Ida Martha Schwartz
Ida Martha Schwartz, 88, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, March 23, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services are Thursday, March 27, 11 a.m., at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home is handled the arrangements.
Ida was born Nov. 22, 1914, in Willow Township, Redwood County, to August and Anna (Lapschis) Krueger. She attended country school in Willow Township. On Sept. 6, 1937, she married Franklin Schwartz at Trinity Lutheran Church in Willow Lake Township. After marriage they farmed in Leavenworth Township for many years. Ida was a charter member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Her faith was the most important aspect of her life. She enjoyed her family, cooking, gardening and observing the planting and harvesting of crops each year.
She is survived by sons, David Schwartz of Sleepy Eye, Tom and wife Sue Schwartz of Apple Valley, Douglas Schwartz of Sleepy Eye and Darryl and wife Nanette Schwartz of Sleepy Eye; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, son-in-law, Chuck Schewe of Sleepy Eye; sister, Elsie Werner of Wabasso and numerous sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Franklin; daughters, Elaine, Shirley and Clarice; brothers, Walter, August, Helmuth, Paul, Louis, William and Edwin; sisters, Ella, Esther, Leona and a brother and sister in infancy.

Hedvig "Margaret" Klotz
Hedvig "Margaret" Klotz, 85, of Sleepy Eye died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services are Thursday, Aug. 7, 10:30 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Hedvig was born June 23, 1918, in St. James, to Carl and Anna (Hagstelle) Palmquist. She married Arthur E. Klotz on Feb. 14, 1941 at her parents farm in rural St. James. After marriage they lived in Sleepy Eye, where Hedvig was employed as a cook at various restaurants in the area and also as a cook at the Sleepy Eye Public Elementary School. She also worked as a seasonal employee at Del Monte and AUI, Sleepy Eye. After Hedvig and her husband retired, they became caretakers of the Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. They thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor work at the cemetery. She also enjoyed crocheting and embroidery. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye and was also active in the Ladies Aid at church.
Hedvig is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Roger Hull of New Ulm; Carol and Milan Jordan of Grand Rapids; a son and daughter-in-law; Leo and Dawn Klotz of Sleepy Eye; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur E. Klotz on March 23, 1998; two sisters; and two brothers.

Donald William Rausch
Donald William Rausch, 75, Crosslake, formerly of Sleepy Eye, and wintering in Arkansas, died July 30, 2003, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. A memorial Mass was held on Saturday at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake, with Father Dennis Hoffman officiating. Memorials are preferred to the Donald W. Rausch Memorial Fund to be designated later by the family. Arrangements were handled by Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake.
Donald was born May 23, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Matthew A. and Edna (Eahler) Rausch. He was united in marriage with Elizabeth "Betty" Lenertz on Feb. 9, 1950 in St. Peter. They made their home in Mankato for five years and then in Sleepy Eye for 30 years. Donald worked in agri-business all his working life and retired from Harvestland Coop Elevator in Morgan. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and active at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
Donald is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty; daughters, Carolyn and husband Michael Ress of New Ulm, Amy Rausch of Kansas City, Mo., Claire Rausch of Honolulu, Hawaii, Diane Rausch and husband David Windschitl of Leander, Tex., Mary Ann and husband David Mendoza of The Woodlands, Tex., and Lynn and husband James Jorud of Sartel; sons, Wayne A. Rausch of Malibu, Calif., Matthew G. and wife Sheila Rausch of California City, Md.; Alan L. and wife Ilene Rausch of Brooklyn Park, Christopher J. Rausch of Denver, Colo., and Mark E. Rausch and fiancee' Libby Fulk of Patterson, N.Y.; sister, Audrey and husband George Frederick of Madison Lake; brother, Theodore and wife Vonnie Rausch of Brooklyn Park; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Carol.

Bertha L. Hanson
Bertha Leona Hanson, 92, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Care Center. Funeral services were held Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Bertha was born July 15, 1922 in Bismark, N.D., the daughter of Archie and Eva (Wallace) Swartz. She grew up and attended rural school near Bismark. She worked and helped other families in the Bismark area before marriage. Bertha married Kenneth Hanson at the Congregational Church in Sleepy Eye and moved to Duluth. They returned to Sleepy Eye in the 1950s and Bertha worked for Del Monte and Pietrus Processing. She was a former member of the Orpha Chapter of the Eastern Star and a current member of Faith United Methodist Church. Bertha enjoyed cooking, baking, making cards and playing bingo. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bertha is survived by her sons, Bill and wife LaNette Hanson and Chris Hanson, all of Sleepy Eye; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Elmer Swartz of Portland, Ore.; and sister, Bernadette Kuchta of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Max Swartz, Earl Swartz and James Swartz, Mary Swartz, Verna King, Ruth Swartz, Pearl Kelso, Jeanette Wallauer and Jackie Simola; and an infant daughter, Patricia.

