Verna Niemann
Verna Niemann, 97, New Ulm, died Saturday morning, June 19, 2004, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 25, at United Church of Christ in New Ulm, with Rev. Henry Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Verna Remmele, the daughter of Charles and Bertha (Baugatz) Remmele, was born Nov. 29, 1906, in Stark Township, Brown County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye and attended District 39 Country School near Sleepy Eye. Verna married Charles "Coggie" Niemann Oct. 31, 1936, in New Ulm. They made their home in New Ulm where she was employed by Dr. Hammermeister, Olson Drug Store and Schmucker Reliable Drug. She also owned and operated Coggie's Bar with her husband until their retirement in 1972. Her husband died April 20, 1987. Verna was a member of the United Church of Christ, a sixty-year member of the Turner Ladies and a member of the Brown County Historical Society.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Margaret Fisch of Mesa, Ariz., Sandra Borth and husband Ron of New Ulm, Douglas Krueger of Owatonna and Donn Bruess and wife Audrey of Sleepy Eye. She is also survived by several great-nieces and great-nephews, which include two special great-nieces, Michelle Foley and husband Tom and Holly Ulrich and husband Brad; and two very special great-great- nieces, Katelyn and Kortney Ulrich. In addition to her husband, Verna was preceded in death by sisters, Elsie Hale, Florence Lendt, Viola Bruess, Mabel Krueger and Mildred Koosmann; niece, Inez Sucker; and nephew, Charles Hale. Verna also leaves behind many wonderful friends and neighbors.

Richard "Rusty" Rembold
Richard "Rusty" Rembold, was born Oct. 12, 1915, to Christian and Christina (Kraemer) Rembold on their Kaylor, S.D. farmstead. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kaylor and attended Kaylor Elementary School and graduated from the 8th grade. He was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kaylor. Rusty farmed with his family on the Rembold homestead north of Kaylor. He entered the military as a member of the Army Air Corps on Nov. 6, 1942. Rusty served stateside and then in the Pacific Theater where he was stationed in Guam. He was honorably discharged from active duty on Feb. 14, 1946. Rusty was united in marriage to Lois Newlon on July 14, 1946, at the First Baptist Church in Mitchell, S.D. To this union were born Barbara Ann, Marlene, Wanda, Roger, Joyce, Lillian and Joan. They farmed in the Kaylor and Parkston areas until 1954, then moved to Rapid City, S.D. where Rusty took up carpentry. In 1958, they moved to Sleepy Eye and farmed until returning to Scotland, S.D. in 1960. Rusty was a carpenter and owned and operated Rusty Rembold Construction in Scotland and the surrounding area until his retirement. Rusty was a family man who will be missed for his jokes and stories. He enjoyed the company of both young and old. His interests included fishing, hunting, gardening, raising roses, playing cards, woodworking, collecting key chains and miniature tractors. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Scotland and served on its church council. He was also a member of the Scotland V.F.W. Post #2966 and the Scotland Historical Society. He became a resident of the Scotland Good Samaritan Center in December 2003. After suffering a stroke, Rusty died on Monday, May 24, 2004, at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland at the age of 88 years. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 27, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Scotland, S.D., with Rev. David Ellis presiding. Arrangements were under the direction of Goglin-Kelley Funeral Home of Scotland.
Grateful for having shared Rusty's life are his wife, Lois Rembold, of Scotland; daughters, Marlene Rembold of Scotland and Wanda (Larry) Dolejsi of Yankton, S.D.; grandchildren, Carrie (Willie) Russaw of Yankton, Melissa (Scott) Plath of Yankton and Laura (Michael) Schumacher of Rapid City, S.D.; son, Roger (Rosa) Rembold of Kaneohe, Hawaii; grandchildren, Vince (Lori) Dydasco of Hawaii Kai, Elvin (Jolyn) Dydasco of Kaneohe, Jose (Misty) Dydasco of Honolulu, Hawaii, Millie Dydasco of San Mateo, Calif. and Lourdes (Edward) Pedemonte of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Joyce Brunken of Yankton; and grandchildren, Megan (Adam) Hansen of Pierre, S.D. and Jeff Brunken of Yankton; daughter, Lillian (Elden) Helms of Creighton, S.D.; and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily and Eli Helms, all of Creighton; daughter, Joan Rembold of Honolulu; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Grace Caffey of Duluth; and eight nieces and nephews.
Rusty was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Ann; his parents, Christian and Christina Rembold; brothers, Rueben Rembold and Clarence Rembold; sister, Louise Burr; brother-in-law, Robert Newlon; and nephew John Newlon.

