Harland Lauwagie, 91, of rural Lafayette, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 20, 2004, at 11 A.M., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Winthrop. Interment will be in the Winthrop Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 4 - 8 P.M., and Saturday from 7:30 ­ 8:30 A.M., at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop.
There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:30 P.M. and a Parish Prayer service at 7:30 P.M., both on Friday night at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Harland Joseph Lauwagie was born February 25, 1913, in Sheffield, IL. He was the son of Frank and Octave (Schoutteet) Lauwagie.
Harland married Florence Johnson on April 17, 1945, in Lafayette. The couple made their home and farmed in the Winthrop area until Harland retired in 1977. In 1982, they moved to rural Lafayette. Harland continued to help his son on the farm until 1997.
Harland was a 70 plus year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also active with various farm organizations.
Harland thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, along with gardening and designing and making things in his work shop.
Harland was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harry Lauwagie; sister, Alice Stippel and grandson, Joshua Lauwagie.
Harland is survived by his wife, Florence Lauwagie of rural Lafayette; children, Karen (Wally) Sagmoen of Courtland, Steven (Roxie) Lauwagie of Apple Valley, Gary (Sharon) Lauwagie of Chaska and Kevin (Sue) Lauwagie of Winthrop; 11 grandchildren, Jason, Chad, Ryan, Jennifer, and Daniel Brown; Michael, Scott, Beth, Kayle and Emilee Lauwagie; Michelle Stadler; 4 great-grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 8 step great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Schwab of New Ulm, Aggie Schiltz of New Ulm, Mary Ryan of Minneapolis; brother, Stanley Lauwagie of Gibbon; sister-in-law, Shirley Lauwagie of Gibbon; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Raja Mansoor, 73, of Denver, Colo., formerly of New Ulm, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, in Denver.
He was born in Jerusalem, Palestine on Dec. 25, 1931, and moved with his family to New Ulm in 1940. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1950.
He is the son of Audi and Najla Mansoor. He is survived by a son and two grandchildren in Denver; brother, Khalil (Monte), in Sacramento, Calif., and sister, Helen, in Del Ray Beach, Fla.

Warren 'Boobie' Pizel, 61, of Hanska, died Thursday, November 18, 2004 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato with his family at his side.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 20 at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Vedell officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Schmucker Funeral Service of Hanska is handling the arrangements.
Warren David Pizel, the son of Donald and Stella (Joramo) Pizel, was born September 14, 1943 in Linden Township, Brown County. Shortly after graduating from Hanska High School in 1961, Warren entered the United States Navy. He served on the USS Enterprise during the Cuban Missile Crisis and served in Vietnam. Warren married Deanne Lilleodden December 14, 1963 at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church. Following his honorable discharge September 10, 1966, he returned to Hanska where he worked for thirty years as the Fertilizer Dept. Manager of the Hanska Farmers Co-op. In his work, Warren helped many young farmers get their start. Illness forced his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Lake Hanska Lutheran Church and a former member of the church council; VFW and American Legion; former member of the Hanska City Council; and a retired twenty-year member of the Hanska Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Deanne of Hanska; daughter, Cheryl Kraus and her fiancé Tim Doe of Hanska; son, Curt Pizel and his wife Chris of Brandon, MN; five grandchildren, Asha, Justin and Josh Kraus, Dustin and Chelsey Pizel; mother, Stella Pizel of Madelia; brothers, Ronald Pizel and his wife Sharon of New Ulm, Kenneth Pizel and his wife Darlene of Owatonna; sisters, Annette Larson and her husband Wally of Hanska, Carolyn Lastine and her husband Tom of Hanska; sister-in-law, Marilyn Hanson of Hanska; brother-in-law, Orvis Lilleodden and his wife Bernice of Menagha; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father; daughter-in-law, DeeAnn (Asleson) Pizel; two brothers, Douglas and Charles Pizel; nephew and godchild, Chet Larson; and nephew, Mark Pizel.

Marcella 'Sally' Zwach, 82, of 427 N. Jefferson in New Ulm, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 22, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Father John A. Richter celebrating.
Burial will be in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The Christian Mothers Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Cathedral. There will be a parish prayer service at 5:15 p.m. and the St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Council will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Marlene M. Piere. Marlene M. (Ganske) Piere of rural Winthrop passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004 at the Gaylord Lakview Home in Gaylord after a battle with cancer.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, November 22, 2004 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. The Reverend Alfred J. Luehmann will officiate. Casket bearers will be Michael Piere, Chris Piere, Tyler Piere, James Piere, Bill Piere, and John Piere.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Monday.
Marlene Mae Ganske was born June 30, 1937 at the Union Hospital, New Ulm, to Herbert and Sophie (Goblirsch) Ganske. She was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran in New Ulm. In the spring of 1938 the family moved to rural Comfrey and in 1950 to rural Hewitt, Minn. Marlene attended public schools in Comfrey and Hewitt. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity
Lutheran in Hewitt. Marlene met David Piere at a dance at the Clarissa Ballroom in 1953 and was united in marriage September 27, 1954 at Trinity Lutheran, Hewitt. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Marlene and Dave made their home in St. Paul until returning to the Hewitt/Verndale area in 1955. They farmed in Bartlett Township, Todd County for 42 years and in 1997 moved to rural Winthrop.
Marlene is survived by husband David; sons and daughter-in-laws; David and Doreley of Carlos, Dan and Patricia of Wadena, Joe and Marge of Andover, and Duane and Vickie, Winthrop; sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Harold Roth, New Ulm; sister-in-law, Maybelle Ganske, Bertha; brothers-in-law, Lawrence Piere, Verndale, and Raymond Lubke, Billings, Mont; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings; Floyd Ganske, Wallace Ganske, and Bernice Truax; grandson Travis Piere.
Marlene worked for H.W. Carter, Staples, where she also served as a union steward. Holmcrest Furniture, Wadena, Jolly Tundra and Richcraft, Winthrop. She was a member at Immanuel Lutheran, Gaylord. Marlene enjoyed her family, traveling with her sisters, old tyme music and good conversation over a cup of coffee. She is also survived by special feline friend Toby.

