Angeline V. (Schultz) Toomey
Angeline V. (Schultz) Toomey, 80, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at her home. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Angeline Virginia Schultz was born July 23, 1923, in Sherman Township, Redwood County, the daughter of Alfred T. and Emma (Kropp) Schultz. Angeline grew up and attended school in the Morton area. She worked as a beauty operator in Minneapolis for a short time until she married John Toomey on Jan. 14, 1950, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye for two years, Truman for eight years, Fairmont for a few years and then returned to Sleepy Eye where they lived until retirement in 1990. After retiring, Angeline and John moved to Arizona. Angeline was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Mesa and a past member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Angeline enjoyed walking, bowling and playing bingo.
Angeline is survived by her husband, John Toomey of Mesa; children, Roger and wife Debra Toomey of Atlanta, Ga., John Jr. and wife Anne Toomey of Inver Grove Heights, Jeffrey Toomey of Apple Valley, and Jennifer Sellner of Farmington; foster daughters, Julie Chute and Brenda Schultz, both of New Ulm; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Wilhelmi of Sleepy Eye and Elsie Thiel of St. James; brothers, Ray Schultz of Belview, Leon "Blackie" Schultz of New Ulm and Alfred Schultz, Jr. of Elmwood, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Lawrence Schultz and Melvin Schultz.

Victor H. Marti
Victor H. Marti, 88, Springfield, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Visitation is at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, Nov. 6, 4:30 to 8 p.m. and also Friday, Nov. 7, 7:30 to 10 a.m. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Friday at 11 a.m., with interment in the Marti Family Cemetery in rural Sleepy Eye.
Victor was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Milford Township, Brown County, the son of Frank and Minnie (Hager) Marti. He grew up and attended country school in Milford Township. Victor married Gertrude Hauser on Oct. 30, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, the couple moved to Belgrade, where Victor farmed and drove truck for a year. Victor and Gertrude returned to the family farm where Victor farmed and worked as a diesel mechanic until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Victor enjoyed deer hunting, fishing in Canada, snowmobiling, coffee in Essig, tractor pulls, spending time with family and walks in the woods.
Victor is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Sleepy Eye; children and their spouses, Monica and Norm Warwick of Sleepy Eye, Janet Jenniges of Finlayson, Frank Marti of New Ulm, Karen and Dennis Deopere of Cambria, Diane and George Hemmeter of East Bethel, Ron and Marlene Marti of New Ulm, Anita and John Hemmeter of Finlayson, Steve Marti of Sleepy Eye, Paul and LuAnn Marti of New Ulm, Mary and Mark Haller of River Falls, Wisc., Bob and Kathy Marti of Sleepy Eye, Julie and Dick Sindelir of Morton and Beverly and DanKadlec of Lafayette; sister, Helen and husband George Lendt of New Ulm; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Marti of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edwin Marti; sister, Elinor Hauert; son-in-law, Mathias Jenniges and daughter-in-law, Karen Marti.

James S. Rich
James S. Rich, 88, New Ulm, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Services were Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home chapel in New Ulm, with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Jamestown, N.D. The family requests memorials go to either St. John's Lutheran Church building fund or to the Oak Hills Living Center Auxiliary.
James was born March 15, 1915, in New Rockford N.D., the son of Daniel and Clara Rich. He graduated from Hope High School in Hope, N.D. in 1934. James married Edith Nygaard on Aug. 17, 1936, in Hope. After marriage, the couple moved to Jamestown in 1937. In 1946, they moved to Cooperstown, N.D. and then to Sleepy Eye in 1957. They have lived in New Ulm since 1962. James worked for Current's Meat Market and Berens Rodenberg and O'Connor Law Office. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. James enjoyed flying, archery and woodworking.
James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith; sister, Arlene Mary Knian; son, Ronald Rich; daughter-in-law, Donna Rich; grandchild, Andrew Rich; and sister-in-law, Joann Rich.

Richard F. Berdan
Richard F. Berdan, 88, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery. Sleepy Eye Honor Guard performed military rites. Richard was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Morgan, the son of Fred and Sophie (Reinhart) Berdan. He grew up in Morgan and Sleepy Eye and graduated from St. Mary's High School. Rich served in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theatre, with the Water Purification Unit attached to the 31st Engineers Division. He moved to Sleepy Eye, where he owned and operated a well-drilling and plumbing business. Rich married Lucille Moelter on Sept. 18, 1951, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso. He served as director of St. Mary's Girl's Drum Corp and was a drummer for 15 years in the Sleepy Eye Drum and Bugle Corps. Rich served on St. Mary's Parish Board of Education and Parish Council. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Aid and Catholic Order of Foresters. He was an avid football fan, particularly of St. Mary's, St. John's and Notre Dame.
Rich is survived by his wife, Lucille of Sleepy Eye; children and their spouses, Ron and Mary Berdan of Sleepy Eye, Carol and Jim Prokosch of New Ulm, Jerr and Jayna Berdan of Lorretto, David and Penny Berdan of St. Cloud, Joyce and Lynn Krenz of Sleepy Eye, Diane and Wes Dodson of Dallas, Tex., Brian and Lisa Berdan of Montgomery and Denis and Lisa Berdan of New Ulm; 20 grandchildren; sister, Marcella "Buddy" McReady of Berwyn, Ill.; brother, Roland Berdan of Fairfax; and sister-in-law, Charlotte Berdan of Fairfax. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Agnes, Elsie, Stella, and Rose in infancy; and brothers, Hubert Berdan, Ted Berdan, Al Berdan and Hank Berdan.

