Verla Ruth Marti, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at her home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Verla was born March 15, 1915, on the family farm east of Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Ben and Ella (Berkner) Schultz. She grew up and attended school in Sleepy Eye, graduating in 1933. She attended nurses training for one year in Minneapolis before returning to Sleepy Eye where she worked as a hired girl to help young mothers. Verla married Oliver Marti on March 10, 1936, at the family farm. She started the Brown County Junior Holstein Association, that later grew into the Minnesota State Junior Holstein Association. Verla was a member and past president of the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Progressive Homemaker Extension Group. She was a Sunday School superintendent and teacher for many years. Verla was a member and past president of WSCS (Women's Society of Christian Service) which is now the UMW. She was a 4-H club leader for many years, as well as MN State Outstanding 4-H Club leader. Verla was chairman of many church and school fund raising meals, enjoyed crafts, cooking and baking cookies.
Verla is survived by her husband, Oliver Marti of Sleepy Eye; children and their spouses, Roger and Marsha Marti, James and Marcia Jo Marti, Floyd and Brenda Marti, all of Sleepy Eye, Shirley and Charles Cuykendall of Freeville, N.Y., grandchildren, Cheryl Marti, Joren and Cammie Marti, Jill and Brian Nelson, Nathan Marti, Daniel, Thomas and Alisa Marti, Denise and Greg Johanson, Rachelle Marti and fiancee Jim Hunnicutt, Brian Cuykendall and fiancee Kelly Birgfeld, Christel and David Donlick and Jason and Cindy Cuykendall; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Glayd Marti of Sleepy Eye, Gladys Marti of Alexandria and Dorothy Romberg of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Julius Zaske; brother, Benjamin Darwin and Irene Schultz.
Casket bearers were Dan Marti, Tom Marti, Brian Nelson, Nathan Marti, Loren Marti, Greg Johanson, Brian Cuykendall and Jason Cuykendall.

Francis M. Soukup, 76, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery with full military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Francis was born March 14, 1925, in Home Township, Brown County, the son of Michael and Bertha (Kachelmeier) Soukup. He grew up and attended country school in Home Township and later St. Mary's School, Sleepy Eye. Francis served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1946. He returned to Sleepy Eye, where he operated a livestock trucking business. Francis married Delores Kuebler on Oct. 22, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They made their home and farmed north of Sleepy Eye until 1995, when they retired and moved to Sleepy Eye. Francis also drove truck for Del Monte for many years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was active in the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard, VFW and American Legion. Francis enjoyed playing cards, farming, antique tractors and visiting with friends and relatives.
Francis is survived by his wife, Delores Soukup of Sleepy Eye; son, Patrick Soukup of Sleepy Eye; brother, Clarence Soukup of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Evelyn Zenk of Bird Island and Verna Scharfencamp of Franklin; sister-in-law, Leona and husband Don Allen of Wittier, Calif; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wendelin; sister, Irene; sister-in-law, Myra Soukup; and brothers-in-law, Paul Scharfencamp and Sylvester Zenk.

Edward "Ed" A. Haas, 61, Minneapolis, formerly of Sleepy Eye and Fairmont, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery with military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Edward was born Dec. 24, 1939, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Henry and Frieda (Schroepfer) Haas. He grew up and attended school in Sleepy Eye. Ed returned to the Sleepy Eye area, and on Oct. 2, 1965, he married Darlene Johnson in New Ulm. He worked for his brother in sales for a short time before going to work for Kraft Foods in New Ulm and later Sky Line Mobile Homes in New Ulm. Ed also worked for Mark IV Homes in Fairmont and helped his brother, Rich with auctioneering. He later worked at Fairmont Foods. Ed enjoyed fishing, and was a member of Bass Seekers in Fairmont.
Ed is survived by his daughters and their spouses, Janet and Steve Sparks of Ceylon, Julie and John Beaumaster of Eagan, and Jean and Dave Mosloski of Fairmont; seven grandchildren; mother, Frieda Haas of Sleepy Eye; brothers and sisters, Jim Haas of Daytona Beach, Fla., Tom and Darleen Haas of Camarillo, Calif., Lynette and Dennis Braun of Sleepy Eye, Rich and Joan Haas of Mankato, and Phil and Yvonne Haas of White Bear Lake; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother in infancy.
Honorary casket bearers were Jon Haas, Dean Braun, Pat Welter, Duane Ristau, Mike Haas, Steve Braun and Gerald Sellner.

