Francis F. Hillesheim
Francis F. Hillesheim, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Divine Providence Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Francis was born May 7, 1931, to Hubert and Katherine (Schunk) Hillesheim in Leavenworth. On Nov. 28, 1950, Francis entered the U.S. Armed Forces and served in the Korean War, where he received a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged from service on Nov. 27, 1953. Francis married Marie Giammetta in New Jersey and spent 38 years there and they had four children. In 1985, Marie died and Francis decided to move back to his "home town." Francis enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting and being with his friends. He was always a loving father and grandfather.
Francis is survived by his children, Rebecca and husband Steve Spallone on Toms River, N.J., Nadine and husband Dale Creamer of Ramsey, N.J., Darcy and husband Andy Molden of Klossner and Drew Hillesheim of East Rutherford, N.J.; grandchildren, Sergio, Nicole, Jason, Samantha, Bryan, Blake, Jacob and Nicholas; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Sergio IV; brothers and sisters, Juliet and husband Eldor Sprenger of Winthrop, Jerome Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, Gilbert and wife Janet Hillesheim of New Ulm, Lyle and wife Betty Hillesheim of Gaylord, Gildard and wife Lois Hillesheim of St. Peter, Rose and husband Glen Zollner of New Ulm, Ruth Prokosch of New Ulm, Kathy and husband Gene Fegie of Hector, Annette and husband Art Helget of Hanska, Joe and wife Alice Hillesheim of Leavenworth, Mary and husband Dennis Stadick of New Ulm and Steve and wife Sandy Hillesheim of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie; brother, Hubert Hillesheim and sister, Regina Hillesheim.
Casket bearers were Kyle Stadick, Scott Hillesheim, Leon Hillesheim, Keith Block, Wade Hillesheim and Tim Hillesheim.

Lonnie Lee Brey
Lonnie Lee Brey, 40, Chaska, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at his parent's home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Lonnie was born March 9, 1962, in New Ulm, the son of Leon and Dorothy (Gilman) Brey. He grew up and attended Sleepy Eye Public School, where he graduated in 1980. Lonnie currently resided in Chaska, where he was employed as shipping and receiving administrator for Parker Hannifin Corporation. He enjoyed snowmobiling, golf and other sports.
Lonnie is survived by his parents, Leon and Dorothy Brey of Sleepy Eye; sister, LuAnn and husband John Haas of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Butch and wife Nancy Brey of St. Peter, Larry and wife Janet Brey of Shelby, N.C., and Lance and wife Shannon Brey of Raymond. He is also survived by his nieces, Nichole, Kaitlyn and Mackenzie Brey and Kalyn Haas, and special friends, Shelley, Vanessa, Cara and Ritchie, all of Chaska. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alfred and Agnes Brey and Louis and Marguerite Gilman.

Ronald J. Hornick
Ronald J. Hornick, 57, Comfrey, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Madelia Community Hospital, Madelia. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Pilgrim Funeral Home of Madelia handled the arrangements.
Ronald grew up in Comfrey and graduated from high school there in 1963. He attended South Central Technical College for accounting. He married Cheryl Weicherding on May 20, 1967, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They lived in St. James and Ronald worked for Scherr Tumico Company for a time before moving to Arlington Heights, Ill., where he worked for Rank Precision Industries. In 1978, they returned to Minnesota and moved to Madelia. He worked for periods at Malmgren Implement, St. James and Van Den Bergh Foods, Madelia and was currently working for Mico Company in North Mankato. Ronald was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia and the German Bohemian Society in New Ulm. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
Ronald is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Michelle and husband Glen Ebeling of Mankato; sons, Bryon and Jason, both of N. Mankato; grandchildren, Evan and Madeline; and sister, Beatta and husband Roland Kunz of Mapleton. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Christian Paulsen, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey.
Christian was born April 2, 1919, in Evan, the son of Lars and Kristen (Ostergaard) Paulsen. He grew up and attended school in Evan. In 1937, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp. for one year. He and his brother Clifford went to Petoskey to work for a cousin in the veterinary business. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, and served in World War II. On Jan. 10, 1944, Christian married Marie Weber, from Petoskey, in Evan. After the war, he returned to Petoskey to work. In 1952, he was called back for the Korean War. Christian then returned to Petoskey and worked on road construction until his retirement in 1984. He was a Boy Scout Leader, and a member of Ope000rating Engineers for 35 years. He and his wife were also foster parents for several years.
Christian is survived by two daughters; one son; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; brother, Paul Paulson; sisters, Anna Petermann of Evan, Pauline Schackel of Evan, and Marie Pennia of Canton, Mich.; and sister-in-law, Betty Paulsen of Kingston, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1996; his parents; and brother, Cliff in 1999.

