Lois Mae Hom
Craig (Lana) Hom is mourning the death of his mother, Lois Mae Hom of Duluth who passed away Sun., Dec. 12, 2004 in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. She was a lifelong Duluth resident and very proud of her West Duluth roots. She was 79.

She was born in Duluth on January 12, 1925 to Edwin and Ethel (Smith) Ramstad.

Lois graduated from Denfeld High School in 1942 and then attended Duluth State Teacher’s College. She married her high school sweetheart, David Hom on Nov. 29, 1946. During World War II she worked for General Mills and the J. C. Penney Company. She was a homemaker for many years raising her family on Park Point and spending summers at the family cabin on Pike Lake. When her children were older, she went to work at the Famous Clothing Company. She enjoyed living on Park Point and being on the beach with her children and grandchildren. A favorite hobby was knitting for her family, with many of her famous “Hom family” fisherman knit sweaters made in sizes toddler 2 to men’s 3X. She also knit hundreds of pairs of mittens over the years, donating the to the Kids’ Closet at her alma mater, Laura MacArthur Elementary School. Lois was an avid UMD Bulldog hockey fan and enjoyed many years of travel with the Blue Line Club and the Cloquet Connection.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Dorothy.

Survivors also include her husband of 58 years, Dave of Primrose Retirement Community, two other sons, David and Bob (Peggy) of Duluth, a daughter, Wendy (Craig) Kaija of Washington; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

At Lois’ request, there will be no service.

Gordon E. Lindquist
Gordon E. Lindquist, 79, of Alborn, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 in his home.

He was born Nov. 21, 1925 in Meadowlands to Peter and Olga (Erickson) Lindquist. He graduated from Toivola-Meadowlands High School. He served in the US Army during World War II. Gordon worked for the D.M.&I.R. Railroad for many years and retired as a locomotive engineer, and was also a Farmers Insurance agent in Cloquet for many years.

Enzie L. Lindquist, 81, also of Alborn, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth as a result of a brain aneurysm. She was born Aug. 29, 1923 in Moose Lake to DeForrest and Julia (O’Shea) Gooler. Enzie graduated from Central High School in Duluth. She enjoyed her life as a housewife. Gordon and Enzie were united in marriage on Oct. 27, 1948 in Duluth.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Morris. Enzie was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jane Tomberg; and two brothers, Howard and Albert ‘Chris’ Gooler. Both are preceded by one daughter, Judy LaVoie.

He was survived for a short period of time by his wife Enzie; they had four sons, Thomas (Marcie) of Duluth, Joseph of Calif., Charles of Wash., and Gordy A. (Bonnie) of Alborn; two daughters, Vickey (Joe) Litchfield of Alaska, and Patti Bryan of Ill. Gordon has seven sisters, Margaret Felknor of Duluth, June Colombe of Proctor, Doris Huffman of Duluth, Lois (Alden) Holmes of Warba, Betty (Leonard) Rauvola of Floodwood, Bernice (Jim) Adamski of Duluth, and Inez Buxton of Floodwood.

Enzie is survived by her brothers, Pat Gooler of Wis., Forrest ‘Bud’ (Patti) Gooler of Mankato, and Kenneth Gooler of Calif.; two sisters, Glenn D’Antoni of Colo., and Gladys Keene of Calif. Together they have numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Betty Eloise Lundberg
A memorial service was held Dec. 11 for Betty Eloise Lundberg, who lived in Adolph for 40 years. She died Wed., Dec. 8, 2004 at Mercy Health Care Center in Moose Lake. She was 79.

Betty was born in Stephenson, Minn. to Merle and Elvis (Peggy) Fairbanks. She married Herbert Lundberg in 1944 in Adolph. She enjoyed playing board games, collecting antiques and dancing.

Betty is survived by her husband Herb of Moose Lake, sons Larry of Idaho and Brian (Peggy) of Moose Lake, daughters Susan of Ariz., Kim (Scott) Thudin of Cromwell and Missy (Lonnie) Seipel of Wis., nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.

