Harleigh D. Marti
Harleigh D. Marti, one month, three days old, died Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Harleigh is survived by her parents, Jennifer Kay Marti and Joseph Scott Schneier, both of Sleepy Eye; grandparents, Mark Marti of Sleepy Eye and Roxanne and husband Lenny Fassbender of New Ulm; uncles, Adam and Brooks Marti, both of Sleepy Eye.
Paul Ostergaard Paulsen
Paul Ostergaard Paulsen, 86, Evan, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis. Funeral services were held Thursday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Evan, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Paul was born Feb. 21, 1916, in Evan, the son of Lars and Kirsten (Ostergaard) Paulsen. He attended grade school in Evan and high school in Lansing, Mich. Paul served in the United State Air Force from January 1942 to November 1945, stationed mainly in Alaska. On July 21, 1943, Paul married Marie Cannizzarro in Evan. Following his discharge from the United States Air Force, he returned to Sleepy Eye until moving to Evan in 1955, where he has lived since. Paul worked for the Sleepy Eye Elevator for 36 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of Evan.
Paul is survived by his sons, Robert and wife Marilyn of Lake Crystal, and Lynn and wife Staci of Culver; daughters, Betty Voigt of Sleepy Eye and Barbara and husband Raymond Christensen of Sleepy Eye; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Anna Petermann of Evan, Marie Pinneo of Canton, Mich., and Pauline Schackel of Evan. He was preceded in death by his parent; wife, Marie in 1991; and brothers, Cliff and Chris.
Casket bearers were George Schackel, Richard Petermann, John Petermann, John Hannay, Richard Mogensen and Fred Rasmussen.
Ellsworth Sandmann
Ellsworth Sandmann, 81, Morgan, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan, due to cancer. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan with interment in Danebod Cemetery. Redwood Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Ellsworth was born Sept. 3, 1920, on the family farm in Brookville Township, to William and Rosa (Gluth) Sandmann. He attended country school District 34. After his schooling, he worked on the on the farm for his uncles. On July 16, 1942, Ellsworth was united in marriage to Marilyn Johnson at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan. Together, the couple lived and worked the family farm until 1967, at which time they moved into Morgan. Ellsworth worked as a truck driver and owned and operated school buses. He also worked as a Pioneer Seed salesman until his retirement. Ellsworth held several offices at his church, including Sunday School superintendent and teacher for many years. He served on the church council, and was a member of the choir. He also served as an ambassador to Green Lake Bible Camp. Ellsworth was a member of the Civic and Commerce Association and the Morgan Sportsman's Club. He also served as a firearms safety instructor. Ellsworth enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing cards at the pool hall. He loved children and driving the school bus, spending time with his family and friends, and volunteering his time and serving the community.
Ellsworth is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn; children, Nancy and husband Lowell Blick of Morgan, Sheldon and wife Ursula Sandmann of Inver Grove Heights, and Wendy and husband Bob Hocking of Geneva, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Suzanne; sisters, Ellen Hillger, Luella Schliemann and Beatrice Zeise; son-in-law, Larry Hoffbeck and three infant grandchildren.
Marcella Marie Schroepfer
Marcella Marie Schroepfer, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, Sept. 5, 4-8 p.m., and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a combined COF/Holy Family Society/Christian Mothers rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., both Thursday at the funeral home.
Marcella was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Springfield, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Meidl) Augustin. She grew up and attended country school near Leavenworth. Marcella married Raymond Schroepfer on Oct. 24, 1938, at the Japanese Martyrs Catholic Church in Leavenworth. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Marcella was a homemaker and raised four children. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Christian Mothers and the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She was also a member of the Holy Family Society in Leavenworth. Marcella enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening, especially flowers.
Marcella is survived by her children, Mary Ann and husband Richard Helling of St. James, Marvin and wife Sharyn Schroepfer of Apple Valley, Dennis and wife Sandy Schroepfer of Alexandria and Joyce and husband John Miller of Rochester; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brother, Perry and wife Marion Augustin of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; brother, Edwin Augustin; sister, Loretta and husband Norbert Windschitl; and brother, Roman and wife Margaret Meidl.
Bernard Stark
Bernard Herman Stark, 90, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the Moravian Cemetery in rural Springfield. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm handled the arrangements.
