Audrey Maxine (Vigliaturo) Ives
A memorial service will be held today for Audrey Maxine (Vigliaturo) Ives of Proctor. She died Sat., Nov. 20, 2004 at her home. She was 73.

Audrey was born March 23, 1931 to Howard and Helen Ester Soeby. She waitressed for many years at Pickwick, Wabegon and Olson’s. She was a member of the Moose Lodge, Proctor VFW and Proctor Bowling and Dart Leagues.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Gordon Vigliaturo, sister Margerie (Miles) Williams, and brothers Herbert “Bud” and Henry “Hank” Soeby.

She is survived by her husband Russell, sons Daniel (Gail Martin) Vigliaturo, Darrell Vigliaturo and David (Laura) Vigliaturo, all of Esko, daughters Jill (Bryan) Hustad of Ill., Denise (Dexter) Swanstrom of Cromwell, Diane (Jerry) Selin of Esko and Delaine (Gene) Putney of Barnum, two daughters-in-law, 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The service will begin at 2 p.m. today (Wed., Nov. 24) at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 Grand Ave. in Duluth. Family will greet friends at a reception following the service at Rascal’s in Proctor.

Janis Swedberg
Janis Swedberg, of Almac Dr. Proctor, passed away Oct. 18, 2004 in St. Luke’s Hospice. She was 66.

Janis, formerly of Rockford, Ill., was born Dec. 9, 1937 at home, in rural White County, Ill., to William and Mabel Bayley. She graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1957, with a degree in Education. Janis enjoyed cooking for her family and was an excellent pianist. She showed great care and commitment toward her family and all her friends. Janis was preceded in death by her parents.

Jan is survived by her loving husband, of 43 years, Rod; and her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Holly, all of Duluth; her sister, Mary (Glendell) Gill, of Tyler, Texas; step-grandsons, Mike and Dan Rich.

Ruby Becker Ziells
Joel (Gayle) Ziells of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Ruby Becker Ziells. The Cloquet resident died Wed., Nov. 17, 2004 in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home, where she had been since Sept. She was 90.

She was born in Tipton, Iowa. Ruby married William Ziells in 1937. Ruby had worked for Chun King in Duluth for several years. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church near Munger.

She was preceded in death by her husband William, one sister and three brothers.

Ruby is also survived by her daughters Lorraine (Marvin) LePage of Scanlon and Joan (Tom) Goodreau of Brooklyn Park, sons Gerald (Kathy) of Wrenshall, Jim (Linda) of Cloquet, Eugene (Darleen) of Wis. and Jerome (Cathy) of Esko, a sister Dorothy Helmricks of Deer Creek, Minn., a sister-in-law Lucy Brasel of Perham, 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Hope Lutheran Church. Interment in Solway Cemetery.

Donald L. Reed Hoiem
Services were held last week for Donald L. Reed Hoiem, who grew up in Saginaw and attended Proctor High School, where he was on the swim team. He died in Missouri on Nov. 14, 2004. He was 51.

Donald was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Oct. 9, 1953. He grew up in Saginaw. He went to and was confirmed in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig. He also served in the U.S. Army for approximately eight years in the 1970’s. He was an over the road truck driver. His hobbies and interests were Harley Davidson motorcycles and Tae Kwan Do. He married Debra Boutelle of Rochester, Minn., in Feb. of 1975 and later divorced in 1979. He later married Nancy Nelms of Grand Marais, Minn. in 1982 and later divorced in 1986.

Donald is preceded in death by his father, Andrew Hoiem, Jr.; and grandparents, Andrew and Andrine Hoiem and Seymour and Emma Rood.

Donald is survived by his mother, Phyllis Hoiem of Saginaw, Minn.; son, Andrew Hoiem III of Rochester, Minn.; daughter, Amy Hoiem of St. Charles, Minn.; brother, Kenneth Hoiem of Rush City, Minn.; sister, Dawn (Eugene) Russell of Saginaw, Minn.; along with four nieces; and two nephews.

