Clarence and Pearl Zupfer
Clarence Zupfer, 78 and Pearl Zupfer, 67, husband and wife, New Ulm, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester of natural causes.
Funeral services were Monday at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldier's Rest Section. Full Military Honors were conducted at the cemetery for Clarence by the New Ulm Veteran's Organizations. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Clarence was born March 16, 1925, in Milroy to Nick and Julia (Bolger) Zupfer. Pearl was born Dec. 17, 1935, in Cottonwood to Chancey and Nora (Pettijohn) Smith. Clarence Served in the United States Navy during WWII. They were married on June 30, 1952, in Milroy. After marriage they farmed in rural Milroy. They moved to New Ulm in 1968, where Clarence worked for Kraft Foods until he retired. Pearl worked at various restaurants in the New Ulm area. They were members of The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm and Clarence was also a member of the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm.
They are survived by their daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Randy Mack and Julie and Brian Pfarr, all of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Karen Zupfer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dave and Teresa Zupfer of Lewisville, Mike Zupfer of New Ulm, John Zupfer of Mankato, Joe and Patricia Zupfer of New Ulm and Rob and Jill Zupfer of New Ulm; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Clarence is survived by his brothers, Dr. Charles Zupfer of Zumbrota, James Zupfer of Savannah, Ga. and Thomas Zupfer of Oren, Utah. Pearl is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Louis Rogge of Chicago Heights, Ill., Dora and Dennis Warburton of Crete, Ill., and Beatrice and Jim Minelli of Steger, Ill.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clayton and Cheryl Smith and Robert Smith, all of Steger, Ill. They were both preceded in death by their parents; and a son, Ricky Zupfer on Jan. 25, 1981. Clarence was preceded in death by two brothers. Pearl was preceded in death by two sisters; and one brother.

Martha C. Cleary
Martha C. Cleary, 89, Omaha, Nebr., died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at St. Joseph Villa in Omaha. A Memorial Mass was held Saturday at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Bellevue, Nebr., with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Bethany Funeral Home of LaVista, Nebr. handled the arrangements. Memorials are requested to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
Martha was born June 21, 1914, in Stuart, Nebr., the daughter of Bernard and Theresa Kaup. She attended and graduated form Stuart High School, attended Wayne State Teacher's College and taught for seven years in rural Holt County Schools. Martha married Clement Cleary at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stuart on May 15, 1939. They lived in Omaha for six years before moving to Atkinson, Nebr., where Clement owned the Cleary Market and Locker Plant with his brother. In 1956, the family moved to Sleepy Eye, where they owned and operated the Sleepy Eye Locker for 11 years. Clement died in 1978. Martha was an active member of her church and was a volunteer at both nursing homes and at the Senior Citizens Center in Sleepy Eye. She returned to the Omaha area in 1999, to be near her family.
Martha is survived by her children, Robert and wife Kitz Cleary of Menomonie, Wisc., Michael and wife Bev Cleary of Boise, Idaho, James and wife Trish Cleary of Brooklyn Park, Timothy and wife Carrie Cleary of Plymouth, Donna and husband Vern Krysl of Bellevue, Nebr., and Jeanne and husband John Zupfer of Round Rock, Tex.; brothers, Vic Kaup, Tom Kaup and Fred Kaup, all of Stuart, Nebr., Dennis Kaup of Atkinson, Nebr., and Gene Kaup of Paramount, Calif.; sister, Beata Krueger of Atkinson, Nebr.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clement; parents; five sisters and two brothers.

Catherine (Mrs. Harold) Johnson
Catherine (Mrs. Harold) Johnson, 93, Mankato, formerly of New Ulm, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato. Funeral services are Thursday, July 17, 10 a.m., at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Catherine was born Jan. 27, 1910, in Albin Township, Brown County, to Christopher and Marianna (Schloegel) Sellner. She married Harold J. Johnson on Oct. 21, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage they lived in Sleepy Eye for 27 years and then moved to New Ulm. Catherine had worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye and was also employed in housekeeping for people and businesses. Catherine enjoyed crocheting, quilting and gardening and was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm and was a member of the Christian Mother's Society.
Catherine is survived by her husband, Harold Johnson of Madelia; daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Jerome Schmidt of Madelia, Marian and Darrel Roybal of Grand Junction, Colo.; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Rose Johnson of Baxter; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Clara Schroepfer of Sleepy Eye; Angie Weber of Gibbon, Anna Hacker of Lafayette; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard Sellner, and Clement and Dorothy Sellner, all of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; five brothers; and a son-in-law, Daniel Schmidt.