Elvis Schindele
Elvis Schindele, 74, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 8, at First Baptist Church in New Ulm, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Elvis was born July 4, 1929, in Aitkin, the son of William and Hattie Schindele. He grew up and attended grade school in Swatara and attended high school in Aitkin. Elvis married Corice Walsh on Oct. 24, 1953, in Hill City. He worked for the Erie Mining Company and Osmoses Wood Preserving, before moving to Sleepy Eye. Elvis owned and operated the Phillip 66 Service Station from 1962, until 1984. He then developed his hobby of owning and managing apartments. Elvis enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and traveling. He was a past member of the Lions. Elvis loved the Lord and had a personal relationship with Him. He shared this love by being a Sunday School teacher and serving as Deacon at First Baptist Church in New Ulm.
Elvis is survived by his wife, Corice of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Donna and husband Tom Miller of Litchfield; son, James and wife Beverly Schindele of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Andy, Erik, Chris and Megan Miller of Litchfield, Melissa Miller of Jupiter, Fla., and Mary and Kristin Schindele of Sleepy Eye; great-grandchild, Alexis of Litchfield; sisters, Virginia Edwards of Mountain View, Calif., Edith Smith of Ozark, Mich., Ruth Wynkoup of Kaselof, Alaska and Mary and husband Ray DeFelici of Lander, Wyo. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mable Beebe and Erma Butterfield; two nieces and three nephews.

Niels Christian (Chris) Johnson
Niels Christian (Chris) Johnson, 88, Buffalo Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center in Buffalo Lake. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 17, at Zion United Methodist Church in Buffalo Lake, with interment in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Hughes Funeral Home of Hector handled the arrangements.
Chris was born June 22, 1915, the son of Rudolph and Sarah (Hansen) Johnson. He was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in June of 1934. Chris grew up in the Sleepy Eye area where he attended rural school. On April 16, 1942, Chris was united in marriage to Violet Stage at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. The couple lived in Sleepy Eye for five years before moving to a farm near Morgan. In December of 1956, they moved to Hector where they lived for three years. Chris and Violet then lived and farmed on a farm to the north between Buffalo Lake and Hector. Chris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake. He loved farming and enjoyed going fishing. He and Violet made many trips to California to visit Violet's family.
Chris is survived by his wife, Violet of Glencoe; children and their spouses, Edna and Quentin Lundberg of North Mankato, Alfred Johnson of Pemberton, Willard "Willie" and Carla Johnson of Sleepy Eye, Donna and John Cross of Plymouth and Dennis and Darlene Johnson of Hector; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Lester and wife Marian Johnson of Sleepy Eye; sister, Eleanor Buche of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ervin Johnson; sisters, Verna Groff, Mary Johnson, Verdina Johnson, Mathilda Johnson and Hazel Johnson; brother, Wilbert Johnson and three brothers in infancy.
Honorary casket bearers were granddaughters, Kari Lundberg, Yvonne Johnson, Tracy Kaske, Lori Anderson, Tonia Radloff and Paula Cross. Casket bearers were grandsons, Kenneth Lundberg, Lonnie Johnson, Trent Johnson, Stacy Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Scott Johnson and Troy Johnson.

Edwin E. Streich
Edwin Emil Streich, 94, Comfrey, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 14, at St. John Lutheran Home Chapel, Springfield, with interment in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Comfrey. Sturm Funeral Home of Comfrey handled the arrangements.
Edwin was born Sept. 1, 1909, in Brown County, the son of Herman and Ida Marie (Engel) Streich. He attended country school and helped on the farm. On Nov. 16, 1939, Edwin married Amelia Prokosch in Comfrey. They farmed in Selma Township, Cottonwood County near Darfur, from 1943, until retirement in 1999, after which they moved into Comfrey. Ed was a lifetime baptized and confirmed member of New Hope Lutheran Church (formerly Salem Lutheran Church) in Comfrey. He enjoyed old time music, playing concertina and the button accordion, restoring gas engines and was one of the founding original members of the Butterfield Threshing Bee.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Amelia (Millie) of Comfrey; daughter, Joyce Schubert of El Segundo, Calif.; brother, Donald Streich of Tennessee; and sisters, Elsie Schiller and Eleanor Graff, both of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lester Streich, Ray Streich and Melvin (Bud) Streich; and sisters, Alice Maha and Ardel Graff.

Charles "Chuck" Doeltz
Charles "Chuck" Doeltz, 64, Edina, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at his home. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 24, at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel in Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home. E-mail condolences may be sent to www.sturmfh.com.
Chuck was born July 29, 1939, the son of Karl and Eileen Doeltz. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and the Minneapolis School of Art. Chuck served in the United States Navy on the USS Enterprise. As all of Chuck's friends knew, he would rather golf than do anything else. He was a member of the New Ulm Golf Club and held a 4 handicap. He won the Sleepy Eye Golf Club Championship and had two hole-in-ones on the same numbered hole, with the same foursome at the Hastings Country Club. Chuck was an accomplished pianist and freelance artist. He retired from Honeywell and was currently working at 2nd Swing in Minneapolis.
Chuck is survived by his sister, Betsy and husband James Kozial of Bloomingdale, Ill.; nieces, Heather Beam and Elizabeth Voegele of South Bend, Ind. and Kimberly Cotter of Phoenix, Ariz., great-nephews, Alex Beam and Ethan Cotter; and great-niece, Autum Cotter. Chuck will be missed by many.
