Alice Radel
Alice Radel, 76, Evan, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye.
Alice was born July 8, 1926, near Walnut Grove, the daughter of Lilly (Kroschel) and William Maas. She grew up in rural Redwood County and attended District #59 Country School for a few years. She moved with her family to Sleepy Eye, where she attended District #21 Country School, St. John's Parochial School and Sleepy Eye Public High School. After high school, Alice attended Normal School and then taught country school in Evan. She married Donald P. Radel on March 6, 1948, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in rural Sanborn for a few years before moving to a farm south of Evan. They made their home in Evan for many years, where Alice was postmaster for 23 years. Alice was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and was active in the ladies aid. She was also a member of N.A.P.U.S., the National Association of Postmasters. Alice enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Arizona, playing cards and was a 4-H leader when her children were younger. Alice especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Alice is survived by her husband, Don Radel of Evan; children, Gary Radel of Waconia, Carol and husband Dave Jacobson of Wells and Marc and wife Sue Radel of Evan; grandchildren, Jason, Travis, Josh, Jacob and Kevin Radel, Rob and Jeff Jacobson and Laurie Borris; four great-grandchildren; and brothers, Gilbert and wife Mildred Maas and Lester and wife Lois Maas, all of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lucille Neal; and daughter-in-law, Janice Radel.
Casket bearers were Jason Radel, Rob Jacobson, Jeff Jacobson, Travis Radel, Josh Radel, Jacob Radel and Kevin Radel.

Herbert Remiger
Herbert Remiger, 76, Wabasso, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Valley View Manor, Lamberton. Funeral services were held at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso with interment in the church cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Victor Hirsch American Legion Post of Wabasso. Sunset Burial Association of Wabasso handled the arrangements.
Herbert Frank Remiger was born Friday, March 12, 1926, near Sleepy Eye, to Harry and Mary (Seidl) Remiger. He moved with his family to the Wabasso area in 1937. Herb attended country school near Sleepy Eye and then St. Anne's Parochial School in Wabasso. He entered the U.S. Army serving during WWII in Germany as a Military Policeman. On June 24, 1952 Herbert was united in marriage to Joan Zemler at St. Gabrielā's Catholic Church in Fulda. They lived and farmed near Wabasso until Herbert had a stroke in 1979. He also cut cottonwood trees and made them into lumber with his family as well as driving road grader in Vail Township for a number of years. Herb and Joan moved into Wabasso where he continued to live until entering Valley View Manor in Lamberton. He was an active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and the Victor Hirsch American Legion Post in Wabasso. He loved to fish, hunt mushrooms, collect tractors and had a large muskmelon patch. Herbert's family and farming were always his first love in life.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan; children, Mary and husband Ken Gasser of St. Cloud, Mike and wife Carole Remiger of Wabasso, Joe and wife Colleen Remiger of Wabasso, Rosie and husband Joe VanMeveren of Lucan, Rita and husband Kevin Merschman of Backus and Jean Fleischer of Wabasso. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Karen Beebout, Jerry Remiger, Jesse Remiger, Jason Peterson, Stacy Peterson, Craig Remiger, Kristina Prchal, Jamie Gasser, Dustin Prchal, Aaron Fleischer and Ryan Fleischer; great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Kelsey and Jarret Beebout, Mason Brown and Mackenzie Duscher, and sister, Lucille and husband Louis Plaetz of Wabasso; and sister-in-law, Louise and husband John Rice of Hanley Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Walter, Melvin and Harry Remiger Jr.

Richard "Dick" A. Anderson
Richard "Dick" A. Anderson, 80, Brainerd, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village, Brainerd. Funeral services were Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Brainerd with interment in the Vaale Cemetery, Brainerd. Full military rites were conducted by American Legion Post No. 255.
Dick was born March 30, 1922, in Meeker County, the son of Arthur and Maybelle (Larson) Anderson. He moved to Brainerd with his family in 1937 and was employed in the construction business. Dick enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was stationed in Attu, Alaska. He was honorably discharged in October, 1945. Dick married Evelyn Tracy. He continued to work in construction until 1951, when he went into the trucking business. He owned and operated a service garage and Anderson Truck Line. In 1968, he became a dealer for International Harvester. Dick retired in 1984, made his home in Brainerd and wintered in Arizona. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Brainerd and the American Legion.
Dick is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Tracy) Anderson of Brainerd; sons, Rick and wife Karen Anderson of Staples; Robert and wife Carol Anderson of St. Mathias; and Steve and wife Julie Anderson of Richmond Hill, Ga; daughters, Lynda and husband Rev. David Laechel of Harmony (formally of Sleepy Eye) and Susan and husband, Greg Albertson of Brainerd; brothers, Harlan Anderson of Brainerd; and Art and wife Betty Anderson of Dassel; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.