Mary P. Pyfferoen
Mary P. Pyfferoen, 86, Sleepy Eye, formerly of Franklin, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services were Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Franklin, with interment in St. Patrick's Birch Coulee Cemetery, Franklin. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Mary was born March 1, 1917, in Birch Coulee Township, the daughter of John and Nellie (Lorden) Ruff. She grew up in Franklin and graduated from high school in 1934. Mary attended the Minneapolis Business College and moved to Nebraska where she worked for Commodity Credit. She married Edward Schroeder on Oct. 23, 1945, in Nebraska. The couple moved to St. Paul where Mary worked for the IRS for many years. Edward died in 1974, and Mary returned to the Franklin area in 1975, spending her winters in Arizona. Mary married Joseph Pyfferoen on April 21, 1981, and the couple made their home in Apache Junction, Ariz. Joseph died in 1988, and Mary later moved to Sleepy Eye and made her home at the Lake Villa Maria Apartments for many years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Catholic Aid, C.O.F., and the National Association for Retired Federal Workers. She was loyal to the Democratic Party and was an active member of churches she belonged to. Mary enjoyed traveling and square dancing.
Mary is survived by her sisters, Loretta Ryan of Springfield and Agnes Jean Kickul of Mankato; and brother, John "Jack" and wife Eunice Ruff of Franklin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ed and Joe; and sister, Eileen Anderson.

Frieda C. Hoffmann
Frieda C. Hoffmann, 89, formerly of New Ulm, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Frieda Caroline Hoffmann, was born Dec. 15, 1913, in Moltke Township, Sibley County, the daughter of Edward and Marie (Buchl) Klement. She attended District 24 Country School in rural Gibbon. On Sept. 3, 1940, Frieda was united in marriage to John Conrad Hoffmann at the St. Willibrords Catholic Church in Gibbon. After marriage, they farmed in Cottonwood Township, Brown County. In 1971, Frieda and John moved to New Ulm, but continued farming. On Aug. 25, 2000, Frieda moved to the Oak Terrace Assisted Living in Mankato and since April 29, 2003, she has been a resident of Divine Providence Community Home. Frieda was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm for 63 years, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Aid Society, the St. Monica's Society and the St. Jude Guild.
Frieda is survived by her daughters, Rosemary Stadick of New Ulm and Joyce and husband Anthony Hoffmann of rural Sleepy Eye; sons, John R. Hoffmann, Kenneth and wife Linda Hoffmann and Gary and wife Darlene Hoffmann, all of rural New Ulm; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Arthur and wife Dorothy Klement of New Ulm; sister-in-law, Delores Klement of Gibbon; brothers-in-law, Alois Schneider and Arnold Schweiss, both of New Ulm; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Hoffmann on May 20, 1990; daughter-in-law, Kathy Hoffmann in 1992; son-in-law, Leander Stadick in 1998; parents, Edward and Marie Klement; sister, Anna Fahrenkamp, Sister M. Arilda O.S.B., Hilda Schweiss, Marie Mohr, Cecelia Schneider; and brothers, Robert Klement and Frank Klement.
Casket bearers were Steven Hoffmann, Daniel Hoffmann, Peter Hoffmann, George Hoffmann, Mark Hoffmann and Patrick Stadick.

Paul V. Mathiowetz
Paul V. Mathiowetz, Milwaukee, Wisc., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, July 13, 2003. Funeral services were July 16 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Milwaukee, with interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Paul was born July 19, 1921, at home in Eden Township, Brown County, the son of Frank and Margaretha (Rauch) Mathiowetz. He grew up on the farm, and attended school in District 35, Eden Township. Paul helped on the farm until he was drafted to serve in WWII at the age of 21 years. From Sept. 8, 1942, until Oct. 25, 1945, Paul served in northern Africa and Italy. Paul married Barbara Schmitz of Milwaukee on Aug. 20, 1949. He worked as a tool and die maker in Milwaukee. Paul and Barbara were blessed with three children, Michael, Judith and Denis.
Paul is survived by his sister, Anna Zinniel, Winnebago; brothers, Martin Mathiowetz, Redwood Falls; Lawrence Mathiowetz, Richland, Wash.; and Andrew Mathiowetz of Morgan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; parents; sister, Estelle Mathiowetz; brothers, Francis Mathiowetz and George Mathiowetz.

George James McCutcheon
George James McCutcheon, 91, died Dec. 24, 2002. He was born Aug. 6, 1911, in Zumbrota, the son of William and Iva Mae (Rueber) McCutcheon. When he was in the fifth grade, his family moved to the Pine Island area. George graduated as Valedictorian of the Pine Island High School class of 1929. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota and graduated with honors in 1933, with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. On Jan. 1, 1934, George married Gertrude E. Stucky in Zumbrota. He started teaching at Sleepy Eye High School and later at Hanska High School, New Ulm High School and University High School. In 1945, he earned his Masters Degree at the University of Minnesota. In 1950, George started teaching at the University of Minnesota in the General College Math Department. He earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology in 1958, from the University of Minnesota. George retired from teaching at the University in 1980. He continued to be a volunteer teacher for the University Extension evening classes. George was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, MEA and he enjoyed playing the drums. For over 20 years, he played the snare drum with the Sleepy Eye Drum and Bugle Corp., which was the state champion for many years.
George is survived by his wife, Gertrude; daughter, Arlene Nellis of Minneapolis; and grandson, Tim Nellis of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William McCutcheon; and an infant sister.
A memorial celebration to commemorate the life of Professor McCutcheon will take place Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 176 North Mississippi River Boulevard, St. Paul, MN 55104. Memorials are preferred to the McCutcheon Family Scholarship Fund, in care of the University of Minnesota General College, 128 Pleasant St. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455. The scholarship fund supports first generation, low-income General College students.

