Elizabeth "Betty" Hillesheim
Betty Hillesheim, 69, Gaylord, passed away Friday, June 25, 2004, at her home. Funeral services were Monday, June 28, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Arlington, with interment in Gaylord Municipal Cemetery. Egesdal Funeral Home of Gaylord handled the arrangements.
Elizabeth "Betty" Ann (Schneider) Hillesheim was born Oct. 31, 1934, in New Ulm, the daughter of Peter and Julia (Sturm) Schneider. She attended Holy Trinity High School in New Ulm, graduating in 1952. Betty was united in marriage with Lyle Hillesheim on Aug. 26, 1953, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. Betty worked various jobs throughout their marriage and especially enjoyed caring for her family. Betty and Lyle lived in various towns before moving to Gaylord. In 1984, they moved to Emily, where they owned and operated The Call of the Loon Resort. In 1994, they sold the resort and continued to live by the lake. In January 2002, they moved to Gaylord to be close to family and friends.
Betty is survived by her children, Mark and wife Deb Hillesheim of Buffalo, Greg and wife Regina Hillesheim of Eagan, Vicky and husband Joe Goettl of Mankato, Lynn and husband Tom Tommelleo of New Castle, Pa., Lori and husband Kevin Martens of Gaylord and Jan and husband Everett Bratsch of Glencoe; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers and sisters, Delores Groebner of New Ulm, Joseph and wife Audrey Schneider of New Ulm, Peter Schneider of New Ulm, Lucy Waldrep of Texas, Marie Wiltscheck of Gibbon, Francis and wife Carol Schneider of New Ulm and Madlyn and husband Herb Halvorson of Hanska. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle on Sept. 26, 2002; parents; brother, Jerome Schneider; and sisters, Rita Braulick and Martha James.

Lawrence Matzdorf
Lawrence Matzdorf, 71, Redwood Falls, died at his home on Thursday, June 24, 2004. Funeral services were held Monday, June 28, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. Burial with military honors followed at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice, St. Catherine's Church or the Minnesota DNR. Nelson-Marten Funeral Service of Redwood Falls handled the arrangements.
Lawrence was born July 24, 1932, in Buffalo Lake, the son of Ernest and Helen (Pelz) Matzdorf. He received his education in Buffalo Lake and farmed until serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. On June 18, 1955, Lawrence was united in marriage with Rosemary Korpal in Minneapolis. They resided in Redwood Falls during their entire married life. Lawrence was a mechanic at Scott Preusse for 42 years until retiring in 1997. He was an active member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, serving as a eucharistic minister, usher and also served on the parish council. His interests included camping, fishing, gardening, hunting and card playing. He was a handyman and also enjoyed wood cutting. Lawrence also served as an auxiliary policeman. Most important to him was his family and friends.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rosemary of Redwood Falls; children, Mary Ann and husband John Ebenhoh of Sleepy Eye, Larry and wife Sandy Matzdorf of North Oaks and Susan and husband Jeff Tesch of Bemidji; grandchildren, Sarah, Amanda and Cassandra Nelson and their father, Chuck; Lauren, and Ashlen Matzdorf; and Tara and Vincent Tesch; step-grandchildren, Teegan and Riley Ebenhoh; sister, Ann Heinecke of Carlton and Earl Matzdorf and wife Janet of Buffalo Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Wesley Heinecke.

Judith Grace "Judi" Warnke
Judith Grace "Judi" Warnke, 65, Minot, died Monday, June 28, 2004, in a Minot Medical Center, due to complications following heart bypass surgery. Funeral services are Thursday, July 1, 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Minot, N.D, with interment in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Judith was born June 14, 1939, in Tracy, the daughter of Wilbert Simon and Bernita Grace (Madden) Vanderwerf. She attended school and graduated from Sleepy Eye High School. On Feb. 21, 1959, Judith married Melvin L. Warnke. They made their home in Mankato, from February 1959 until October 1961. They moved to Faribault and lived there until December 1966, when then moved back to Mankato until August 1972. In 1972, they moved to Willmar and resided there until moving to Minot in April 1975. Judith and Melvin's seven children all graduated from Minot High School. While in Minot, Judith worked for Minot Laundry, the Elks Lodge, Piggly Wiggly and Minot State University from 1997 to present. Melvin passed away on Oct. 1, 1997. Judith was a member of First Lutheran Church of Minot.
Judith is survived by her children, Michael and wife Shannon Warnke, Sioux Falls, S.D. and son, Matthew and their daughters, Amanda and Christina; Lori and husband Tim Opp, Bismarck, N.D., and children, Kyle and Stacy, Kathi and husband Kevin Hilzendeger, Bismarck, and children Greg, Austin and Alex; David and wife Joan Warnke, Grand Forks, N.D., and children Jason, Kevin and Rebecca, Julie and husband Mike Marchus, Minot, and children, McKayla and Matthew; and Steven and wife Jody Warnke, Minot, and children Halie and Jaycie Rostad; two great-grandchildren, Mitchel Warnke and Hunter Warnke; mother, Bernita Vanderwerf, Sleepy Eye; brothers, Gary (Jody) Vanderwerf, Windom, Roy (Sally) Vanderwerf, Minneapolis, Twollie Vanderwerf, Burnsville and Kevin (Kim) Vanderwerf, Oro Valley, Ariz.; sisters, Donna Frost, Brooklyn Center, Janice (Dennis) Krueger, Willmar and Geraldine Schaikoski, Fairmont; numerous nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Warnke; son, Robert Warnke; and father Wilbert Simon Vanderwerf.

