Ervin Carl Hopp
Ervin Carl Hopp, 83, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at GilMor Manor Nursing Home, Morgan. Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 6, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of services at the church.
Ervin was born April 14, 1918, to Anton and Olga (Steinhaus) Hopp, in Sherman Township, Redwood County. He attended country school in Sherman Township. Following his schooling, Ervin helped his parents on the family farm. Ervin helped area farmers with farm work until his retirement. He has lived in Sleepy Eye for the past thirty years. Ervin enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and helping his neighbors and friends.
Ervin is survived by his sister, Olga Buchholz of Fairfax; brother, Ervil and his wife Hildegard Hopp of Atwater; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Hopp of Litchfield; and Ruby Hopp of Gibbon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Esther Grundemann, Sophie Schwerzler, Viola Gilland and Sylvia Meyer; brothers, Harold, Herman, Francis, Arthur, Anton, Jr., Melvin, Herbert and Alvin in infancy.
Casket bearers are Joel Halvorson, Douglas Hopp, Kevin Hopp, Randy Lenzt, Matt Lux and Brian Roberts.

Sylvester "Syl" Louis Hornick
Sylvester "Syl" Louis Hornick, 87, Comfrey, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at his home in Mulligan Township, rural Comfrey. Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 3 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Comfrey, with interment in St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery, Springfield.
Syl was born May 8, 1914, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the son of Anton and Sophie (Meidl) Hornick. He attended District 70 country school in Mulligan Township. After his schooling, he did farm work in Brown County. He married Catherine Sophia Fecker on April 10, 1939, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. The couple lived in Sleepy Eye until 1941, then in the Darfur area until buying their farm in 1943. In 1950, Syl was Brown County Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. Syl enjoyed farming, gardening, his cats, Spitz dogs and chickens, fishing listening to Twins games and old time music, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.
Syl is survived by his daughter, Marcia Weber of Comfrey; grandsons, Mark Weber of Lakeville, Mike Weber of Comfrey, Keith Weber of Evan, and Kevin Weber of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Lucille Sellner of Sleepy Eye, and Celestine Soupir of Wimbledon, N.D. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Catherine; brothers, Bernard, Thomas, Clarence, Albert and Ambrose; and sister, Helen Mathiowetz.
Casket bearers were Clarence Hornick, Jr., Jerry Hornick, Robert Hornick, Alphonse Mathiowetz, James Sellner and David Soupir.

Hedwig Seifert
Hedwig Seifert, 105, formerly of New Ulm, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 5-6 p.m. at Divine Providence Community Chapel in Sleepy Eye. There will be a combined rosary starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, which will be followed by a parish prayer service at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Arrangements are being handled by Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Mary's Parish, the Way of the Cross, the Brown County Historical Society, the New Ulm Area Catholic Schools (NUACS), or to the Alexander Berghold Memorial.
Hedwig was born June 14, 1896, in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, to Rudolph and Mary (Huelskamp) Marti. She attended Holy Trinity Grade School in New Ulm, Good Counsel Academy in Mankato, and St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Chicago. On May 5, 1920, she married Raymond Henle at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. After his death, Hedwig married Dr. Otto J. Seifert on May 15, 1922, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm.
Hedwig was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, St. Mary's Catholic Aid Society, St. Monica's Society, American Legion Auxiliary, the Gold Star Mothers, a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross for 25 years, a charter member of the Loretto Hospital Auxiliary, the chairperson of the first coffee shop at the Loretto Hospital, the Catholic Daughters of America, the New Ulm Medical Center Auxiliary, the Junior Pioneers, the Turner Hall, Brown County Historical Society, and the Senior Citizens of New Ulm. She was a resident of Divine Providence Community Home since 1994.
Hedwig is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. James R. and Jane Seifert of New Ulm, and Dr. Richard and Carmen Seifert of Fargo, N.D.; daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Bernard Reichel of Santa Monica, Calif.; sister, Mrs. Bernice Manderfeld of Springfield; sister-in-law, Mrs. Myra Dempsey of New Ulm; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Henle, on April 4, 1921; her second husband, Dr. Otto J. Seifert, on Feb. 19, 1964; sons, Joseph Seifert on Jan. 9, 1929; and Captain Otto J. Seifert, Jr. on May 13, 1943; daughters, Muriel Seifert on Jan. 22, 1994, and Dorothy Savchuck on Oct. 22, 1998, her parents; brother, Ben, Alois, and Rudolph Marti; and sisters, Sister Rudolphis Marti and Linda (Mrs. Roy) Gordier.

