Arvid H. Jones
Arvid H. Jones, 83, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Monday at Sturm Funeral Home with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye, with military rites performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Arvid was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Lake Crystal, to Thomas and Effie (Jones) Jones. He attended school in Garden City and graduated in 1937. After high school, Arvid attended college for three years. On Dec. 24, 1943, Arvid married Joyce Mallett in Colorado. The couple moved to Sleepy Eye in 1947, where Arvid was employed at the Marshall-Wells Hardware Store. In 1955, Arvid and "Mac" McCuskey formed a partnership and purchased the store, renaming it Jones-McCuskey Hardware. Arvid operated the store until 1979. After the store closed, Arvid worked for Turbes Clothing until his retirement in 1984. Arvid was a career Army man. He enlisted in the Army Signal Corps in 1941, and served in China during WWII. He enjoyed the military so much, that when he was discharged in 1946, he enlisted in an active Army Reserve Unit. He was discharged from the Army as a captain after having proudly served his country for 28 years.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Joyce Jones of Sleepy Eye; daughters and sons-in-law, Deanne and husband James Weisser of Mobile, Ala., Sherri and husband Leon Spaeth of Tacoma, Wash., Linda and husband Thomas Tangen of Bloomington and Connie and husband Mark Kusche of Golden Valley; grandchildren, Theodore and Brian Weisser, Ryan and Kimberly Spaeth, Paul, Carolynn and Stephanie Tangen and Kristin and Matthew Kusche; great-grandchildren, Carly and Connor Weisser; sister, Vivian Strand of Mankato; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Effie Jones; grandson, Carl Tangen; and brothers, Floyd Jones and Clifford Jones.
Casket bearers were Thomas Tangen, Mark Kusche, James Weisser, Leon Spaeth, Paul Tangen and Matthew Kusche.

Marsha (Vogelpohl) Jorgensen
Marsha Yvonne Jorgensen, 63, of Fletcher, N.C., formerly of Hanska and New Ulm, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at her home in North Carolina. Funeral services will be Friday, 10:30 a.m., at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church in rural Hanska, with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Marsha was born Nov. 22, 1938, in New Ulm, the daughter of Victor and Florence (Johnson) Vogelpohl. She spent her youth in New Ulm and attended public schools, graduating from New Ulm High School in 1956. Marsha worked for Supersweet Feeds in New Ulm, and then moved to Rochester where she worked as a medical transcriptionist for Mayo Clinic for several years. Marsha married Orville Paulson in December of 1957. Together they farmed in Lake Hanska Township. Marsha worked for the Hanska Elementary School and later, the Blue Earth County Courthouse. Her secretarial skills enabled her to work at many temporary positions over the years. She was also assistant manager of an apartment complex in Minneapolis for several years. Marsha married Lauritz (Larry) Jorgensen in April, 2000. They lived in Lakeville before moving to Fletcher, N.C. in August of this year. She was a member of Lake Hanska Lutheran Church, ELCW and the church choir. Marsha was a member of the Christian Women's Club, Brown County Extension Club, Quilting Cousins and enjoyed singing and playing the piano.
Marsha is survived by her husband, Larry of Fletcher, N.C.; son, Jeff and wife Gina Paulson; daughter, Jennifer Brand; grandchildren, Ryan, Cullen and Vanessa Paulson and Mason Brand, all of Hanska; father, Victor Vogelpohl of New Ulm; sister, Kay Barber of St. Paul; brother, Dr. Thomas and wife Alison Vogelpohl of St. Paul; half-sister, Vicki Warner of Woodbury; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Vogelpohl in September, 2000.

