Maynard M. Nelson, 76, of rural New Ulm, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at the St. John's Lutheran Home in Springfield from complications of Alzheimer's.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004 at the United Church of Christ in New Ulm with the Reverend Hank Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and then will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Saturday.
Maynard is survived by his wife, Kay Nelson, of rural New Ulm; daughters, Natalie Green and her husband, Greg, of Lakeville, Shelley Nelson of St. Paul; sons, Curtis Nelson and his wife, Cathy Glick, of Forest Lake, Reid Nelson and his wife, Lily McCabe of Window Rock, Arizona; a stepson, Drew Larson and his wife, Teresa of Springfield; three grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Marlys Bartholomew and her husband, Chuck, of Rochester; a brother, La Verne Nelson and his wife, Lola, of Harrison, Arkansas, and by his mother-in-law, Madelyn Rasmusson of New Ulm.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Magnus and Marie Nelson, and by his first wife, Anita Nelson, on January 19, 1990.
Maynard Melvin Nelson, the son of Magnus and Marie (Paukert) Nelson was born on August 8, 1928 in Blooming Prairie. He graduated from the Blooming Prairie High School. He then attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Wildlife Biology. On January 12,1952, Maynard was united in marriage to Anita Myhrvold in Marshall. After her death he married Kay (Rasmusson) Larson on March 23, 1991, in Springfield. In January of 1952 Maynard started his career with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) working as a Wildlife Biologist in Madelia. In 1966 he was promoted to the Game Research Supervisor in St. Paul and in 1973 he became the Regional Administrator for Region #4 based out of New Ulm. Maynard was in charge of establishing and building the Regional DNR Headquarters in New Ulm. After 32 years of service with the DNR, Maynard retired in 1984. In 1970 Maynard started planting Christmas trees at his farm in Forest Lake adding to his business in 1984 by starting a Christmas Tree Farm at his home in rural New Ulm in 1984, naming it the "Nelson's Christmas Tree Farm." This he operated until 1997. During this time Maynard was known throughout the community as the "Christmas Tree Man." He was a member of the United Church of Christ and was active in numerous civic and wildlife organizations. Maynard was a loving, hardworking person and one that had a great sense of humor.

Amy Renner, 90, formerly of New Ulm, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm awaiting arrival of family from out of state.

Jerry L. Schoof, 68, of 1314 N. German St., in New Ulm, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his sister, Lucille Riederer of Sleepy Eye; brothers, John Schoof of Essig and Howard Schoof of Sleepy Eye.
Jerry Lester Schoof was born Jan. 14, 1936, in New Ulm to Benjamin and Norma (Iesh) Schoof.

Earl Schroeder, 85, of Evan, formerly of New Ulm, died Saturday, October 30, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in St. Cloud.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Donald Sutton officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations will follow in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and 7 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Earl Stanley Schroeder, the son of Walter and Ida (Harmening) Schroeder, was born July 18, 1919 near New Ulm where he spent his youth and attended country school. He enlisted in the United States Army January 6, 1941, serving in Battery C Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion as a corporal during World War II. Following his honorable discharge on August 17, 1945, Earl returned home where he worked for the former Eagle Roller Mill. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Hamann June 18, 1946 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. They made their home in New Ulm where Earl spent most of his working life working for various area grain elevator operations. The couple moved to Evan in May, 1996. His wife died March 24, 2003. Earl was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Survivors include daughters, Rebecca Netzke and her husband Ronald of Evan, Rhonda Dahlgren and her husband Joel of New Ulm; son, Jeffrey Schroeder of Evan; seven grandchildren, Brian Netzke and his wife Ronda of Searles, Todd Netzke and his wife Kara of Red Wing, Jason Netzke and his wife Amy of Sleepy Eye, Steven Netzke and his wife Kari of Avon, Randy Netzke of Mankato, Andrew Kitzberger of New Ulm, Daniel Kitzberger of Duluth; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Dennis Schroeder and his wife Grace of Champaign, IL; two cousins, Jerome Harmening and his wife Bernice, Lucille Mack and her husband Vernon, of New Ulm; brother-in-law, Delton Hamann and his wife Rosie of Lafayette; sisters-in-law, Shirley Forst and her husband Gerald of Gibbon, Betty Jarvis and her husband Gerald of Rochester; nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Earl was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Paul Kitzberger and an infant sister.

