Cleopha Weiss
Cleopha Margaret Weiss, 89, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Care Center. Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Friday, April 23, with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Cleopha was born April 9, 1915, in Bashaw Township, Brown County, the daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Kreitinger) Lang. She grew up and attend school in Comfrey. Cleopha married Roman Weiss on Oct. 20, 1936, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye until October of 1973, when they moved to Paynesville on Lake Koronis. Cleopha and Roman returned to Sleepy Eye in 1989. Roman died Dec. 11, 1998. Cleopha lived at Countryside Apartments for seven years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a past member of Divine Providence Auxiliary and the CCW. She loved flowers, gardening and fishing.
Cleopha is survived by her children and their spouses, Jerry and Marge Weiss of Sleepy Eye, Alice and Bill Rothfork of Melrose, Carol and Tom Vogl of Monticello and Bob and Rita Weiss of Sleepy Eye; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Leona Meidl of Divine Providence Home, Sleepy Eye and Margaret Zenk of Olivia; and sisters-in-law, Adeline Witt of Sleepy Eye and Olivia Hoffman of Sauk Village, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roman; four brothers and three sisters.

Vera Weyker
Vera Weyker, age 89, life long resident of Sleepy Eye and Morgan died on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sunday, April 18, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan with interment in the church cemetery. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Morgan handled the arrangements. Memorials preferred to the "We Care Program."
Vera was born in Eden Township, Brown County, on Oct. 20, 1914, the third daughter of Ted and Anna (Foster) Zellmer. She grew up on the family farm near Evan and attended District #51 Country School and Morgan High School. For several years she worked in Evan at Westergaards Grocery Store and also at the Evan Post Office. Vera was married to Norbert Weyker on Oct. 11, 1938, at St. Mary's Rectory in Sleepy Eye by Rev. Thomas Diehl. After marriage, they bought a farm in Brookville Township and farmed for 25 years. In 1969, they bought the old Van Russell place in Evan and started a used machinery business which they ran for approximately 17 years. In 1985, they retired and moved to Morgan. They enjoyed spending the winter months in Arizona. Vera continued to live in Morgan, until falling and breaking her hip, about a month ago. After, hip surgery, Vera underwent an emergency laparotomy. She passed away the morning of April 14 at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Vera was a long-time member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, C.C.W. and belonged to the Senior Citizen's Club. She was a former member of the Evan Wide Awake Club and the Town and Country Extension Club. Vera liked sewing, gardening, cooking and interior decorating. She loved cats, fed them and tried to find homes for them. She especially loved her pet cat, "Misty."
Vera is survived by her daughter, Claudia Weyker, of Sleepy Eye; many nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Jule Weyker of Stillwater and Irene Wenisch of Redwood Falls. She was preceded In death by her husband, Norbert in 1993; sisters, Merle Lapitz and Rachel Nelson; and brother, Francis Zellmer.

Marla (Menk) Bender
Marla Jean (Menk) Bender, 36, died April 22, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. The family will receive relatives and friends at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, April 29, from 6 to 8 p.m, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Services will be held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 30. Clergy will be Rev. Timothy Grams. Interment will be in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent at www.sturmfh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice or to a trust fund for the Bender children. Trust fund address is Cherry, Bakaert and Holland, 222 Central Park Ave., Suite 1400, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Please reference Bender Children Trust. Casket bearers are Kyle Bender, Verlyn Hahn, Jeff Rue, Dan Reddemann and Darwin Johnson.
Marla was born Nov. 24, 1967, in New Ulm, to Charles and Delores (Reddemann) Menk. She grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated with honors at Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1986. Marla attended Gustavus Adolphus College at St. Peter and earned an accounting degree in 1990. On Oct. 26, 1991, she was united in marriage to Kevin Bender at Zion Lutheran Church, Morgan and moved to Virginia the following year. Marla and her family were residents of Virginia Beach, Virginia for the past 12 years. She was a certified public accountant with Cherry, Bakaert and Holland in Virginia Beach. Marla was an avid flutist throughout high school and college and continued to play at church services in Virginia Beach.
Maria is survived by her husband, Kevin and three children, Jonathan (11), Sarah (8), and Hannah (4); parents, Charles and Delores Menk of Sleepy Eye; brother, David Menk of Minneapolis; father and mother-in-law, Keith and Kay Bender of Rockaway Beach, Mo.; sisters and brother-in-law, Kelly and Verlyn Hahn of Sioux Falls, S.D., Karen and Jeff Rue of Racine, Wis. and Kyle Bender of Sioux Falls, S.D.; several nieces and nephews; and many more relatives and friends.

Lena Tessmer
Lena Tessmer, 98, Bloomington, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Presbyterian Health Care Center in Bloomington. Funeral services were Saturday, April 24, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Lena was born June 13, 1905, in Sleepy Eye, to Ernest and Anna (Muske) Hoppe. Lena was married May 17, 1922, to Henry Tessmer. They farmed on the Tessmer Homestead until the fall of 1946, when they moved to a small farm west of Sleepy Eye. Lena and Henry moved into town in the early 1970s. Henry passed away in 1975. Lena moved to Ross Park Apartments in the Spring of 1977, where she lived until moving to Minneapolis in June of 1999. She lived in an independent living facility for one year. At that time she needed more care so a nursing home was where she resided until her time of death. Lena had a fall on April 17, resulting in a serious head injury.
Lena is survived by her children, Lucille Clements of Panama City, Fla. and Gloria Fearing of Rosemount; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Ann Bertrand of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; son, Donald Tessmer; brother, Albert Hoppe; and sisters, Lydia Walden and Erna Madsen.

