Ethelbert Mathiowetz
Ethelbert Mathiowetz, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Thursday, March 18, with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were with the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Ethelbert John Mathiowetz was born March 6, 1919, in Mulligan Township, the son of Bartl and Theresa (Reminger) Mathiowetz. He attended country school in Dist. # 63 in Mulligan Township and Comfrey Public School. After school, Bert helped his father on the family farm. He entered the U.S. Army and served in WW II. He left with the 1st round draft from Brown County and served with the Armored Division as a Corporal in Europe. Bert was awarded the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medals. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 26, 1945 and returned home to farm with his brother Art. On Nov. 22, 1968, Bert married Agnes Schlief at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Bert worked for Woodrich Construction and retired at the age of 65. Bert was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Springfield Legion and VFW. He enjoyed attending family gatherings and watching sports, especially the Twins and Vikings.
Bert is survived by his wife, Agnes Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye; brother, Tony Mathiowetz of Minneapolis; and sister, Marie Cook of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond, Ambrose, Wendelin, Alfred, Joseph, Leo, Leonard, Art and his twin brother, Harrybert in infancy; and sister, Theresa Nachreiner.

Sister Laureen Korth
Sister Laureen Korth, 81, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes of Rochester, who served as an educator, died Jan. 28, 2004, at Assisi Heights. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights. Memorials are suggested to Sisters of St. Francis of Rochester, Office of Benefactor Relations, Assisi Heights, 1001 14th St. NW, Rochester, MN 55901.
Born Florence Mary Korth on July 10, 1922, in Sleepy Eye, Sister Laureen entered the Franciscan Congregation from Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Mankato. She made profession of vows in 1942, and began her teaching ministry at St. Mary's Parish, Portsmouth, Ohio. She taught in various schools in Minnesota, including Sleepy Eye, Rose Creek, Winona, Minneapolis, Wilmont and Delano and also in Portsmouth, Ohio from 1972-80. From 1980-95, Sister Laureen was missioned to Charleston, S.C., where she was on the staff of Neighborhood and Echo Houses, working through Catholic Charities for the poor. She retired to Assisi Heights in 1995, and celebrated her diamond jubilee in 2002.
Sister Laureen is survived by her Franciscan Community; brothers, Frances Korth and James Korth, both of Mankato.

Gloria Schwerzler
Gloria Jean Schwerzler, 72, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Care Center. Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 31, at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye. Gloria was born Sept. 18, 1931, in Clements, the daughter of Archie and Lillian (Meierding) Jensen. She grew up and attended school in Morgan. She attended Morgan Public School for six years and later attended Sleepy Eye Public School, where she graduated. After graduation, Gloria worked in the food business at cafes and nursing homes. She was a long-standing member of Faith United Methodist Church, where she served on the administrative board, Methodist Women and many committees. Gloria loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and special friend, Delores. She enjoyed going to craft shows, eating out, reading and watching football.
Gloria is survived by her children, Cheryl Bock of Las Vegas, Nev., Nadine and David Dale of Dawson, Lenny and Arvilla Walters of Peculiar, Mo., Rick and Mindi Schwerzler of Sleepy Eye and Leigh Reiner of Groton, S.D.; grandchildren, Liberty Bock of Las Vegas, Nikkie Howie of Las Vegas, Jaime, Stacy and Lindsey Dale of Dawson; and Brandie Rikkie and Krissie Reiner of Groton, S.D.; great-granddaughters, Taylor and Alexis Howie of Las Vegas; brother, Doug and wife Kay Jensen of Redwood Falls; and nieces, Lynn, Lori and Lacy. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents; a brother in infancy; and two grandsons.

John "Jackie" F. Sellner
John "Jackie" F. Sellner, Jr. 68, died at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004.
Jackie was born Nov. 19, 1935. Formerly of Sleepy Eye, he lived in Minneapolis the past 25 years, where he held a variety of jobs as a laborer. Jackie enjoyed visiting with his friends and neighbors. Prior to his health problems, he enjoyed many hours of fishing and canoeing on Lake Nokomis. Jackie was a participant in the University of Minnesota Medical School Bequest Program and as such, a private interment will be held at a later date at the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Jackie is survived by his sisters, Judy and husband Charles Fearn of Minneapolis, Doreen LaGare of Redwood Falls, and Irene Seifert of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Robert Sellner of New Ulm, Alvin Sellner, Marvin Sellner and Roger Sellner, all of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John, Sr. and Minnie (Heller) Sellner; brother, Jerome; and infant siblings, Darlene and James.