Elroy Albert Backer
Elroy Albert Backer, 74, rural New Ulm, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday at the United Church of Christ, New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Elroy was born Oct. 6, 1928, in Milford Township, the son of Roy and Ella (Rolloff) Backer. He attended District #8 Country School in Milford Township and graduated from New Ulm Public High School. He had lived on his family's home farm all of his life up until two months ago when he became a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center. Elroy had farmed the land for many years, but most recently he became known for the pumpkins that he grew and sold to various places. His farm became known as Mr. B's Pumpkin King Ranch. He loved to see children smile and had been the areas Santa Claus for many years. Elroy was a member of the United Church of Christ, New Ulm, Izaak Walton League, the Deer Hunters Association, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and many other wildlife organizations.
Elroy is survived by his niece, Sandra Johnson of Spokane, Wash.; nephews, Mark Rasmussen of Sleepy Eye; Fred and wife Jane Rasmussen of Evan; Paul Jr. and wife Linda Rasmussen of Benld, Ill.; brother-in-law, Paul Sr. and wife Jane Rasmussen of Sleepy Eye; a nephew-in-law, Bill Gorman of Arcadia, Ca.; 11 great nieces and nephews; and five great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Oradell Rasmussen; niece, Rita Gorman; and nephew-in-law, Todd Johnson.

Marcella "Sally" Rose Bollig
Marcella "Sally" Rose Bollig, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at New Ulm Medical Center, New Ulm. Funeral services were Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Sally was born March 21, 1919, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Henry and Frances (Riederer) Krzmarzick. She grew up in Sleepy Eye and later married Charles J. Bollig on Oct. 28, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Sally worked at the Orchid Inn, Del Monte, and as a med tech at the Sleepy Eye Care Center. Sally was a very active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and she was also a member of the C.C.W., Christian Mothers, Catholic Aid Association, Legion Auxiliary and the Sleepy Eye Golf Club. She enjoyed flower gardening, especially raising and drying roses and making floral arrangements. Sally also enjoyed playing cards and volunteering for many area organizations.
Sally is survived by her children, John and wife City Bollig of Shakopee, Robert and wife Linda Bollig of Minneapolis, Mark and wife Susan Bollig of Franktown, Colo., Joan Bollig of Seattle, Wash., and Mary Kay and husband Mike Van Allen of Lakewood, Colo.; grandchildren, Laura, Brian and David Bollig, LaKaysa, Charlie and Anna Bollig, Katie Ann, Krista and Taylor Van Allen, and April and Melissa Bollig; great-grandson, Dylan Rademacher; sisters, Sister Rosita Krzmarzick of Rochester, Hildie Callanan of Springfield and Bernice Eckstein of Sleepy Eye; and brother, Arthur Krzmarzick of Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; son, Richard; infant son, Tom; brothers, Robert and Frederick; and sisters, Viola, Lucille, Gertrude, Elizabeth and Florence.

Charlotte Lucille Christensen
Charlotte Lucille Christensen, 84, McAllen, Tex., died Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Funeral services were Friday at Central Christian Church, McAllen, with interment in Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, McAllen. Virgil Wilson Mortuary of McAllen handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to either Central Christian Church of Central Christian School, 1320 Nolana, McAllen Tex. 78501.
Charlotte was born July 16, 1918, to Rudolph and Hulda Jensen of Sleepy Eye. She obtained her teaching certificate and taught school in a one-room school house in the late 1930s in rural Minnesota. Charlotte married Marvin P. Christensen in June of 1940 and they spent 30 wonderful years in the New Ulm and Sleepy Eye area, where Charlotte was a housewife and worked in school and hospital clerical positions. Throughout her life, Charlotte was very active in church, school and charity volunteer work. In 1972, Marvin and Charlotte moved to McAllen where they created, developed and sold the large Colonia McAllen Subdivision on the southwest side of McAllen. They provided financing so that hundreds of entry-level buyers could get into their first home. Charlotte was active in the Central Christian Church, where she taught bible study. She was treasurer for the church Spirit Lifters group. She was treasurer of the volunteers at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital Auxiliary for many years, and was named volunteer of the year for 1999. Charlotte was secretary for the Zodiac Book Review Club and treasurer for the Current Events Club.
Charlotte is survived by sister, Betty and husband John Harper of Plymouth; sons, Curtis and wife Sandra Christensen of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and John Christensen of Sparks, Nev.; grandsons, Craig and wife Vonnie Christensen of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Andrew Christensen of Austin, Tex. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Marvin who died in 1990.