Grace Vorwerk, infant daughter of Christopher and Jennifer (Ries) Vorwerk, was stillborn Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Grace will be buried with her grandpa Ron Ries, in a private family service at St. George Catholic Cemetery.
Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
In addition to her parents, baby Grace is survived by her siblings, Alex and Allyson Vorwerk at home; grandparents, Bruce and Vicki Vorwerk, and Barb Ries, all of New Ulm; great-grandparents, Wilmar and Eunice Vorwerk of New Ulm, and Renee Annexstad of Mercedes, TX; uncles, Andrew Vorwerk and his wife Konnie of Sartell, Jeremy Vorwerk and his wife Ruth of Sauk Rapids, Nathan Vorwerk of Lafayette, Jason Ries and his wife Cindy of New Ulm; aunt, Jackie Forst and her husband Glen of Gibbon.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Ron Ries in 2003.

Elenora Huhn, 87, formerly of St. George, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 at the Gaylord Lakeview Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at St. George Catholic Church in St. George with burial in the St. George Catholic Cemetery in St. George.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and will continue on Thursday from 7:30 until 9 a.m. at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by a sister, Marcella Sellner of Newport; a brother, Albert Huhn of rural Gibbon; and by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gertrude Huhn; a sister, Veronica Huhn on Jan. 23, 2004; and a brother, John Huhn on Oct. 15, 1999.
Elenora Dorothy Huhn, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Voltin) Huhn, was born on July 16, 1917, on the farm in West Newton Township, Nicollet County. She attended country school in West Newton Township. Elenora lived and worked her entire life on the family farm up until November of 2003 when she became a resident of the nursing home. She was a member of the St. George Catholic Church.

Gloria Lieder, 67, of 2201 N. Broadway, No. 162, New Ulm, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, No. 5 at the United Church of Christ in New Ulm with Rev. Henry Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Gloria Marjorie Kretsch, the daughter of Herman and Luella (Windland) Kretsch, was born March 5, 1937, in New Ulm where she attended Catholic schools. She was united in marriage to Harry Lieder June 5, 1953, in New Ulm. The couple farmed near New Ulm and
later moved to Glencoe where Gloria worked for Telex and Green Giant. They returned to New Ulm in 1977. Harry died Sept. 8, 2004. Gloria was a member of the United Church of Christ. She enjoyed her family, crafting and crocheting.
Survivors include her sons, Gene Lieder of New Ulm, Gary Lieder and his wife Peggy of Chandler, AZ, Glen Lieder of Isle, Dennis Lieder and his wife Alice of New Ulm, Dale Lieder and his wife Shelly of Hutchinson; daughter, Cindy Weber of New Ulm; 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Emily Bergmeier of Conway, AR, Esther Ericson of Hastings; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Mickelson of Minnetonka, Elizabeth Kretsch, Elaine Lieder, Lena Scharbach and Lila Scharbach, all of New Ulm; brothers-in-law, Harlan Lieder and his wife Amy of Hutchinson, Elmer Pitzner of Gaylord; best friends, Wanda and Gene Litzau of Glencoe; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Wanda Lieder; sisters, Loretta Weber, Dolores Grothem, Grace Pitzner, Mildred Scherer; brother, Herman Kretsch; stepbrothers, Jerome Scharbach and August Scharbach.

Elenor A. Lietz, 86, formerly of Brownton, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 at Glencoe Long Term Health Care in Glencoe.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brownton with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 - 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brownton.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Elenor is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Gerald Close of Glencoe, Jane and Norman Wolfe of Irvine, California; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Donna Lietz of Oak Park, Illinois, Roger and Mary Lietz of Arlington, John and Sandi Lietz of Hutchinson, and Joel Lietz of Bloomington; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Elsa Podratz of rural Gibbon; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Sievert of Gibbon, Viola Hodel of Albany, Valaria Lietz of Seattle, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Lietz on Oct. 22, 1986; a son Randy Lietz; a daughter, Julie Riegert; sisters, Selma Sievert, Anna Gatzke, Edna Buegel, Martha Hedine; and brothers, Paul Sievert and Marvin Sievert.
Elenor Agnes Sievert was born on Jan. 1, 1918, in Moltke Township, Sibley County to Carl and Martha (Bentz) Sievert. On Jan. 1, 1939 she married John Lietz at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Moltke Township. After marriage they farmed in rural Gibbon and later settled on a farm near Brownton. In 1997 she moved into Brownton. Elenor enjoyed gardening, playing cards, teaching sunday school and belonging to the Home Extension Club. She also volunteered secretarial services for A.A.L. She was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brownton and had been a member of the Ladies Aid at church.