Louis Bergum, 92, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Albion Lutheran Church, rural St. James, with interment in Albion Lutheran Cemetery, St. James with military honors by St. James Rifle and Honor Squad. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Louis was born June 29, 1909, in Albin Township, to Syver and Mina (Tande) Bergum. He grew up and attended country school in Albin Township, after which he farmed with his brother, Gilbert. He served during WWII in the United States Army as a surgical technician in the South Pacific from 1942 until 1945. After the war, Louis returned home, continuing to farm with his brother Gilbert until his retirement in 1980. Louis was the father figure and helped raise his sister's (Minnie Hendrickson) six children. After marrying Grace Wick in 1990, they moved from the farm to Countryside Apartments in Sleepy Eye. Louis was a life long member of Albion Lutheran Church and a member of American Legion Post #33 and VFW Post #1914. He enjoyed traveling and dancing.
Louis is survived by his wife, Grace Bergum of Sleepy Eye; his sister's (Minnie Hendrickson's) children, Cynthia and husband Dale Wegner of Waseca, Sharon and husband Jerry Helling of Hanska, Kathleen and husband Howard Brekke of St. James, Robert and wife JoAnn Hendrickson of Godahl, Gwendolyn and husband Toby Schmid of Sleepy Eye and Suzanne and husband John Kelly of Brooklyn Center; nieces and nephews, Mary Ann and husband Wally Trebesch of Sleepy Eye, Inez and husband Roland Polkow of Springfield, Jane Stelzer of Welcome and Ivan and wife Eloise Finstad of Hanska. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Josephine Olson, Emma Jukulyn, Marie Bergum, Clara Finstad and Minnie Hendrickson; brothers, Selmer and Gilbert Bergum, and two brothers and a sister in infancy.
Casket bearers were Jon Brekke, Richard Trebesch, Paul Kelly, Dan Schmid, Bob Schmid and Tony Wegner.

Eugene C. Kuske, 89, Bloomington, Ind., died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital, Bloomington, Ind. Private family services will be held at a later date in Whittier, Calif.
Eugene was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Lamberton, the son of Albert Fredrick and Della A. (Tiedemann) Kuske. A retired pharmacist, who graduated from South Dakota State University School of Pharmacy in 1934, Eugene owned and operated pharmacies in Minnesota and California until his retirement in 1967. He was also a WWII Navy Veteran. Eugene was a member of Pierre, S.D. Lodge #27 of F&AM, and a member of Al Malaikah Shrine Club of Los Angeles, Calif.
Eugene is survived by sisters, Shirlie (Mr. Cleve) Dreher of Bloomington, Ind. and Gretchen (Mrs. Corwin) Nielsen of Tucson, Ariz.; three nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bette Kuske; sister, Alice Orr; brothers, Howard Kuske and Albert Kuske.

Audrey A. (Mattson) Bryan, 53, of Eau Claire died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Luther Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church with interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Audrey was born Sept. 15, 1948, in LeSueur, the daughter of Conrad and Arline Mattson. She spent most of her growing up years in Sleepy Eye, where her parents taught school. She graduated from St. Olaf College in 1970, with a degree in nursing. She worked for a short time at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis and later as a school nurse in St. Paul. Audrey married Thomas W. Bryan in 1972. Following their marriage they spent one year in Spokane, Wash., where Audrey taught nursing at a technical college. Upon their return to the Twin Cities, she enrolled in the graduate nursing program at the University of Minnesota, from which she received her masters degree in public health and her credential as a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP). In 1977, they moved to Earl, Wisc. Later Audrey moved to the Spooner Clinic, where she practiced as a PNP. In 1985, the family moved to Spooner. The following year, Audrey took a position as assistant professor of nursing at the U of M to pursue her doctorate in nursing. Upon completion of her Ph.D. in 1995, she returned to UW-EL and as promoted to associate professor, where she served until her death. Audrey loved God, her family and her friends. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, art and music and truly loved teaching. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing.
Audrey is survived by her husband, Rev. Thomas Bryan; daughters, Erica and Nicole of Eau Claire; parents, Conrad and Arline Mattson; sisters, Carol and husband Mike Francis, and Becky and husband Ron Kanengieter; brothers, Daniel Mattson, Randy and wife Kathy Mattson, and Ross and wife Kate Mattson; godchildren, Joel and Mariana Francis; and many other nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and colleagues.

