Lorena B. "Bernice" Larri Mitchell
Lorena B. "Bernice" Larri Mitchell, 72, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Stanton Health Center in Stanton, Nebr. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Shultz-Vogel-Johnson Mortuary of Stanton handled the arrangements.
Bernice was born June 17, 1931, in Bellevue, Nebr., the daughter of Frank and Catherine Bernice (Drury) Pfeffer. She graduated in 1931, from Omaha South High School in Omaha, Nebr. She worked as an accounting clerk in the Traffic and Criminal Division of Douglas County Courthouse in Omaha until retiring in 1995. She moved to Sleepy Eye in the fall of 1995.
Bernice is survived by her twin daughters, Lauri and husband Steve Conner of Norfolk, Nebr. and Lynne Mitchell and fianceĢ Brian Landreville of New Ulm; granddaughters, Caley and Abby Conner of Norfolk, and Bailey, Brooklyn and Brynne Landreville of New Ulm; and special friends, Mary and Donna Konz and Della Schieffert, all of Sleepy Eye.

Robert "Whitey" Berdan
Robert "Whitey" Berdan, 58, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. A memorial service was held Dec. 18 at the Werness Brothers Funeral Chapel, 2300 W Old Shakopee Road, in Bloomington, with interment in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Whitey was born Oct. 22, 1945, in Minneapolis. He was raised in Sleepy Eye and graduated from St. Mary's High School. Whitey lived in Sleepy Eye with his wife and children until 1984, after which they moved to the Brainerd Lakes area. While in Brainerd, Whitey was a long-time employee of Montgomery Wards. He served in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967, and he received five medals for service and achievement.
Whitey is survived by his wife of 33 years, Donna; daughters, Shelly Friederich of Bloomington and Jennifer Berdan of Richfield; step-son, Jim Redmond of St. Peter; step-daughter, Vickie Ridgley of Ramsey; brother, Pat Berdan of Burnsville; and nine grandchildren. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle heart.

Jason W. Meyer
Jason W. Meyer, 33, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center after a six-year battle with cancer. Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 13, at Calvary Baptist Church, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements. Jason was born Jan. 9, 1970, in Hennepin County, the son of Monis and Mary (Rathman) Meyer. He grew up in St. James and later in Sleepy Eye. Jason attended and graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1988. He attended college in Mankato and worked part-time before his marriage to Karitauna Myrlie on Jan. 26, 1995, in Mankato. Jason worked at Fergen Metals in Eagle Lake before returning to Sleepy Eye and working for Christensen Farms until his health forced him to quit. Jason enjoyed sports of all types, both participating in and coaching, especially football and wrestling.
Jason is survived by his mother, Mary Meyer of Sleepy Eye; father, Monis and wife Linda Meyer of Morgan; children, Abigale and Ian "Willie" Meyer of Mankato; grandmother, Stella Rathman of Sleepy Eye; sister, Tracee and husband Francis Fromm of Sleepy Eye; nephews, Alan, Daniel and Zachary Fromm and aunts and uncles. He is also survived by his birth parents and their families. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Donald Edward Schmid
Donald "Don" Edward Schmid, Sr., 88, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Donald was born Oct. 22, 1915, in Tracy, the son of Edward "Mike" and Josephine (Welch) Schmid. he graduated from Tracy High School in 1933, and attended the University of St. John's in Collegeville. Don was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Hentges on June 17, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Don served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, the couple moved to Sleepy Eye, where Don served as president of the State Bank of Sleepy Eye, now known as Americana Community Bank, until his retirement in 1983. Don was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. He served as past commander of the Benjamin A. Remmele American Legion Post #7 and as past president of the Sleepy Eye Golf Club. Don enjoyed golf, bowling, hunting, fishing, music, dancing, traveling and spending winters at Lake Havasu, Ariz. He especially enjoyed his Irish heritage.
Don is survived by his wife, Betty of Sleepy Eye; sons, Donald "Toby" and wife Gwen Schmid of Sleepy Eye, and Michael and wife Karen Schmid of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Joanne and husband Rollin Seip of Pickerington, Ohio, and Gloria and husband Michael Peluso of New Brighton; niece, Bette Jo Gervais; and nephew, Donny Eller. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Dorothy O'Brien.

Angeline "Angie" M. Sturm
Angeline "Angie" M. Sturm, 95, Springfield, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Springfield Medical Center. Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 24, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield. Angie was born Nov. 18, 1908, in Albin Township, Brown County, the daughter of Anton and Theresa (Prokosch) Schroepfer. She attended St. Mary's School, moving with her parents into Sleepy Eye in 1931. Angie helped out at various homes. On Sept. 5, 1933, she married William Michael Sturm at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple moved to a farm in Mulligan Township, where they farmed and lived until moving into Springfield in 1983. Angie was formerly a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a current member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church. She was also a member of St. Anne's C.C.W., St. Monica Court C.O.S., a card club, the North Star Extension Club, was a former 4-H leader, in baking bread, for 10 years, a member of the Springfield Senior Citizens and enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, quilting, crocheting, playing cards, baking, farming, dancing and being with her family.
Angie is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Marilyn and Edwin J. Windschitl of Springfield, Mary Ann and Kenneth Arnoldi of Lamberton, Annette and Edwin Treml of Sleepy Eye, Phyllis and Ignatius Hoffman of Sleepy Eye and Judy Arnoldi of Springfield; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and sister, Frieda Haas of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William in 1988; son, Michael in 1971; and infant son in 1938; grandchildren, Terry Treml, Kevin Hoffman and Michelle Arnoldi; great-grandchild, Jake Windschitl; sisters, Martha Windschitl and Louise Zwaschka; and brothers, Norbert Schroepfer; Anthony "Tony" Schroepfer and Leo Schroepfer.

Ethel Utecht
Ethel Utecht, 93, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. Arrangements are pending with Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye.

Loretta Wenisch
Loretta, Mrs. Ted Wenisch, 89, Springfield, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 23, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield. Loretta was born Sept. 28, 1914, in Brookville Township, the daughter of Hubert and Mary (Grausam) Turbes. On May 21, 1935, Loretta married Theodore Wenisch at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. The couple lived and farmed in Brookville Township until Ted's death in 1977. Loretta moved into Springfield in 1981, and to Lake Villa Maria Apartments in Sleepy Eye in 1999. She was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, St. Anne's C.C.W., the Alter Society and St. Monica's Court. Loretta enjoyed flowers, gardening and crafting for her children and grandchildren.
Loretta is survived by her children, Kenneth and wife Kathy Wenisch of Springfield, Norbert and wife Patricia Wenisch of Searles, Lois and husband Lee Birdsong of Meadowlakes, Tex., Gerald and wife Georgann Wenisch of Plymouth, Lynn and wife Bev Wenisch of Henderson and Jean and husband Dale Domeier of Sleepy Eye; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers, Matt and wife Eleanor Turbes of Morgan, Sylvester and wife Myrtle Turbes of Sleepy Eye, Victor and wife Doris Turbes of Maple Plain and James and wife Cyrilla Turbes of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Mary Turbes of Springfield, Annabelle Turbes of Redwood Falls and Kate Wenisch of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted in 1977; brothers, Leo Turbes, Edward Turbes, Raymond Turbes, Florian Turbes and George Turbes; grandson, Brian Wenisch; and great-grandson, Patrick Wenisch.
