Gertrude Marie Huiras
Gertrude Marie Huiras, 93, of Columbia, passed away April 16, 2004, at South Hampton Place. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Dr., Columbia, Mo.
Mrs. Huiras was born June 1, 1910 in Leavenworth, to Arthur P. and Virginia VanKinder Zschetzsche. October 29, 1930, she married Sylvester J. Huiras in West Bend, Iowa and he preceded her in death, Nov. 18, 2002. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Survivors include three children, Patricia Tauer and Kathleen Huiras-Bruner, both of Columbia, Richard Huiras of Houston, Tex.; sister, Lucille Mangen of Hopkins; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Dr., Columbia, MO 65201.

Oliver Marti
Oliver Franklin Marti, 89, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Funeral services were held at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye, on Saturday, April 17, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Oliver was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Leavenworth Township, the son of Henry and Lucy (Alwin) Marti. He grew up in Home Township and attended District #30 Country School. Oliver married Verla Schultz on March 10, 1936, in Home Township and the couple lived and farmed on Verla's home farm. In 1944, Oliver purchased his first eight Registered Holstein cows and was in the Registered Holstein business until his retirement. Oliver was a charter member of the Brown County Holstein Association and the Brown County D.H.I. A., serving as a board member and president of both. He was on the State Holstein Board and was president for two years. Oliver was instrumental in the Brucellosis Eradication Program on the county level and helped start the ADA program. He served on the Brown County Fair Board many years. He was inducted into the MN Livestock Hall of Fame at the U of M. Oliver loved horses and had one of the last working teams in the area. He helped with some field work until he was 86 years old. Oliver also served on the District #30 School Board and the Stark-Sleepy Eye Creamery Board. He was an excellent carpenter and built and remodeled many homes and farm buildings. He was a lifetime member of and served as chairman of the building committee for Faith United Methodist Church and parsonage, as well as serving on the administrative board and as trustee for most of his adult life.
Survivors include, sons, Roger and wife Marsha Marti, James and wife Marcia Jo Marti and Floyd and wife Brenda Marti, all of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Shirley and husband Charles Cuykendall of Freeville, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Gladys Marti of Alexandria; and many nieces and nephews. Oliver was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verla; brothers, Vernon and wife Glayd and Eldon; sister, Dorothy and husband Carl Romberg; and brother-in-law, B. Darwin and wife Irene Schultz.

Nathan James Nachreiner
Nathan James Nachreiner, 21, New Ulm, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, on Monday, April 19, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were with the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Nathan "Nate" James Nachreiner was born Feb. 15, 1983, in New Ulm, the son of Lisa (Witt) Nachreiner and Jeffrey Christensen. He grew up in Sleepy Eye where he attended Sleepy Eye Public School and later attended River Bend Alternative School in New Ulm. After he completed his schooling, Nate worked at Coleman Power Mate in Springfield as a welder for a few years. He worked at Krysteel Manufacturing in Lake Crystal for a short time before returning to work at Coleman where he was presently employed. Nate loved to work on and fix cars, trucks and snowmobiles, his favorite was a 1980 Monte Carlo he was restoring. He enjoyed his two nephews, hanging out with his friends, Nascar racing and riding snowmobile.
Nate is survived by his mother and step-father, Lisa and Merle Bohlin of Sleepy Eye; father, Jeffrey Christensen of Springfield; brothers, Nicholas Nachreiner and fiance Ricki Goldschmidt of Sleepy Eye and Adam Braun of Sleepy Eye; maternal grandmother, Ramona Witt of Sleepy Eye; paternal grandmother, Nathalie Christensen of Springfield; special friend, Mandy Blank of New Ulm; step-grandparents, Leon and Betty Nachreiner of Sleepy Eye; nephews, Trevor and Trenton Nachreiner of Sleepy Eye; aunt, Madelyn and Jim Ronning of Bloomington; uncle, Doug Christensen of Springfield; godmother, Connie Dahlberg of Sleepy Eye; and many cousins. Nate is also survived by his many wonderful friends who were with him until his death. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Gilbert Witt; paternal grandfather, Kelly Marks; and aunt, Virginia Wilkerson.

