Evelyn M. Zenk
Evelyn M. Zenk, 86, Bird Island, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at the Olivia Healthcare Center. Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 26 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island, with interment in the church cemetery. Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Bird Island handled the arrangements.
Evelyn was born Nov. 26, 1916, on the family farm in Home Township, rural Sleepy Eye, to Michael and Bertha (Kachelmeier) Soukup. She attended country school in Home Township. Evelyn married Sylvester Zenk on Oct. 12, 1937, at Sleepy Eye. They made their home north of Sleepy Eye in 1942, at which time they moved to a farm at Olivia. In 1950, they moved to their farm south of Bird Island. Sylvester preceded Evelyn in death in 1978, and she resided on the farm until two months ago, when she became a resident of the Olivia Healthcare Center. Evelyn enjoyed taking pictures and making albums, raising chickens and selling eggs and had raised geese for a few years. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, crafts and attending dances with her husband.
Evelyn is survived by her children and their spouses, Catherine and Ronald Seitz of Sleepy Eye, Stanley and Sharon Zenk of Foley and Janet and Norman Howell of Olivia; grandchildren, Mike Seitz, Elaine Fischer, Annette Olson, Sam Zenk, Sarah Bartels and Susan Zenk; great-grandchildren, Keith Fischer, Craig Fischer, Stephanie Bartels, Sandra Bartels, Daniel Bartels, Stanton Zenk and Dalton Davis; brother, Clarence Soukup of Sleepy Eye; sister, Verna Scharfencamp of Franklin; and sister-in-law, Delores Soukup of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sylvester; son, Leo in 1981; brothers, Wendelin Soukup and Francis Soukup; and sister, Irene Schilling.
Norman John Braun
Norman John Braun, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 29 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Norman was born June 21, 1918, in New Ulm, the son of George G. and Wilhelminia (Manderfeld) Braun. He served in the United States Army for three years during WWII. Norman married Lucille Baechler on May 30, 1945, in Fairfax. The couple lived in Fairfax for awhile until moving to Stewart and then to Sleepy Eye. In Sleepy Eye, Norman operated a sawmill for a number of years and later was co-owner of Braun Sanitation and also did saw sharpening for many years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a life member of the VFW. Norman enjoyed camping, fishing and going out West hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Braun of Sleepy Eye; sons, Steve and wife Nancy Braun of Tempe Ariz. and Mike and wife Betty Braun of Sleepy Eye; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel and husband Elmer Haala of Sleepy Eye, Delores Kortz of Fairfax and Florence Helget of Sleepy Eye, Kathy Olson of Fairfax; and sister-in-law, Elma Braun of Slayton. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard and brothers-in-law, Emmet Olson, Hubert Kortz and Linus Helget.
Karen Marti
Karen Kay (Schugel) Marti, 53, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at her home. Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 29, at The Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Leavenworth, with interment in the Marti Family Cemetery.
Karen was born Sept. 9, 1950, in New Ulm, the daughter of Eugene and Delores (Seifert) Schugel. She grew up and attended school in New Ulm, graduating from New Ulm Public High School. Karen married Steve Marti on Nov. 15, 1969, at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye. Karen worked in the housekeeping department at the New Ulm Medical Center and later did day care for four years so she could be home with her children. She then worked retail for 10 years before returning to the New Ulm Medical Center. Karen was a member of The Church of the Japanese Martyrs and taught CCD in Leavenworth and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye for 12 years. She enjoyed anything to do with sports from watching the "Twinkies" and Vikings, to high school volleyball and football. You could usually find Karen gardening, reading and spending many hours with her daughters and husband and of course, Mikey, the Cocker Spaniel and Oreo the purring cat.
Karen is survived by her husband, Steve Marti of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Angela Marti and Stacy Jo Marti and fiance Joe Kotten, all of Sleepy Eye; granddaughter, Emma Kotten; mother, Delores Schugel of New Ulm; brothers, Tom and wife Renee Schugel of Maple Grove, Randy and wife Penny Schugel of Fairfax and Jeff and wife Tammy Schugel of Highland Ranch, Colo; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene in 1984, and infant daughter, Brenda Jean in 1969.