Bernard was born June 19, 1912, in Bashaw Township, Brown County. He grew up on the family farm and attended Comfrey schools. He was united in marriage to Grace Therkilsen on Feb. 19, 193, at Comfrey. Together, Bernard and Grace farmed and raised their family in Stately Township, Brown County. They retired from farming and moved into Springfield in 1974. They then moved to Sleepy Eye in September of 1992. Bernard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, and formerly a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Springfield.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Grace of Sleepy Eye; son, Lanny Lee and his wife Beverly Stark of Bloomington; daughter, Linda and husband Gerald Schueler of Sleepy Eye; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald, in 1986; great-granddaughters, Autumn and Alicia Ross in 2000; and five brothers and six sisters.
David "Skinner" Roy Johnson
David "Skinner" Roy Johnson, 63, Lino Lakes, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood. Funeral services were Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
David was born Nov. 23, 1938, in Prairieville Township, Brown County, Minn., the son of Olaf and Alice (Beilke) Johnson. He grew up and attended District #29 Country School in Prairieville Township, later attending school in Sleepy Eye, where he graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School on May 29, 1956. David attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a bachelor of metallurgical engineering degree on June 12, 1965. He joined the United States Army reserves and served until his discharge in May of 1967. David worked for 3-M in Minneapolis for many years as an engineer, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed sports and loved the outdoors, spending a lot of time camping, hunting and traveling with his dog "Max." David especially enjoyed fishing throughout the United States and around the world. He traveled to several places, including Russia, South America, Alaska and the Amazon.
David is survived by his brothers, Robert Johnson and Darwin and wife Carol Johnson, all of Sleepy Eye; sister, Judy and husband Mike Sandmann of Franklin; nieces and nephews, Phil, Kahla, Karen, Diane, Teresa and Brent. He is also survived by his special friends, Rick and Kim Foss and their daughter, Lilly of Lino Lakes, Bill Hettinger of Vadnais Heights, Earl Stanek of Cotter, Ariz., and Jim Drake of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Alice.
Richard Kraus
Richard Kraus, 81, Sleepy Eye, formerly of New Ulm, died Sunday, Sept. 8. 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with interment in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm. Full military honors were conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations. Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.
Richard was born Dec. 19, 1920, in New Ulm, to William and Alvina (Terhofter) Kraus. He attended New Ulm Public Schools. Richard married Jeanette Hansen on July 24, 1942, in New Ulm. He served in the United States Army from Aug. 12, 1942, to Nov. 16, 1945, as a surgical technician with the 397th Station Hospital in England. After returning to New Ulm, he owned and operated Kraus Brothers Construction with his brother Clarence for 30 years. Richard was a member of the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm and the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. He had been a resident of Sleepy Eye Care Center for the past three years.
Richard is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Richard "Butch" and wife Sheryl Kraus of Eden Prairie and Douglas and wife Julie Kraus of New Ulm; grandchildren, Jason Kraus and Melissa Kraus of New Ulm, Amanda and husband Jason Nuebert of Chaska, and Alissa and husband Todd Benson of Beale Air Force Base in California; great-granddaughters, Kyrah Rose Nuebert and Jasmyn Nuebert; sister, Viola Weller of New Ulm; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence "Goldie" and Veronica Kraus and Harold "Boots" Kraus, all of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Jeanette Kraus on June 21, 1984.
Norbert J. Barthel
Norbert J. Barthel, 91, Annandale, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002. Funeral services were Monday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Annandale, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Annandale. Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice. Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale, handled the arrangements.
Norbert was born in St. Michael. He was a Grain Belt distributor in Sleepy Eye until his retirement.
Norbert is survived by his children, Joanne Hartmann, Mesa, Ariz., David Barthel of Albuquerque, N.M., Jane and husband William Stepanek of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Daniel and wife Vicky Barthel of Rancho Cordova, Calif., and Dean and wife Cathy Barthel of Bloomington; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Olivia Chervanek; sister-in-law, Betty Barthel; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Donna Hale. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha M. (Hengels) Barthel and daughter, Jean Marie.
Henrietta Haase
Henrietta Haase, 77, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services were Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Henrietta was born a twin, with sister, Hilda, on March 8, 1925, to Roelf and Jeradine (Tamneus) Meyer in Freeport, Ill. She attended District #35 Country School in Noble County, near Fulda. Henrietta kept home for a family in Fulda until her marriage to Donald Haase on Feb. 9, 1947. Henrietta and Don made their home on a farm near Hadley, until moving to Sleepy Eye in 1961. She worked as a cook for various businesses before starting with the Sleepy Eye Public School in 1973. Henrietta retired from the public school in 1993 and then worked as the manager for the senior dining program at Ross Park Apartments in Sleepy Eye. She enjoyed cooking, baking pies and gardening. Henrietta was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, and served on the Altar Guild for many years.
