Mathew Louis Turbes
Mathew Louis Turbes, 98, Springfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Gil Mor Manor in Morgan. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. Feb. 28, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Mathew was born Oct. 25, 1905, in Brookville Township, the son of Hubert and Mary (Grausam) Turbes. He attended country school in Brookville Township. On Oct. 26, 1932, Mathew married Eleanor Lang in Springfield. Mathew was a long-time resident of the Springfield area. The couple farmed in Stately Township for 40 years and later moved into Springfield in 1973. In 1994, They moved to Lake Villa Maria Apartments in Sleepy Eye and April of 2003, moved to Gil Mor Manor in Morgan. Mathew was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield, the Catholic Order of Foresters and a past member of the Springfield Senior Citizens. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and visiting with people. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family of which they have many fond memories.
Mathew is survived by his wife, Eleanor S. Turbes of Gil Mor Manor, Morgan; daughter, Angela and husband Leander Rosenhammer of Mankato; son, Glen and wife Kathy Turbes of Willmar; grandchildren, Cheryl and husband Fritz Bredenbeck of Edina, Brian Rosenhammer and fiance Kathy White of Richfield and Deb and husband Joe Jensen of Elk River; brothers, Sylvester and wife Myrtle Turbes of Sleepy Eye; Victor and wife Doris Turbes of Maple Plain and James and wife Cyrilla Turbes of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Gladys Lang of Springfield, Mary Turbes of Sleepy Eye and Annabelle Turbes of Redwood Falls; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo Turbes, Edward Turbes, Florian Turbes, George Turbes and Raymond Turbes; and sister, Loretta Wenisch.

Gretchen Luise (Kuske) Nell
Gretchen Luise (Kuske) Nell, 86, Tucson, Ariz., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at her home.
Gretchen is survived by her husband, Corwin C. Nielsen of Tucson; daughters, Judith Emerson of St. Paul and Patricia Nell of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter Sarah and husband Geo Edwards and great-grandson, George Edwards of Minneapolis; and sister, Shirlie (Kuske) Dreher of Bloomington, Ind.

Oliver Anderson
Oliver Anderson, 89, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, March 5 with interment at Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Oliver was born April 25, 1914, in Westbrook. He was the oldest son of Oscar and Edith (Sager) Anderson. He was baptized Lutheran at Westbrook and confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Wausa, Neb. He went to high school two years in Wausa and two years in Fulda, which completed his formal education. In his youth he worked on the farm and then in sales with Aerial Photography, covering the entire Midwest. He organized his own company in 1953, at Arnold's Park, Iowa. After 12 years, he moved to California and worked in Pest Control for 11 years until he was forced to go on disability at age 58 due to a bad back. He moved to Blackwell, Okla. in 1976. He then moved to Sleepy Eye in the Spring of 1985, where he joined Trinity Lutheran Church. Here he found a true home with Christian friends and love. He grew in his faith and became active in volunteer and support work. He was instrumental in organizing a New Beginnings Group for widowed and divorced persons in New Ulm and Fairmont. He was very active in Beginning Experience for several years. He was a team member of the Lay Renewal Ministries and spoke in a number of churches around Minnesota and Ellsworth, Wis. Later he joined the Senior Companion Program administered with Lutheran Social Services visiting shut-ins and lonely in the surrounding area. He received Letters of Commendation from Governors Perpich and Carlson.
Oliver is survived by his son, Don and wife Sandy Anderson of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Debbie and husband Rocky Wright of Lakeville, brothers, Milford of Westbrook and Vernon of Le Sueur; sister, Leone Arfsten of Annandale, 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and special friend, Trudy Schroeder of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Vincent.

Sister Audrey Zenner
Sister Audrey Zenner, 90, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes of Rochester, who served as an educator died on March 5,2004, at Saint Mary's, Hospital in Rochester.
Born Lucille Cecilia Zenner on Jan. 1, 1914, in Caledonia, Sister Audrey entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1931, from St. John the Baptist Parish in Caledonia. She made profession of vows in 1934 and began her teaching ministry at St. Joseph Parish, Winona. She taught in various schools in Minnesota including Adrian, Currie, Sleepy Eye, Austin, Jackson, Lake City and from 1969-76, at Tau Center in Winona. From 1976-86, Sister Audrey was director of the curriculum library at the College of St. Teresa. She retired to Assisi Heights in 1986 and celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1994.
Sister Audrey is survived by her Franciscan Community. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, March 10 at 11 o'clock in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, with Msgr. Donald P. Schmitz officiating.

Dorothy Marie Moldan
Dorothy Marie Moldan, 75, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Father John Richter, Father Robert Wyffels and Father George Schmit officiated the funeral service. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye or New Ulm Area Catholic Schools.
Dorothy Marie was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Mankato, the daughter of Peter and Cecilia (Renne) Depuydt. On Oct. 4, 1955, she married Florian Moldan at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in St. Clair. The couple lived and farmed in Stark Township in rural Sleepy Eye. Dorothy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Christian Mother's, CCW, Catholic Aid Association, DAV Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed her family and spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, old time music, sewing, cooking, baking and bird watching.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Florian Moldan of Sleepy Eye; children, Mike F. and wife Carol Moldan of Sleepy Eye, LaVonne and husband Scott Hogen of New Ulm, Wanda and husband Bill Ubl of New Ulm, Charlie Moldan and special friend Vicky Weiss of Sleepy Eye and Nettie and husband Brian Portner of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; sister, Joan (Dodie) and husband Joe Moldan of Hanska; brother-in-law, Billy Moldan of New Ulm; sisters-in-law, Mary Depuydt of North Mankato and Helen Depuydt of St.Clair. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Doug; brothers, John, Gervase, Clem and Leonard; sisters-in-law, Lucille Depuydt, Mary Woratschka and Phyllis Moldan; brothers-in-law, Edwin Moldan and Valerian Woratschka.