Eugene "Gene" M. Fromm, 61, Sunnyvale, Calif., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at his home. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Eugene was born March 15, 1940, in Sleepy Eye, the son of John and Agnes (Neid) Fromm. He attended rural School District 60 and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye, in 1958. Gene was a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force, which included two tours of duty in Vietnam. He served his last duty and the pentagon, retiring in May of 1979 as a Senior Master Sergeant. Gene earned a masters degree at the University of Maryland. He was vice-president of human resources at Golden Bay Federal Credit Union in Sunnyvale, Calif. at the time of his death. Gene loved to travel. He traveled to all 50 states, plus many countries throughout the world. He enjoyed collecting koalas, researching family history and visiting family and friends.
Gene is survived by his mother, Agnes Fromm of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Ervin and wife Dignora of Sioux Falls, S.D., Ed and wife Kathy of Sleepy Eye, David and wife Janis of Eagle Lake, Cletus and wife Dawn of Owatonna, Michael and wife Gail of Claremont, Mark and wife Rolene of Eagle Lake, and Joel and wife Lois of New Ulm; sisters, Rose of Sleepy Eye, Doris and husband Leo Csukker of Fairfax, and Carol and husband Michael Whitney of Mankato; sister-in-law, Rosie Fromm of Sleepy Eye; many uncles and aunts and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John in 1964; sister, Joanne in 1972; brother, Jerome in 1991; and sister-in-law, Judy in 1971.

Howard Ernest Gluth, 80, Morgan, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at his home, following a battle with cancer. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Morgan, with interment in Morgan City Cemetery. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls handled the arrangements.
Howard, the son of Ernest and Margaret (Heckler) Gluth, was born Jan. 7, 1921 on the family farm in Eden Township, Brown County. He grew up in Eden Township and received his education from District #57 County School. On Dec. 15, 1943, Howard was united in marriage with Deloris Viola Rose at the United Methodist Parsonage in Morgan. Howard was raised on the family farm where he also farmed, raising grain and livestock, until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees. Howard enjoyed farming, gardening, refinishing furniture, going to auctions, and spending time with his family.
Howard is survived by his wife, Deloris Gluth of Morgan; children, Bob and wife Sue Gluth of New Ulm, and Jeanne and husband John Dallenbach of Morgan; grandchildren, Beth and husband Tim Chadderdon of LeCenter, Jenifer and husband Troy Kalis of Baxter, Rick and wife Melissa Dallenbach of Morgan, Joel and wife Jill Dallenbach of Owatonna, Shawana and husband Chad Kohls of Danube, Shannon and husband Ray Bartlett of Willmar and Kelly Dallenbach of Marshall; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah and Emily Chadderdon, Logan, Kalis, Drew and Dain Dallenbach, Jaden and Julia Dallenbach, Amanda, Amber and Jay Kohls, and Kaleb Bartlett; brother and sisters, Mary and husband Glen Leopold of Sanborn, Margaret Johnson of Tracy, Norma Gluth of Olivia, Denis and wife Eunice Gluth of Morgan, and Diane Hostettler of Minneapolis; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob and wife Bernice Rose of Morgan and Marie Gluth of Post Falls, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, June; brother, Virgil; sister-in-law, Arlene; and brothers-in-law, Don and Clyde.

Janette E. Goblirsch, 69, New Ulm, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at her home. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Janette was born April 1, 1932, in Albin Township, Brown County, the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Soukup) Goblirsch. She grew up in Sleepy Eye, and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1950. Janette moved to St. Paul with her twin sister, where they worked for three years. They moved to Chicago and New York, before returning to Sleepy Eye, where they lived on the farm with their parents until 1989. Janette has lived in New Ulm since the fall of 1994. She enjoyed reading and doing research at the library.
Janette is survived by her twin sister, Jane Goblirsch of Fairfax; sisters, Mariann Treml of Comfrey, Angela and husband Robert Augustin of Comfrey, and Beatrice Goblirsch of Japan; brothers, Clarence Goblirsch of Comfrey, Sylvan Goblirsch of Comfrey, and Stanley and wife Joyce Goblirsch of Modesto, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters in infancy, Armella and Thecla; sister-in-law, Verna Goblirsch; brother-in-law, Ben Treml; nieces, Thecla Treml and Diane Augustin; nephews, Christopher Goblirsch, Neil Treml, Richard Goblirsch and Grett Goblirsch.

