C. Mae Suliin
C. Mae Suliin, South 63rd Ave West, passed away on Sun., Sept. 26, 2004 in Lake Haven Manor. She was 88.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1915 to John and Grace Reiley in International Falls, Minn. Mae married Waino Suliin on Sept. 1, 1934 in Gheen, Minn. Mae had worked for Klearflax Linen Looms, Chun King Corp. and Fashion Cleaners and for the last 43 years, she was a homemaker and a mentor to her family. She loved gardening, crocheting, cooking and baking. She was a former member of The Lutheran Church of Christ the King.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Waino, and sisters Lucille and Ethel.

She is survived by daughters Barbara and Betty Suliin, both of Duluth, sons Marvin of Duluth, Jack (MaryAnn) of Proctor and Kevin (Joann) of Hermantown, a sister Bonne Cunningham of Colo., grandchildren Randy (Taire), Paula, Angelica, Wayne (Jean), David (Amy), Ahna, Jacob and Benjamin, five stepgrandchildren and their families, five great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Burial in Oneota Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Lake Haven Manor Bus Fund.

Sister Clement (Rose) Fried
Sister Clement (Rose) Fried, OSB, who taught at St. Rose, Proctor, died Thurs., Sept. 23, 2004 in Benet Hall at the Monastery. She was 101.

She entered the Duluth Benedictines in 1921 and professed her monastic vows in 1923. Sister Clement was in the 81st year of her monastic profession. Sister Clement was born in Mandan, N.D. She lived in Mandan and attended school there until coming to Duluth, where she earned a teacher’s certification from the former Duluth Normal School. In 1923, Sister Clement was a housemother at St. James Children’s Home, Duluth. This was followed by teaching assignments in a number of elementary schools. In 1969, Sister Clement retired from teaching and became patient activities director/visitor at the Red Lake Hospital on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. In 1973, she retired to St. Mary’s Convent, Duluth, where she remained until moving to the Monastery in 1981.

Sister Clement was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Besides the Sister of St. Scholastica Monastery, she is survived by one brother Peter (Margaret) of Mandan, N.D., her sister Sister Ralphine of Bismarck, N.D., a sister-in-law Ida Fried of Mandan, N.D. and many other relatives and friends.

Interment was in Gethsemane Cemetery.

Rose Marie Denzler
Rose Marie Denzler of Proctor, who was the first patient at Miller Dwan Hospital, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in her home. She was 88.

She was born in Duluth and attended the Duluth School of Beauty Culture. She passed her boards and obtained a manager’s license in 1938. She worked for her brother Tom Rand and in other beauty shops including the Deluxe Beauty Shop on 40th Ave. West. Rose married Floyd H. Denzler in 1941. While playing baseball she broke her leg sliding into second base. Her leg never healed, it was discovered that she had osteomylitis. Rose spent three years in St. Mary’s Hospital and later transferred to the Gillette State Hospital for Children in St. Paul where she stayed for many years. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church Proctor and the Legion of Mary at St. Rose. She participated in functions at the Benedictine Adult Day Care Center.

Rose is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and five brothers.

She survived by children, Garry (Sally) Denzler, Portland, Ore., Randis (Robert) Lessard, Jon (Bonnie) Denzler, Hermantown, Lynn Ann (Scott) Hollatz, Tina (Scott) St. John, Jan (Sue) Denzler; a brother, Robert Rendulich; sisters, Josephine Leutzinzer, of Des Moines, Iowa, Florence Burger, of Duluth, and MaryAnn Della Marna, of Alta Loma, Calif.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, and a special friend Olivia Gustofson.

Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Ruby Elizabeth (Erickson) Swedberg
Former Pike Lake resident Ruby Elizabeth (Erickson) Swedberg, died Oct. 7, 2004 at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 91.

Ruby graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1931 and married Dr. William A. Swedberg in 1950. Ruby was a member of First Methodist Church. She presided over the St. Louis County Medical Auxiliary and served on the board of the Duluth Women’s Club and YWCA.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by four nieces, and a nephew.

A private graveside service will be held.

Roy J. Clancey
Services were held earlier in the week for Roy J. Clancey, of Proctor and Green Valley, Ariz. He died Oct. 8, 2004 at the age of 69.