Bonnie Sue Anderson
Bonnie Sue Anderson, 53, Springfield, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Springfield Medical Center Hospital, after a four-year battle with cancer. Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 8, at St. John Lutheran Church with interment in Springfield City Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Bonnie was born April 17, 1950, in Minneapolis, the daughter of William and Alda (Doering) Meyer. She attended and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1968. She graduated from Mankato State University in 1972, with a degree in elementary education and early childhood development and taught school in LeRoy-Ostrander and Redwood Falls. Bonnie married Tom Anderson on March 22, 1975, in Springfield. The couple made their home in rural Springfield where Bonnie did substitute teaching in Springfield and Sleepy Eye and was also an office manager and co-owner of Bois Lake Farms. Bonnie was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she was the Sunday School superintendent and taught Sunday School. She was also a Deacon and president of the Church Council and a member of the Deborah Circle. Bonnie was a leader of the Leavenworth Achievers 4-H group and a Reach for Recovery volunteer. She was also a member of the Springfield American Legion Auxiliary, North Star Home Extension Club and the Minnesota State Cattlewomen's Association.
Bonnie is survived by her loving husband, Tom Anderson of Springfield; children, Carl Anderson of Springfield, Nick and wife Brenda Anderson of Springfield and Megan Anderson of LaCrosse, Wis.; brother, Bill and wife Marilyn Meyer of Mound; parents, Bill and Alda Meyer of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.
DeVelda Catherine (Freeman) Burdick
DeVelda Catherine Burdick, 86, Sleepy Eye, formerly of Maddock, N.D., died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Funeral services are planned for Friday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m., at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Maddock. Visitation is Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6-8 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, and Friday, Oct. 10, 9-10 a.m. at the church with interment in Hesper Cemetery.
DeVelda C. (Ryden) Burdick was born July 4, 1917, near Esmond, N.D., the daughter of Guy William and Mary Jane (McMillen) Freeman. She grew up and attended country school in Rich Valley. She graduated from B.C.A.T.S. in Maddock, N.D. and also did a year of postgraduate work there. During her high school years, she played trumpet in band and violin in the orchestra. DeVelda took care of the family farm after her father's death. She also taught country school and worked at the Minnewauken Courthouse. DeVelda married Russel Ryden on Aug. 3, 1944, in Esmond, N.D. and the couple farmed in the Hesper-Esmond areas. After Russel's death in 1957, DeVelda moved to Pacoima, Calif. and worked for Pacific Electronics. DeVelda married Richard Burdick on June 17, 1961, in Las Vegas, Nev. and the couple farmed near Hesper, N.D. Richard died in 1997, and DeVelda moved to Minnesota to live with her daughters. DeVelda loved gardening, nature, crocheting, farming and helping her family. She faithfully attended church all of her life.
DeVelda is survived by her daughters, Wanda and husband Pastor Donn Rakow of Sleepy Eye and Belinda Poppenhagen of New Ulm; grandchildren, Marc and wife Monica Rakow, Marcy and husband Jody Tuma, Derek Poppenhagen and Trina Fluegge; great-grandchildren, Lydia Rakow, Casey Fluegge, Cody Fluegge and Celia Fluegge; sister-in-law, Catherine Miles of Puyallup, Wash.; several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Merl, Leslie and McMillen; sister, Lola; husband, Russel on Jan. 19, 1957; and husband Richard on May 2, 1997.
Clarence Francis Goblirsch
Clarence Francis Goblirsch, 73, Comfrey, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at Nancy's Comfort Care in Kasota, the result of a farm accident earlier this year. Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 6, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Clarence was born April 30, 1930, in Albin Township, Brown County, the son of Albert J. and Elizabeth (Soukup) Goblirsch. He grew up and attended St. Mary's School. Clarence married Verna Schull on Dec. 2, 1951, at the St. Peter and Paul's Rectory in Mankato. The couple made their home in Mulligan Township where they lived and farmed for many years. Verna preceded Clarence in death on Feb. 4, 2000. Clarence was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. He enjoyed farming, especially the planting and harvesting. Clarence also enjoyed going to dances and spending time with his family.
