Bette V. Slotness
Former Pike Lake resident Bette V. Slotness, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 in the Benedictine Health Center. The Kenwood Ave. resident was 83.

Bette was born in Grand Rapids on Nov. 10, 1920 to Edward and Margarit Sandgren Huson and had been an area resident since 1935. Bette was formerly employed as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell. She was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church, AARP and the ladies of the Elks. Bette was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed having her family around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arthur in 1998 and brothers Edward, Vernon, Clarence, Darwood and Bert.

She is survived by her children Sandra (Gary) Abrahamson of Kansas City, Kan., Richard (Shirley) Slotness and Steve (Sue) Slotness, both of Duluth, grandchildren Jon (Lisa) Abrahamson, Jeff Abrahamson, Lori Abrahamson, Dane Slotness, Shelley (Bob) Motzko, Trista (Steve) Roseen and Caley Slotness, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and special friend Cindy Storlie.

Services were Monday in First Lutheran Church.

Kenneth Neil Carpenter
Becky (Barry) Ives of Saginaw is mourning the death of her father, Kenneth Neil Carpenter. He died peacefully in his Hermantown home on Thurs., Aug. 12, 2004, after a valiant 11-year struggle with cancer. He was 80.

Kenneth was born in Duluth and attended school there. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Air Force as a nose gunner on a B-24, stationed in England. He flew on 35 missions over France and Germany. Kenneth was a journeyman lineman and an IBEW union member for 35 years. He was a member of AA for 19 years. He married Alice Godden on April 24, 1982.

Kenneth is also survived by his wife Alice, four sons, another daughter, two adopted sons, nine step-children, two sisters, three brothers, 42 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Elida V. Foeltz
Ron Foeltz of Saginaw is mourning the death of his mother, Elida V. Foeltz of Duluth. She died Sun., Aug. 8, 2004, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 87.

She was born in Clitherall, Minn. Elida married Burtis Foeltz on Nov. 17, 1940. She had worked as a clerk at the former Lund’s Pharmacy and Ben Franklin in the West End and at the former Frank’s IGA. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Retail Clerks Union, and former member of the Lutheran Church of Christ the King.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.

She is also survived by her daughter Lana Birkhofer of Duluth, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Entombment at Sunrise Memorial Park.

Bonnie Jean Goodell
Services will be held today, Thursday, for Bonnie Jean Goodell, of Proctor. She died Monday, August 23, 2004 in St. Luke’s Hospice. She was 54.

She was born on November 17, 1949 to Edgar and June Colombe in Duluth. She was a 1968 Proctor High School graduate and married Bob Goodell on July 27, 1974 in Proctor. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. Bonnie worked for Consolidated Title, Sylvester’s and most recently at the Proctor Milk House.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edgar in 1998.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; two daughters, Jennifer and Robbie Goodell, both of Duluth; a son, Chad of Proctor; her mother, June Colombe of Proctor; three grandchildren, Jade, Taya and Dante; five sisters, Carolyn Shane of Proctor, Mary Chapel of Chaska, Minn, Jan Korpi of Duluth, Linda Campbell of Duluth and Teresa (Chuck) Schaefer of Colorado; four brothers, her twin, Bruce (Carol) Colombe of Duluth, Richard A. Colombe and Michael (Cheryl) Colombe, both of Esko, and Patrick of Minneapolis; several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Rose Catholic Church. Rev Fr. James Bissonette officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Joseph L. Stevens
Joseph L. Stevens of Proctor passed away in his home Thurs., Aug. 19, 2004, of cancer. He was 71.

He was born Feb. 15, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minn. to Benjamin and Henrietta (Kriedler) Stevens. Joe was raised in Wadena and moved to Duluth in 1969, where he met and married Carol J. O’Bey. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from Oct. 1953-Oct. 1955. Joe worked for Transport, Inc. from 1969 until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the American Legion Post and Teamsters Union #346. Joe had a great love of airplanes, gardening, race cars, and crossword puzzles.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and sister Buena.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Carol, sons Michael and Patrick of Minneapolis, daughters Sheri of Minneapolis, Diane (Ken) Kuechler of Duluth, Susan (Chris) DelPriore of San Deigo, Calif., Joni Dorfman of Superior, seven grandchildren, three great-grandsons, brother Bart (Rosemary) of Wadena and many nieces and nephews.

Mildred J. Ramseth
Services were held earlier in the week for Mildred J. Ramseth, who was born in Proctor and was a long time West Duluth business owner, died Sat., Aug. 21, 2004, at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 87.

