John Elias Hern
Andrew E.N. Powers of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of his father, John Elias Hern. He died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in his Duluth home after a battle with cancer. He was 54.

John was born in Bartlesville, Okla. The family moved to Cherry, Minn., when John was four years old. John graduated from the Cherry High School and St. Cloud State with a degree in Physical Education. John retired from the US Army National Guard as Lt. Colonel. He served as a company commander on the Iron Range as well as a training officer for Officer Candidate School at Ft. Snelling. John served in the Armor Division. John was sales manager for 50 Below. For over 30 years, John was successful in insurance sales to include Northwestern National Life and the Equitable, winning numerous national awards. John was a member of Euclid Lodge 198 A.F. and A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Duluth, AAD Temple Shrine and president and Drum Major of it’s Pipes and Drums Unit; past Monarch of M.O.V.P.E.R. Ela Ala Grotto; past District Administrator, coach and umpire for the area Little League.

John is preceded in death by his father in 1991; and his mother in 2003.

Survivors also include his wife, Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Ann; children, Nicholas J. Hern of St. Paul, Brianne C. Hern of Duluth, John D. (Tara) Young, Jr. of Delaware, Ohio, Garrett W. Young of Duluth, Bryan D.R. Powers of Duluth, and a grandson, John D. Young III of Delaware, Ohio.

Burial will be in Black Hammer, Minn.

Douglas Eugene Pirila, Sr.
Mark Pirila and Virginia (Dan) Tuominen both of Saginaw, are among seven children mourning the death of their father, Douglas Eugene Pirila, Sr. The Floodwood resident died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004 in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was 65.

He was born in Floodwood, the son of John and Alice (Pervorse) Pirila. Doug was employed as a press operator and foreman at Floodwood Industries. For the last ten years, he thoroughly enjoyed providing adult foster care in the Floodwood area. He married Irene Maijala on July 9, 1994 in Floodwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters, and a granddaughter.

Doug is also survived by his wife, Irene, of Floodwood; three other sons, Douglas, Jr. of Duluth, Marvin (Gail) and Erick (Chris), both of Esko; two other daughters, Alice (Jeff) Juusola of Esko and Anna (Charles) Anderson of Cloquet; a brother, Kenneth (Marcy) Pirila of Finlayson; three sisters, Sharon (Warren) Bennett of Floodwood, Elvie Thompson and Sharlene (Clark) Lundin both of Jacobson and 16 grandchildren.

Donna Mae Berg
Donna Mae Berg of Saginaw, who was an area resident most of her life and a 1954 Proctor High School graduate, died Mon., Oct. 11, 2004 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 68.

The Westlund Road resident was born in Duluth to Lloyd and Claudia (Gulstad) Russ. Donna had been employed as a service manager for Jewel Tea Company in Chicago for 27 years. Donna married Carl S. Berg on July 9, 1955 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, where she was a member. Family was most important to Donna. She enjoyed doing for others, cooking, baking and sewing.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Maurice, Robert and Arthur Russ and a sister Arlene Hammerlind.

Survivors include her husband, Carl, daughters Elaine Erickson of Ill., Eileen Berg of Saginaw and Laurie (Ron) Eberwein of Ill., a brother; three sisters, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were last week in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, Pastor Larry Anderson officiating. Burial in Grand Lake Cemetery.

Patricia Anne “Patty” Mork
Kathy (Mark) Severson and Laurie (Dale) Paszak, both of Proctor, are mourning the death of their sister Patricia Anne “Patty” Mork. The Duluth resident died Wed., Oct. 20, 2004 at St. Mary’s Medical Center after a long battle with brain tumors. She was 47.

She was born in Duluth, Minn. to Edwin and Gloria (Burke) Tuttle. Patty married Jeffery J. Mork on Aug. 16, 1995. She was interested in art and did a lot of painting, crafts and crocheting. She enjoyed singing and had done backup singing for different groups. She loved animals.

Patty was preceded in death by her grandparents and her brother Eddy Tuttle, Jr.

Survivors also include her husband Jeff, her parents Edwin and Gloria Tuttle of Hermantown, her children Donny (Loretta) Peterson of Wyo., Amy Peterson of Colo. and Eric (April) Peterson of Texas, three grandchildren, mother-in-law Violet Mork and sister-in-law Deborah Mork, both of Duluth, brother-in-law Bruce Mork of Shakopee, Minn., special friends, Janice and Marita, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Sunday.

Dale Lloyd Hanson
Services were held last week for Dale Lloyd Hanson of Saginaw. He died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 40.

Dale was born on Nov. 21, 1963 in Duluth, Minn., to Lloyd and Rethel Hanson. Dale graduated from Proctor High School in 1982. He was co-owner, with his dad, in L.A. Hanson Trucking, his entire life. During winter months, he operated a snowplowing business. Dale was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in Twig, and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Assn. Dale was a wonderful son, brother, and father enjoying fishing, hunting, camping and just being together with his son and family. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca.

He is survived by his son, Kyle, the apple of his eye and best buddy; his best friend and dad, Lloyd and mother, Rethel of Saginaw; sisters, Roxane (Larry) Davis, Hermantown, Carol (David) Eckstrom, Saginaw, and Debra (Brian) Billman, Saginaw; nieces and nephews, Devaney and Keri Kipina, Dave and Amanda Eckstrom, Boyd and Grace Billman; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Burial at Grand Lake Cemetery, Twig.

Edith Mabel Dryden Nosek
A memorial service will be held for Edith Mabel Dryden Nosek on Sat., Oct. 30, 2004, 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6822 Grand Ave., Duluth. The 1937 graduate of Proctor High School died Sat., Oct. 23, 2004.