Leo A. Brand
Leo Brand, 92, Lecanto, Fla. and formerly of Faribault, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at the Lifecare Center of Citrus County in Lecanto, Fla. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 27, 10:30 a.m., at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, at Immaculate Conception, in Faribault, with interment in Current Cemetery, Home Township, west of New Ulm on Saturday, March 27 at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault on Friday, March 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Parish prayers will be recited on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Faribault Sports, Inc., Bethlehem Academy or the Current Cemetery Association.
Leo Alexander Brand, the son of Anton and Emma (Ranweiler) Brand, was born July 22, 1911, in rural New Ulm. He was united in marriage to Ottie M. Current on July 8, 1935, at Holy Trinity Church in New Ulm. Mrs. Brand preceded him in death on Nov. 29, 1990. Leo later married Vera Hannagan in Dunnellon, Fla. on June 15, 1991.
The youngest of 10 children, Leo tended horses on a road building crew in his teens, worked for A.J. Pietrus from 1935 to 1943, then operated a dry cleaning business in Sleepy Eye with his brother Ted and owned and operated a bowling alley/cafe in St. James from 1946 to 1956. In 1956, Leo moved to Faribault, where he worked for State Bond & Mortgage Co. as a salesman until his retirement. He was active in amateur baseball in Sleepy Eye, St. James and Faribault serving in every capacity. He was elected to the Minnesota State Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990 and Faribault Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. He was an active fund-raiser for I.C. Church, Faribault Catholic Schools, Faribault Lakers Baseball and the Knights of Columbus Council 889 in Faribault, where he also served as Grand Knight in 1962. Leo also chaired the State Amateur Baseball Tournament held in Faribault in 1978.
Leo is survived by his present wife, Vera of Dunnellon, Fla.; sons, Bernie and wife Dona Brand of San Antonio, Tex., Steve and wife Maureen Brand and John and wife Lola Brand, both of Faribault and Ben and wife Carol Brand of Plantation, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; stepson, Bill and wife Debbie Hannagan of Dunnellon, Fla. and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death his parents; wife, Ottie; brothers, Edward Brand, Harry Brand, Benedict Brand, Theodore Brand and Joseph Brand; sisters, Margaret Brunner, Regina Beckett, Angela Brand and Leona Kuelbs.

James Ganske
James A. "Jim" Ganske, 73, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at his home. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Saturday, March 20. Following the service, his body was laid to rest at the church Cemetery, where it will await the glorious day of the Resurrection. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Jim was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Home Township, north of Sleepy Eye, to John and Ann (Kachelmeier) Ganske. He attended rural school, St. Mary's High School and took real estate courses at Mankato State College. Jim served in the United States Army as a tank commander stationed in Korea from February 1952 until November 1953. Upon returning, he was married to Audrey Jean Fischer from 1954 to 1993. Jim was founder and owner of Ganske Trucking and spent many years as a real estate broker with Berkner Agency, Sleepy Eye and Thief River Falls, Great Northwest Agency in Thief River Falls and Great North Agency in Detroit Lakes. Jim worked as a lake reclamation and dredging project manager and consultant on projects in Sleepy Eye, St. James, Fairmont and Hanska and at Emmetsburg, Penora and Storm Lake, Iowa, dating back to 1964 and continuing until his death. Jim's involvement with Sleepy Eye Lake extended from 1964 through the present and brought great benefits to the lake and community. Jim was united in marriage to Maxine Paula Salisbury March 3, 2001 in Kasson and they resided together until his death. Jim was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, Life member of the American Legion Post No. 7, the VFW Post No. 100, the Korean 140th Tank Battalion Retirees, Life Member of the Knights of Columbus and past president of the Sleepy Eye Jaycees. Jim enjoyed fishing, traveling, cooking, geology, astronomy and spending time with his grandchildren and family. Jim lost his battle with cancer and died at home surrounded by loved ones.
Jim is survived by his wife, Maxine of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Sheryl and husband Fred Bahr of Madison, Wis.; sons, James M. Ganske of Hawaii, Gerald S. Ganske of Hawaii and Donn R. Ganske of Sartell; stepchildren, Lisa and husband Greg Mitchell of Richardson, Tex. and Steven and wife Leah Salisbury of Badger, Iowa; grandchildren, Jeremy (Kirby) Ganske, Tami Ganske, Sam Ganske, Shane Bahr and Haley Reed; step-grandchildren, Stephanie Salisbury, Jacob Salisbury, Joshua Mitchell and Katlyn Mitchell; brothers, Lyle and wife Myrna Ganske of Brea, Calif. and Tom and wife Karen Ganske of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Mary Jane Koessler of New Ulm, Maureen and husband Pete De Rosier of Burlington, Wis. and Colette Van De Bogert of Elkhorn, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann Ganske; sisters, Lois Flor, Mildred Linnihan and Joan Jensen; and infant children, Ronald Ganske and John Ganske.
May the Lord comfort all who mourn his passing.