Margaret Lola Harned, 87, of Laneville, Texas, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, June 8, 2001, in Laneville Texas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary said at 10 a.m. at the church.
Margaret Lola Harned was born Dec. 23, 1913, in Home Township, Brown County, the daughter of John and Ida (Wagner) Madory. She grew up and attended school in Home Township. Margaret married Frank Harned in Akron, Ohio, where they managed the Firestone Supper Club. The couple moved to Redwood Falls and owned and operated the Mint Cafe. Margaret moved to Sleepy Eye in 1978, after Frank's death. Margaret was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, Christian Mothers, Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion and VFW. She enjoyed her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, visiting with many good friends and listening to old time music.
Margaret is survived by her son, John and wife Vicki Harned of Laneville, Texas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcella Balko of Redwood Falls, Irene and husband Granny Discher of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Verena Bruckbauer of Sleepy Eye, and Flo Isackson of St. Paul; special friend, Evie Fasnacht of Mankato; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank in 1976; sister, Celestine Hauser; brothers, Cornelius Madory and Lyle Madory; and brothers-in-law, Albert Balko and Willard Hauser.

Esther M. Rasmusen, 94, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 15, 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Old Westbrook Lutheran Cemetery in Westbrook. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, at Sturm Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Esther was born Aug. 9, 1906, in Luverne, Iowa, the daughter of William and Hattie (Krueger) Thake. She moved with her family to the Jeffers area in 1912, where she grew up and graduated from Windom High School in 1924. In 1925, she completed her Normal School for Teachers Training, and she taught in the Cottonwood County Schools for several years. Esther married Ole W. Rasmusen on May 8, 1929, at the Trinity Lutheran Church Parsonage in Westbrook. The couple made their home in the Westbrook, Walnut Grove and Tracy areas and later moved into Tracy in 1965. They moved to Sleepy Eye in 1987. Esther also worked for the Lyon County Assessors Office in Marshall for 13 years. She has made her home at the Sleepy Eye Care Center since 1999. Esther was an active member of the Lutheran Church and other community organizations.
Esther is survived by two daughters, Myrna and husband Gail Smith of Owatonna, and Marlys and husband David Olstad of Hanska; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ole in April, 1994; sister, Florence Thake; brothers, Albert and Harold Thake; and a great-grandson, Isaac Glasser.
Casket bearers were Martin Smith, Ken Olstad, David McCord, Bill Conway, Ronald Pederson and Ivan Pederson.

Arthur Bernloehr, 91, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Luther Memorial Home in Madelia. Services were held Monday, June 18, at Albion Lutheran Church, St. James, with interment in Albion Lutheran Cemetery.
Arthur was born June 19, 1909, the son of Charles and Anna (Tande) Bernloehr, on the family homestead in Albin Township, Brown County. He attended country school, District 76, after which he returned home to farm with his father. On Sept. 25, 1937, Arthur married Margaret Rolstad at the Lake Hanska Parsonage. The couple continued to farm the family homestead until after the tornado in 1998. They moved to Sleepy Eye, and in April, 2001, both Art and Margaret became residents at Luther Memorial Home in Madelia. Arthur was a lifetime member of Albion Lutheran Church, and enjoyed bowling, fishing, woodcraft, handiwork, working on old cars, riding his 4-wheeler, his "coffee breaks," spending time with his family and visiting with neighbors.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Margaret of Madelia; sons, Dennis Bernloehr of Bloomington and Darrel and wife Bonnie Bernloehr of Mankato; daughter, Jean and husband Leon Hudson of Two Harbors, Audrey and husband Dick Zinniel of Sleepy Eye, and Cindy and husband John Hughes of Alexandria; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Ernest and wife Irene Bernloehr of St. James; and sister, Sylvia and husband Bud Beaver of Tyler. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Ruth; brothers, Johnny and Henry; and three sisters, Grace, Cora and Ellen.
Casket bearers were Todd Bernloehr, Brian Bernloehr, Tim Bernloehr, Jason Bernloehr, Brad Zinniel, Jody Sorlien, Kevin Hudson, Scott Hudson, Mark Hudson and Jeff Zinniel. Honorary casket bearers were Troy Zinniel, Tony Bernloehr, Kristin Jensen, Ryan Hughes and Eric Hughes.

Lawrence "Bud" Schwint, 77, Long Prairie, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, 1 p.m., at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sturm Funeral Home.
Lawrence "Bud" Schwint was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Eden Township, Brown County, to George and Katherine (Day) Schwint. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan. He was a farm laborer for many years, working in Western Minnesota. Bud then worked for 30 years at Armour Packing Company, South St. Paul, retiring in 1984, and moving to Long Prairie, where he lived ever since.
Bud is survived by his sister, Kathryn Pitzl of Hendricks; sisters-in-law, Irene Schwint, Redwood Falls, and Adeline Schwint, Long Prairie; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Louis, Maurice, Maynard and Allen Schwint; sister, Alice Wegner; and his parents.
Casket bearers are Richard, Lawrence, Russell and Roger Pitzl, George Schwint and James Wegner.

