Carl Elmer Kemi
Carl Elmer Kemi, who along with his wife built a home in Saginaw on Little Grand Lake in 1958, died Mon., Jan. 17, 2005 in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was 90.

He was born in Cloquet and married Signe Rahja. Carl was employed from 1936 until his retirement in 1977 by Potlatch Corporation. Before his retirement, he bought his home on Erickson Road in Esko and lived there until the summer of 2004. He married Gladys Carlson in 1979 and together they delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years and they enjoyed traveling and bowling. Carl was a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club and a life-time member of Finlandia Beach Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents August and Hilja Kemi, his first wife Signe in 1977, his wife Gladys in 1993, his son Walter Carl Kemi in 1962, brothers Leo, Roy, Donald and Eugene Kemi and sisters Miriam Maki, Evy Shepeck and Esther Johnson.

Carl is survived by his daughter Carol (Jerry) Hicks of White Bear Township, granddaughters Amy Hicks and her fiancé Armando Marquez of Eagan and Angela (Kevin) Stafsholt of Cedar Falls, Iowa, a great-grandson Landon Carl Stafsholt, brothers Ray (Hazel) Kemi of Esko and George Kemi of Cloquet, a sister Lorraine (James) Meyer of Glencoe, Minn. and special sons David (Mary) Carlson and Gordy (Helen) Carlson, both of Duluth.

Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet.

Joseph D. Olson
Services were held last week for Joseph D. Olson of Proctor. He passed away Wed., Jan. 19, 2005, at his home surrounded by family. He was 78.

He was born in Northfield, Minn., on Sept. 23, 1926 to Joseph E. and Dusyna (Hanson) Olson. Joseph served in the US Army as an engineer and was a veteran of World War II in the Asia and Pacific Theatre. He was united in marriage to Dolores Gerds in 1963. Joseph was a lifetime member of the VFW Post in Deming, New Mexico and a member of the American Legion Post 74 in West Duluth.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years Dolores, daughters Judy (John), Darla and Tamara (Richard), sons Paul, Timothy (Anna) and Shawn (Kathy), several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers Vern, Lyle and Don and his sister Lynda.

Military rites accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Jonas Arthur Heikkila
Liz (John) Palokangas of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Jonas Arthur Heikkila. The Wright resident died Thurs., Jan. 20, 2005, in his home at the age of 81.

He was born in Cromwell and married Beatrice Haro on Aug. 6, 1949 in Cloquet. Jonas served in the Army Infantry during World War II and was awarded the purple heart, the bronze star and received a general’s medallion. Jonas logged, and owned and operated his own sawmill. He was a member of the Eagle Lake Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church in Cromwell and the Carlton VFW. Jonas enjoyed hunting, fishing and four-wheeling.

Jonas was preceded in death by an infant son, grandson, his parents, his parents-in-law, two brothers, two sisters and an infant twin brother Charles.

He is also survived by his wife Beatrice of Wright, seven other children, 18 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters, two in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters in faith.

Burial will be at Eagle Lake Cemetery in the spring.

Sister Ann Edward Scanlon
Sister Ann Edward Scanlon, OSB, who was born in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School and went on to be the fifth president of the College of St. Scholastica, died Thurs., Jan. 27, 2005, in Benet Hall at St. Scholastica Monastery. She was 95.

She entered the Duluth Benedictine Community in 1933 and professed monastic vows in 1934. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the College of St. Scholastica. She attained a master’s and a doctorate in history from the University of Chicago. She audited classes at Catholic University and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She attended professional seminars for college and university administrators at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. Eight months of European travel enabled her the opportunity to attend a summer session at the University of Dublin. Sister Ann Edward taught at Villa Sancta Scholastica High School and spent three years at Duluth Cathedral High School teaching social studies, speech and journalism. In 1938, she began her long career at the College of St. Scholastica where she served as professor of history, department chairperson, floor prefect, member of the personnel office staff, Dean of Women, Academic Dean, alumni director, foreign student advisor and President of the College of St. Scholastica from 1960-1967. In 1975, Sister Ann Edward retired from classroom duties and devoted herself to working with alumni and foreign students until full retirement in 1994. Sister Ann Edward held many positions in numerous organizations. Among them were St. Scholastica Monastery Council, College of St. Scholastica’s Bicentennial Committee, the Board of Trustees for Northwood Children’s Home, including one term as president, the Duluth YWCA Board, the Benedictine Foundation Board, the Duluth United Way and the Polinsky Rehabilitation Board. Governor Karl Rolvaag appointed Sister Ann Edward to the Commission on the Status of Women and U.S. Secretary of Labor Willard Wirtz named her honorary recruitment chairperson of the Youth Opportunity Program. She held membership in the Organization of American Historians, Kappa Gamma Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma and served as First Vice President, Mississippi Valley Historical Society, St. Louis County Historical Society, and the Association of Minnesota Colleges, in which she served a term as president. In 1975, Sister Ann Edward was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the College of St. Scholastica and was granted emerita status. In that same year, the College established the Sister Ann Edward Scanlon Award to be granted annually to an alumnus/alumna who manifested outstanding dedication to his/her civic community as well as to the College of St. Scholastica. In 1983, the University of Chicago cited her as one of its graduates who had made a significant contribution to higher education.