Lyle Herbert Nelson
Lyle Nelson, 74, New Ulm, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at his home. Funeral service were Saturday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Donald Sutton officiating. Burial with full military honors was conducted by the New Ulm Veteran's Organizations at the Morgan City Cemetery.
Lyle Herbert Nelson, the son of Nels and Mary (Discher) Nelson, was born Oct. 27, 1928, in Morgan. He grew up on the family farm and attended District 19 School in Brown County and parochial school in Fairfax. Lyle entered the United States Army Nov. 9, 1951, proudly serving in the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge on July 24, 1953, he settled in New Ulm where he owned and operated the Coffee Cup Caf/ with his mother. He also worked for Pamida in New Ulm for twenty years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
Survivors include his sister, Phyllis and husband Clarence Buboltz of Fairfax; brother-in-law, Ervin Hinderman of Sleepy Eye; sister-in-law, Christine Nelson of Sleepy Eye; 10 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by his sisters, Mabel Hinderman and Lucille Buboltz; brother, Earl Nelson; and a brother in infancy.

Clarence "Click" J. Paulson
Clarence "Click" J. Paulson, 92, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Prairieville Cemetery, rural Evan. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Clarence was born Feb. 19, 1911, in Prairieville Township, the son of Nels and Carrie (Knudsen) Paulson. He grew up and attended country school in Prairieville Township and in 1929, graduated from Sleepy Eye High School. Clarence worked for Snow Hatchery for a short time and then began farming with his father in Prairieville Township. Clarence married Frances Rice on April 3, 1935, in Hanska. The couple made their home in Prairieville Township where they farmed until retiring. They remained on the family farm until moving to Sleepy Eye Care Center in October of 2001. Frances preceded Clarence in death on April 2, 2003. Clarence was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye, the Minnesota Farmers Union and the DFL Party. He was on the Prairieville Township District #29 School Board for many years and also served on the Brown County ASCS Committee for many years.
Clarence is survived by his children, Kay and husband Dennis Jensen of Eagle, Idaho, Dean and wife Shirley Paulson of Glenwood, and Jim and wife Louise Paulson of St. James; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and brother, Don and wife Elinor Paulson of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances; sister, Mary Kunze; and brothers, Harvey Paulson and Arnold Paulson.

Walter "Wally" Ambrose Forster
Walter Ambrose Forster, 95, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, or St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Wally was born Dec. 6, 1907, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Martin and Margaret Forster. He attended and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church his entire life. As a young adult, Wally helped his father, Martin, in the Forster Bar in Sleepy Eye. Wally married Helen Mo in 1933, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, and they lived in Sleepy Eye until Wally became a resident at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Sleepy Eye Chamber of Commerce. Wally was instrumental in starting and managing the Sleepy Eye Golf Club. He enjoyed coaching basketball and football for St. Mary's High School, running the projections at Pix Theatre and owning and operating Forster Signs. Wally loved playing golf, badminton, ice sailing, card games, archery and fishing.
Wally is survived by his wife, Helen of Sleepy Eye; sons, John Forster of Crowfordsville, Ind., and Bob and wife Barb Forster of Park Rapids; daughters, Beverly and husband Mike Cleary of Plymouth and Marian and husband Tom Belle of Minneapolis; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Margaret Forster; and brothers, Raymond Forster and Sylvester Forster.
Casket bearers were Todd Forster, Jerry Forster, Colin Cleary, Aaron Bloom, Jeremiah Forster, Lisa Hoffmann, Kristy Forster, Sandi Sportelli and Vickie Neid. Honorary casket bearers were Rick Hoffmann, Brian Sportelli, ShyAnn Hoffmann, Megan Forster, Alyassa Neid, Gary Neid, Jesse Hoffmann, Kallie Forster, Vanessa Neid and Sue Forster.

Hazel A. Moll
Hazel A. Moll, 81, Longville, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. Funeral services were Friday at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Hazel was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Kenyon, the daughter of Elsie (Tews) and William Koberstein. She grew up in Sleepy Eye, where she attended District 36 Country School, the same school all of her children attended. On Aug. 26, 1939, Hazel was united in marriage to Harold Moll at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sleepy Eye. This union was blessed with eight children. Hazel and Harold farmed in the Sleepy Eye area until 1978, when they retired and moved to Longville. Hazel also worked at the Del Monte Corporation and in area residential homes as a nurses' aid. She was active in her ladies group at church, bible study and served many years as a Sunday School teacher. Hazel's happiest times were when she was surrounded by her family.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Harold Moll of Brainerd; children, Duane and wife Bonnie Moll of Plymouth, Kenneth and wife Evonne Moll of St. James, Dale Moll of Holdingford, Leon Moll of Lino Lakes, Norma Hudson of Little Falls, Ronda and husband Brian Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren; She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Janet; and daughter, Lila.
Casket bearers were Ralph Morehouse, William Moll, Donald Moll, Richard Moll, Mark Moll and Gary Moll.