John H. McWhorter, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery with full military honors by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
John was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Elkton, S.D., to Leon and Frances (Schweirkt) McWhorter. He served in the United States Army for 20 years during which time he served in the South Pacific in WWII. He married Cecelia "Teddy" Abel on Jan. 31, 1967, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, they resided in Sleepy Eye. John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
John is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Roseann and Herb Huiras of Sleepy Eye, Elaine and Chuck Nalapinski of Stillwater, Mary Wolle of Lake Crystal, and Lois and Alfredo Lee of Honolulu; sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Shirley Abel of Pine, Ariz., Edward Abel, Jim Abel, and Lewis and Eva Abel, all of Sleepy Eye; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Cecelia "Teddy" McWhorter on May 5, 1989.

Harry Portner, 83, New Ulm, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Oak Hills Living Center, New Ulm. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Harry was born Feb. 23, 1918, in Milford Township, Brown County, the son of Edward and Mary (Ubel) Portner. He attended Milford Township Country School. On Feb. 18, 1941, Harry married Arleen Krzmarzick at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, they farmed in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County for 31 years. They moved into New Ulm in 1972 and he retired in 1983. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the St. John's Catholic Aid Society, and the St. John's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He served on the Sigel Creamery Board and the Mid-American Dairy Board in Winthrop.
Harry is survived by his wife, Arleen Portner of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Marge and Denny Clyne, Linda and Neal Smasal, and Julie and Pat Hillesheim, all of New Ulm; and Mary Ellen and Tom Hoffman of Bloomington; sons and daughters-in-law, Pat and Mary Portner, Dave and Darlene Portner and Kevin and Lisa Portner, all of New Ulm, Jerry and Sherry Portner of Eden Prairie, and Ed and Sue Portner of Forest City, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie Sprenger, and Loretta and Linus Krzmarzick, all of New Ulm; and Betty and John Gleisner of Hackensack, Sally and Bill Doyle of Renton, Wash., and Doris and Al Drage of Evan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ervin and Elsie Portner and Norbert and Betty Portner, all of New Ulm; sisters-in-law, Sharon Portner of Arizona, and Jean Portner of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Darlene Portner; and brothers, Robert and Dennis Portner.