Sister Ann Edward was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Ann (Reidy) Scanlon, a brother Edward and sisters Kathryn Scanlon Leonard and Clarice Scanlon Marshall.

In addition to the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, she is survived by her sister Margaret Pavlatos of Duluth and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Father William Graham presided at the service. Burial is at Gethsemane Cemetery.

Arthur Fredrickson
Arthur Fredrickson, who graduated from Proctor High School and was a former employee of the DM&IR Railroad, died Mon., Jan. 10, 2005, in Farmington, Mich. He was 74.

He was born March 20, 1930 to Robert and Hulda Fredrickson. After graduation from Proctor High School, he attended the Duluth Business University. He also worked for Cooney Engineering in Detroit. Art belonged to the Detroit Curling Club and Farmington Elks Club. He was a Proctor Journal subscriber since 1966.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Marlen (Hickey).

Survivors include his daughters Jill Fredrickson and Karen (Scott) Terzick and grandsons Zachery and Samuel, all of Mich., his sister Eleanor Soderberg and Bill Burros, both of Duluth.

Burial was in Farmington.

Chester M. Baker
Chester M. Baker, who was born in Proctor, passed away Mon., Jan. 24, 2005 in his Duluth home. He attended schools in the Duluth area. He was 80.

Chester worked at the Coolerator Plant and retired from Superwood in 1988. He was a Veteran of World War II. Chester married Ramona (Dather) in 1969.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife Ramona, daughters Heather (Mike) Ostrowski and Heidi Baker, foster daughters Mary Erickson and Kathy Murphy, two grandsons, his sister Mae of Calif. and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held last week.

Ida E. Schmidt
Ida E. Schmidt, who was born in Proctor to John and Ingeborg (Ritaas) Granmoe of Duluth died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 89.

The Duluth resident married Louis T. Schmidt on Feb. 14, 1947.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Louis T. their only son, William Schmidt in 1968; parents; and siblings, Arne, Walter, Ole, Carrie, Elsie and Mildred.

Ida is survived by her daughters, Carol (Dick) Mategko of Duluth and Bonnie Kennedy of St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandchildren, Cindy McTavish, Don (Lisa) Kozlovski, Lisa (Greg) Gorham and Gary Vasil, all of Duluth; and great-grandchildren, Dan and Nick McTavish and Christina and Michael Kozlovski, all of Duluth

Services were held yesterday. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Lydia M. Simney
JoAnn (Mark) Reinke of Midway Township is mourning the death of her mother, Lydia M. Simney of Edgewood Vista, Hermantown. She died unexpectedly from complications from the flu, on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 89.

She was born in Duluth and attended St. Rose School in Proctor and married Darwin (Bud) Simney in 1945. She enjoyed going for pontoon rides on Fish Lake, where she had a home for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Claire and Stephanie ‘Sally’ Mulvahill; a brother, Louis Sklors.

She is also survived by two daughters, Mary Ann (Dan) Marks of Duluth; grandchildren, Todd (Carol) Reinke of Chisholm, Tanya (Jason) Wick of Hermantown, Mike Curtis of Duluth, Angela (Trent) Edgerton of Duluth; step-grandchildren, Rhonda Maybry and Dan Marks Jr.; great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Harrison, Ava, and Annika; several nieces and nephews.

Burial is at Oneota Cemetery.

Hazel Jean Ophus
Services were held for Hazel Jean Ophus, 78, a lifelong Duluth resident who died Sun., Feb. 20, 2005 in her home.

She was born in Duluth on March 12, 1926 to Harold and Tilla (Ellefson) Ophus. She attended Proctor High School. Hazel worked at the Kleerflax Rug Factory in Duluth for fifteen years before going to work for the DM & IR Railroad. She worked as a switchboard operator and in other departments at the railroad until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of the railroad clerks union and a lifelong member of the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle. Hazel enjoyed quilting at the church.

Hazel is survived by her brother, Vern (Judy) Ophus of Proctor; two nieces, Stephanie (Jim) Hebb of Saginaw and Kris (Mike) Weiler of Duluth; and her good friend, David Gilberg of Blackhoof Valley.

Burial was be in Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown.

Rose Bijold
Services were held early in the week for Rose Bijold of Proctor. She died Fri., Mar. 4, 2005 at Lakeshore Lutheran Home. She was 79.

She was born in Hibbing, Minn. to Arthur and Marie Lantman. Rose was a graduate of Hibbing High School. On Oct. 29, 1949 she married Clifford James Bijold. Rose was a homemaker and member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clifford in 1977 and son Richard in 1989, brothers Charlie and Florent Lantman and a sister Leona McDonald.

She is survived by her children Cheryl (Tim Rainaldo) Bijold and Jeff Timm-Bijold, both of Duluth, Cindy Bijold of Savage, Jean (Donald) Dotterwick of Superior, seven grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, and her sisters Fran Bonacci, Hibbing and Anne (Bill) Lopac, Mountain Iron.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.
