Evelyn H. Petersen
Evelyn H. Petersen, 94, Appleton, Wis., died Saturday, March 22, 2003. Funeral services were Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, New Ulm.
Evelyn was born Jan. 2, 1909, in Home Township, Brown County, Minnesota, the daughter of the late Otto and Amelia Orth. She married Albert Petersen on Sept. 28, 1927. After their marriage, they farmed in Home Township until 1972, and continued to live there until 1990, when they moved to Wisconsin to be closer to their daughters. Evelyn was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church of Appleton and a former member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Evelyn loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished every moment with them. She enjoyed knitting, embroidering and playing cards.
Evelyn is survived by daughters, Marian and husband Herbert Grams, LaDonna and husband Floyd Schwecke and Linda and husband Dan Gigstead; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Adeline and husband Bernard Lange; four sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.
Ida Martha Schwartz
Ida Martha Schwartz, 88, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, March 23, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services are Thursday, March 27, 11 a.m., at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home is handled the arrangements.
Ida was born Nov. 22, 1914, in Willow Township, Redwood County, to August and Anna (Lapschis) Krueger. She attended country school in Willow Township. On Sept. 6, 1937, she married Franklin Schwartz at Trinity Lutheran Church in Willow Lake Township. After marriage they farmed in Leavenworth Township for many years. Ida was a charter member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Her faith was the most important aspect of her life. She enjoyed her family, cooking, gardening and observing the planting and harvesting of crops each year.
She is survived by sons, David Schwartz of Sleepy Eye, Tom and wife Sue Schwartz of Apple Valley, Douglas Schwartz of Sleepy Eye and Darryl and wife Nanette Schwartz of Sleepy Eye; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, son-in-law, Chuck Schewe of Sleepy Eye; sister, Elsie Werner of Wabasso and numerous sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Franklin; daughters, Elaine, Shirley and Clarice; brothers, Walter, August, Helmuth, Paul, Louis, William and Edwin; sisters, Ella, Esther, Leona and a brother and sister in infancy.
Leona Baird
Leona Baird, 89, Roseville, formerly of the Sleepy Eye area, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at the Eagle Crest Assisted Living Center in Roseville. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Prairieville Cemetery.
Leona was born Aug. 21, 1913, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Albert and Martha (Simonsen) Christensen. She graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1931. She then went on for a years training in Sleepy Eye for normal school. Leona taught at Eden Township Country School for several years. She then moved to Minneapolis with her sister Hazel and went to work for Merrill Lynch for 40 years. In the 1950s, she was transferred to Chicago, where she married Jack Baird in 1960. Leona and her sister Hazel moved back to Roseville upon her retirement from Merrill Lynch. Leona remained in Roseville until her death.
Leona is survived by her nieces and nephews, Dean Christensen of New Brighton, Dennis Christensen of Little Falls, Barbra Eden of California, William (Bill) Ericksen of Burnsville, Kathy Schultz of Mankato, Cindy Ericksen of Lake City, Jack Brady of Baltimore, Md. and Michael Brady of Jay, Vt. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Martha (Simonsen) Christensen; husband, Jack Baird; brother, Reynold (Chris) Christensen; sisters, Sylvia Ericksen, Loraine Brady and Hazel Christensen; and niece, Patti Jones.
Amelia B. Schroepfer Heitzer
Amelia B. Schroepfer Heitzer, 96, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home. Funeral services were Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Amelia was born Feb. 16, 1907, to Christ and Mariana (Schloegl) Sellner, in Albin Township. On Feb. 1, 1927, Amelia married Felix Schroepfer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Felix preceded her in death on July 9, 1941. Amelia married Anton Heitzer on Sept. 9, 1946 and the couple made their home in Sleepy Eye. Amelia worked at A.J. Pietrus for 50 years in Sleepy Eye. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Aid Association and Christian Mothers. She enjoyed crocheting, fishing and gardening.
Amelia is survived by her sons, Ollie and wife Dorothy Schroepfer of New Ulm and Dutch and wife Bev Schroepfer of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Leonard Sellner of Sleepy Eye and Clement and wife Dorothy Sellner of Sleepy Eye; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Clara Schroepfer of Sleepy Eye, Kate and husband Harold Johnson of Madelia, Angie Weber of Gibbon and Ann Hacker of Lafayette. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Felix Schroepfer and Anton Heitzer; brothers, William Sellner, Albert Sellner, Christ Sellner, Edmund Sellner and Florian Sellner; and sisters, Mary Moldan, Mathilda Blumhoefner, Martha Weber and Bertha Muehlbauer.