Kevin Kalkhoff, 46, Morgan, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Oct. 3, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan, with interment in the Catholic cemetery in Morgan. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
Kevin Bernard Kalkhoff was born March 29, 1955 in Sleepy Eye, to Bernard and Louise (Weber) Kalkhoff. He resided with his family in Eden Township, Brown County, and attended St. Michael's Elementary School, graduating from Morgan Public High School in 1973. He was a dairy farmer for a number of years until his health wouldn't allow him to continue. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, the Diocesan Worship and Liturgy Committee, a past choir director, and church organist for 33 years. Kevin was the recipient of the Bishop's Service Award in 1955. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews, gardening, cooking, playing cards, reading books and music.
Kevin is survived by his father,, Bernard Kalkhoff and Bernice of Morgan; sisters, Bonnie and husband David Mathiowetz of Morgan, Mavis and husband Gary Schumacher of Lamberton, Claire and husband Dennis Miller of Shoreview, LouAnn and husband Chuck Gunderson of Bloomington, Mary Jo and husband Gary Schroeder of Sleepy Eye; and sister-in-law, Denise Kalkhoff of Morgan. Also surviving are aunts and uncles, 20 nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and nephews. Kevin was preceded in death by his mother Louise in 1986; his grandparents; and brother Ken in 1998. In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials to American Heart Association.

Harry Peterson, 104, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye.
Harry was born Feb. 13, 1897, in Leavenworth Township, on a farm which is now Cobden, to Thomas and Martha (Frederickson) Peterson. He was the second of seven children -- five boys and two girls. He completed elementary school in Cobden. He was one of the three students taught ninth grade subjects in Cobden and the following year he took an Agriculture Short Course in Sleepy Eye. On Dec. 6, 1914, Harry and his brother Roy were picking corn and on the last round, Harry got his right hand caught in the corn picker. He lost four fingers on his right hand. He recovered after nine weeks in a Mankato hospital. In 1919, he completed a one year accounting course at the Minnesota Business College. The country was in a depression when he finished, and no jobs were available so he and a brother and cousin worked in the harvest fields of Kansas, South and North Dakota. In 1925, he married Loretta Marie Hanson. Loretta passed away in October of 1989, after almost 64 years of marriage. They had five children; four died shortly after they were born. After marriage, the couple lived for a short time in Minneapolis, then moved to his mother's small farm in Cobden. In 1930, they moved to Loretta's mother's larger farm in Eden Township, where he was one of the original growers for Del Monte. In 1945, Harry bought a farm three miles north of Evan in Eden Township and remained there until he retired in 1965. He and Loretta then moved to Sleepy Eye.
After retiring, they traveled extensively in the United States and took trips to Europe, Mexico, Canada and Hawaii. In 1992, Harry moved to an apartment at Countryside Retirement Community. Harry was confirmed June 5, 1911, in a Lutheran Church in Cobden. He was an active member of the Sleepy Eye Methodist Church for over 70 years and volunteered many hours when the present church was built. Harry was a member and an officer of the Brown County Farm Bureau, a 50 year member of the Mason's and the Eastern Star, served six years as a supervisor of Eden Township Board, three years as an assessor in Eden Township, and six years on the Brown County ASCS Board.
Harry is survived by his son, Jack and wife Patricia Peterson of Braham; granddaughters and great-grandchildren, Sue and Darryl Finn of Minnetonka, Dixie Peterson, Alex Gerosolina and Anna Gerosolina of Austin Tex., Julie Peterson and Scott Shelton, and twins, Ian and Inger Shelton of San Diego, Calif.; sister, Myrtle Peterson of Missoula, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Russell, Evert, Roy and Archie; and sister, Lucille Johnston.
Casket bearers were Chris Christensen, Darryl Finn, Dennis Lokken, Eugene McNall, Jeffrey Peterson and Eugene Schieffert.

Myron Arthur Trebesch, 70, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 1, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Springfield, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Myron was born March 8, 1931, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, to Arthur and Verna (Meinert) Trebesch. He attended country school, after which he farmed with his dad at home. On Aug. 24, 1954, he married Bernus Trost at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso. The couple continued to farm in Leavenworth Township, and in 1957, they purchased a farm in Brookville Township. Myron was proud to know that he worked on the farm with horses and four-wheel-drive tractors. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield, and was truly a family man and farmer who enjoyed wood carving, square dancing, waltzing, and some traveling. He like to relax as he listened to old time music, and visit with his friends about farming. Myron was a "John Deere" man his entire life, and took special enjoyment in being recognized as "grandpa" by all of the day care children at Muriel's home.
Myron is survived by his wife Bernus Trebesch of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Muriel and husband Dave Walter of Springfield and Kristine and husband Tim Buri of Byron; son, Ronnie and wife Suzanne Trebesch of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Melonie, Mandy, Marty and Matthew Hillesheim; Katie Anne Trebesch and fiance' Brian Roberts, Kelly Bernus Trebesch, and Mark and Noah Buri; great-grandchildren, Caleb Myron, Cora, Vishe' and Arynzi; mother, Verna Trebesch of Sleepy Eye; sister, Eunice Windschitl of Sleepy Eye; and brother, Patrick and wife Nancy Trebesch of Faribault. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Trebesch; brother-in-law, Linus Windschitl and mother and father-in-law, Albert and Wilhelmina Trost.
Casket bearers were John Trost, Clark Trebesch, James Windschitl, Randy Trost, Martin Hillesheim and Matthew Hillesheim.