Lois Margaret Flor
Lois Margaret Flor, 80, New Richland, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea. Funeral services were Wednesday at The Catholic Church of All Saints in New Richland, with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Friedrich Funeral Home of New Richland handled the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Waseca Area Hospice for New Richland residents.
Lois was born Dec. 18, 1922, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of John and Ann (Kockelmeyer) Ganske. She was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary's High School, Sleepy Eye, and attended the Minnesota School of Business in St. Paul. On Sept. 3, 1943, Lois was united in marriage to Albert G. Flor in Sleepy Eye. For three years, they were stationed at various military bases while Albert served with the U.S. Army as a dental officer. In 1946, upon discharge from the Army, they moved to New Richland when Albert purchased his dental practice. They are members of The Church of All Saints, where Lois had been active in the Rosary Society, the church guild and All Saints CCW. Lois was also very interested in the community. She was a member of the Albert Lea Civic Music Organization, Minnesota Dental Association Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. Her involvement in the lives of her children was most precious to her. She was an avid golfer, reader, bridge player and enjoyed fishing, interior decorating and bingo. Lois also had a great interest in business and politics.
Lois is survived by her husband, Albert of New Richland; children, Dr. A. David Flor of Albert Lea, Dr. John Michael Flor and wife Jacquelyn of Blooming Prairie, Judith Ann Anderson and husband Roger of Lake Crystal, Bradley James Flor and wife Katherine of New Richland, Dr. Timothy Jon Flor and wife Margaret of Waseca, Elizabeth Marie Phillips and husband Ryan of New Richland, and Jennifer Mary Dunnette and fiance, Dave "Sharkey" of New Richland; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lyle (Myrna) Ganske of Brea, Calif., Collette VanDeBogart of Elkhorn, Wis., James and wife Maxine Ganske of Sleepy Eye, Joan and husband Kenneth Jensen of Sanborn, Mary Jane Koessler of New Ulm, Maureen and husband Pete DeRosier of Burlington, Wis., and Tom and wife Karen Ganske of Sleepy Eye; brother-in-law, Bernard Linnihan of Waseca; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, George; granddaughter, Angela Christine Anderson; sister, Mildred Linnihan; and brothers, James Koessler and James VanDeBogart.

Robert J. "Bob" LeGare
Robert J. "Bob" LeGare, 78, rural Lafayette, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at his home. Funeral services were Monday at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church, New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Full military rites were conducted by Lafayette American Legion Post #300. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Bob was born June 29, 1924, in Klossner, the son of Phillip and Valeria (Schwendinger). He moved with his family to Comfrey in 1928, and graduated from Comfrey High School in 1943. He also attended the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture for two years. On July 9, 1943, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorable discharged on April 17, 1946. On Jan. 9, 1952, Bob married Melinda Ann Hacker at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church in New Ulm. After marriage, they lived in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County for one year before moving to Franklin, living there for five years. They then returned to the farm site in Bernadotte Township. Bob had been a dairy farmer and in ag management for 40 y ears in Bernadotte Township. He was a member of The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church, the Knights of Columbus Society in New Ulm, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #300 in Lafayette and a member of the Boy Scouts Committee in Lafayette.
Bob is survived by his wife, Melinda (Hacker) LeGare of rural Lafayette; daughters, Kathleen and husband Dan Davis of Visalia, Calif., Jo Ann LeGare and Tom Solfelt both of Burnsville, Susan and husband Brian Gulden of Rochester and Jeanie LeGare of Monticello; son, Dennis and wife Eileen LeGare of New Ulm; sister, Catherine (Mrs. Roy) Samalaska of Madelia, and Mary and husband Denis Schmitz of Sanborn; brothers, Joe LeGare of Mankato, Phil and wife Doreen LeGare of Redwood Falls, Theodore and wife Marion LeGare of Hector, Dick and wife Gladys LeGare of New Ulm, Vince and wife Darlene LeGare of Minneota, and Jim and wife Sharon LeGare of Lindstrom, nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Valeria LeGare; son in infancy, Joseph LeGare; daughter in infancy, Elizabeth Ann LeGare; brother, Father Paul LeGare; sister, Elizabeth (Sister Valeria) LeGare, Order of the Christian Charity; sister-in-law, Bernice LeGare; brother-in-law, Roy Samalaska; and nephew, Steve Samalaska.

