Wilbert E. Haala, Jr.
Wilbert E. Haala, Jr., 58, Coon Rapids, formerly of the New Ulm area, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at his home in Coon Rapids. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 28, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles, with Father John A. Richter celebrating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Full military honors were conducted by the New Ulm Veterans organizations. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30-9 a.m. Friday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There was a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Wilbert is survived by his wife, Lisa, of Coon Rapids; daughters and sons-in-law, Jody and Rick Mortensen of Coon Rapids, and Laura and Mark Hochhalter of Stacy; son, Wilbert "Bill" Haala III of Dayton; step-daughters, Tina Zachmann of Savage, Katy Zachmann and Sara Zachmann, both of Coon Rapids; parents, Wilbert Sr. and Angeline Haala of rural New Ulm; grandchildren, Anthony, Colleen, Cody, Julie and Jordan; step-grandchildren, Justin, Derek and Ashley; godparents, Elmer and Mabel Haala of Sleepy Eye; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lynette Huiras and Joyce and Robert Mickelson, all of Sleepy Eye; Marlys and Jim Dyvig of St. Louis Park, Carol and Pat Haubrich of rural New Ulm; brothers, Tom and Donna Haala of Madison Lake, Mike and Shirley Haala, Paul and Cheryl Haala and Robert Haala and special friend, Amy Steinhaus, all of rural New Ulm; and many nieces; nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert Huiras.
Wilbert was born June 8, 1945, in Springfield, to Wilbert Sr. and Angeline (Roiger) Haala. He was a 1963 graduate of New Ulm Public High School. On Oct. 16, 1999, Wilbert was united in marriage to Lisa Wellf. Wilbert had worked for Unisys Corporation out of Minneapolis. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.
Casket bearers were Troy Huiras, Larry Haala, Jeff Mickelson, Chad Zemple, Ryan Haala and Jeremy Lang.

John "Jackie" F. Sellner
John "Jackie" F. Sellner, Jr. 68, died at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004.
Jackie was born Nov. 19, 1935. Formerly of Sleepy Eye, he lived in Minneapolis the past 25 years, where he held a variety of jobs as a laborer. Jackie enjoyed visiting with his friends and neighbors. Prior to his health problems, he enjoyed many hours of fishing and canoeing on Lake Nokomis. Jackie was a participant in the University of Minnesota Medical School Bequest Program and as such, a private interment will be held at a later date at the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Jackie is survived by his sisters, Judy and husband Charles Fearn of Minneapolis, Doreen LaGare of Redwood Falls, and Irene Seifert of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Robert Sellner of New Ulm, Alvin Sellner of Sleepy Eye and Roger Sellner of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John, Sr. and Minnie (Heller) Sellner; brother, Jerome; and infant siblings, Darlene and James.

Richard "Dick" J. Baumann
Richard J. Baumann, 82, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Care Center. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Saturday, Aug. 28, with interment at the church cemetery. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Richard was born Feb. 14, 1922, in Lake Lillian, the son of John Frank and Cecelia (Martinka) Baumann. He grew up on a farm in the Bird Island area. He entered the United States Army in July of 1944, and served in Europe and Germany during WWII until June of 1946. Dick married Barbara Richter on Aug. 7, 1948, in Bird Island. Dick owned the Skelly Station in Bird Island and in 1962, moved to Sleepy Eye, where he owned and operated the Skelly Station. He also worked in real estate from 1978 until 1985. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, VFW, DAV and Legion and Knights of Columbus. Dick enjoyed fishing, gardening, going to coffee, travel, visiting and church dinners.
Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara of Sleepy Eye; children and their spouses, Mary Baumann and Bill Durdin of Sleepy Eye, Doug and Avis Baumann of Minneapolis, Linda and Carl Erlandson of Jacksonville, N.C., Dan and Andrea Baumann of Minnetonka, Liz and Steve Koskiniemi of Staples and Andy and Mary Baumann of Green Bay, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Flann and Lillian Peterson, both of California and Pearl and husband, David Wallenta of Lake Lillian. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John; brothers, Marvin Baumann, Vernon Baumann and Harold Baumann.