She was born June 26, 1917 to Albert and Jenny (Frisk) Anderson. She married Arnold M. Ramseth in Dec. 1949. Mildred owned and operated West Duluth’s exclusive dress shop on Grand Avenue, the Magnolia Shoppe, for over a half century until she retired in Dec. 2000. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor, where she was actively involved.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers John “Al” and Arthur Anderson and by her husband Arnold.

Survivors include her sister-in-law Virginia Anderson of Proctor, niece Debra (Randy) Gergen of Duluth, nephew Tom (Nancy) Anderson of Beulah, N.D., four grand-nephews and by a special friend Dorothy Leerssen of Duluth.

Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Clarence David “Dave” Haglin
Clarence David “Dave” Haglin of Saginaw passed away on Thurs., Aug. 19, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 65.

He was born March 13, 1939, in Gronigen, Minn. to Clarence and Ardyce (Downey) Haglin. Clarence served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was united in marriage to Leslie Newton on Nov. 1, 1964. Dave worked for Town and Country Garage Builders of Duluth. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Dave was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years Leslie, sons Richard of Alaska and Jeffrey (Gina) of Moose Lake, daughter Jodie Demenge of Carlton, five grandsons, his mother Ardyce Haglin and several nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Wallace J. Kendzora
Wallace J. Kendzora, who graduated from Proctor, died Tues., Aug. 24, 2004, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 83.

He was born in Duluth, Minn. He was a World War II Marine Corps Veteran. Wally was a foreman for Fraser Shipyards until retiring in 1983. He had also worked at Enger Park Golf Course. He was a member of St. Lawrence Church, its OK Club and was a past president of the St. Lawrence Men’s Club, the American Legion and the Duluth Superior Harbor Club. He married Maritza Fajdetich on Jan. 31, 1948 in Duluth and married his second wife Ruby Smith on July 19, 1969 in Duluth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Maritza in 1965 and Ruby in 1999, a sister Genevieve and grandson Ian Wiedel in 1966.

He is survived by his daughters Joanne O’Bryan of Colo., Susie (David) Godin of Texas and Mary Jo (Jerry) Wiedel of Colo., brothers John (Carole) of Duluth and Joseph “Chucky” (Mary), sisters Dorothy (Ray) Frones of Duluth and Joanne Pasek of Duluth, a step-son John “Louie” (Angela) Smith, his special friend Grace Ward and grandchildren Kendra, Jessica, Abigail, Maritza, John and Alyssa.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Duluth. Military Honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Anton “Tony” Edward Hedquist
Anton “Tony” Edward Hedquist, a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor, died Fri., Aug. 13, 2004, after a short stay at the Homestead Nursing Home in Deer River. He was 97.

He was born to Swedish immigrants John and Carolena Hedquist. Tony began working for Minnesota Power & Light as a groundsman in 1935 and he retired in 1968 as a line foreman. During these years, Tony raised his family in Duluth, traveled across the U.S. and enjoyed many memorable summers at the Shady Shore Resort in Deer River. He was a member of the Duluth Boat Club in the 1920’s and a member of bowling leagues.

His wife of 65 years, Myrtle died in 1997.

He is survived by their four sons including former Proctor resident John (Carol) of Cloquet, eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, his second wife Dorothy and her children and grandchildren.

Interment was at Sunrise Memorial Park in Duluth.

Margaret “Peggy” Paulus
Services were held last week for Margaret “Peggy” Paulus. She died Sun., Aug. 22, 2004, at the age of 64.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cliff and Dorothy Hanson, sister Jackie and grandson Chase.

Peggy is survived by her husband James, sons Kevin (Kathy) Paulus and Mark (Theresa) Paulus, daughter Stephanie (Ebbie) Grammer, sister Shirley Mahnke, brother Michael (Rose) Hanson and her grandchildren.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Forrest Joseph Gordon
Paulette (Stan) Barnard of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Forrest Joseph Gordon. The Duluth resident died Tues., Aug. 24, 2004, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. He was 85.

He was born at home in Duluth. A 1937 graduate of Denfeld High School, Forrest was an Army Air Force World War II veteran, serving as a Staff Sgt. in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations, including a year as an aircraft mechanic in India. He married Elsbeth Anderson in Duluth in 1950. After the war, he worked as a machinist with U.S. Steel and later worked as a State of Minn. Grain Inspector from 1954-1971. He was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, serving as Council President, singing in the choir for over 60 years and a member of the Sunshine Club. Forrest also was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program for over 20 years and had been Secretary of the AFSME Union.

His parents and three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

He is also survived by his wife Elsbeth, another daughter Alane (George) Sweezy of Duluth, grandchildren Krista (Brett) Paulick, Eric Barnard and Lora, Brian and John Sweezy, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Entombment at Forest Hill Cemetery.
