Bernard Lange
Bernard Arthur Lange, 97, Fairmont, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at Fairmont Medical Center. Funeral Services were held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, on Saturday, April 8, with interment in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, New Ulm. The clergy was Pastor Timothy Grams. Bernard was born July 2, 1908, to William and Hannah (Wandersee) Lange at the family homestead in Home Township. He was baptized Aug. 16, 1908, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye by Rev. August E. Zich; his sponsors were William and Minnie Timm. Bernard completed the eighth grade at rural Sleepy Eye School District #22. He was confirmed in Essig at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church on June 3, 1923, in the German language. After graduating from Sleepy Eye High School in 1930, he attended Minneapolis Business College for one year, majoring in junior accounting (April 22, 1931). Bernard lived in Dubuque, Iowa for a time and worked for Oscar Friton of rural Sleepy Eye before starting farming on his own in October of 1934, and harvested his first crop in 1935. On Jan. 22, 1936, Bernard was united in marriage to Adeline Anna Orth at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Parsonage in New Ulm. This union was blessed with two daughters, Shirleyann and Sandra. In 1941, he purchased the 160-acre family farm from his father. He retired in 1985, after 50 years. In 1994, the couple moved into Sleepy Eye. In September of 2005, Bernard became a resident at Lakeview Health Care Center in Fairmont to be closer to his daughter. He was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. He enjoyed latchhooking rugs, old time music and spending time with his grandchildren.
Bernard is survived by his wife Adeline of 70 years; daughter, Shirleyann and husband Bob Talle of Blue Earth; grandchildren, Michelle (Mark) Graham of Mankato, Erica (Robert) Nowak of Burnsville, Trent (Rebecca) Talle of Eagle Lake, and Jennifer Gregg and Amy Gregg, both of Chaska; great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Alyssa Graham and Logan Talle; sisters, Toots Rono of Sleepy Eye, Sade Ladd of Benson and Arlene Seifert of Sleepy Eye; and son-in-law, Randy Gregg of Chaska. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandra; brother, Jake; and sisters, Helen, Freida and Edna.

Daniel “Dan” Mecklenburg
Daniel “Dan” Mecklenburg, 84, New Ulm, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at his home. Funeral Services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at United Church of Christ, New Ulm, with Pastor Hank Campbell officiating. Burial was in New Ulm City Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm, handled the arrangements.
Daniel Arthur Mecklenburg, son of Alex and Gertrude (Meyer) Mecklenburg, was born Dec. 16, 1921, in New Ulm. He graduated from New Ulm High School with the class of 1939. Dan was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army for four years during WWII and played in the army band. On May 22, 1946, Daniel was united in marriage to Betty Geisler in New Ulm. They spent their life farming in Milford Township, Brown County, farming until 1986, when they retired and move off the farm and in to New Ulm. Dan was an excellent musician and played the saxaphone with various old-tyme bands around the New Ulm area. Dan, along with wife, Betty, formed the musical group called “Melodeer's,” a dance band, playing for many years throughout Minnesota and Arizona. Dan was a member of the United Church of Christ in New Ulm, where he and Betty sang as a duet for many funerals. He loved to spend time with his family, and loved to fish, camp, and watch the Minnesota Twins baseball games. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Parkinsons Association, the United Church of Christ, or to the donors choice.
Dan is survived by his wife, Betty, of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynne and Jerry Flatau of New Ulm and Shari and Kevin Schroeder of St. Clair; son and daughter-in-law, Monte and Karen Mecklenburg of St. Paul; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Elmo Aspelund of Madelia; and nephews, Jim, Jerry and Jeff Geisler and Dean Aspelund. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Aspelund; brother, Gilbert Mecklenburg; and niece, Lois Aspelund.