Herbert K. Zimmerman, 86, of Sanborn, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services were held Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Herb was born Dec. 19, 1914, in Sanborn, to George and Emma (Haeska) Zimmerman. He attended Sanborn Public School through the eight grade. Herb worked for area farmers as a farm hand for a period of time, worked with the Civil Conservation Corp., being involved with the building of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. On June 16, 1943, he married Leona Brown at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. He continued to work at the Produce Business in Sanborn, during which time he also drove school bus for Sanborn Public School. Later he worked at Wallner Construction in New Ulm and the Toro Plant in Windom where he worked until his retirement. Herb was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Sanborn American Legion. In his early years, Herb enjoyed breaking and training horse teams, going hunting and fishing, reading western books and spending time with his grandchildren.
Herb is survived by his wife, Leona Zimmerman of Sanborn; sons, Gary and wife Sharon Zimmerman of Sleepy Eye and James Zimmerman of Sanborn; daughter, Janice Schmidt of Delft; grandchildren, Brett Anderson of Windom, James Schmidt of Jeffers, Joy Schmidt of Delft and Jennifer Schmidt of Bingham Lake; great-grandchildren, Dustin and Miranda Jensen; brothers, LeRoy and wife Norma Zimmerman of Granite Falls, Virgil and wife Norma Zimmerman of Sanborn, Clinton Zimmerman of Sanborn and Clifford and wife Joyce Zimmerman of Windom. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Leo H. Deterling
Leo H. Deterling, 74, of Raymond, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at his home following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Raymond. Military honors were provided by the Raymond American Legion Post. Peterson Brothers Funeral Home of Willmar handled the arrangements.
Leo was born Aug. 1, 1928, in Green Isle, the son of Elsie (Gorr) and Leo W. Deterling. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Green Isle, confirmed at Fairfax, grew up in the Fairfax community and attended Fairfax schools. For a time he worked for his father in a saw mill business. On Nov. 17, 1950, Leo married Rosella R. Bock in Sleepy Eye. He served stateside with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, Leo and Rosella lived in New Ulm while Leo worked for the Lundin Construction Company. Later, he worked as a mechanic in tractor shops in several Minnesota locations. In 1965, Leo purchased a business in Raymond, which became the Deterling Welding and Repair Company. About 1985, he began work for the Christianson Systems Co. of Blomkest, retiring in 1998. For about four years, Leo and Rosella lived in Baudette before returning to Raymond on Dec. 1. Leo was well known as a concertina player in his own band as well as in other bands in Minnesota. For over 65 years, Leo played the concertina. He was a member of the Raymond Civic and Commercial Club and the Raymond American Legion Post.
Leo is survived by his wife, Rosella; sons, Allen and wife Rose Mary Deterling of Raymond, Dean and wife Joyce Deterling of Clara City and William and wife Sandra Deterling of Raymond; daughter, Myrna Prekker of Longview, Tex.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey Deterling of Baudette; and sister, Marlis Schmidt of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Max Joseph Hoffmann
Max Joseph Hoffmann, 95, St. James, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were Friday at St. James Catholic Church, St. James, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, St. James. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Max was born Feb. 1, 1907, to Maximillian and Anna (Siedel) Hoffmann in Morgan. He graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in Sleepy Eye in 1924, as Salutatorian. In 1939, Max married Adeline Seehusen in Renville. He worked in the produce and creamery business before earning his chief boilers license. He worked at Tony Downs Foods in St. James for 20 years as chief engineer. Following his retirement, Max worked at St. James Catholic Church and Green Giant. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a lifetime KC member and member of several civic organizations. Max enjoyed his family, gardening, fishing, hunting, reading and wine making.
Max is survived by his wife of 63 years, Adeline; children, Joan and husband Ron Humphrey of Pearl, Miss., Karen and husband Richard Meyer of Bloomington, Maxine and husband Jerry Howe of Gibbon, Mary and husband Roger Collins of Stoughton, Wisc., Max John and wife Diane Hoffmann of St. James, Michael and wife Jolene Hoffmann of Avon, Patricia and husband Randy Gall of West Salem, Wisc., and Ruth and husband Larry Mikkelson of Hanska; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Weicherding of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Viola Revier of Olivia and Alice Lankenau of Danube; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings and their spouses; and one grandson.
Casket bearers were Ron Humphrey, Richard Meyer, Jerry Howe, Roger Collins, Randy Gall and Larry Mikkelson. Honorary casket bearers were Joan Humphrey, Maxine Howe, Patricia Gall, Jay Howe, Mitch Hoffmann, Nathan Collins, Justin Hoffmann, Karen Meyer, Mary Collins, Ruth Mikkelson, Brett Howe, Aaron Hoffmann, Ryan Hoffmann and Mikal Mikkelson.

Charles John Kissner
Charles John Kissner, 73, Franklin, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at the Franklin Health Care Center, Franklin. Funeral services were Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Charles was born March 26, 1929, in Eden Township, Brown County, to John H. and Elizabeth M. (Kunze) Kissner. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, confirmed at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan and attended Country School Dist. #58. Charles helped his father and other area farmers with farm work. He lived in Renville County and later became a resident at Franklin Healthcare Center in Franklin. Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, mowing lawns and being outdoors.
Charles is survived by his brother, Curtis Kissner of Springfield; sister, Marlys Schumacher of Springfield and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Warren in 1996; and brother-in-law, Adrian Schumacher.