Donald "Boots" Bertrand Krzmarzick
Donald "Boots" Bertrand Krzmarzick, 74, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Donald was born July 11, 1928, in New Ulm, to Florian and Mathilda (Bertrand) Krzmarzick. He lived in Sleepy Eye until the age of eight, when he moved with his parents to the Krzmarzick homestead, east of Sleepy Eye. There Donald farmed with his father until his father's death and then continued as a fourth-generation farmer of the Krzmarzick Farm. He served in the United States Army from August 1952, to August 1954, stationed in Korea part of that time. Donald was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Aid Association, Catholic Order of Foresters, Sleepy Eye V.F.W., the American Legion Post, Sleepy Eye Golf Club and for many years, the Sleepy Eye Bowling Association. For a number of years he spent winters in Hot Springs, Ark., and New Braunfels, Tex., in the company of his friend, Ray Lang. Boots enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting and working on crossword puzzles.
Donald is survived by his sisters, Florine C. Rohde of Circle Pines, and Margaret "Peggy" and husband Ray Tauer of Sleepy Eye; brother, Charles P. and wife Wilma Krzmarzick of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; 18 nieces and nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florian and Mathilda.
Casket bearers for Donald "Boots" Krzmarzick, who died Friday, Nov. 8, were Bill Ibberson, Dan Helget, Edwin Huiras, Dave Sellner, Sylvan Schumacher and Norbert Krzmarzick. Honorary casket bearers were Ray Lang, Harlan "Fritz" Froehling, Bill Horne, Bob Rathman and Joe Hauser.

Tim Nachreiner
Timothy Edmund Nachreiner, 47, husband of Janet, rural Fairfax, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at his home of a heart attack. Funeral services were Monday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Fairfax, with interment in the church cemetery. Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.
Tim was born Jan. 27, 1955, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Edmund and Loretta (Tauber) Nachreiner. He was baptized as an infant in Springfield and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. He attended school in Leavenworth before graduating from Fairfax High School in 1973. Tim married Janet Weiss on May 17, 1975 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. This union was blessed with four children, Christopher, Curtis, Rachel and Rebecca. They celebrated 27 years of marriage together. During his lifetime, Tim worked as a mechanic at Varpness Implement in Lamberton, Anderson Implement in Redwood Falls and Berdan Implement in Fairfax, before he began his family dairy farming operation in Cairo Township, Renville County. Tim was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax, where he served in the past on the church council. He also served for many years on the Cairo Township Board, currently holding the position of supervisor. Tim loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially football and wrestling. He loved farming and milking his cows, with his wife and children working beside him. He was a handi-man and could fix anything.
Tim is survived by his wife, Janet Nachreiner of Fairfax; sons, Christopher Nachreiner and special friend Tina Evenson of rural Fairfax and Curtis Nachreiner and fianceĢ Lisa Firle of rural Fairfax; daughters, Rachel Nachreiner and Rebecca Nachreiner, both of rural Fairfax; father, Edmund Nachreiner of Fairfax; brothers, Tom Nachreiner of Fairfax, Gene and wife Joni Nachreiner of Fairfax, Tony Nachreiner of Fairfax, LeAnder and wife Mary Nachreiner of Fairfax and Joe and wife Mary Nachreiner of Fairfax; father-in-law, Linus Weiss of Sleepy Eye; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donna Weiss of Gaylord, Marvin and wife Maralee Weiss of Sleepy Eye, Stephen "Gar" Weiss of Sleepy Eye, Patty and husband Clete Tauer of Sleepy Eye, MaryAnn Fischer and special friend, Jerry Baumann of Sleepy Eye, Julie and husband Eugene Hildebrandt of St. James, Audrey and husband Ken Ruud of Springfield, Mo., Jeannie and husband Brad Hietanen of Buffalo, Richard Weiss of Sleepy Eye and Brenda and husband Mike Stimpert of Sleepy Eye; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends.

Gilbert "Gil" S. Utecht
Gilbert "Gil" S. Utecht, 88, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Gil was born July 3, 1914, in Sleepy Eye, to Fredrick and Ernestena (Guhlke) Utecht. He lived in Sleepy Eye until graduation from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1933, and then moved to southern California, where he was initially employed in the aircraft industry. In January of 1938, Gil married Ethel Ruegger, also from Sleepy Eye. He held a variety of positions in the aerospace industry, eventually becoming director of support systems for North American Rockwell during the Apollo Spacecraft program at Cape Canaveral, Fla. Gil and Ethel lived in Florida and California for 38 years, retiring to Sleepy Eye in 1971. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye Golf Club, Rockwell Retirees Club and the National Management Club. Gil enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, gardening, golf and playing cards.
Gil is survived by his wife, Ethel Utecht of Sleepy Eye, daughters, Sally and husband Michael Burns of Rochester, and Ruth and husband Douglas Lundborg of Pine Haven, Wyo.; grandchildren, Daniel, Catherine and David Burns and Geoff and Lauren Hurley; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Malinda Wersal.
Casket bearers were Daniel Burns, David Burns, Catherine Burns, Ken Graeve, John O'Hare and Lynn Krenz.