P. Peter Henning
P. Peter Henning, 97, Stewartville, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Stewartville Care Center, where he resided for two weeks. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring at Stewartville United Methodist Church, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Stewartville. Griffin-Gray Funeral Home, Stewartville, handled the arrangements.
Mr. Henning was born July 18, 1908, in Wabasso. He married Dorothy Case Feb. 2, 1953, in Rapid City, S.D. He grew up on the family farm in Wabasso, graduated from Wabasso High School and attended Business College in Redwood Falls. Henning served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his discharge, he served as a bank examiner from 1946 to 1952. He then moved to Rochester and worked at the former Olmsted County Bank and Trust Company. He later purchased the First National Bank in Stewartville. Henning retired in 1983, as board chairman and director. He moved to Tavares, Fla. and returned to Stewartville in 2003. He also lived in Sleepy Eye from 2001 to 2003. He was a member of Stewartville United Methodist Church and was active in civic affairs. He had been active in banking for over 58 years. He was a charter member of the Stewartville Care Center Board, Stewartville Lions Club, past president of the Stewartville Cemetery Association and a member of Stewartville Industrial Corporation.
He is survived by his son, Mervin D. Henning of Maitland, Fla.; and daughter, Deanna Henning Christian of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Lester M. Johnson
Lester M. Johnson, 76, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at his home. Funeral services were held Monday, April 17, 2 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Prairieville Cemetery, rural Sleepy Eye. The clergy was Pastor Keith R. Ainsley. Lester was born Nov. 24,1929, in Prairieville Township, Brown County, the son of Rudolph and Sarah Marie (Hanson) Johnson. He grew up in Prairieville Township, attending District #29 Country School. Lester farmed on the family farm his entire life. He married Marian Wunsch on June 10, 1967, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home on the farm until the present time. Lester was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. He enjoyed farming, fishing and playing cards. Lester especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Marian Johnson of Sleepy Eye; children, Lee (Judy) Johnson, Julie (Lane) Bode and Joleen (Craig) Dittbenner all of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katelyn, Ashley and Isaac Johnson, Brandon, Tyler and Camden Bode and Courtney and Britney Dittbenner; sister, Eleanor Buche of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Violet Johnson of Glencoe, Karen Wunsch of Paynesville and Rita (Dewey) Gaylord of Fairfax; and brother-in-law, Jerry (Marie) Wunsch of Sleepy Eye. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Marvin Julius Lendt
Marvin Julius Lendt, 100, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, Thursday, April 20, from 4 to 8 p.m., and at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, on Friday, April 21, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service. The clergy will be Rev. Bruce J. Naumann and interment will be in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via marvinlendt@sturmfh.com.
Marvin was born April 15, 1906, in Stark Township, Brown County, the son of Fred C. and Minnie (Vollmer) Lendt. He grew up in Stark Township and attended District #11 Country School in Iberia and later attended St. John's School in Sleepy Eye. Marvin married Erna Engholm on Sept. 8, 1931, at St. John's Parsonage in Sleepy Eye. The couple lived and farmed on Marvin's home farm in Stark Township for many years. After retiring they moved to Sleepy Eye in 1979. They later moved to Countryside Apartments in 1999. Erna preceded him in death in 2004, and Marvin later moved to the Sleepy Eye Care Center. Marvin was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, playing cards, reading and helping his sons on the farm.
Marvin is survived by his sons, Armin (Leona) Lendt of Sleepy Eye and Melvin (Lois) Lendt of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Ricky (Bernie) Lendt, Randy (Joyce) Lendt, David (Pam) Lendt, Linda Werner (special friend Bob Reynolds) and Laurie (Tom) Scherer; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Erna; and brothers, Fred (Alice) Lendt and Arthur (Leona) Lendt.

Julia Ganske
Julia M. Ganske, 98, St. James, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Home, St. James. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 18, 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the parish cemetery. The clergy was Father Brian Oestreich. Julia Margaret was born Feb. 25, 1908, in Fairfax, the daughter of John and Theresia (Goblirsch) Schneider. She grew up and attended St. Andrew's School in Fairfax. Julia married Leonard J. Ganske on Sept. 14, 1929, in Carrington, N.D. The couple made their home near Sleepy Eye in Home Township where they lived and farmed for many years. Julia was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a 50-year member of the Catholic Aid Association. She enjoyed collecting angels, sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking, growing flowers and praying the rosary daily. She especially enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Floyd (Emmy) of Mendota Heights, Cleo (Brad) Schmidt of St. James, and Kenneth (Jean) of Shakopee; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Julia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1990; four sisters and three brothers.

Harold J. Fischer
Harold J. Fischer, 67, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 19, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the parish cemetery. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Father Brian Oestreich officiated. Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, handled the arrangements. Harold was born Sept. 1, 1938, in Sleepy Eye, to Alfred A. “Fritz” and Rose (Rothmeier) Fischer. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye in 1955, and married Mickey Windschitl on June 14, 1960, at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. Harold worked his entire life farming in Albin Township, except when he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye. Harold was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he served as usher. He was a member of American Legion Post #7 serving as past Commander and he was the current Second Vice Commander of American Legion District #2. He was past Commander and a current Trustee of the Brown County Veterans Council. Harold was a member of VFW Post #800 in Sleepy Eye. He served in the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard and was a member of the Sleepy Eye Eagles Club #3428, the Sleepy Eye Sportsman's Club, Toastmasters and the Polka Angels. He was previously a member of the Brown County Holstein Association, a 4-H adult leader and coached girls' softball at Stark Township. Harold enjoyed being outdoors, farming, hunting, playing cards and especially watching his grandsons play baseball.
Harold is survived by his children, Steve (Elaine) Fischer of Sleepy Eye, Lisa Fischer of Plymouth, Martha (Chad) Witte of Eagle Lake, Anna Geiger of New Ulm and Andrew (Christine) Fischer of Madison Lake; grandchildren, Keith, Craig, Joseph, Jacob, Savanna, Anthony, Ellen, Julia and Addison; sisters and brothers, Agnes (Harold) Zwaschka of Comfrey, Phyllis Nelson of Tujunga, Calif., Donald Fischer of Austin, Tex., Alfred A. Fischer, Jr. of Lakeville and Dennis (Gail) Fischer of Webster, S.D. He was preceded in death by his parents.