Jerald Dean Lupke, 62, St. James, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at St. James Health Services Hospital, St. James. Funeral services were held Friday, June 22, at First Lutheran Church, St. James with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery, St. James.
Jerald was born Aug. 8, 1938 to Gustav and Edna (Mausling) Lupke and grew up in rural South Branch Township. His early years on the farm formed his enduring love of the outdoors and nature. Jerry attended St. John's Lutheran in South Branch for eight years and was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of South Branch. He graduated from Truman High School in 1956 and went on to work for Sam's Electric as an apprentice and also for a local lumber yard. On June 1, 1964, he began working for United Parcel Service and was employed there for 35 years and eight months, retiring Jan. 31, 2000. He also farmed in South Branch Township for 13 years. On Oct. 8, 1960, he married Arlene Larson at First Lutheran Church in St. James. The couple had two children and raised them with strong family values. After retirement, Jerry enjoyed spending time with his family, and he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play hockey. Jerry was an active member of First Lutheran Church in St. James. He was a member of the Swinging Saints Square Dance Club and was serving as current president. He was also a member of the St. James Lion's Club and was resident of the local AAL Branch 4838. The hobbies he enjoyed were gardening, golfing, traveling, coin collecting, reading, playing cards and spending time with his family. Jerry was a "people person" who enjoyed his many customers on his route and had many friends.
Jerald is survived by his wife, Arlene; son, Troy and wife Shirley of Foreston; daughter, Tamara and husband David Palm of Sleepy Eye; five grandchildren, Kristi, Travis and Amanda Lupke, and Brandon and Lucas Palm; mother, Edna of Truman; sisters, Janis Olson of Truman, Carmen and husband Alyn Angus of Farmington, Arlys Hoffmeyer of Prior Lake, Cheryl and husband Ralph Otte of Eagan, and Deborah Hotzler of Lake Crystal; brother, Lyle and wife Sonja of Truman, sister-in-law Sue Lupke of Truman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Gustav, and one brother, Darrel.
Casket bearers were John Kulseth, Jim Olson, Chad Larson, Shane Flynn, Troy Lupke, Ryan Lupke and Todd Olson. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Panzen, Lawrence Ruhland and Reinhart Basil.

Florence Irene (Beckius) Finstad, 84, New Ulm, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at New Ulm Medical Center, New Ulm. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 21, at Albion Lutheran Church in rural St. James, with interment in the church cemetery.
Florence, daughter of Nick and Rose (Dearth) Beckius, was raised and attended school in Comfrey. Her marriage to Hjalmer Finstad took place on April 25, 1936, in Springfield. The couple farmed in Albin Township, Brown County for 60 years before retiring and later moving to Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Florence was an active member of the Albion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, crocheting and listening to baseball.
Florence is survived by daughters, Phyllis and husband Larry Johnson of Alexandria, and Colleen and husband Ron Kibbon of Hampton, Nebr.; sons, Dennis and wife Mary Anne of Jackson, Kenneth and wife Fay of Hayward, Wisc., Richard and wife Becky of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Howard and wife Sharon of St. James; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Odegard of St. James; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Beckius of Hanska, and Clarabelle Beckius of St. James. Florence was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hjalmer; brothers, Ray and Jack; and sister, Arlene.
Casket bearers were grandsons, Keith Finstad, Todd Johnson, Jeff Finstad, John Finstad, Charles Vakula and Matt Kibbon. Honorary casket bearers were grandchildren, Deb Anderson, Christine Norring, Scott Finstad, Steff Sawyer, Steve Sawyer, Jim Finstad, Molly Harris, Erik Vakula, Brad Finstad, Nick Finstad, Michaela Hume, Kristin Kibbon, Randy Kibbon, Sara Kibbon, and Alexis Kibbon.

Dorothy (Mrs. Les) Shellum, 71, of 526 N Garden in New Ulm, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery, New Ulm. Visitation will be from 4:30-8 p.m. Thursday, and from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Dorothy was born Dec. 15, 1929, in New Ulm, to Paul and Mary (Henge) Havemeier. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School in Courtland Township, Nicollet County and attended Nicollet High School in Nicollet. She married Lester Shellum June 17, 1948, at the Courtland Evangelical Lutheran Church in Courtland. After marriage, they lived in New Ulm for a year before moving to Fairmont, where they lived for 14 1/2 years. They then moved to Jackson where they lived for 28 years. Dorothy worked at the Jackson Hospital in Jackson as a Physical Therapy Assistant for 17 years. For over 30 years, she also had a home cake business. In 1992, they retired in New Ulm. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm and was active in the choir and church circle.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Lester Shellum of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Dave Kumm of Fairmont, and Cay and Jorge Gonzalez of Mexico City, Mexico; son and daughter-in-law, Curt and Jane Shellum of Rochester; grandchildren, Ryan Kumm, Chad Kumm, Braden Kumm, Megan Kumm and Nathan Kumm, Tom Shellum, Anne Shellum and Audrey Shellum Gonzalez; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Harris Buboltz of Hutchinson, Vercille and Dale Class of New Ulm, Burnell and Eddie Osberg of Courtland, and Burnett and Frank Pearse of New Ulm; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Imelda Havemeier of New Ulm, and Dennis and Bonnie Havemeier of Cokato; sisters-in-law, Margaret Havemeier of Lakeville and Lorna Havemeier of rural Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sharon Shellum in infancy; and brother, Clarence Havemeier, Paul Havemeier, Jr., and Jerome Havemeier.