Clifford E. Nelson
Clifford E. Nelson, 72, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Care Center. Funeral services were held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, on Friday, Aug. 27, 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Timothy Grams. Interment arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com.
Cliff was born Dec. 24, 1931, in Pleasant Mound Township, Blue Earth County, the son of Charles B. and Florence (Russ) Nelson. He grew up near St. James and attended District #52 Country School, later attending St. James High School where he graduated in 1951. Cliff worked with his family on the farm for a short time before entering the U.S. Marines in 1952. After his discharge in 1954, Cliff returned to St. James and later went to work for Kraft in New Ulm. He married Joann Schwantes on March 8, 1958, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Good Thunder. The couple made their home in New Ulm, Winona and later moved to Sleepy Eye in 1973. Cliff worked in the printing business in New Ulm, Winona, Sleepy Eye and the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. His last years were spent working with Preferred Printing in Madelia. Cliff was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. He enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, reading and watching sports on TV. Survivors include his wife, Joann Nelson of Sleepy Eye; children, Shelly Nelson of Minneapolis, Kevin and wife Doreen Nelson of Perham, Allan Nelson of New Ulm, Holly and husband Randy Weikle of Fairfax, Daren Nelson of New Ulm and Karen Nelson of New Ulm; grandchildren, Jessica and Ryan Weikle, Kara and Sean Nelson and Cydney and Landon Nelson; sisters, Alma Mathiowetz of New Ulm and Bonnie Lunz of Madelia; and brother, Leslie Nelson of St. James. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Carl.

Regina Sieg
Regina Sieg, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services were Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements. Regina was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Madelia, the daughter of Gustav and Jennie (Johnson) Sandberg. She grew up and attended school in Madelia. Regina married Gerhard Geiger in 1940, in Madelia. Regina worked at Tony Downs Foods in Madelia for 11 years. Gerhard preceded her in death in 1964. Regina married Raymond Sieg on April 15, 1978, in Madelia. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Regina worked for Del Monte for 11 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1979. Regina enjoyed baking and had a wonderful sense of humor. She also had a competitive spirit and enjoyed many activities.
Regina is survived by her husband, Raymond Sieg of Sleepy Eye; children, Gerald Geiger of Gibbon, Norm Geiger and wife Corrine O'Neill of West St. Paul, Shirley Geiger of South St. Paul and Roger and wife Debbie Geiger of Welcome; 12 grandchildren; many loving great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Nootenboom and Freda Freeman, both of Madelia. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerhard Geiger; brothers, Klos Sandberg and William Sandberg; and sisters, Dora Geiger and Rose Payton.

Phyllis Wintheiser
Phyllis Ann Wintheiser died Aug. 20, 2004. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Father Douglas Grams was celebrant. Graveside services were held by Father Brian Oestreich at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Morgan.
Phyllis was born March 27, 1938, in Morgan Township, Redwood County, the daughter of Wenzel and Clara (Steffensmeier) Wintheiser. Shortly after graduating from Morgan High School, Phyllis moved to New Ulm, where she worked more than 25 years as a telephone operator for NU Telecom. She was very skilled in fancy work and enjoyed playing the organ. Since being diagnosed with MS, Phyllis had been working hard to organize an MS support group. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm and Catholic Aid.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Shaun Wintheiser and his companion, Joanna Schnobrich of Jackson; brothers, Leo and wife Marcella Wintheiser of Marshall, Denis and wife Rosemary Wintheiser of Fairmont and Bill and wife Maggie Wintheiser of Sleepy Eye; sister-in-law, Irene Wintheiser of Morgan; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by four brothers.

Walter "Wally" Peters
Walter "Wally" Peters, 82, Marion, Iowa, passed away Aug. 27, 2004, from complications resulting from Alzheimer's. A funeral Mass was held Saturday, Sept. 4, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marion. Murdoch Funeral Home of Marion handled the arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of East Central Iowa, 1570 42nd St. NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.
Wally was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Sleepy Eye. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He participated in the recapture of Attu and Kiska from the Japanese in 1943. At the end of the war, he was stationed near Boston until his release in 1945. Wally married Marian Baumann in New Ulm, on Oct. 18, 1947. He graduated from Central Technical College of Kansas City, Mo., in 1949. Wally was a founding engineer of KNUJ Radio in New Ulm, where he lived for six years. Wally moved his family to Iowa in 1954, and he worked for WMT/Channel 2 until his retirement in 1984. He was actively involved with St. Joseph's Catholic Church and enjoyed many hobbies including amateur radio, wood and rock carving and painting. Wally also enjoyed many sports, especially baseball. His family and friends will miss his good-natured smile.
Wally is survived by his wife, Marian; daughters, Georgiann and husband Jeff Sinkey of Dublin, Ohio and Julie Ernster of Omaha, Neb.; son, Greg Peters of Cambridge, Mass.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mayme Peters; and brothers, James Peters and Donald Peters.