Albert Franke
Albert Henry Franke, 93, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com.
Albert was born Nov. 2, 1910, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, the son of Albert and Annie (Schmitz) Franke, Sr. On Sept. 23, 1950, Albert married Mavis Virginia Stiehm in New Ulm. Albert helped area farmers in Morgan, Morton and Sleepy Eye. He later lived and farmed north of Sleepy Eye until moving in to Sleepy Eye, where he retired. Mavis preceded him in death in 1992. Albert lived at Sleepy Eye Care Center since 1996. Albert enjoyed fishing, gardening, flowers and working in the yard. He loved all animals, especially dogs.
Albert is survived by his sister-in-law, Norma Franke of New Ulm; brother-in-law, LeRoy Stiehm of Sleepy Eye and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mavis; son, LeRoy; infant son, Lyle; brothers, Arthur Franke, Leonard Franke and Fred Franke; sisters, Bertha Kuelbs, Merty Steiner, Minnie Hager, and Eleanora Gramentz; infant sister, Elaine; four brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

Edna B. Kettner
Edna Bertha Amanda (Voge) Kettner, 85, Springfield, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Springfield Medical Center Hospital in Springfield. Funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Springfield, on Monday, May 3, with interment in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Springfield. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Edna was born Dec. 14, 1918, in Northstar Township, Brown County, the daughter of Herman and Marie (Haseleu) Voge. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield. Edna was united in marriage to Elmer Kettner on March 4, 1937, also at St. Paul Lutheran Church. They farmed in Northstar Township and following Elmer's death in 1990, Edna continued to live on the farm until moving to Springfield in 1999. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Rebecca Circle. Edna enjoyed gardening, crocheting, quilting, playing cards and especially enjoyed her family.
She is survived by children, Lois and husband Doug Dion of Mound, Jean and husband Allan Breitbarth of Hopkins, Judith and husband Ronald Traurig of New Ulm, Darlene and husband Rodney Simkins of Cottonwood, Calif., Jerome and wife Jerrine Kettner of Springfield, Douglas and wife Sharon Kettner of Eau Claire, Wis., and Sharon and husband Roy Schwegel of Burnsville; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene and husband Norman Krebs of Sleepy Eye, Mary Lou Schubbe of Springfield, and Margie and husband Chuck Schwartz of Tracy; and brother, Alfred Voge of Tracy. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; son, Kenneth in infancy; and brother, Alvin Voge.

Florence Crouch
Florence Crouch, 89, wife of the late Neil Crouch, recently passed away in California. Neil was born in Tracy and raised in Sleepy Eye. Graveside services will be held at Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye, on Thursday, May 13 at 11 a.m., with Father Brian Oestreich officiating. Janice Dimas and Bob Crouch, the daughter and son of Florence will be in attendance along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Local arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Adelia (Hillesheim) Gerfen
Adelia "Odie" (Hillesheim) Gerfen, 87, Seattle, Wash., died March 10, 2004, at Olympia Health Care in Sequim, Wash. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sequim, with interment at the family crypt at Port Angeles in Washington. A Memorial Service is planned at the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, May 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. A reception in the church basement will be held at 3 p.m., before the Mass. Friends and relatives of the family are invited to attend the reception and Mass.
Adelia, a housewife and socialite, was a native of Sleepy Eye. She was born Sept. 7, 1916, the 11th child of Arnold and Anastasia (Grausam) Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye. On July 12, 1947, Adelia married Colonel Herbert Gerfen and the couple settled in Seattle.
Odie was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, who died in 1995. She is survived by her sister, Margaret (Hillesheim) Nelson of Edina and many nieces and nephews.

Louise Ramona O'Rourke Miscevich
Louise Ramona O'Rourke Miscevich, age 92, of Sleepy Eye, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 17, 10:30 a.m., at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel in Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Clergy was Father Brian Oestreich. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com.
Louise was born Nov. 29, 1911, on a farm near Minnesota Lake, the daughter of Frank and Hattie (Zimny) Stencel. She married Charles O'Rourke on Nov. 25, 1930, and they farmed in Faribault County for 14 years. The couple moved to Sleepy Eye and then Waseca before relocating to California. Charles preceded her in death in June of 1980. Louise married Ray Miscevich in California and following his death, returned to Minnesota. She had been a resident of Divine Providence Community Home the last two years of her life. Louise was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye and enjoyed flowers, especially roses, reading, making special quilts for family and friends and embroidery. She was also known as a great letter writer.
Survivors include daughters Patricia (Stanley) Seifert of Sleepy Eye; Mary Kanelos of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; Carmel Bennett of North Mankato; Beatrice (Eddie) Nevis of Paradise, Calif.; and Joette Juarez of Salinas, Calif.; sons Dennis (Margo) O'Rourke of Mesa, Ariz.; and Dean (Charlene) O'Rourke of Vallejo, Calif.; 37 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary (Gib) Martin of Princeton Ill.; and Eileen (Orville) Botts of San Fernando, Calif. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles O'Rourke; second husband, Ray Miscevich; a son, Charles O'Rourke, Jr.; four brothers; and six sisters.
Casket bearers were Carey Seifert, Craig M. Seifert, William Freitag, Brent Thoreson, Jeffrey Bennett and Bradley Bennett.