LeRoy H. Neuman
LeRoy H. Neuman, 77, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at his home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Saturday, April 24, at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements. LeRoy Herbert Neuman was born Aug. 2, 1926, in Clear Lake, S.D., the son of Franklin and Johanna (Olson) Neuman. He graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis in 1944 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. LeRoy served as a Medical Corpsman in the base hospital in Long Beach, Calif. and was honorably discharged in 1946. On Sept. 11, 1946, LeRoy was united in marriage to Dorothy Raymond in Minneapolis. Following marriage LeRoy worked at Northwest Airlines as a radio electrical mechanic for 40 years, retiring in 1986. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and had attended the United Methodist Church since moving to Sleepy Eye in 2003. LeRoy enjoyed golfing, fishing, watching football and attending his grandchildren's events.
LeRoy is survived by wife, Dorothy of Sleepy Eye; sons, Stephen and wife Gail Neuman of Naples, Fla., David and wife LuAnn Neuman of Randolph and Robert and wife Angela Neuman of Cannon Falls; daughter, Marcia Jo and husband James Marti of Sleepy Eye; nine grandchildren; sister, LeNora Roundsley of Arden Hills; sister-in-law, June Neuman of Burnsville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Richard Lynn; brother, Lambert Neuman; and brother-in-law, Charles Roundsley.

Louise Schmitz
Louise M. Schmitz, 86, of Prairie Senior Cottages in New Ulm, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at New Ulm Medical Center. Funeral services were Monday, April 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm, handled the arrangements.
Louise Monica Fischer was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Bruckbauer) Fischer. She married Edward J. Schmitz on May 4, 1937, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage they farmed in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County until 1965, when they moved to New Ulm. She had worked for Kraft and later for 3M in New Ulm until she retired. Louise enjoyed playing cards, listening to old time music, embroidery, crocheting, gardening, canning and baking. She loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, the St. Mary's Catholic Aid Council, the Farm City Hub Club and many card clubs.
Louise is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Maryls and Roger Huss of Kinnelon, N.J. and Deanna and Ken Paa of New Ulm; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Bette Schmitz of Spicer; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Edwin Steffl of Clements; sisters and brothers-in-law, Veronica Simon of Willmar, Rosemary and Hilary Tauer of Windom, and Olivia and Howard Binder of Gibbon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Irene Fischer of Sleepy Eye, Arthur Fischer of Elrosa, Wilber and Theresa Fischer of St. James, Sylvester and Lavon Fischer of Lafayette, and Benjamin and Genny Fischer of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward Schmitz on Feb. 27, 2002; daughter, Janet Steffl on Dec. 14, 2003; brothers, Emil Fischer, Edwin Fischer; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Grace L. Volker
Grace L. Volker, 83, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Season's Hospice in Redwood Falls.Funeral services were held at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, on Wednesday, April 21, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com. The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Grace was born on June 7, 1920, in Mallard, Iowa, the daughter of Theo (Stowell) and Frank Schwint. She moved with her family to Sleepy Eye, where she grew up and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School. She married William Volker on June 10, 1939, in Iowa. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye. Grace worked as a clerk for the city of Sleepy Eye, as a clerk at the Palace Clothing Store and as secretary at Sleepy Eye Grain and Feed. Grace was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, donating blood, spending time with her grandchildren and especially having coffee with her friends.
Survivors include son, Paul and wife Jeanne Volker of Sleepy Eye; six grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Marge and husband Ivan Sandmann of Sleepy Eye and Fran Feig of Willmar; brother, Robert and wife Violet Schwint of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Esther Teschendorf of Fargo, Alice Christensen of Sleepy Eye, Rose Horton of Sleepy Eye and Florence Haas of Rochelle, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William in 2003; and sister, Hazel Ebelsisor.

Sister Remy Schaul
Sister Remy Schaul, 70, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester,who served as an educator, died on April 22, 2004, at Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago.
Born Rita Ann Schaul on Jan. 19, 1934, in Peotone, Ill., Sister Remy entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1951, from St. Juliana Parish, Chicago. She made profession of vows in 1954 and began her teaching ministry at St. Francis Parish in Rochester and taught there again from 1975-76. She also was principal in Sleepy Eye. From 1976 to the present, Sister Remy was missioned to St. Juliana Parish, Chicago, where she assumed duties as principal, resource teacher and parish minister. She would have celebrated her golden jubilee in June.
Sister Remy is survived by her Franciscan Community and by brothers: Eugene Schaul. of Shepherd, Mont. and Robert Schaul, of Highland Park, Ill.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, April 28, in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights.
Memorials are suggested to Sisters of St. Francis of Rochester, Office of Benefactor Relations, Assisi Heights, 100 14th St. NW, Rochester, MN 55901.