Clarence William Overby
Gary (Jeanine) Cogswell of Proctor is mourning the death of this father Clarence William Overby. He passed away Dec. 14, 2004 at his Duluth home. He was 81.

He was born in Duluth. Clarence served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He worked at U.S. Steel for 30 years and worked for the School District for 11 years. Clarence was a member of West Duluth Moose 1478, Norton Park Friendship Club, Norton Park Men’s Club, and was a long-time serving member of Norton Park Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sharon Childs; sister, Doris Wanhala; and special aunt, Elizabeth Rancourt.

Clarence is also survived by his wife, Mae; children, Bill (Luann) Overby of Stillwater, Lyle (Karla) Cogswell of Dumfries, Virg., Linda Nyman of Duluth, Sharen (Alan) Bergren of Duluth; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Allan (Shirley) Overby of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday. Military honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Private family burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Park.

Patricia L. Jernberg
Services were held Monday for Patricia L. Jernberg, of Proctor. She died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. She was 64.

She was born in International Falls, to Eldon and Marjorie (Brown) Waldbillig. She graduated from International Fall High School. Pat worked as a manager for the Oregon State Game and Wildlife Commission. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet and also the Catholic Foresters. She was also a volunteer for Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth as well as Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Pat was preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her mother, Marjorie Waldbillig of Duluth; one brother, David Waldbillig of Proctor; and three nephews, Andy, Nick and Aaron Waldbillig.

A mass of Christian burial was held in Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery near Loman, Minn.

Donald W. Burns, Sr.
Donald W. Burns, Sr., who graduated from Proctor High School in 1949, died Sun., Dec. 19, 2004, in his Pengilly home at the age of 73.

He was born in Keewatin and had been a resident of Pengilly since the 1950s. Donald and Helen Popovich were married in 1955 in Marble. He had been an electrician for M.A. Hanna and National Steel, retiring in 1988. He was a life member of the Marinoff-Miskovich VFW Post 8831 of Pengilly, served as President and Treasurer of the VFW Post gambling board, was a member of the Pengilly Boosters Club, was past Region 13B state baseball commissioner, served as an umpire for the Minnesota State High School League, an ASA umpire, coached grade-school basketball and football, Pengilly youth summer baseball and amateur hardball teams. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served in Korea and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and a twin brother.

Survivors include his wife Helen, three daughters, a son, seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, a great-grandson and a step-great-granddaughter, two sisters and a sister-in-law.

Amy G. Jacobson
Services will held today for Amy G. Jacobson, 22, of Pike Lake and St. Paul. She passed away on Sun., Dec. 26, 2004, as a result of a vehicle accident on Highway 61.

She was born on June 24, 1982 in Duluth to Darrell and Barb (Kilby) Jacobson. She graduated from Proctor High School in 2000, where she was on the Danceline and was one of the organizers for Peer Tutoring. She was Homecoming Queen for Proctor High School in 2000, competed at the Minnesota State level, won first place and competed at the National level in California. Amy earned her B.S. Degree in Family Social Sciences from the University of Minnesota and was currently working on her Master’s in teaching. She was also student teaching at the White Bear Lake Middle School and worked with Adults with Disabilities in Minneapolis. Amy was a very sweet, caring, energetic person, who loved her family and friends and found pleasure in everything.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Nels and Gail Jacobson; maternal grandfather, William Kilby; her aunt Debbie Kilby Arfsten.

She is survived by her parents, Darrell and Barbara; three sisters, Kristi (Jim) Olzeske and Laurie (Doug) Carlos both of Andover, Minn., and Sarah (John) Marchand of Proctor; maternal grandmother, Shirley Erickson of Duluth; nieces and nephews, Corin, Maddie, Max, Ian and Grace; her fiancé and best friend, Nik Watkins, whom she was to marry on July 23, 2005; her future in-laws, Bruce and Geri Watkins; Chris, Kadee, Mathew and Mackenzie; Catherine and Joshua; and Alyssa, who loved her very much, Amy and Nik’s kittens, Benjamin and Ranger; and many dear friends, including Stef and Sandra.

Visitation will be from noon until the 1 p.m. service today, Thursday in the Hermantown Community Church, 4880 Maple Grove Road, Rev. Linda Lundgren officiating.