Eleanor Sophia (Lang) Turbes, 93, of Springfield, MN died on Friday, November 19, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield, MN.
Visitation will be on Sunday, November 21, 2004 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Monday November 22, 2004 from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield, MN. There will be a Parish Prayer Service on Sunday at 5:30 PM at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield, MN. Service will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield on Monday, November 22, 2004 at 10:30 AM. The Clergy will be Father Dennis Labat. Interment will be at the St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery in Springfield.
Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.

Eleanor Sophia Turbes was born on October 14, 1911 in Burnstown Township to Michael and Elizabeth (Sturm) Lang. On October 26, 1932 she married Mathew L. Turbes in Springfield. Eleanor was a long time resident of the Springfield area. The couple farmed in Stately Township for 40 years and moved into Springfield in 1973. In 1994 they moved to the Lake Villa Maria Apartments in Sleepy Eye and later to the Countryside Retirement in Sleepy Eye and in April of 2003 they moved to the Gil-Mor Manor inMorgan. In May of 2004 Eleanor became a resident at the St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Eleanor was a member of the St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, a member of St. Ann's CCW, St. Monica's Court, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She also was a past member of the Springfield Senior Citizens, East Stately Extension Club, and the Birthday Clubs. Eleanor enjoyed working with flowers, gardening and playing cards. Most of all, she enjoyed time with her family of which they hold manyfond memories.
Eleanor died on Friday, November 19, 2004 at the St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 93 years.
She will be remembered by her son - Glen and wife Kathy Turbes of Willmar; grandchildren - Cheryl and husband Fritz Bredenbeck of Edina, Brian and Kathy Rosenhammer of California, and Deb Jensen and friend John Bassett of Elk River; a son-in-law - Leander Rosenhammer of Mankato; a sister-in-law - Gladys Lang of Springfield and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Mathew in February of 2004; daughter - Angela Rosenhammer in May of 2004; and brothers - Hugo andEugene.

Marcella is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Gene Friederich of LeMars, Iowa; a son, Roger Zwach of New Ulm; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; a brother and sisters-in-law, Jerome and Joan Schimschock of Milford Township, Marie Schimschock of New Ulm, and Phyllis Schimschock of Chaska; and by a brother-in-law, Patrick Zwach of California. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerome Zwach on November 17, 1994; granddaughter, Jennifer Friederich; a sister, Alice Domeier; and by brothers, Melvin, Jim, Ray and Eugene Schimschock.
Marcella Schimschock was born in November 22, 1921 at Milford Township, Brown County to John and Mary (Wiess) Schimschock. On February 24, 1941, she married Jerome Zwach at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, they farmed the New Ulm area for several years until moving to New Ulm in 1946. They owned and operated Zwach Welding in New Ulm until selling it to their son in 1989.
Marcella enjoyed playing bingo, collecting beanie babies, and embroidering. Grandmas and cookies are synonymous!
Marcella was a volunteer at the New Ulm Medical Center gift shop, a member of the Christian Mother's Society, the St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Council, and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

Leander Frank, 92 of Franklin, formerly of Fairfax, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at the Franklin Health Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax. There will be a Parish Prayer service at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Monday.
Leander William Frank was born May 2, 1912, in Fairfax to Edward and Emma (Kachelmeier) Frank, Sr.
Leander is survived by his brother, Eddie Frank Jr. of Fairfax and sister, Helen Westensee of Minneapolis.

Ernest F. Scharpe, 83, of Arlington died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004 at the Glencoe Regional health Services.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Green Isle. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Green Isle.
Visitation will be on Monday, from 4-8 p.m. at St. Paul's and continue one hour prior to the service at church. Kolden Funeral Home of Arlington is handling the arrangements.
He was born on Jan. 23, 1921 to Gust and Minnie (Alsleben) Scharpe in New Auburn Twp., Sibley County.
He Is survived by children, Jerry Scharpe of Glencoe; Kenneth Scharpe of Winthrop; Cora Janke of Brownton; Mary Luepke of Arlington; Robert Scharpe of Hutchinson; Roxanne Leistiko of Waconia; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; brothers, Herbert Scharpe of Glencoe; Clarence Scharpe of Arlington and Willard Scharpe of Glencoe; a sister, Meta Frauendienst of Gaylord.