Helen Marie Fromm, 54, Waukesha, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Oct. 9, at St. William Catholic Church, Waukesha, with interment in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home, Waukesha, handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests Masses or memorials to the Cooperating Congregations of Waukesha County, or to St. William Catholic Church.
Helen was born March 1, 1947, in New Ulm, the daughter of Marvin and Helen Altmann. She is survived by husband, Thomas James; sons, Thomas and wife Jenny Fromm, and Timothy and wife Liz Fromm; daughter, Michelle and husband Jeff Plambeck; grandchild, Amber; sisters, Shirley and husband William Krohn, Bonnie and husband Wallace Bastian, Margaret and husband Tom Albrecht, Sharon Madsen, Lois and husband Robert Schneider, Norma and husband Del Bergseth; and Howard Altmann; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Joanne. She was a member of St. William Catholic Church and a member of the Christian Mothers.

Marie Guggisberg, 84, Fairfax, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 6, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Fairfax, with interment in the church cemetery in Cairo Township, Renville County. The Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Fairfax, handled the arrangements.
Marie (Gitter) Guggisberg was born Aug. 25, 1917, in West Newton Township, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Schwab) Gitter. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her faith, as a youth at St. George's Catholic Church. Marie was united in marriage with Clarence H. Guggisberg on June 18, 1940, at St. George's Catholic Church. The couple farmed in Cairo Township, Renville County. They shared 41 years of marriage before Clarence passed away on Oct. 16, 1981. Marie continued living on their farm site until she moved into Fairfax in 1993. She entered the Fairfax Community Home on Oct. 25, 1997. Marie was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax, where she was active with the Catholic Aid Association, and the Christian Mother's Society. She was also a member of the Fairfax VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Marie loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, flower gardening and homemaking.
Marie is survived by sons, Tom and wife Kay Guggisberg of Hill City, S.D., Steve and wife Evelyn Guggisberg of Starbuck, Jack and wife Sheri Guggisberg of Burnsville, Mark and wife Susan Guggisberg of Hartley, Iowa, David Guggisberg and special friend Sue of Fairfax, and Jerry Guggisberg of Fairfax; daughters, Theresa and husband Bernie Zeug of Redwood Falls, Janice and husband Mike Friedrichs of Golden Colo., Rose and husband Gary Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, Ruth and husband Dr. Karl Beesch of Marshall, and Mary and husband Rick Holub of New Brighton; daughter-in-law, Karen Guggisberg of Fairfax; 43 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Cecilia and husband John Taughtes of Gibbon; brother, Hilary Gitter of the Franklin Healthcare Center and his wife Marie of Sleepy Eye; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Agnes Gitter of St. George, Alex and wife Agnes Guggisberg of Gibbon, Bernice Pfeffer of Fairfax, Marion Wendland of New Ulm, and Sally and husband Lloyd Warner of Australia; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; a baby, in infancy; son, Joseph in June of 1980; three brothers, four sisters, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Leonard H. Portner, 82, New Ulm, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Oct. 5, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with interment in the Catholic Cemetery, New Ulm.
Leonard was born Jan. 26, 1919, in New Ulm to George and Annie (Klinkhammer) Portner. He attended District 6 Country School in Sigel Township, Brown County. On Oct. 29, 1947, he married Alice Stueber at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm. After marriage, they farmed in Sigel Township, and retired in the mid-1990s, but continued to live on the farm. During the last three winters, Leonard lived at Sunset Apartments in New Ulm. He was well known for his restoring of antique tractors that he drove in many parades in the area. He loved to travel, listen to old time music and play his concertina. Leonard was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church, the St. Joseph Catholic Aid Council, the St. John's Court 698 Catholic Order of Foresters, the German Bohemian Heritage Society, the Lost Dog and Fix Hunters Club, the Prairieland Flywheelers Two Cylinder Club, and was a member of various polka clubs around New Ulm.
Leonard is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Ron Kahle of New Ulm; son, Marlin Portner; son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Jane Portner, all of New Ulm; seven grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Alice Portner and George and Angie Portner, all of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice on Oct. 11, 1982; and daughter-in-law, Carol Portner on Dec. 1, 1988.
Casket bearers were Mike Portner, Darrick Postel, Corey Portner, Laura Kahle, Shannon Postel, Brandon Portner, Alisha Portner, and Jeffrey Kahle.