Clarence is survived by his daughters, Vivian and husband Jerome Kostelecky of Little Canada, Shirley and husband Reece Hoelscher of Mankato, Carolyn and husband Joel Darge of St. Peter, Judy and husband Jerry Floyd of San Antonio, Tex., Karen and husband Dean Helget of New Ulm, Sharon and husband Mark Hanson of Hendricks and Cheryl Gustavson of North Mankato; sons, John and wife Vicki Goblirsch of Fayetteville, NC, Jeffrey and wife Linda Goblirsch of Rossford, Ohio, David and wife Michelle Goblirsch of Sleepy Eye, Robert and wife Kathy Goblirsch of Sleepy Eye, Douglas and wife Connie Goblirsch of Ramsey and Kenneth Goblirsch of Butterfield; daughter-in-law, Pauline Goblirsch of Earlton, Fla., 34 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Mariann Treml of Comfrey, Jane Goblirsch of Fairfax, Sylvan Goblirsch of Comfrey, Angela and husband Robert Augustin of Comfrey, Beatrice Pinska of Tokyo, Japan and Stanley and wife Joyce Goblirsch of California; and sister-in-law, Emily and husband LaVern Tischer of Cambridge. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verna; son, Richard; grandson, Christopher; and three sisters.
Jeremy Eugene Carpenter
Jeremy Eugene Carpenter, 24, Sleepy Eye and formerly of Mt. Iron, died Oct. 9, 2003, at North Memorial Health Care Center, Robbinsdale, as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Through his death, Jeremy gave the gift of life as an organ donor. He was born March 13, 1979 in Virginia, the son of Eugene and Valerie (Howg) Carpenter. He graduated from Mt. Iron-Buhl High School in 1997, Mesabi Junior College and Bemidji State University with a degree in criminal justice in 2001. Services were provided by Bauman-Cron Funeral Home in Virginia, phone: 218-741-9593.
Jeremy interned with the St. Louis County Sheriff's Dept., served as an officer with the Chisholm and Virginia Police Departments and was currently serving as an officer with the Sleepy Eye Police Department. He started working at age 11 for Vern's Greenhouse, worked for the Mt. Iron Recreation Dept. and was a Minnesota First Responder. He was a mentor to the developmentally disabled adults and youth of the Virginia area; and was a coach for Special Olympics Ski Team. Jeremy coached many Legion, V.F.W. and Babe Ruth baseball teams, was an umpire, taught Sunday School and volunteered with the Summer Sidewalk Club at church. He lettered in three high school sports and continued to play baseball in college. He was a confirmed member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Mt. Iron and belonged to the Law Enforcement Labor Services Union Post 195, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, was President of the Criminal Justice Club; and was active with numerous other clubs and organizations in Bemidji. With his outgoing personality, Jeremy touched the lives of all he met, both young and old. His keen sense of fairness led him to a career in Criminal Justice. Jeremy had many interests and hobbles including: Chevrolets, especially Monte Carlos; snowmobiling, motorcycling, shooting pool, camping, snowboarding and the outdoors; but most of all had a love of people, especially the elderly and the young. He was blessed with a compassionate and giving heart and was a special friend to many. Jeremy had a deep faith in God and his family was of ultimate importance to him.
He is survived by his parents, Eugene and Valerie; brother, Zach of Mt. Iron; grandmothers, Dorothy Carpenter of Virginia, Vearl Howg of Deer River and Loretta Eastman of Seattle, Wash.; great-grandparents, Harold and Inez Isaacs of Rantoul, Ill.; fiance, Tina Adams and her daughter, Cambria Carlson; aunts and uncles, Susan (Michael) Haavisto, Terry (Debbie) Carpenter, Lynda Blake, Mary Jo (Glenn) Kuehl, Dale (Pat) Howg, Sheila (Bob) Deutsch, Marilyn (Ron) Geving; Auntie Penny; Uncle Dick and Uncle Larry; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Scott; grandfathers, George Howg and Ray Carpenter; aunt, Cheryl Pogue; uncles, Michael Carpenter and Sonny Eastman, Auntie Jean; Granny and Grandpa John Carpenter.
