Teachers College in Illinois for one year. He learned to fly in a cornfield on his father's farm in the late 1920s and did barnstorm flying for a number of years. Robert took pilots training as a co-pilot with TWA in Kansas City in 1939, and then became a pilot with Continental Airlines in the summer of 1940, in Denver, Colo. He moved to Los Angeles in 1959. Bob flew MATS contract overseas in the late 1960s and was in and out of the South Pacific during those years. He started a Boy Scout troop in the Philippines as well as other places in the Pacific area during that time. Robert was active in the Boy Scouts as a leader from 1950 to around 1990 when his last son became an Eagle Scout. All three of his sons were Eagle Scouts and Order of the Arrow. The Boy Scouts awarded him the Silver Beaver for his work in scouting. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason.
Robert moved to Minnesota when he retired and his last two sons grew up in Redwood Falls, where he lived out the rest of his life. In Redwood Falls, Robert was on the airport commission and served three terms as president and remained as the main authority on aviation regulations for the board. Robert was also a janitor at Methodist Church for five years and worked at Wal-Mart for over five years.
Robert is survived by his wife, Isabel of Redwood Falls; sons, Reece and wife Suzanne of San Jose, Calif., Bryce of Redwood City, Calif., and Robroy of Farmington; daughters, Elizabeth and husband Denis Cogswell of Palo Alto, Calif.; and Lorraine and husband Robert E. Wilson of Fremont, Calif.; grandchildren, Blaine Current, Robert Current, James Current, Matthew Cogswell and Casey Wilson, Marie Cogswell Buhntz, Monica Current, Margaret Wilson and Nina Current. Robert was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene; and sisters, Hazel Rogers and Margaret Johnson.

Catherine "Cathy" Gloe
Catherine "Cathy" Gloe, 44, Pierre, S.D., died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at her home. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre, S.D.
Cathy was born Oct. 20, 1957, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Alfred and Jean (Witt) Fischer. She grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1976. She received her associate degree from the University of South Dakota. Cathy has lived in Pierre the last 18 years. She married Monty Gloe on April 12, 1980, in Sioux Falls. Cathy had the pleasure of being home with her children before working for the State Highway Patrol for the past four years. She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, taught CCD, ran a day care and was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Sioux Falls.
Cathy is survived by her husband, Monty Gloe of Pierre; sons, Willie and Ben; daughters, Sarah and Susie, all of Pierre; mother, Jean Fischer of Sioux Falls; brothers, Father John Fischer of Yankton, S.D., Mike and wife Jill Fischer of Atlanta, Ga., and Charles Fischer of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; In-laws, Fritz and Bonnie Gloe of Crooks, S.D., brothers-in-law, Terry Gloe of Sioux Falls, Jesse and wife Michelle Gloe of Rapid City; sisters-in-law, Marty and husband Eddie Goddard of Las Vegas, Nev., and Cindy and husband Gerald Hargrave of Houston, Tex. She was preceded in death by her father, Alfred Fischer.

Elwood "Woody" Habeger
Elwood "Woody" Habeger, 88, Winnebago, died Aug. 3, 2002, at St. Luke's Nursing Home in Blue Earth. Memorial services were held Wednesday at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Winnebago with interment in Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Memorials are preferred to Alzheimer's Research Fund, Foundation Fighting Blindness or to the donor's choice. Woodland Hills Funeral Home of Mankato handled the arrangements.
Elwood was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Ideal, S.D., to Edward G. and Louisa E. (Moser) Habeger. He graduated from Ideal High School and after working on the family farm for five years, he moved to Minnesota and attended Mankato Teachers College. Elwood served in the United States Navy as an aircraft maintenance inspector. He worked for eight years at the Mankato Airport as a foreman and aircraft inspector. On Oct. 13, 1940, Elwood married Lucille Zuhlsdorf in Mankato. In 1952, the couple moved to Garden City, where Elwood set up his own business in insurance and real estate. They later moved to Winnebago where they owned and operated Habeger Insurance and Real Estate until retiring in 1979. Woody worked with the DNR on lake projects and was a DNR firearm instructor for 30 years. In 1996, he was inducted into the Winnebago Hall of Fame. Woody also enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and bowling. He was a member of American Legion Post #82 in Winnebago, past president of Winnebago Kiwanis Club, Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Winnebago and a former officer of the Winnebago Sportsman's Club.
Woody is survived by his wife, Lucille; sons, Edward of Anchorage, Alaska, and Wesley and wife Paula of Duluth; daughters, Sandy and husband Arlo Jaeger of Garden City, and Carol and husband Mike Rollings of Dalton, Nebr.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Esther Bokrosh of Greeley, Colo., and Etheline and husband Charles Ley of Mankato; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson; two granddaughters; one great-grandson and one brother.

Fred P. Riebel
Fred P. Riebel, 73, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. Funeral services are Thursday, Aug. 15, noon, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:30 a.m. to noon, prior to the service. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Fred was born Nov. 26, 1927, in Prairieville Township, Brown County, the son of John and Emma (Weber) Riebel. He grew up and attended St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye. Fred graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1946. Following his graduation, Fred moved to East St. Louis, Ill., where he apprenticed and worked as an electrician until the early 60s. He moved to the Twin Cities area where he worked as a master electrician until he retired in 1989. Fred later moved to Long Lake, where he lived on a small hobby farm and raised cattle and other livestock. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Catholic Aid Association, Knights of Columbus, Electrical Workers Union (IBEW). Fred was an avid deer and pheasant hunter with his faithful companion, Smokie. He also loved reading Zane Grey novels.
Fred is survived by his sister, Pauline "Polly" and husband John Guemmer of Apple Valley; sisters-in-law, Barbara Riebel of Bloomington, and Audrey Riebel of Burnsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles and Neil; and nephew, Daniel Riebel.