He was born in July 4, 1935 and graduated from Denfeld High School in 1953. He married Evelyn Radtke in 1955. He was an Elder and charter member of Peace In Christ Lutheran Church and member of Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Green Valley, Ariz.

Roy was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother, Pearl Clancey; his wife of 49 years, Evelyn; children, Pat (Ann) Clancey and Jeff (Paula) Clancey; grandchildren, Ian, Brian, Kelly, Brooke, Jacqueline and Jeffrey; sister, Gayle (Rick) Eklund; and his dog, Tula.

Eugene A. ‘Babe’ Andrys
Ernest ‘Ernie,’ Andrys of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother Eugene A. ‘Babe’ Andrys. He died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 in his Duluth home at the age of 66.

He was born in Duluth on Sept. 11, 1938 and was an Army Veteran, serving with the Artillery in Germany. Babe married Darlene Prior in Duluth in 1961. He worked at the former Whitney Concrete and later retired from Arrowhead Concrete in 1999.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a brother.

He is also survived by his two daughters, two sisters, his sister-in-law and best friend, Linda Andrys and four grandchildren.

Interment Oneota Cemetery.

Judith Elizabeth Partika
A memorial service will be held for Judith Elizabeth Partika Sat., Oct. 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Proctor Community Center, 100 Pionk Dr. She passed away Tues., Oct. 5, 2004 in Rochester, Minn. She would have been 59 on October 17.

She is survived by her husband Dennis, daughter Kimberly of Mapleton, sister Karen Alexander of Phoenix, Ariz., brothers Bill (Faith) Lamkin of Chaska and Mike (Sue) Lamkin of Janesville and many nieces and nephews.

Judy loved life and being around her family and friends. During her battle with cancer she made many more friends and enjoyed being with them also. She loved going to the lake, working in her flower gardens, quilting and most of all people. Judy had to leave her work at Sam’s Club in Mankato after many years when she began her battle with cancer.

We have lost a wife, mother and best friend. May she rest in peace.

Annette (Charles) Corlett
Annette (Charles) Corlett, III of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Marguerite M. Nuorala. The Babbitt resident died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center. She was 76.

She was born in Brookston, Minn. and was a graduate of the Brookston High School. She married Sulo J. Nuorala in 1946, in Duluth. They had lived in Duluth and Bovey before becoming Babbitt residents in August of 1956. Marguerite worked at the Babbitt Drug for 18 years. She was a charter member of the Woodland Presbyterian Church of Babbitt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and five brothers.

Survivors also include her husband Sulo of Babbitt; two other daughters, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one sister,; three brothers, James (Verna) Flynn of Esko, Thomas (Diane) Flynn, sister-in-law Florence Dailey of Hermantown; nieces and nephews.

Burial in Argo Cemetery, Babbitt.

Robert William “Bob” Wright
Robert William “Bob” Wright, who in 1967 with his wife Gerry purchased Rainbow Roller Rink in Proctor, passed away on Sat., Oct. 9, 2004. He was 79.

He was born in Minneapolis, Minn. He joined the Army Air Force at the age of 17 during World War II, where he served as a flight technician on B-24 Bombers. In 1967, Bob and Gerry purchased Rainbow Roller Rink in Proctor. In 1975, they built and opened the World of Wheels Skate Center in Superior, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Gerry, a sister and his parents.

He is survived by his five children, one brother, 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held last week.

Carl V. Anderson
Carl R. (Kaye) Anderson, Proctor is mourning the death of his father, Carl V. Anderson. The former Lincoln Park, Duluth, native died Sat., Oct. 16, 2004 in Grand Marais. He was 87.

He was born and raised in Duluth. Carl was an Army Air Corps Veteran of WW II, serving in Africa and Egypt. He married his wife Selma “Sally” in Duluth in 1949. He had worked for the St. Louis County Highway Dept. for over 30 years, retiring as Superintendent. Carl was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, All-American Club, Life Member of Moose Lodge 1478, and former member of Trinity Masonic Lodge.

His parents, wife, sister Edith and brother Walter preceded him in death.

He is also survived by his daughter Nancy (Cliff) Iverson, Grand Marais, five grandsons, three granddaughters and three great- granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment at Sunrise Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