Kenneth (Kenny) A. Losleben
Kenneth (Kenny) A. Losleben, 73, of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at his home after a 15-month battle with lung cancer. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye on Saturday, July 3, at 10 a.m., with interment in the church cemetery. The Clergy was Fr. Brian Oestreich. Kenneth Arnold Losleben, the son of Arnold and Theresa (Fischer) Losleben was born March 7, 1931, in Home Township. He attended Country School Dist. 191 in Home Township and St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. He farmed on the family farm for over 30 years in Home Township, Brown County when his son took over the farming. He worked at Carl's Corner, Essig and Meyer's Bar, Sleepy Eye. In 1985, Kenny started working at the Farmers Elevator in fertilizer and grain divisions until 2003, when Kenny was diagnosed with lung cancer. Kenny was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Aid Society. He was on the School Board of District 191 for over five years and Home Township Board for 21 years, until his death. He was also a camp host at Fort Ridgely, Fairfax for three years. He enjoyed camping, woodworking, yard work and especially visits from his grandchildren and playing cards with them. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and most of all meeting the gang at Essig for morning coffee. Kenny was married to Marjorie D. Sellner on June 2, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of rural Sleepy Eye; daughters, Lynn Losleben and her husband Jay Ayers of Camano Island, Wash., and LuAnn Schwint and her husband George of Sleepy Eye; son, Michael Losleben and his wife Tina of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, George Schwint and his wife Deanna, Jacklyn Schwint, Jennifer Schwint, Michael Ayers and Lauren Ayers and Tina's children, Joshua, Christian and Jessica; brothers, Armin Losleben and his wife Lucille of Sleepy Eye and James Losleben of Mendota Heights; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.

Myrtle O. Turbes
Myrtle 0. Turbes, 80, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Care Center. Funeral service were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye on Wednesday, July 7, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. The Clergy was Pastor Ron Freimark. Myrtle (Olson) Turbes was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Albin Township, Brown County, to John and Mabel (Rossbach) Olson. She attended District 28 Country School and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public School in 1941. She graduated from Minneapolis Business College as a legal secretary in 1942, and worked at the First National Bank in Sleepy Eye for five years. She married Sylvester N. Turbes in Sleepy Eye on Jan. 16, 1946. They resided in Springfield for 10 years where her husband worked for Conley's Clothing Store. They moved back to Sleepy Eye in November 1959, where she and her husband owned Turbes Clothing, Inc. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. She served as president of the Springfield and Sleepy Eye American Legion Auxiliarys and was a member of the Past Presidents in both Springfield and Sleepy Eye. Myrtle served as secretary to the Second District American Legion Auxiliary in 1961. She served as Head Start Director for county areas during 1968-1971, as Region 9 Field Representative for ARC from 1971-1973, assisted her husband in Turbes Clothing, Inc., was president of the Sleepy Eye PTA, lay board member for 12 years for Brown Co., served 12 years with Brown-Nicollet Community Health Board and was Chairman for Brown-Nicollet Environmental Health Committee and served 10 years as Minnesota Region 9 Social Services Assistant. Myrtle enjoyed gardening, reading, crocheting, working with plants, playing cards and working in leadership positions.
Myrtle is survived by her husband, Sylvester N. Turbes of Sleepy Eye; sons, Stanley and wife Karen Turbes of Hanska and their children, Christopher, Matt and Shawna and her husband Jeff Sellner; great-grandchild, Lexus Stimpert; and Larry Turbes and wife Jean Elton Turbes of Duluth and their children, Jennifer and Joshua. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Norma Petersen.

Rodd J. Gould
Rodd J. Gould, 54, Chanhassen, went to be with the Lord on July 6, 2004. Born in Receife, Brazil on Jan. 2, 1950, he grew up in Sleepy Eye where he graduated from high school. He then attended and graduated from Mankato State College, Mankato. Rodd served in Viet Nam, where he received the Bronze Star Medal. He returned to Mankato State as an instructor. He was Grand National Karate Champ for three years. In his last years, he came to know Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour, that knowledge sustained him through his struggles with cancer.
A Memorial Services was held Monday, July 12 at Cremation Society of Minnesota in Edina, with interment, with honors, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Rodd is survived by his wife, Pamalla; children, Matthew Gould, Kristin Gould and Debra and husband Mike Hamilton; grandchildren, Chelsey, Justin and Jordan Hamilton; siblings, Ray and wife Linda Gould and Dean and wife Linda Blumthal; a niece and two nephews. Rodd was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Howard Gould.

Wilbert A. Baumann
Wilbert A. Baumann, 88, West Newton Township, Nicollet County, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004. at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 19, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with Father Samuel Perez celebrating. Burial was in New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Wilbert Anton Baumann was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Sigel Township, Brown County to Henry and Anna (Schmid) Baumann. On Oct. 15, 1941, Wilbert married Rose Vetter at St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County. After marriage, they farmed in Sigel Township for four years until moving to West Newton Township, Nicollet County, farming until 1995, when they retired. Wilbert spent his life farming by his wife's side and loved John Deeres. He took great pride in having good crops, enjoyed listening and dancing to old time music and loved traveling. He found great joy in being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. John's Court #698 Catholic Order of Foresters and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
Wilbert is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Thomas Berg of New Ulm; grandchildren, Colleen and Robert Skillings of New Ulm, Kirsten Berg of New Ulm and T. Eric Berg of Minneapolis; great-grandsons, Theodore Skillings and Michael Skillings both of New Ulm; sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Jerry Bushore of Peoria, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Bernice Baumann and Marie Hoffmann, both of New Ulm; and a brother-in-law, Albert Kral and his wife, Lorraine of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose Baumann on April 7, 1996; daughter, Ruth Baumann; sisters, Dorothy Harbitz and Shirley Kral; and by a brother, Henry Baumann.