Edith was born on Sept. 19, 1919, in Mahnomen, Minn. She moved with her family to Proctor. In school, she won many tennis medals, ribbons and trophies. She was the Proctor High School District Tennis Champion during her senior year and was voted most athletic woman her freshman year at Duluth Junior College. She attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Duluth and UMD, where she received bachelor’s, master’s and six-year specialist degrees in education. Edith was an elementary school teacher and reading specialist for the Title I program for the Duluth Public Schools for about 25 years. She was a member of Central Ave. United Methodist and Asbury United Methodist Churches and of the United Methodist Church Peace Circle. After retirement, she was assistant state coordinator and instructor for the 55-Alive safe driver educational program. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma educational sorority. She worked as a docent at Glensheen Mansion and volunteered at the Kid’s Closet of the Duluth Public Schools.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Maxine Dryden Klang Ona of Duluth.

She is survived by her husband of almost 65 years Wallace, daughter Darlene (Vance) Bushey of Duluth, son Wallace “Joe” (Mary) of Arden Hills, Minn., son Reverend Dean (Tami) Nosek of New Ulm, and brother Harlan Dryden of Calif., 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mildred Margaret (Smith) Reid
Carol (David) Prachar of Bayview is mourning the death of her mother, Mildred Margaret (Smith) Reid. The lifelong resident of Duluth passed away Mon., Oct. 11, 2004 in St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice. She was 76.

Mildred was born in Duluth. She graduated from Duluth Cathedral in 1945 and from St. Mary’s School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She retired from nursing at St. Mary’s Medical Center and Duluth Clinic West in 1990. On Nov. 24, 1951, Mildred married John “Jack” MacDonald Reid. Mildred was an avid curler and a member of the Duluth Curling Club.

She is also survived by her husband of 52 years Jack and her children John R. (Annette) and Mary (Robert) Martinson both of Duluth, six grandchildren, a great-grandson, her brother Gilbert (Virginia “Suzie”) Smith of Duluth, a step-brother and two step-sisters, a niece and a nephew.

Richard J. “Dick” Lind
Richard J. “Dick” Lind, 74, died Mon., Nov. 1, 2004 in his home.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1929 in a log home in Augusta, Wis., to William and Marjory (Quinliven) Lind. Dick was a graduate of Denfeld High School, where he participated in gymnastics. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. He married Delores Hegwood in 1950. He lived and farmed in Hermantown for most of his life and was employed as a carman for Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railway for 43 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of West Duluth American Legion Post No. 71 and a member of the John Deere tractor group that participated in the Lakehead Harvest Reunion. He was a strong supporter of the former Blood Donors, Inc., now Memorial Blood Center. Dick enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, camping, auctions and searching for John Deere tractor parts throughout the U.S.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Colleen “Cookie” Leader.

Survivors include Delores Lind, children Taire (Randy) Suliin of Duluth, Kevin (Lori) Lind of Mpls., Tracy (Mike) Lind-Jarvenpa and Lorri Lind, both of Duluth, sisters Billie Becotte and Bobbie Ostrum, both of Mont., grandchildren Tara (Bob) Zajac, Aaron and Patrick Jarvenpa and Rachel Lind-Engstrom, great-grandson Maddux Zajac, five nieces and nephews, cousins and many lifelong friends.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Joseph Michael Zmyslony
Jeanet Zmyslony of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Joseph Michael Zmyslony. He passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004 at his Duluth home surrounded by family. He was 82.

He was born in Duluth, the tenth child to Michael and Frances Zmyslony. Joseph attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic School, Cathedral, Lincoln and Denfeld High School. He served in World War II in the Chinese Burma Theater. After the war, he worked at the US Steel Plant, and then made a couple of trips sailing the Great Lakes until joining the post office as a letter carrier in 1947 retiring in 1979. He was a charter member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, a life member of the VFW Post 137, American Legion Post 71, National Assoc. of Letter Carriers and the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Joseph is preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and seven sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Antus); a son, two other daughters, a sister, and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their extended families, and also many friends.

Military Rights were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Gloria A. (Olson) Peterson
Carol (Rick) Forsberg of Proctor is saddened by the death of her sister, Gloria A. (Olson) Peterson. She was 54.

The former Duluth resident passed away Oct. 27, 2004 in White Bear Lake, Minn. She was born in Roseau, Minn. She graduated from St. Luke’s Nursing School. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and other handiwork.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lester. She is also survived by husband, Doug; a daughter; mother, Inez Olson of Duluth; another sister; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Services were held in White Bear Lake, Minn. Interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

John Taillon “Jack” McDonald, Sr.
John Taillon “Jack” McDonald, Sr. passed away Thurs., Nov. 4, 2004 in Ohio. He was 78.

Jack was a graduate of Proctor High School and the University of Minnesota. He missed the Hoghead Festival this year, but usually attended every year. He served his country in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during WW II and the Korean War. Later he worked in train service on the Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific Railway and as a labor organizer for the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Jack joined the Interstate Commerce Commission, which became the Federal Railroad Administration, where he served as District Chief for the State of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents Florence Taillon and Edward Leo McDonald of Proctor.

Survivors include his wife Ora Lee (nee Satterfield), children Patrick (Hilary) of Colo., Mary (Robert) Maurer of Vir., Philip (Christine) of Texas, Thomas (Lori) of Ohio, James (Debi) of Penn. and John Jr. (Kathie) of WV, nine grandchildren and his sister Yvonne (Bud) Pflugi of Woodbury, Minn.