Erna Balbach
Erna Balbach, 83, died Feb. 3, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 7, at Springfield United Methodist Church, with Pastor Elaine Foote-Blue officiating the ceremony. Interment is in Springfield Cemetery. Anderson-Schmidt-Lacanne Funeral Service handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Masonic Cancer Fund.
Erna was born March 9, 1920, to Ed and Emma (Kettner) Schenk, who farmed five miles north of Springfield in North Star Township, Brown County. She attended District 48 School in North Star Township and later Springfield Public School. On June 17, 1942, Erna was united in marriage with Percy Balbach at United Methodist Church in Springfield. They lived all of their married life on a farm five miles south of town. Farm life suited the couple well as they tended crops and animals for over 50 years. Erna was Percy's "right hand man" and they helped others as well in times of need. Erna enjoyed being among people. Health issues eventually forced the decision for the Balbachs to move to an apartment in Springfield. Erna loved her job at the Sleepy Eye Hospital, where she worked for over 10 years until being diagnosed with cancer. Percy passed away on April 2, 2002. After his death, Erna continued to live in her apartment in Springfield until her health declined and she became a resident of St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield on Nov. 26, 2003. Erna was an active member of the Springfield United Methodist Church in various capacities and served as a Sunday School teacher and a term as president of the Women's Society. Erna was also a member of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. She willingly held officer positions and was a district instructor for 16 years. In 1942, she was elected Worthy Grand Matron of the State of Minnesota and in 1985, had the honor of serving as General Grand Chapter for EASTARL (Eastern Star Award for Religious Leadership).
Erna is survived by her sisters, Esther and husband Ben Gieseke of Springfield and Delores and husband Bob Sater of St. Louis Park; brothers, Walter Schenk of Springfield and Armin and wife Clara Schenk of Butterfield; brothers-in-law, Ward and wife Melvine Balbach of Mankato and Lynn and wife Bernice Balbach of Springfield; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Percy Balbach; mother- and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Balbach; and sisters-in-law, Elaine and Dorothy Schenk.
Casket bearers and honor guards are nephews and nieces of Percy and Erna and each had a special part in the lives of their uncle and aunt. They are John Schenk, Roger Steinke, Dean Schenk, Mark Schenk, Jim Balbach, Dennis Riewe, Sue Davison, Mavis Schenk, Diane Riewe, Sally Hendrickson, Brenda Schenk, Dawn Schenk, Lisa Sater and Jean Kitzmann.

Ruth E. Dormady
Ruth Esther Dormady, 98, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 6, at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home. Ruth was born Aug. 10, 1905, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of William and Ida (Voigtschild) Kuester. She grew up and attended school in Sleepy Eye and worked at the Depot baking pies at a young age. Ruth was united in marriage with Floyd Dormady on Nov. 29, 1926, in Omaha, Neb. and they returned to Sleepy Eye in 1928. Ruth assisted Floyd in his plumbing and heating business and worked at home, where she was an avid cook and excellent ketchup maker. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was devoted to her Catholic faith, reciting the rosary on a daily basis. Ruth enjoyed cooking, raising African Violets, eating and especially enjoyed her stay at Divine Providence Home.
Ruth is survived by her son, Tom Dormady of Morgan; daughters, Kathleen Schewe of New Ulm and Dorothy Hudson of Chesapeake, Va.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Donald Dormady, James Dormady and Dennis Dormady in infancy; sons-in-law, Earl Hudson and Jerald Schewe; brothers, Alfred Kuester and Delbert Kuester; and sisters, Elsie Harms and Myrtle Berkner.

Mildred E. Fiebiger
Mildred E. Fiebiger, 82, formerly of Sleepy Eye, Fox Valley area and Oshkosh, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Bethel Home in Oshkosh. Visitation is Friday, Feb. 13, 1 to 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Fond Du Lac and Monday, Feb. 16, noon to 2 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services are Friday, Feb. 13, 3 p.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Fond Du Lac and Monday, Feb. 16, 2 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Pastor David Haugly will officiate at both funeral services. Burial will follow at Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Church and School, Trinity Lutheran Church and School or Faith Lutheran Church and School. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye.
Mildred was born in Brown County on Feb. 22, 1921, the daughter of Henry and Dehlia Vollmer Meinert. On April 8, 1942, she married Philip J. Fiebiger at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Philip preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1983. Mildred was a life long member of St. John's Lutheran Church. While residing in Wisconsin, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran, Neenah and Faith Lutheran Church, Fond du Lac. She enjoyed her family, gardening, cooking and sewing and was a member of the Ladies Aid at St. John's Lutheran Church.
Mildred is survived by her daughters, Arleen (Jim) Groth and Neenah and Sharon (Dan) Kemnitz, Eldorado; son-in-law, Mark (Joan) Aronson, Town of Greenville; grandchildren, David Groth, Wendy (Ken) Bixby, Aron (Jenny) Groth, Nicole Kemnitz, Kari (Jason) Oakland, Joshua Kemnitz, Andrew Aronson, Erica and Jessica Reineck; great-grandson, Jonah Bixby; brother, Lloyd (Erna) Meinert, New Ulm; sister, Melva (Leonard) Koch, Lamberton; sisters-in-law, Violet Meinert, Springfield and Hildegard Meinert of Morgan.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Dianne Aronson; grandchild, John Philip; and brothers, Delbert Meinert and Raymond Meinert.