Aggie Bjorklund
Friends and family gathered at the Fond Du Lac Tribal Center recently to remember Aggie Bjorklund. The former Twig resident died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004. She was 82.

She was born on March 22, 1922, the daughter of Ben and Julia Loons. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; four sisters; and three brothers.

She is survived by one daughter, Julia (Gary) Bolander of Columbia Heights, Minn.; one stepson, Garry (Rhonda) Bjorklund of Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister, Lucy Ann Dewing of Sawyer, Minn.; one brother, Richard Loons of Cloquet, Minn.; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Alexander John Bopp
Services were held last Saturday for Alexander John Bopp of Proctor. He was 23.

He was born on Feb. 17, 1981 to Dr. David and Pat Bopp in Duluth. He graduated from Proctor High School in 1999 and attended Lake Superior College. He joined the Minnesota Air National Guard 148th where he worked in the Communication Flight. Alex was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church where he was an altar boy. He played varsity basketball at Proctor, was a member of the Duluth Curling Club where he was on two club championship teams, 1997 and 2004. He was active in the Proctor Softball League, playing for Mr. D’s. When Alex was in junior high, he started drum lessons and that continued thru Basic Training.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John R. and Catherine V. Tyndall; paternal grandparents, Leonard G. and Mary F. Bopp; his uncle, Jonathan F. Bopp.

He is survived by his parents, Dr. David L. and Pat Bopp of Proctor; twin brother, Ben of Proctor; his brother, Gavin (Jill) Bopp of Duluth; his sister, Francene (Peter) Buerke of Duluth; his fiancé, Janelle Cannon of Duluth; his aunt and uncle, Joe and Connie Bopp and their children, Nathan and Mary; nieces and nephew, Tricia and Erin Buerke and Ethan Bopp; all his extended family at the 148th ANG.

A Funeral Mass was held Saturday in St. Rose Catholic Church. Rev Fr James Bissonette officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery with military honors.

Donald M. “Don” Kivisto
Yesterday, Wed., Dec. 1, honors were accorded by the Duluth Fire Honor Guard and military honors by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard for Donald M. “Don” Kivisto, 72, of Bear Island Road. He died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1932 in Cloquet to Nels John and Hilda (Polo) Kivisto. He grew up in Esko and was a graduate of Esko High School, where he participated in football and basketball. Don was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a City of Duluth firefighter for 37 years, retiring in 1996 as an assistant chief. Don was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church, International Association of Firefighters and the Duluth Retired Firefighters Assn., Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and in high school, Future Farmers of America. He married Barbara (Kucinski ) Johnson on July 20, 1984. Don loved the outdoors, especially hunting pheasants and ducks and fishing in the Boundary Waters and the Canadian Quetico.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Duane.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; former wife, Mary MacFarlane Kivisto of Duluth; children, Kathy (Bob) Silverness of Caribou Lake, Kevin (Diane) Kivisto of Superior, Annabelle (Mike) Odberg of Superior, Jeremy (Dawn) Johnson of Great Falls, Montana, Jeffrey Johnson of Duluth and his former wife, Laura of Duluth, and Rebecca (Adam) Reno of Duluth; grandchildren, Anders and Ina-Marie Silverness, Erika and Bryn Odberg and Michelle, Michaela and Marissa Johnson; sisters, Audrey Van Wave of Esko and Janet (Jerry) Van Wave of Cromwell; special aunt, Shirley (Earl) Rish of Esko; nieces, nephews and cousins.

George W. Vanneste
George W. Vanneste, 78, Proctor born and lifelong resident, passed away peacefully at home Dec. 7, 2004.

George was born August 13, 1926, in Proctor to Maurice and Elsie Vanneste. He was a graduate of Denfeld High School. George went into the U.S. Navy and served during WWII, aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lexington. On May 13, 1950 George married Audrey Bourgoyne. He worked as a butcher at Vanneste’s Grocery Store for several years before joining Gerber Products as a salesman, retiring in 1987. After retiring he worked part time for General Mills. George was a member of V.F.W. Post #137, Proctor American Legion, and served 33 years with the Proctor Fire Dept., seven years as Fire Chief. He was extremely family orientated and had a great sense of humor. George will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

George was preceded in death by his wife in 1980; his parents; two grandsons, Brian & Ryan.