Virgil J. Deibele
Virgil J. Deibele, 80, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Virgil was born Dec. 23, 1922, in New Ulm, the son of Joseph and Vera (Strolke) Deibele. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1940. Virgil entered the United States Navy and served during WWII in the South Pacific. His ship was the first to land at Hiroshima, Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped. After his discharge, Virgil returned to Sleepy Eye and married Elaine Maurer on Feb. 6, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The couple made their home in St. Paul, where Virgil worked at Western Electric for a few years. They later returned to Sleepy Eye and Virgil worked for Del Monte for 35 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the VFW and American Legion, had coached junior high basketball at St. Mary's and was a Boy Scout troupe leader. Virgil enjoyed following his grandchildren's sporting events, watching comedy and history programs, reading history books, scrapbooking, dining out, listening to scripture, his dogs and sitting in the warm sun.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Elaine Deibele of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Dawn Deibele of Sleepy Eye, Diane Deibele and husband Jon Pederson of Minneapolis, Denice and husband Gary Teipel of Mankato, Debbie and husband Greg Braulick of Sleepy Eye, and Mary and husband Bill Bruess of Minneapolis; sons, Dan and wife Barb Deibele of Long Prairie and Dean and wife Chris Deibele of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Jesse and Justin Deibele, Collin and Dilcia Pederson, Hayley Teipel, Brett, Brynn, Brian and Bronte« Braulick, Ryan, Brooks, Cole, Jacob and Allie Deibele; and Tara, Tyler, Trevor and Talia Bruess; brother, Linus "Doc" and Marilyn Deibele of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Virginia Bruggeman of Sleepy Eye and Patricia Hurley of St. Paul. Robert Fischer
Mass of Christian Burial for Robert (Bob) Fischer, 69, was held Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at St. Louis Rey Mission in California. Formerly from the Comfrey area, Robert died on Monday, June 2, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Doris; brothers, sisters and their spouses, Jean and Ambrose Nosbush of Fairfax, Richard and Pat Fischer of Denver, Colo., Marilyn and James Klein of Wilmington, N.C., Phyllis and Phillip Shaw of Traverse City, Mich., and Jerry and Diana Fischer of Springfield.
Helen Louise Lochner
Helen Louise Lochner, 57, Edina and formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, with her family at her side. Funeral services were Monday at Sturm Funeral Home with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
Helen was born Feb. 5, 1946, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Hugo and Anna (Trebesch) Lochner. She grew up in Sleepy Eye and was baptized and confirmed at. St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Helen graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1963 and then attended D.M.L.C. in New Ulm, where she received her teaching degree. She taught at Wisconsin Synod Elementary Schools in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota, most recently at Salem Lutheran in Loretto. After retiring from teaching, Helen worked at Quality Lincoln Mercury in Bloomington and currently was working at Whitaker Lincoln Mercury in Inver Grove Heights. Helen was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. She dearly loved her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She spent alot of time with them and traveled with them to several areas of the world. Helen was an avid reader and had a large collection of music boxes.
Helen is survived by her brothers, William and wife Carol Lochner of Sleepy Eye,, and Andrew and wife Rita Lochner of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Violet and husband David Eichers of New Brighton and Viola and husband Stephen Gericke of Arden Hills; nieces and nephews, Derek Lochner, Susan Ahlness, Dan Lochner, Darren Lochner, Debbie Lochner, Sharon Gericke, Catherine Eichers, Dean Lochner, Sandra Carlson and Brian Eichers; and six great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo and Ann Lochner.
Myrtle Mabel Nelson
Myrtle Mabel Nelson, 91, St. James, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James. Funeral services were Monday at First Lutheran Church in St. James, with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sturm Funeral Home.