Henrietta is survived by her husband, Donald Haase of Sleepy Eye; children, Carol and husband Delbert Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, Dixie and husband Thomas Kluver of Bloomington, Linda and husband Casper Tiedeken of New Ulm and Donna and husband Jon Medin of Parker, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and three brothers and sisters.
Casket bearers were Erik Medin, Michael Kluver, Joseph Kluver, Jason Tiedeken, Jeff Tiedeken and Patrick Hillesheim.
Veronica G. "Fronie" Hansen
Veronica G. "Fronie" Hansen, 101, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.
Veronica was born Nov. 25, 1900, in Sleepy Eye, to Clement and Mary (Rosenhammer) Bauer. She was united in marriage with Charles C. "C.C." Hansen, on Nov. 22, 1923, at the St. Mary's Rectory in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, the couple lived in Sleepy Eye, where Fronie worked as a homemaker and bookkeeper for their business, The City Drayline. She enjoyed her grandchildren and cooking, and was very active in many church and civic activities. Fronie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the National Catholic Society of Foresters.
Fronie is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Charles "Chisey" Hansen and Harold "Hooch" and wife Jeanne Hansen, all of Sleepy Eye; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Katherine Hansen of sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles "C.C." Hansen on March 25, 1968; son, Dick Hansen on Jan. 10, 1992; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Hansen on May 16, 2001; brothers, Louie Bauer and Bert Bauer; and a sister, Sister Albertina "Rose" Bauer.
Casket bearers were Craig Hansen, Scott Hansen, Tom Hansen, Steve Hansen, Mary Jeanne Bloodgood and Kathy Jo Marti.
Marcella Ann Juracek
Marcella Ann Juracek, 92, Fargo, N.D., died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in Fargo. Funeral services were Monday at the Riverview Place Chapel in Fargo, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Boulger Funeral Home of Fargo handled the arrangements.
Marcella was born July 28, 1910, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Michael Mathias and Mary (Faast) Radl. She grew up in sleepy Eye and graduated from high school in 1928. Marcella attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona and taught school in North Dakota and Minnesota for seven years. She then moved to San Diego, Calif., where she worked at Consolidated, producing B-24 aircraft during WWII. Marcella moved to Albuquerque, N.M. in 1949, and was united in marriage to George Juracek in Lawton, Okla., on Sept. 19, 1952. The couple made their home in Albuquerque, where they owned and operated the Albuquerque Monument Company for over 30 years. George died Dec. 26, 1974. After living in New Mexico for 49 years, Marcella moved to Fargo in 1998, where she resided at Riverview Place.
Marcella is survived by sisters, Marie Kuhlmann and Irene Klick; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and brothers, Michael, Dr. Robert and Dr. Cyril.
Merrill "Mickey" D. Roberts
Merrill "Mickey" D. Roberts, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 16, at Sturm Funeral Home, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye, with full military honors.
Mickey was born June 11, 1918, in Sleepy Eye, the son of William and Isabelle (McKenzie) Roberts. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School. Mickey entered the United States Army June 12, 1941, and served during WWII until he was discharged on July 6, 1945. He returned to Sleepy Eye and went to work for Roberts Brothers Concrete. Mickey married Mary Eckstein on May 31, 1947, in Aberdeen, S.D. the couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Mickey continued to work for Roberts Brothers, which later became Gopher Concrete. Mickey retired as manager in 1983. He was a member of the Sleepy Eye American Legion and the VFW. Mickey enjoyed traveling to Texas and Arizona in the winters and spending time at the family cabin. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Mickey is survived by his daughter, Sharon and husband James Henrichs of Sleepy Eye; son Bill and wife Brenda Roberts of Sleepy Eye; daughter-in-law, Sharon Roberts of New Ulm; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Eckstein of Sleepy Eye and Helen and husband Kenny Zobel of New Ulm; brothers, James and wife Alice Roberts of New Ulm, Tom and wife Joyce Roberts of Sleepy Eye, Beach and wife Pauline Roberts of Sanborn, Jack and wife Kathy Roberts of Nevis and Bob Roberts of Arizona. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; son, Richard; daughter, Connie; and sisters, Lois Dannheim and Katherine Kirkpatrick.