Georgene "G.G." Gwendelin Rothmeier
Georgene "G.G." Gwendelin Rothmeier, 59, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. Funeral services were Tuesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
G.G. was born Oct. 4, 1943, in Tampa Bay, Fla., the daughter of George and Adeline (Grams) Ubl. Around her first birthday, she moved with her family to Sleepy Eye, and later attended St. John Lutheran School, graduating from Sleepy Eye Public High School. She attended Beauty School in Mankato. On June 2, 1963, G.G. married Richard Weilage at St. John Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye and the couple farmed in rural Sleepy Eye. G.G. worked as a beautician for 35 years in various shops in the Sleepy Eye area and most recently, she worked at the Cenex Convenience Store. On May 1, 1987, G.G. married Raymond Rothmeier and they remained in Sleepy Eye. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a member of the Legion Auxiliary. G.G. loved helping others and always let the needs of others come first. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, working on craft projects and sewing. G.G. looked forward to reuniting with her father, husband, and other loved ones that have passed on before her.
G.G. is survived by her children, Suzanne Marie and husband Tom Jensen of Sleepy Eye, Michelle Myree Weilage and special friend Leonard Hauser of Essig, Kristine Maree and husband Brad Bode of Sleepy Eye, and Michael and wife Stephanie Weilage of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Ryan Gehrke, Erica Jensen, Carly Jensen, Krystle Weilage, Benjamin Bode, and Mikyla and Randy Weilage; step-children, Kim Kleinwachter, Vicky Steffl, Amy Houchens, Mike Rothmeier and Rick Rothmeier; step-grandchildren; mother, Adeline Ubl; and sister, Cynthia (Cindy) and husband Roger Schneider of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her father, George Ubl; husband, Raymond G. Rothmeier; and a step-grandson.
Casket bearers were Arnie Hinderman, Rich Zuhlsdorf, Mike Zuhlsdorf, Rick Mages, Larry Tessmer and Rick Tessmer. Honorary casket bearers were Richard Weilage, Rick Rothmeier, Matt Krieger, Dean Meinhart, Mike Rothmeier, Tom Kleinwachter, Erick Houchens and Ed Treml.

Rosalia Ann (Mrs. John) Zwaschka
Rosalia Ann (Mrs. John) Zwaschka, 84, rural Comfrey, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Springfield Medical Center Hospital. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Comfrey, with interment in the church cemetery. Organist for the service was Jane Altenhofen and hymns were sung by St. Raphael's Choir.
Rosalia was born March 24, 1919, in Eden Township, Brown County, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Gewerth) Mathiowetz. She attended country school in Eden Township and St. Mary's Boarding School. Following school, Rosalia worked at home until her marriage to J. John Zwaschka on June 14, 1937, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They made their home on the family farm in Adrian Township, Watonwan County. Rosalia worked as a teachers aid at St. Paul's Catholic School and part-time at Colburn's Store. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, and has been a long-time member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. Rosalia was part of the Christian Mothers and St. Mary's Society in Comfrey. She enjoyed education, traveling and was proud of having traveled to all 50 states, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, all after the age of 51. In the winter, she embroidered "personal memory" quilts and in the summer, she liked working in the flower gardens and spending time on the swing. Rosalia liked family gatherings, especially Christmas. She was a marvelous cook and was famous for her caramel rolls and chocolate chip cookies. At the age of 79, she completed one of her lifetime goals when she was granted her GED in 1998. Rosalia liked to play scrabble, reading to the family, especially her grandchildren, and could quote a poem for any occasion.
Rosalia is survived by her husband, John of Comfrey; sons, Kenneth and wife Mary Ann Zwaschka of Des Moines, Iowa and Michael and wife Tina Zwaschka of Minneapolis; daughters, Marilyn Zwaschka of Comfrey, Diane and husband Ned Arnsdorf of Sanborn, Jeanie Zwaschka of Breezy Point, and Lois Zwaschka of Hutchinson; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Clarence and wife Anne Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye; Harold and wife Lucille Mathiowetz of Olivia, Joseph C. and wife Shirley Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye, and Robert and wife Mitzie Mathiowetz of Rogers; sisters, Loretta Mathiowetz of Fairmont, Angela Hornick of San Francisco, Calif., and Evelyn Betts of Fairmont; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Mathiowetz of Hector and Marie Mathiowetz of Clements. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raymond Mathiowetz, Leo Mathiowetz and Norbert Mathiowetz; and a sister in infancy.
Casket bearers were Bob Sprenger, Delwin Junker, Brad Sprenger, Jim Schneider, Dave Raney and Dr. Herbert Holman.