Cyril M. "Cy" Ludewig
Cyril M. "Cy" Ludewig, 69, Sartell, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell, with interment in the church cemetery. Daniel Funeral Home of Sartell handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
Cy was born April 28, 1934 in Sleepy Eye, to Raymond and Gertrude (Schumacher) Ludewig. He served in the United States Army Signal Corps from 1956, until his honorable discharge in 1958. Cy married Judith M. McDonald on June 4, 1960, at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Lake Lillian. He worked in television repair and two-way radio communications sales and service. Cy owned and operated Air Comm of St. Cloud for over 20 years, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed playing steel guitar and concertina and was a member of several bands. Cy was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Befrienders, Men's Prayer Group and the Knights of Columbus Council #5276.
Cy is survived by his wife, Judy of Sartell; children, Chris and wife Tammy McDonough of Northfield, Greg and wife Jan of Andover, Paula of Falcon Heights, Bruce of Oakdale and Becky and husband Paul Lulai of St. Louis Park; grandchildren, Sara, Karyn, Carl, Andy, Mike and Emily Ludewig and Grace Lulai; brothers, Ben Ludewig of Comfrey, Felix Ludewig of Springfield, Matt Ludewig of Fairfax, Charlie Ludewig of Morgan, Fred Ludewig of Springfield and Dave Ludewig of Sleepy Eye; and sister, Adeline Braulick of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Leonard.

Aaron Jae Mangen
Aaron Jae Mangen, 5 1/2 months, New Ulm, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis. Funeral services are Thursday, Aug. 28, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Aaron is survived by his parents, Jason and Heather (Carlson) Mangen of New Ulm; grandparents, Harold and Beverly Grabowski of Winnebago and Joseph and Mary Mangen of Sleepy Eye; great-grandmothers, Sylvia Mangen of Sleepy Eye, Ethel Hettwer of East Grand Forks and Irena Carlson of Eau Claire, formerly of Truman; aunts and uncles, Sarah and Matt Mages of New Ulm, James Mangen of Sleepy Eye and Garth Carlson of Winnebago.

Cleo K. (Wallin) Olsen
Cleo K. (Wallin) Olsen, 91, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at her home. Funeral services were Saturday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Evan, with interment in Prairieville Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye.
Cleo was born Sept. 21, 1911, in Comfrey, the daughter of Ivar and Margaret (Baier) Wallin. She grew up and attended school in Comfrey. Cleo graduated from Normal School in New Ulm and taught country school until she married. Cleo married Ralph Olsen on Sept. 26, 1936, in Comfrey. The couple lived and farmed on the Olsen Homestead Farm their entire life. Cleo was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She played whist with a group of ladies in Evan and was their "dessert lady." Cleo loved her family, cooking, baking and crossword puzzles.
Cleo is survived by her daughter, Nancy and husband Don Jacob of Cincinnati, Ohio; granddaughter, Lynne and husband Bill Boulger of Cincinnati; great-grandchildren, Matt Boulger and Sara Boulger; sister, Mercedes Borseth of Windom; brothers, Dick Robinsonof of Windom and Marion Nikoley of Owatonna; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph in 1986; son, Joel in 1992; three brothers and four sisters.

Roderick L. Thordson
Roderick L. Thordson, 60, Minneapolis, formerly of Springfield, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at his home. Funeral services were Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, Springfield, with interment in Springfield City Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Roderick, the son of Raymond and Alpha (Ahlness) Thordson, was born Jan. 22, 1943, in Madelia. At a young age, he moved with his parents to a farm near Comfrey and attended Comfrey school. The family moved to Brookville Township, Redwood County, where Roderick attended country school until the 7th grade, when he transferred to Springfield Public School. Following school, he farmed with his parents. On Oct. 31, 1964, Roderick married Janice Swoboda at St. John Lutheran Church in Springfield. They continued to farm on the family farm until 1994, moving briefly to Marshall and returning to Springfield in 1995. Roderick worked at Jackpot Junction Casino in Morton until moving to Minneapolis in June of 2000, where he worked as a maintenance man at the apartment complex where they lived. Roderick was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Springfield and enjoyed repairing cars, fishing, time with family and friends and being with his grandchildren.
Roderick is survived by his wife, Janice Thordson of Minneapolis; sons, Steven and wife Karla Thordson of Sleepy Eye, David Thordson of Lamberton and Michael Thordson of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters, Rachel and husband Scott Grewe of Raymond and Danielle and husband Jacob Norrid of Crystal; six grandchildren; mother, Alpha Thordson of Springfield; and brother, Randal and wife Wanda Thordson of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond in 1996, and son, Daniel in 1974.