Rose M. Battig
Rose M. Battig, 97, Longmont, Colo. and formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at the Life Care Center in Longmont, Colo. Funeral services were Monday, March 1 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Memorials may be sent to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1217 W. 17th Ave., Longmont, CO 80501.
Rose was born May 1, 1906, in Morgan Township, Redwood County, to Fred and Mary (Daluge) Hasse. She married Fred W. Battig on June 20, 1923, in New Ulm. Rose spent most of her life in the Sleepy Eye vicinity until 1978, when she moved to Longmont to be near her daughter and family. Over the years, Rose was employed at several different jobs in Sleepy Eye. She loved children and did volunteer work in her church's Lutheran school lunch program in Sleepy Eye. Rose enjoyed her family and family gatherings. She also enjoyed boating, fishing and traveling. Rose was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Longmont and was a past member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.
Rose is survived by her son, Marvin Battig of Youngtown, Ariz.; daughter, Muriel and husband Harold Current of Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren, Barbara Battig, Mark Battig, Merry Andreas, Sandra DiNatale and Jeanie Vela; great-grandchildren, Paul, Katie, Daniel, Sam, Timothy, Johanna and Elizabeth Battig, Matthew and Justin DiNatale and Ryan, Racheal and Emily Vela. She was preceded in death by her husband; and brothers and sisters, Martin, Ewald, Helmet, Arthur, Gerhard, Harry, Herbert, Benny, Arnold, Irene, Eleanor, Edna and Freda.

Avis Isaackson
Avis Virginia Hagen Isaackson, 79, Cottonwood, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at her home. Funeral services were Monday, March 1 at Christ Lutheran Church in Cottonwood, with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were with Kulow Funeral Service of Echo.
Avis Virginia Hagen Isaackson was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Cottonwood, to Belvin and Ida (Berg) Hagen. She was baptized and confirmed at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. After graduating from Hanley Falls High School, she attended Concordia College, Moorhead, for one year. She was employed at Anderson Insurance Office in Cottonwood.
Avis was united in marriage to James W. Isaackson on Nov. 25, 1945. This union was blessed with three children: Mary, Gregory and Clinton. Jim and Avis farmed north of Cottonwood until 1983 and then retired to their home on Cottonwood Lake. Avis was a devoted wife and homemaker, loving mother and passionate grandmother. She served her Lord through many church activities and led bible study at West Prairie Apartments. Many will remember her as a gracious hostess at coffee parties, family gatherings and church functions. She was diligent in attending her children and grandchildren's events including sports, church and school programs and recitals. Wintering in Arizona, quilting, sewing, cooking, gardening, sending greeting cards and reading were her special interests.
She is survived by her husband James W. Isaackson of Cottonwood; daughter Mary (Brian) Mulry of Sleepy Eye, and their children Reggie, Angie and Isak Rasmus; Erin and Tim Mulry, and Charity (John) Anderson; grandchildren, Brendan, Quinn, Aidan, Noah and Mariely; also survived by son Greg (Anne) of Cottonwood and their children Adam and Emmy and son Clint (Melissa) of Cottonwood and their children, Tony, Tyler and Alyssa, Greg, Jamie, Jeremy and Janelle; sister, Maxine (Lowell) Hegg of Edina; brother, Harland (Rachel) Hagen of Granite Falls and several nieces and nephews. Avis was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Jamey Paul Rasmus.
Casket bearers were Tony Isaackson, Greg Quesada, Tyler Isaackson, Adam Isaackson, Alyssa Isaackson, Emmy Isaackson, Reggie Rasmus, Isak Rasmus and Angela Rasmus.

Joan Ann (Ganske) Jensen
Joan Ann (Ganske) Jensen, 71, Springfield, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Springfield Medical Center. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn, with interment in Sanborn City Cemetery. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home. Joan Ann was born Aug. 7, 1932 in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of John and Ann (Kachelmeier) Ganske. She grew up in Sleepy Eye, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1950. Joan married Kenneth Jensen on Aug. 30, 1952, in Oceanside, Calif. The couple made their home in rural Sanborn, where they farmed and raised their family. In 1991, Joan went to work as a cashier at Jackpot Junction, where she was a "mother" to many of her co-workers and friends. She helped raise her grandchildren and loved to take care of her family. Joan was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church of Sanborn, the Christian Mothers and the CCW. She was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, cooking, knitting, golfing, gambling, vacations and baking chocolate chip cookies. Joan really enjoyed entertaining her family and especially loved all her grandchildren from Seb, age 29, on down to Melanie, 9 months.
Joan is survived by her husband, Kenneth of Springfield; children, Kenny Jr. and wife Jean Jensen of Wanda, Kevin and wife Riki Jensen of Lakeville, Kurt and wife Pamela Jensen of Lamberton, Mary and husband Myron Vogt Sanborn, Marcy and husband Rick) Heid of St. Cloud, Kriss Jensen (Shana Jackson) of Marshall and Maureen Janssen of St. Cloud; 26 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Lyle and wife Myrna Ganske of Brea, Calif., Tom and wife Karen Ganske of Sleepy Eye; and Jim and wife Maxine Ganske of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Mary Jane Koessler of New Ulm, Maureen and husband Pete DeRosier of Burlington, Wisc., and Collette Van De Bogart of Elkhorn, Wisc.; and brother-in-law, Albert Flor of New Richland. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lois Flor and Mildred Linnehan; brothers-in-law, James Van De Bogart, Jim Koessler and Bernie Linnehan.