Elsie M. Buehler, 99, of Morton, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls.
Service is 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Morton, with burial in the city cemetery.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m., Friday, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls; and continues one hour before the service Saturday at the church.
She is survived by children, Elois Barnes of West St. Paul; Joyce Neuenburg of West St. Paul, Delbert Buehler of Morton, Melvin Buehler of Morton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sister, Margaret Frank of Olivia;
She was born Aug. 29, 1905, in Hutchinson, to William and Edith (Hillerns) Weseloh.

Zandra Dallman, 62, of Redwood Falls, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Seasons Hospice Home in Redwood Falls.
Service is 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 5, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls, with burial in the city cemetery.
Visitation is 2-3 p.m., at the church.
Arrangements are handled by Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls.
She is survived by mother, Elaine of Minneapolis; children, Michael Dallman of Spice, Cheryl Hayes of Lewiston, Idaho; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Lynn Z. Marie of Hopkins.
She was born June 16, 1942, in Los Angeles, Calif.

Bernard 'Bernie' Schleif, 93, of 300 North Broadway in New Ulm, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 5, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Father John A. Richter will celebrate the mass.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Erma Schleif of New Ulm; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dan Munce of New Ulm; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Kathleen Schleif of Owatonna; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Norma Kewley; and by brothers, Leo Schleif and Arthur Schleif.
Bernard Otto Schleif was born Oct. 17, 1911, in New Ulm to Arthur and Margaret (Zupfer) Schleif. He married Erma Altmann on Nov. 23, 1936, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. After marriage they lived in New Ulm where Bernie owned and operated Schleif's Jewelry. He later sold his business and then worked for Beck's Jewelry in New Ulm.
Bernie was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm and a past member of the Izaak Walton League.
In lieu of flowers, the Schleif family prefers memorials to the Oak Hills Living Center and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

Mae Jeanette (Valentien) Uhrhammer, 73, of Comfrey, died on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at Springfield Medical Center in Springfield.
Service is 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, at New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey, with burial in the Springfield City Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Friday, and 7:30-8 a.m., Saturday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Comfrey.
She is survived by her husband, Marlin of Comfrey; children, Gary of Butterfield, Daryl of Shakopee, Joel of Comfrey, and Kevin of Comfrey; four grandchildren; and sister Mildred Vanen Hoek of Garvin.
Mae Jeanette Uhrhammer was born December 3, 1930 in Selma Township, Cottonwood County, the daughter of Albert and Lula (Evers) Valentien.

Harold Messner, 80 of Gaylord, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at his home in Gaylord.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Winthrop, with burial in the Winthrop Cemetery.
Visitation will be 3 ­ 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Apostolic Christian Fellowship Center and 9 ­ 9:45 a.m. on Monday at the Apostolic Christian Church.
Harold Levi Messner was born on December 14, 1923, in Alfsborg Township, Nicollet County, to Levi and Mae (Miller) Messner. Harold joined the U.S. Navy as a Navy Sea Bee, on Jan. 31, 1945 in Minneapolis. He served his country during World War II. Harold achieved the rank of seaman 2nd class in the Navy. He was honorably discharged on April 11, 1946.
Harold is survived by his wife, Geraldine Messner of Gaylord; Patricia Jerabek of Hutchinson, Bruce Messner of West Bend, Iowa, Jennifer Marohn of Oakdale, Douglas Messner of Eagan, and Vernon Messner of Mankato; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel Schmidt of Lafayette, Idabell Witt of Gibbon, Shirley Demm of Winthrop; brothers, Mike Messner of Gaylord, Don Messner of Peoria, Ill., Melvin Messner of Winthro, Harvey Messner of Baxter, Marvin Messner of Winthrop, and Gerald Messner of Hutchinson. Arrangements by the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop.