Louis James "Jim" Brown
Louis James "Jim" Brown, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Olivia. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Jim was born May 13, 1918, in Knieram, Iowa, to John E. and Susanna May Brown. He grew up and attended school in Morton and high school in Olivia. Jim married Kathleen McFarland on Sept. 6, 1949, at Holy Redeemer Church in Marshall. He served in the Army Air Corps in Italy on a B-22 bomber during WWII and in the Korean War as a forward observer. Jim and Kathleen made their home in Sleepy Eye where Jim was a technician for Minnesota Valley Breeders and was Sleepy Eye Assessor/Brown County Assessor, retiring in 1986. Jim and Kathleen wintered in South Padre Island, Tex. after retirement. Jim's hobbies included woodworking, fishing, gardening and photography. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kathleen McFarland Brown of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Marsha and husband Mike Duval of Atlanta, Ga. and Ruth and husband Joe Kelly of Shakopee; and son, Jim and wife Maggie Brown of Portland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; sister, Mary Hoff of Maple Grove; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John Brown, Jacob Brown, and George Brown; sisters, Marge Eichten, Ruth Turpin, Rosemary Jastrow, Lucille Haut and Elizabeth Brown.
Casket bearers were Chuck Brown, Chuck Keenan, Mike DuVal, Danny DuVal, Joe Kelly and Matt Kelly.

Verna Janette Class
Verna Janette Class, 92, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were Friday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Evan, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Verna was born in Evan, June 2, 1910, the daughter of Peter and Thora (Christensen) Paulson. She grew up and attended school in Evan. Verna married Fred Class May 18, 1928, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan. The couple lived and farmed in the Evan and Cobden areas for many years. They retired and moved to Sleepy Eye in 1973. Verna has lived at Countryside Retirement Community, Sleepy Eye, since 1997. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of Evan. Verna enjoyed playing cards with her friends, crocheting, gardening and especially spending time with her family.
Verna is survived by her children, Ralph and wife JoAnn Class of Apple Valley and Arnie and wife Mary of Overland Park, Kans.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Vivian Paulson of Edinburgh, Tex. and Marie Paulson of Sleepy Eye; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Thora; son, Gerald in 1986; four brothers; four sisters; and husband, Fred in 1997.
Casket bearers were David Class, Eric Class, Brian Class, Paul Class, Dean Twite and Jeff Twite.

Bernard "Benny" Michael Fischer
Bernard "Benny" Michael Fischer, 70, Sleepy Eye, formerly of Springfield, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 21 at The Church of The Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, with interment in the church cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will take place Wednesday, Nov. 20, 4-8 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 21, 7:30-9 a.m., at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service. A Holy Family Rosary is planned at 4:30 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m., both Wednesday at the funeral home.
Benny was born June 6, 1932, to Bernard and Mary (Lenertz) Fischer in Springfield. He grew up and attended country school in Mulligan Township. Benny later attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Comfrey. After his schooling, Benny farmed with his father until his entry into the United States Army. He served in the Korean War as a surveyor for two years. When he returned to the United States, he continued Benny continued farming in Mulligan Township until his retirement, due to failing health. Benny entered Divine Providence Community Home in 1998. Throughout his life, he was a member of The Church of the Japanese Martyrs, the Holy Family Society and the Knights of Columbus. Benny served as the Mulligan Township Board Clerk for several years and was also a member of the John Watson American Legion in Springfield, the NFO and the Farmers Union. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and attending Camp Courage, sponsored by the MS Society.
Benny is survived by his brothers and sisters, Jean and husband Ambrose Nosbush of Fairfax, Robert and wife Doris Fischer of Oceanside, Calif., Richard and wife Pat Fischer of Denver, Colo., Marilyn and husband James Klein of Wilmington, N.C., Phyllis and husband Phillip Shaw of Traverse City, Mich. and Jerry and wife Diana Fischer of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Mary; and sister, Joan in infancy.
Casket bearers are Rick Fischer, Mike Fischer, Jeff Nosbush, Daryl Nosbush, Mike Lamfers and Doug Nosbush.