Myrtle was born Jan. 26, 1912, to John and Maren (Froslan) Wright on their family farm in Rosendale Township, where she grew up. She was one of 13 children. Myrtle was the first in her family to graduate from St. James High School in 1932, by working for her room and board. Myrtle married Ervin Nelson on April 16, 1934 in St. James. They lived in St. James and on several farm sites before settling on the Nelson home farm in 1940. Ervin died suddenly on May 18, 1949. Myrtle continued to farm and raise her four children, cattle, hogs and many chickens. Myrtle suffered a stroke in December of 1992, and moved to Homestead Cooperative in January of 1994. She enjoyed making cinnamon rolls and buns no one can match. Myrtle spent her time knitting, crocheting and sewing. Myrtle also spent many hours working at church making lefsa, working with the ladies at workshops, bazaars and funerals. She was clerk of District 14 School, a member of Eltradettes Extension Club, Primrose Garden Club and an adult leader of the Nifty Thrifty 4-H Club for over 20 years. She also took up bowling when most people are retiring. Myrtle entered Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in January of 2002. The joy of her life ws spending time with her brother, sisters, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Edmund Romberg
Edmund Romberg, 87, Banning, Calif., died May 11, 2003. Funeral services were held in Banning May 16.
Ed was born July 30, 1915, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Frank and Minnie (Miller) Romberg. He graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1931. Ed worked on the family farm before moving to California where he worked in shipyards and other various jobs. He was in real estate for 25 years. Ed married Rhonelda (Pat) Petrick in 1944. They lived in Banning for 50 years.
Ed his survived by his wife, Pat; sons, Stephen and wife Sue Romberg and Brian, all of Banning, and David and wife Cyndi Romberg of Soldotna, Alaska; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Wright of Sleepy Eye and Alma Romberg of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Willard Romberg and Walter and wife Emily Romberg, all of Sleepy Eye; two nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Herbert; sister, Marie; half-brother, Elmer and half-sister, Ruth Tessmer.
Evelyn Anna Schultz
Evelyn Anna Schultz, 89, Mountain Lake, died June 4, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Village Nursing Home. Funeral services were Saturday at First Lutheran Church, St. James, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, St. James. Pease Funeral Home of St. James handled the arrangements.
Evelyn was born June 21, 1913, in Galena Township, Martin County, the daughter of Henry and Martha (Hilgendorf) Syverson. She was baptized on July 13, 1913, and attended District 67 Country School. She was confirmed on Nov. 7, 1926, at Long Lake Lutheran Church. Her marriage to Joseph Schultz took place Feb. 23, 1933, at the St. James Catholic Church parsonage. Evelyn had worked as a housekeeper at Tony Downs Foods, the Boston Hotel, St. James Dry Cleaners, Devens Dry cleaners, Sherr-Tumico and in the meat department of the Super Value grocery store in St. James for 22 years. Evelyn was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in St. James and enjoyed sewing for the missions. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, reading, music and watching television. Evelyn entered the nursing home in May of 2001. Joseph Schultz died on Feb. 14, 2002.
Evelyn is survived by sons, Gerald and wife Delores Schultz, Richard and wife Carolyn Schultz, Eugene and wife Judy Schultz, all of St. James, and Robert Schultz and special friend Dee Harmon of Forest Lake, Calif., grandchildren, Rick Schultz of Sartell, Linda and husband Darrell Schultze and Kimberly Thompson, all of St. James; Michael and wife Lisa Schultz of Lake Crystal and Michelle Martinez of Orange County, Calif.; step-grandson, Mark Hepler of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice Stauffer of St. James; sister-in-law, Irene Syverson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Cecil; brother Clifford Syverson; and grandson, Dustin.
Casket bearers were Michael Schultz, Rick Schultz, Darrell Schultz, Tom Stauffer, Brad Stauffer and Lester Westlund. Honorary casket bearers were Donald Schultz and Wayne Olson.
Erwin J. Hillesheim
Erwin J. Hillesheim, 85, New Ulm, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Funeral services were Wednesday at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to New Ulm Area Catholic Schools, the American Heart Association and the Diabetes Association.
Erwin was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Sigel Township, Brown County, to John A. and Lillian (Berg) Hillesheim. He married Elaine Hindermann on Sept. 28, 1943, at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church in New Ulm. After marriage, they farmed in Sigel Township until 1984, when they moved to New Ulm. Erwin remained active in farming with his sons until his death. He was a member of The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the St. Patrick's Council of th Knights of Columbus and the St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council. Erwin served on District #6 and #179 School Board, AMPI Board and the Farm City Hub Club, where he received the Service to Agriculture Award. He was also instrumental in building the Sigel Ball park. Erwin was a loving husband and father who enjoyed time with his grandchildren, farming, fishing, hunting, dancing, old time music, bowling, card playing, visiting and having coffee with his friends.