Anna Opack
Helen Haugland is mourning the death of her mother Anna Opack. The West Duluth resident died on Tuesday evening, Dec. 21, 2004 in the Viewcrest Health Center at the age of 92.

Anna was born in Yugoslavia and had lived in Duluth for most of her lifetime. She was a seamstress, a homemaker. Anna was a member of the former Good Shepherd Catholic Church, St. James Catholic Church and the Legion of Mary.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; son, James; two brothers; two sisters; and her son-in-law, Bill Nelson.

Survivors also include five sons, seven other daughters, a brother, three sisters, 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held earlier in the week.

Lawrence B. “Larry” Stauber
Lawrence B. “Larry” Stauber, 83, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005 at his home in Grand Lake Township.

He was born on July 27, 1921 in Duluth to Anthony and Ellen (Landgren) Stauber. He was a long time Bayview resident. Larry was a graduate of Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II throughout the Pacific and ended his active military career with the occupation of Japan. He served as a Ranger with the 81st Wildcat Infantry Division and was awarded a bronze star. Following the war, Larry spent over 25 years in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of major. He was a past commander of the 477th Ambulance Company. He was employed as a blacksmith for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 16 years and then served as a Duluth Police Officer for 26 years, retiring in 1984 as sergeant.

Larry was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor, where he served for many years as the greeter, Euclid Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Duluth, West Duluth American Legion Post, West Duluth VFW Post, Disabled American Veterans, and West Duluth Moose. He was past president of the Duluth Police Credit Union and Duluth Police/Firefighters Retirees. Larry was active as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years. He married Marilyn (Froelich) on Jan. 11, 1991 in Duluth. Larry enjoyed hunting at “Stew Mulligans” hunting shack with his brothers Del and Tony, where he bagged a deer this past season, and the many fishing trips with his sons and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Barbara L. (Downs) Stauber and sister, Marguerite Snedker.

Survivors include his wife and companion of 14 years, Marilyn; sons, Larry (Cindy), Keith (Kinnan) and Ben (Bethany); step-sons, Ken (Julie Carlson) Atkinson and Jim (Sherry) Atkinson; brothers, Edward (Katie), Anthony (Marge), Delano (Jean) and Ronald (Shirley); sisters, Lorrain Kari and Elizabeth Samec; grandchildren, Leah, Erin, Nate, Madeline and Myra Stauber; and step-grandchildren, David, John, Jennifer, Kurtis and Scott Atkinson.

Visitation is from 10 until the 11 a.m. service today (Thurs.) in Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor, Rev. Paul Ingelin officiating.

Burial will be in Oneota cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. If so desired, memorial contributions may be directed to Forbes United Methodist Church, Boy Scouts of America or the Scottish Rite Clinic for language disorders.

Raymond Mike Horvath
Services were held last week for Raymond Mike Horvath. He died Fri., Dec. 24, 2004 at his Twig home. He was 76.

He was born Jan 31, 1928 in Elmer, Minn. He graduated from Toivola High School in 1945. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his duty on a destroyer from 1946-1948. He then attended Auto Body and Trade school and learned a trade skill which was always useful to him. He then joined the Ironworkers Union Local No. 563 in 1954 and worked for 36 years until his retirement in 1990. His favorite pastime and lifelong passion was working on and maintaining the family farm, where he was born, as well as working on countless auto body and shop projects. He married Johanna “Ann” Hofman in Feb. of 1955. They lived on the Horvath family homestead, until building a house in Twig and moving there in 1992.

Ray was preceded in death by his 9 year old son Robert, his parents, sisters Mary, Rose and Helen and brothers John and Jim.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years Ann, daughters Lori Horvath and Carol (Bruce) Barnett, both of Fairbanks, Alaska and sons John (Kelli) of Hibbing and Rex of Fort Collins, Colo., mother-in-law Nellie Hofman of Hibbing, grandchildren Elizabeth, Vince, and Holly Barnett and Nicholas Horvath, his sisters Frances Wayne and Katherine Edstrom, brothers Steve and Carl and many special nieces and nephews.