Joseph "Sep" Peter Hauser
Joseph "Sep" Peter Hauser, 80, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Sep was born Sept. 17, 1922, in rural Sleepy Eye, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Breignzer) Hauser. He grew up in Home Township and attended District #23 Country School, later attending St. Mary's School for two years. After he completed his schooling, Sep lived and farmed east of Sleepy Eye in Home Township for many years. He moved to Sleepy Eye in October of 2001. Sep was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Aid Association. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, playing cards and spending time with his family.
Sep is survived by his sisters, Marcella Bushard of New Ulm, Margaret Breu of Searles and Lucille and husband Vince Brandel of New Ulm; brother-in-law, Stanley Portner; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Petronilla Portner; and brothers-in-law, Stanley Bushard and Larry Breu.
Casket bearers were Gregory Bushard, Ronald Bushard, Gordy Bushard, Mike Breu, Tom Breu, Jeffery Brandel, Allan Brandel and James Brandel.

Harry C. Hornbrook
Harry C. Hornbrook, 82, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Private family services were held with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital and Redwood Falls Hospice.
Harry was born Oct. 27, 1920, in Evansville, Ind., the son of Covert and Myrtle (Muschler) Hornbrook. He grew up in Evansville and graduated from Reitz High School in 1938. Harry's mother died when he was 10 years old and his father married Marie Laugel two years later. After graduating from high school, he worked in Evansville for three years. Harry enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. He married R. Jeanne "Dee Dee" Scobie on Nov. 20, 1945, in Beaufort, S.C. Harry was honorable discharged in 1945, and the couple made their home in Evansville, Ind. for a short time. They went to meet Dee Dee's parents and Harry began working with Dee Dee's father, Frank Scobie, at his photography studio. Harry later purchased the business which he operated for a few years. After the studio closed, Harry worked a few jobs in the community, before going to work for Wooldrik Ford in 1950. Harry purchased the business in 1962, later changing the name to Hornbrook Ford. He operated the dealership until he retired and sold it to Chuck Spaeth in 1985. Harry was very active in the community, serving as mayor for 12 years, was a charter member of the Sleepy Eye Lions Club and a past president of the Chamber of Commerce. He served on many boards and service groups in the community, donating many hours of service.
Harry is survived by his wife, Dee Dee Hornbrook of Sleepy Eye; children, Sara Hornbrook of Spring, Tex. and Larry and wife Deborah Hornbrook of The Woodlands, Tex.; grandchild, Amber Hornick of Austin Tex.; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Jones of Austin, Tex. and Lt. Jason Jones USMC, Hawaii; and brother, Robert and wife Joann Hornbrook of Evansville, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Covert and Myrtle; and step-mother, Marie.

Sylvester J. Huiras
Sylvester J. Huiras, 94, Columbia, Mo., died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at South Hampton, Columbia, Mo. Memorial Funeral Home of Columbia, Mo. handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Dr., Columbia, Mo.
Sylvester was born July 13, 1908, in Brown County, the son of John and Barbara (Holm) Huiras. On Oct. 29, 1930, Sylvester married Gertrude Zschetzsche in West Bend, Iowa. He farmed all of his life in Sleepy Eye and retired to Mountain Home, Ark. before moving to Columbia in 1993. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Sylvester is survived by his wife, Gertrude; son, Richard J. Huiras of Houston, Tex.; daughters, Pat Tauer and Kathy Huiras-Bruner, both of Columbia, Ga.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edwin Huiras and Joseph Huiras; and sisters, Catherine Berkner and Mathilda Filzen.