Jeanette Wolf Funeral services for Jeanette Wolf, 94, rural Truman, Minn., will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Fairmont.
Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Wells, Minn. Mrs. Wolf died Saturday morning, Nov. 20, 2004, at the Fairmont Medical Center-Mayo Health System.
Visitation will be on Monday evening from 4-7 p.m. at Olson-Zaharia Funeral Home in FAIRMONT and one hour prior to the services at the church.
Jeanette Harriet Kaiser was born on Sept. 16, 1910, in Wells, Minn., to Theodore and Martha (Miller) Kaiser. She attended Wells Public School and Mankato State University. Teaching school was her life work. She married Herbert J. Wolf on Aug. 25, 1936, in Wells, Minn. They both taught school all their lives until retiring. Jeanette worked with the primary children at Grace Lutheran Church for many years. All her life, teaching was her chosen profession. She enjoyed the outdoors and nature, especially while living on the farm. Reading, writing and art work were her fields of pleasure. Jeanette said, "God has blessed Herb and I for our long lives and the work that we both loved." She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont.
Jeanette is survived by one daughter, Jean Eicker of Nampa, ID; one grandson, Asa Cronk of Appleton, WI; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Herb.
In lieu of flowers, Jeanette preferred memorials be given to Grace Lutheran Church, Fairmont.

Gordon 'Gordie' Berndt, 75, of rural Courtland died Saturday, November 20, 2004, at his home
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 24, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Courtland Township, Nicollet County with burial in the church cemetery. Full Military Honors will be conducted at the Cemetery by the American Legion Post 510 of Nicollet.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday.
Gordie is survived by his wife, Alice Berndt of rural Courtland; daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Charles Klossner of North Mankato; sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Kathy Berndt of North Mankato, Dave and Lisa Berndt of New Ulm, Keith and Heather Berndt of Shakopee; grandchildren, Nathan Klossner, Brandon Klossner, Daniel Berndt, Sarah Berndt, Ryan Berndt, Dalton Berndt, Paige Berndt; sisters-in-law, Lorene Berndt of Mapleton, Viola Berndt of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Bonnie Berndt of Glenville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roland and LaVon Bode of Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother, George Berndt; sister, Ida Eckhardt; and brothers, Ervin Berndt and Arnold Berndt.
Gordon Rudolph Berndt was born on April 10, 1929 in Emerald Township, Blue Earth County, to Albert and Maria (Mielke) Berndt. On March 9, 1951 he joined the U.S. Army and served as a Private First Class in the Third Infantry Division during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 9, 1954. He received various medals of honor. On October 4, 1958, he married Alice Bode at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland. After marriage they farmed in Emerald Township, Blue Earth County, until 1962 when they moved to a farm in Courtland Township, Nicollet County. Due to health problems he retired from farming in 1988 but they continued to live on the farm. Gordie enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland and had served as a trustee at church and a Cemetery board member. He was a member of the American Legion Post 510 of Nicollet, the V.F.W. of St. Peter, and the D.A.V. of Mankato.

Russell Howk, 78, of New Ulm, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 at his home.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 26, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Scott Jakel and Jerry Haggerman officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations will follow in the Soldiers Rest section of the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday.
Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Russell Lee Howk, the son of Ray and Elsie (Clopton) Howk was born Feb. 27, 1926, in Brownton, Minn. After graduating from Winthrop High School in 1944, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving as a Radarman on the USS Boxer and USS Fog. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he attended Minot State Teachers College. Russell was united in marriage to Evelyn Schrieber on July 13, 1947 in Winthrop. The family made their home in St. Clair, Mankato and Zumbrota before moving to New Ulm in 1957. Russell was employed as a Master Electrician at Kraft Foods for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, woodworking, gardening and reading his Bible. Russell was a member of River Valley Christian Church and served as a member of the church board, a Sunday School teacher, Treasurer and helped with church maintenance.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn; children, Loren Howk and his wife Florence and Kevin Howk and his wife Gwen, all of Fairmont, Rick Howk and his wife Bonnie, Rodney Howk and his wife Donna, Renola Dauer and her husband Joe, Robin Howk and his special friend Karen Goodall, Jeffrey Howk and his wife Kathy, Barbara Schreiner and her husband Jim, all of New Ulm, Leah Howk and her fiance; Craig Tutewohl of Apple Valley; 37 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Roy Howk of Glencoe; sister, Carol Pollack and her husband Dennis of Albuquerque, NM; brother-in-law, Rueben Gasow of Glencoe; sisters-in-law, Rose Alice Howk of Glencoe and Dorothy Gasow of Glencoe; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant grandson; sister, Roberta Howk, two infant siblings; mother-in-law, Johanna Schrieber; and father-in-law, William Schrieber.