He is survived by his children, Kathy (Ray) Rotter of Hermantown, Dan (Jodi) Vanneste of Proctor, Gary (Debbie) Vanneste of Proctor, Dave (Charine) Vanneste of Tenn., and Patti (Porter) Porterfield of Proctor; ten grandchildren, Scott, Lisa, Tracy, Mike, Allison, Nick, C.J., Davine, Tara, and Jen; four great-grandchildren, Mathew, Nate, Justin, and Ben; a brother Bob (Blanche) Vanneste of Proctor; and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services were held Monday, Dec. 13, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor. Burial in Oneota Cemetery, Duluth.

Charles O. ‘Chuck’ Johnson
Charles O. ‘Chuck’ Johnson, of Esko, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1955, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a heroic battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asbestosis. He was 66.

He was born Jan. 2, 1938 in Duluth to Charles and Alice (Kampa) Johnson. Chuck proudly volunteered for the U.S. Air Force and worked as a mechanic on B-36 and B-52 aircraft. He was a member of the VFW and the Foreign Legion. Chuck worked for Moline Machinery for many years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and collecting old cars, especially Cadillacs. Chuck, along with his sons, developed his land and built his home. He truly loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Chuck is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Betty Lou Weiss, Dorothy LaTraille, Gerry Johnson and Elaine Johnson; and niece, Cheryl Weiss.

He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 26 years, Bonnie; daughters, Alice (Jeff) Johnson and Tami (Brad) Haley; sons, Charlie, Jr., Calvin (Kelly), Christopher (Katy) and Shane (Melanie); daughters, Shirliana Webb and Sharon Bauer; 20 grandchildren,; mother-in-law, Joyce F. Moline; brothers, John (Alice) and Kenneth; sisters, Louise (Curtis) Carlson, Kathy Nelson; several brothers and sisters-in-law; special sister-in-law, Cheryl (Charlie) Rouse; devoted friend, Art Rudnicki; close friend, Darwin Bishop, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Military rites were accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.

Marion Lois Peplinski
Marion Lois Peplinski, who was a Proctor high school graduate, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was 82.

She was born in Duluth on Dec. 8, 1922 to Ignatius Joseph and Marian (Parchem) Peplinski. Lois was a graduate of Duluth Business University. She worked as a beautician for 13 years, and retired from U. S. Steel, Duluth Works, in 1976 after 19 years of service. Lois was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Ray in 1975, and James in 1992; her sisters Arlene in 1994, and Lorrayne in 1995. Survivors include her brother Thomas Peplinski of Mesa, Ariz.; her sister Betty Hukka of Pontiac, Mich.; her sister-in-law Trudy Peplinski of Duluth, and ten nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday at St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor with Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiating. Memorials to St. Rose Catholic Church would be appreciated. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Dorothy Kinnunen
Services were held Monday for Dorothy Kinnunen. She passed away Dec. 10, 2004 at her Duluth residence at the age of 76.

She was born in Proctor, Minn. on Dec. 18, 1927 to John and Beatrice Engebritson. Dorothy was a talented violinist playing in the Duluth Symphony as a young woman, a gifted seamstress and quilter, a gourmet cook, and a registered nurse. She possessed an unusual sense of adventure. Dorothy traveled the world including China, Australia, the Far East, and multiple trips to Europe. She volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital and belonged to St. Benedict’s Church.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband William A. Kinnunen; her parents; her stepfather Samual Brown; and one brother Douglas J. Engebritson.

Dorothy is survived by her children Kristine (Larry) Saverslak, Jane Kinnunen, Nancy (Michael) Kinnunen-Maxim, Mary Beth (Brandon) Curto, William (Nadya) Kinnunen, Susan (Gary) Soya; 18 grandchildren; four and a half great-grandchildren.
